Iran denies any planned US talks in Pakistan, while Donald Trump says Iran may make an offer, highlighting uncertainty in ongoing diplomatic efforts

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said in a post on X that no meeting is planned between Iranian and US negotiators in Pakistan, adding fresh uncertainty to ongoing diplomatic signals. “No meeting is planned to take place between Iran and the US,” Baghaei wrote. “Iran’s observations would be conveyed to Pakistan.” He added that Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is currently in Pakistan for discussions with Pakistani officials focused on mediation efforts to end what he described as the “American imposed war of aggression” and to restore regional peace. Baghaei’s remarks come amid mixed signals surrounding potential peace talks. The White House earlier said that US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff would travel to Pakistan for direct discussions with Iranian representatives. Speaking to news outlet PBS News, Trump expressed frustration over the scheduling of the talks, asserting that Iran was "supposed to be there" following a prior agreement. In characteristically blunt terms, he signaled that his patience with the temporary truce has reached its limit. "If the ceasefire ends without a peace deal, then lots of bombs start going off," Trump warned, adding in a separate interview that it was "highly unlikely" he would grant a further extension. While the technical expiration of the truce is slated for Tuesday night in Tehran, the White House has indicated it views the deadline as Wednesday evening in Washington.

'We have no plans': Iran casts doubt on second round of peace talks with US in Pakistan

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf said that US President Donald Trump is attempting to reshape negotiations into coercion, warning that Tehran rejects talks conducted under pressure. President Donald Trump “seeks to turn this negotiating table— in his own imagination— into a table of surrender or to justify renewed warmongering,” Ghalibaf said in a post on X on Monday (April 20). “We do not accept negotiations under the shadow of threats, and in the past two weeks, we have prepared to reveal new cards on the battlefield,” the post added. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the country “is taking all aspects into consideration” and will decide its next steps while continuing consultations. The ministry also thanked Pakistan for its “good offices and mediation” but accused the United States of undermining diplomacy through “provocative actions” and alleged ceasefire violations, including threats against Iranian commercial vessels. Also Read: Lori Chavez-DeRemer resigns from Trump's cabinet as labour secretary amid misconduct allegations

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that diplomatic channels remain open despite uncertainty over the next round of talks between Washington and Tehran.
