As the race to the White House continues to heat up, presumptive presidential candidates Donald Trump and Joe Biden both hold a mostly negative view among voters, shows a new poll.

The poll conducted by SSRS for CNN found that while 58 per cent of voters have an unfavourable view of Biden, 55 per cent felt negatively about Trump. However, 53 per cent also said they were dissatisfied with the candidates they had to choose from in this year's presidential contest.

Arizona at the epicenter of US Abortion debate. Can Joe Biden win a re-election bid on abortion rights alone? After Arizona's highest court revived a 160 year old abortion ban the move has thrust abortion back to the forefront of the presidential campaign between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. US Elections: Abortion a crucial poll issue in Arizona

US President Joe Biden's re-election campaign has blamed Republican rival Donald Trump for Arizona's revival of the 160-year-old near-complete abortion ban.

In a statement on Tuesday (Apr 9), Biden's running mate Vice President Kamala Harris said: "Arizona just rolled back the clock to a time before women could vote–and, by his own admission, there’s one person responsible: Donald Trump."

'Proudly' responsible

On Tuesday, Arizona's Supreme Court revived a law dating back to 1864 that bans abortion in virtually all instances. This damning ban came just a day after Trump in a video proclaimed that he was "proudly the person responsible" for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that enshrined abortion rights in the US for nearly five decades.

US: Donald Trump says states should decide abortion rights

Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump once again kicked up his degrading rhetoric against migrants, calling them "animals", "not humans" and "mental patients" during campaign rallies in Michigan and Wisconsin on Tuesday (Apr 2).

Trump in Michigan listed, at times in graphic detail, several criminal cases involving suspects that have entered the US illegally.

"They're sending prisoners, murderers, drug dealers, mental patients and terrorists, the worst they have in every country all over the world. This isn't just in South America. They're coming from the Congo, from Yemen, from Somalia, from Syria. They come from all over the world. China. Many of them are military age, which is very strange."

Here’s all you need to know about Super Tuesday

When is Super Tuesday?

This year, it falls on Tuesday, March 5.

What is Super Tuesday?

Super Tuesday stands out as the day when the largest number of states conduct their presidential primaries and caucuses, serving as a crucial milestone in the electoral process. In these state-level competitions, candidates affiliated with the two major political factions, namely the Democrats and the Republicans, strive to amass the necessary delegates to secure their party's endorsements.

Delegates play a pivotal role as representatives of their respective states at the party conventions, where they cast votes for the nominee based on the outcomes of the primaries and caucuses.

In the upcoming Super Tuesday races this year, a substantial 874 Republican delegates will be in contention, constituting approximately 36 per cent of the total available. To clinch the Republican nomination, a candidate must secure a minimum of 1,215 delegates out of the overall 2,429.

On the Democratic front, Tuesday's Super Tuesday holds sway over 1,439 delegates out of the party's total count of 3,979, emphasizing the significance of these contests in shaping the path toward the Democratic nomination.

Which states in US are voting on Super Tuesday?

Super Tuesday will see voting taking place in fifteen states across the United States:

Alabama
Alaska
Arkansas
California
Colorado
Maine
Massachusetts
Minnesota
North Carolina
Oklahoma
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
Vermont
Virginia
The territory of American Samoa will also be voting.

What is the origin of the term Super Tuesday?

The origins of the term are somewhat unclear, with indications pointing back to at least 1976 when ‘Super Tuesday’ referred to the final significant primaries in June—California, New York and Ohio. However, it is widely accepted that ‘Super Tuesday’ took its modern form in 1988.

In that year, a coalition of Democrats in southern US states opted to front-load the presidential primary process following Republican President Ronald Reagan's decisive victory four years prior against Democratic candidate Walter Mondale. Their strategy involved holding simultaneous primaries early in the election cycle, aiming to exert greater influence on their party's selection and ensure the nominee's viability in the American South.

Despite the unsuccessful outcome of the 1988 initiative, Super Tuesday persists as the day when a majority of US states conduct their primary elections.

What is the significance of Super Tuesday?

The significance of Super Tuesday lies in the allocation of approximately a third of each party's delegates, crucial in determining their respective presidential nominees.

US Presidential Elections 2024: Donald Trump to face off Nikki Haley in South Carolina primary

An overwhelming majority of people in the United States think that President Joe Biden is too old to serve another term in the White House. According to a poll by ABC News and Ipsos published on Sunday (11), 86 per cent of Americans think Biden, 81, is too old to serve as president, which includes 59 per cent of people who think both he and former president Donald Trump, 77, are too old for the top job. The figure also includes 27 per cent who think that only Biden is too old to become president again.

The findings further revealed that 62 per cent of Americans think that Trump is too old to serve as president.

Both Biden (a Democrat) and Trump (a Republican) are their parties' presidential hopefuls for the upcoming election. Concerns about their age have increased in recent months.

A previous poll by the network in Sept last year showed 74 per cent thought Biden was too old to serve another term as president while 49 per cent said the same about Trump.

An overwhelming majority of people in the United States think that President Joe Biden is too old to serve another term in the White House. The report said that Biden willfully retained and disclosed classified materials after his vice presidency, which included documents about military and foreign policy in Afghanistan, issues of national security, and foreign policy implicating sensitive intelligence sources and methods.
It is possible, given Vivek Ramaswamy's ancestral origins in southern India, to imagine that he read Iowa this week as 'Ayyo'-wa! That Tamil exclamation is one of emotional distress, and that is exactly what the biotech-entrepreneur-turned presidential aspirant of the United States must have experienced when Republicans gave him no more than 8 per cent of the votes up for grabs at the party caucus in the cold agricultural midwestern state.

Not surprisingly, Vivek, whose name in Sanskrit means one endowed with discernment and wisdom, gave up his bid and simply said "Aye, Aye, sir" to Donald Trump. A crow sporting peacock feathers: Vivek Ramaswamy falls to neo-convert overkill

With the United States presidential election less than a year away, candidates have ramped up efforts to reach as many voters as possible, including Democratic Shamaine Daniels who is running for office against Trump-backed Republican Representative Scott Perry in the US state of Pennsylvania.

The Democrat lost to the Republican candidate by less than 10 points last time but has now called in ‘Ashley’ to help her with the campaign. Daniels announced her candidacy for the US House of Representatives, in addition to the Republican incumbent she is also up against six other Democratic candidates.

Meet Ashley

Ashley is an AI-powered campaign volunteer but is far from the typical robocaller since none of her responses are canned or pre-recorded, given her ability to hold conversational calls.

The creators, as per Reuters, intend to mainly work with Democratic campaigns and candidates, and say she is the first political phone banker powered by generative AI technology similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

According to Ashley’s creators at a tech startup Civox, she is capable of having an infinite number of customised one-on-one conversations at the same time.

Over the weekend, the new AI tool was deployed to have high-quality conversations on a large scale paving the way for political campaigning where candidates want to use technology to engage voters.

Ashley called thousands of Pennsylvania voters on behalf of Daniels and like a pro campaign volunteer she analysed a person’s profile to have tailored conversations around their key issues.

“This one kept my attention,” 63-year-old David Fish told Reuters. “The thing I really liked was that it identified itself as AI and didn’t try to fool me.”

Civox, cofounded by Ilya Mouzykantskii and Adam Reis said that Ashley uses a combination of more than 20 different open-source AI models and licensed technology to build Ashley. However, they declined to disclose the exact generative AI models they are using.

“This is going to scale fast,” said Mouzykantskii, the London-based CEO of Civox. “We intend to be making tens of thousands of calls a day by the end of the year and into the six digits pretty soon. This is coming for the 2024 election and it’s coming in a very big way. The future is now.”

Legal concerns

While the AI tool historic development, is it legal or even ethical? Several countries are in the midst of figuring out legislation to regulate the rapid growth of AI which has raised concerns among experts who have said that it poses an existential threat to humanity.

Earlier this year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman testified before the US Congress saying that he was worried about the generative AI’s ability to compromise election integrity through “one-on-one interactive disinformation.”

However, Mouzykantskii told Reuters that he is fully aware of the potential downsides but will not prioritise profits over ethics. To address these concerns, while Civox’s AI does record calls with the voters to further train Ashley, the data of the person is anonymised.

It also includes a measure where, if the conversation goes off-topic or becomes abusive, the AI politely ends the call.

While the US Federal Election Commission has begun looking into whether to regulate AI use in campaigns, there is very little clarity about whether what Daniels is doing is legal or not, but she does plan on using her experience with AI to find ways to regulate it.

Meet Ashley Ashley is an AI-powered campaign volunteer but is far from the typical robocaller since none of her responses are canned or pre-recorded, given her ability to hold conversational calls. The creators, as per Reuters, intend to mainly work with Democratic campaigns and candidates, and say she is the first political phone banker powered by generative AI technology similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. ALSO READ | AI replaces human workers: Indian CEO replaces 90% support staff with chatbot, internet outraged According to Ashley’s creators at a tech startup Civox, she is capable of having an infinite number of customised one-on-one conversations at the same time. “The thing I really liked was that it identified itself as AI and didn’t try to fool me.” Civox, cofounded by Ilya Mouzykantskii and Adam Reis said that Ashley uses a combination of more than 20 different open-source AI models and licensed technology to build Ashley. However, they declined to disclose the exact generative AI models they are using. ALSO READ | Meta flouted copyrights to train its AI 'Llama' despite warning from lawyers, claims lawsuit by authors “This is going to scale fast,” said Mouzykantskii, the London-based CEO of Civox. “We intend to be making tens of thousands of calls a day by the end of the year and into the six digits pretty soon. This is coming for the 2024 election and it’s coming in a very big way. The future is now.” Legal concerns While the AI tool historic development, is it legal or even ethical? Several countries are in the midst of figuring out legislation to regulate the rapid growth of AI which has raised concerns among experts who have said that it poses an existential threat to humanity. Earlier this year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman testified before the US Congress saying that he was worried about the generative AI’s ability to compromise election integrity through “one-on-one interactive disinformation.” However, Mouzykantskii told Reuters that he is fully aware of the potential downsides but will not prioritise profits over ethics. To address these concerns, while Civox’s AI does record calls with the voters to further train Ashley, the data of the person is anonymised. ALSO READ | In a ‘historic’ first, an AI-powered ‘robot lawyer’ will defend a human in US court It also includes a measure where, if the conversation goes off-topic or becomes abusive, the AI politely ends the call. While the US Federal Election Commission has begun looking into whether to regulate AI use in campaigns, there is very little clarity about whether what Daniels is doing is legal or not, but she does plan on using her experience with AI to find ways to regulate it. “If I’m the first one to deploy tools that rely on AI in the electoral process, I can help figure out what policies and regulations are useful and valuable and also train the electorate in recognizing what ethical AI use in campaigning looks like,” the Democrat candidate told Forbes. Classified documents case: Trump's threat on being imprisoned in spotlight after release of trial date

A report by the Times has shed light on former US President Donald Trump’s plans to rope in a female candidate for vice presidency as his running-mate should he land the 2024 Republican nomination. Trump parted ways with his former Vice President Mike Pence after he rejected his bid to delegitimise swing states that voted for his opponent Joe Biden.

For over the last few years, Trump and his supporters have sporadically vilified Pence, who has now launched his bid for the Republican presidential nomination. However, his campaign is languishing in third spot behind Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Who could be Trump’s female running-mate?

The Times report suggested three names who Trump could partner with -- Marjorie Taylor Greene, Elise Stefanik and Kristi Noem. Of these three, both Greene and Stefanik are fierce pro-MAGA stalwarts. Just last month, they introduced measures into the house attempting to expunge both of Trump’s impeachments.

However, experts are of the opinion they are too attached to the MAGA campaign that they may further end up ostracising a neutral electorate. On the other hand, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem is being hailed as the most appealing to the general electorate. She is not just a staunch Trump loyalist but also has administrative experience as a governor since 2019. Much to the delight of Trump and his supporters, she has thrown her weight behind several right-wing measures.

Why Trump wants to have a female running-mate?

By choosing a female running-mate, Trump wants to improve his appeal among undecided young female voters. The 2020 election analysis showed that he performed poorly among women voters. He lagged far behind the support gathered by Joe Biden. Although his support among women voters is significantly higher this time—44 per cent against 39 per cent last year—he still lags behind Biden.
