Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance, on Saturday (August 10), addressed criticism of his past remarks on childless Americans, and defended the Trump campaign's immigration proposals during an interview with ABC’s "This Week" anchor Jonathan Karl.&nbsp;

As the 2024 presidential race heats up with Vice President Kamala Harris taking the lead on the Democratic ticket, the Ohio senator said he was confident of the GOP's chances of returning to the White House.&nbsp;

"I think we're going to win. I also think that we have to work as hard as possible for the remainder of the election to try to persuade Americans to vote for us," Vance stated while calling for a strong final push in the campaign.

In a prior speech to the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, Vance proposed the idea of giving extra votes to parents and suggested that parents should have more voting power.

When questioned about these remarks, Vance called his statements as a "thought experiment" rather than a serious policy proposal.&nbsp;

"Do I regret saying it? I regret that the media and the Kamala Harris campaign has, frankly, distorted what I said," he told Karl, stressing that he intended to advocate for a more pro-family stance.

Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday (July 30) night issued a direct challenge to former President Donald Trump to debate her before the upcoming November election.&nbsp;

Speaking during a campaign rally in Atlanta, Harris slammed her Republican rival and said, "He won't debate, but he and his running mate sure seem to have a lot to say about me."

"Well, Donald, I do hope you'll reconsider to meet me on the debate stage because, as the saying goes, if you got something to say, say it to my face," she said to thunderous applause.

Kamala Harris dares Donald Trump to debate: 'Say it to my face!'

Former United States President and Republican presidential candidate&nbsp;Donald Trump reiterated remarks made on Friday (Jul 26) and suggested that Christians would never need to vote again if he wins the presidency in November.&nbsp;

However, the former president denied any intention to stay in office beyond the constitutionally mandated two terms during an interview with Fox News on Monday (Jul&nbsp;29).

The recent controversy began with Trump's comments on Friday, where he told the crowd, "Get out and vote, just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what? It will be fixed, it will be fine, you won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians."&nbsp;

The statement sparked outrage among Democrats who labelled it as authoritarian and anti-democratic.

But in a Monday (July 29) interview with Fox News, Trump attempted to clarify his comments while attempting to throw the spotlight on low voter turnout from the&nbsp;Christian community.

"I said, vote for me, you’re not going to have to do it ever again. It’s true," he said. "Because we have to get the vote out. Christians are not known as a big voting group. They don’t vote. And I’m explaining that to them. You never vote. This time, vote. I’ll straighten out the country, you won’t have to vote anymore. I won’t need your vote."

He then repeated his statement from Friday once more, saying his message had been: "Don’t worry about the future. You have to vote on Nov. 5. After that, you don’t have to worry about voting anymore. I don’t care, because we’re going to fix it. The country will be fixed and we won’t even need your vote anymore, because frankly we will have such love, if you don’t want to vote anymore, that’s OK."

When the host Laura Ingraham pointed out that Democrats interpreted his remarks as suggesting the end of future elections, the former president&nbsp;responded by saying that&nbsp;he was unaware of such interpretations.&nbsp;

He told Ingraham that he would leave office after four years if reelected, stating, “Of course. By the way … I did last time.”

Trump's spokesperson previously told the Washington Post that his remarks were about uniting the country and bringing prosperity to every American.&nbsp;

Donald Trump repeats 'you won't have to vote any more' claim

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Monday defended his running mate, Senator JD Vance, amid controversy over Vance's past comments about "childless cat ladies."&nbsp;

The remarks, made in 2021, have resurfaced after Trump selected the Ohio senator as his running mate earlier this month.&nbsp;

<h2 bis_size="{&quot;x&quot;:7,&quot;y&quot;:116,&quot;w&quot;:649,&quot;h&quot;:26,&quot;abs_x&quot;:40,&quot;abs_y&quot;:1866}">What did Vance say?</h2>

Back in 2021, Trump's running mate JD Vance had criticised Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats, labelling them as a "bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives".

The damning statement has become a political headache for the Republican White House contenders' White House campaign.

Defending Vance, he explained that Vance had an "interesting family situation" and that his comments were an expression of his personal experiences and values.&nbsp;

President Donald...Duck?: Elon Musk claims Google biased against Trump, interfering in US Elections

The Donald Trump vs Kamala Harris presidential race is heating up. On Saturday, the two political rivals traded barbs from afar, calling each other names. While Harris called Donald Trump "just plain weird," Trump in exchange painted her as an "evil," and "unhinged" person.

This war of words marked a tumultuous week in the 2024 presidential race.

<h2>'He said- she said'</h2>

Harris' comments, as per Reuters, came just a few days after she ascended to the top of the presidential nominee list after being backed by US President Joe Biden.

During a private fundraiser headlined by singer-songwriter James Taylor, Harris criticised Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance's rhetoric was "just plain weird."&nbsp;

Harris called herself an "underdog," and said, "We are the underdogs in this race, but this is a people-powered campaign."

"Donald Trump has been resorting to some wild lies about my record. And some of what he and his running mate are saying, well, it's just plain weird," she said.

The phrase 'weird' as per the report represents a new Democratic strategy, with the Harris campaign portraying Trump as "old and quite weird."

At the fundraiser, Harris, 59, contrasted her prosecutorial background with Trump's criminal record, framing her campaign as forward-looking in contrast to what she termed 'felon' Trump's desire to return the country to a "dark past."

Hours later, Trump retaliated at a rally in St. Cloud, Minnesota, accusing Harris of wanting to "destroy the country" and attacking her stance on public safety and immigration. Trump, 78, described Harris as "even worse" than Biden, declaring that her presidency would end the American dream.

"If a crazy liberal like Kamala Harris gets in, the American dream is dead," Trump said.

Trump's speech was filled with grievances and baseless claims about election fraud.

Harris' candidacy has revitalised the Democratic campaign, which had struggled with doubts about Biden's viability.

Since Biden's exit, Harris has raised over $100 million, including $1.4 million at Saturday's fundraiser attended by around 800 supporters.&nbsp;

'China will dominate' if US ignores crypto, warns Trump at Bitcoin 2024 convention

Republican Donald Trump leads Democratic U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris by 48% to 46% in a New York Times/Siena College poll of registered voters conducted July 22 to 24 and published on Thursday.

US Poll | Trump vs Harris: Who's favoured?

Fox News has invited Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump to debate each other in Pennsylvania on September 17. The invitation comes a day after Trump said he would be willing to debate Harris. Watch in for more details!

US Polls: Trump responds to Harris' debate challenge

The flux in the American politics after President Joe Biden's disastrous debate performance against his predecessor and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on June 28 reached pinnacle on July 13 when Trump survived an assassination attempt. A <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/how-trump-assassination-attempt-has-turbocharged-his-presidential-re-run-740763">turbocharged</a> Republican campaign appeared all too belligerent against an ageing Joe Biden, and just then over a week later on July 21, the serving US president announced his withdrawal from the race to the White House.

Hours later,&nbsp;Kamala Harris, a smiling vice president who once served as a&nbsp;prosecutor-general, emerged as the face of Democrats against Donald Trump.&nbsp;

The India-US ties, at least since the time when the two countries shed off the nuclear sanction baggage during Bill Clinton's presidency in the early 2000s, have largely been bipartisan. Whether it's a Democrat or Republican in the White House, the Washington-Delhi ties have been marked with a larger pattern of consistent elevation to strategic relevance.&nbsp;

In the last few months, the ties between the two countries suffered after allegations were levelled at India for an assassination plot against Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in the US.

As India-US ties continue to face the yesteryear's challenges underscored by Washington's consistent <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/us-travel-advisory-on-india-warns-americans-against-visiting-kashmir-manipur-other-indian-regions-744223">lecturing on New Delhi's purported record</a> of democratic freedoms especially&nbsp;since the penultimate year of Biden presidency, let's take a look at what a potential Kamala Harris presidency might look like for India-US ties.&nbsp;

<h2>On Jammu and Kashmir</h2>

Harris has had strong views of the state of Jammu and Kashmir but has fallen short of holding a defining position on the same.

When India abrogated article 370 of constitution that gave the region a semi-autonomous status, Harris said that the US must "remind the Kashmiris that they are not alone in the world. We are keeping a track on the situation. There is a need to intervene if the situation demands."

<h2>On India-US ties</h2>

Harris has described the India-US relationship as "unbreakable".

In 2017, she tweeted a welcome message for Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he visited the United States, "I welcome Indian PM @NarendraModi to the United States and reaffirm the unbreakable bonds between our two nations."

India has some inkling of what to expect from a potential Kamala Harris administration, since she is already the serving vice president. It is unlikely that her policies will differ greatly from Biden's.

But regardless of exact policies towards India, the presence of an Indian-American at the highest echelon of American politics would enhance people-to-people links between the two countries.

<h2>On immigration</h2>

Harris has served as a lead co-sponsor for legislation to increase the number of green cards that could go to countries like India and China. It ultimately did not pass but the proposed legislation ended up underscoring Harris as an important figure for immigrants seeking permanent residency in the United States.&nbsp;

Accusing her of covering up Joe Biden's "mental unfitness," he said that Democratic Party bosses were behind the incumbent US President's decision to step down from the election race.

<h2>Biden tells America why he quit the election race</h2>

Speaking to the&nbsp;American public, Biden said he quit the election race to "unite his party".

Addressing the popular debate around his age, the 81-year-old leader said,&nbsp;"There is a time and a place for long years of experience in public life. There's also a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices, yes, younger voices."

Biden said that the "defence of democracy, which is at stake, is more important than any title."

"I have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. That is the best way to unite our nation."

Touting the achievements of his term, Joe Biden said that he is the first US president who can say that America is presently not at war anywhere.

<h2>Why was the speech significant?</h2>

The July 25 speech was significant for two reasons:

Number one - This was possibly the last Oval Office speech of&nbsp;Joe Biden, the 46th and current President of the United States.

Number two - Joe Biden's first public speech since&nbsp;announcing his withdrawal from the presidential elections, used the Oval Office of the White House, a powerfully symbolic setting used by US presidents for moments of grave historical importance

<h2>Did Biden mention Trump?</h2>

While Biden did not mention Republican presidential nominee and political rival Donald Trump by name, he did refer to him as a 'tyrant' in a thinly veiled reference.

Calling&nbsp;the United States the "most powerful idea," in world history, the incumbent US president&nbsp;in his televised speech from the Oval Office said&nbsp;"America's an idea, an idea stronger than any army, bigger than any ocean, more powerful than any dictator or tyrant."

He warned the American public that&nbsp;democracy is at stake in the November election. Rejecting&nbsp;accusations that he will be a lame duck for the rest of his one-term presidency, he said,&nbsp;"Over the next six months I will be focused on doing my job as president,"&nbsp;adding that he would keep trying to lower costs for families and defend freedoms including the right to abortion.

"I have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. That is the best way to unite our nation." Touting the achievements of his term, Joe Biden said that he is the first US president who can say that America is presently not at war anywhere. Why was the speech significant? The July 25 speech was significant for two reasons: Number one - This was possibly the last Oval Office speech of Joe Biden, the 46th and current President of the United States. Number two - Joe Biden's first public speech since announcing his withdrawal from the presidential elections, used the Oval Office of the White House, a powerfully symbolic setting used by US presidents for moments of grave historical importance Also read | 'Simply not true': Elon Musk denies media reports of massive $45mn donations to Donald Trump Before this, President Joe Biden used the Oval Office thrice: in October 2023, to seek additional funding for war-torn Ukraine; in June 2023, wrapping up the debt ceiling drama that had Washington and the financial markets on tenterhooks for weeks, and recently on Sunday (Jul 14) to ask Americans to cool down after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Did Biden mention Trump? While Biden did not mention Republican presidential nominee and political rival Donald Trump by name, he did refer to him as a 'tyrant' in a thinly veiled reference. Calling the United States the "most powerful idea," in world history, the incumbent US president in his televised speech from the Oval Office said "America's an idea, an idea stronger than any army, bigger than any ocean, more powerful than any dictator or tyrant." He warned the American public that democracy is at stake in the November election. Rejecting accusations that he will be a lame duck for the rest of his one-term presidency, he said, "Over the next six months I will be focused on doing my job as president," adding that he would keep trying to lower costs for families and defend freedoms including the right to abortion. Thulasenthirapuram, a village in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvarur district shot to fame in the year 2020, as it was traced to be the village from where then to-be US Vice President Kamala Harris' maternal family hailed. The town is back in the limelight again and has put up a billboard wishing Harris, who is now in the race for the most powerful job in the world —&nbsp; that of the US President.

If all goes well for her and the Democrats, Kamala would be the first woman to hold the US presidential office, and the second person of colour to do so, after Barack Obama.&nbsp;

This week, a massive billboard with a large picture of a cheerful and smiling Kamala Harris, was placed right beside the temple gate. In big bold lettering in Tamil, it reads "we wish for your victory" and hails Indo-American Kamala as a "daughter born as a result of penance."

The billboard also refers to her as a "daughter of this land".&nbsp;

During her 2020 campaign, Kamala Harris had referred to her Indian roots, and her visits to her grandfather's home in Chennai city, her walks on the city's Besant Nagar beach. Kamala's grandfather, PV Gopalan, an Indian civil servant, had lived in the upscale Besant Nagar locality of Chennai, then known as Madras.

Interestingly, Harris also used the Tamil word "Chitthi" (aunt), and created a buzz amid Indians on social media.&nbsp;

While a substantial portion of the billboard at the Thulasenthirapuram temple is occupied by the picture of Harris and the words of praise for her, there's also a picture of a couple on the billboard. The pictures are of Mr. Suthakar and&nbsp;Mrs. Arulmozhi Suthakar, who are members and lower-level functionaries of Tamil Nadu's ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party.

The DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had written to Kamala Harris in 2020, after she was declared the VP-elect. Then the opposition leader of Tamil Nadu, Stalin had shared a handwritten letter to Kamala Harris, in Tamil.

Kamala Harris' maternal family hails from the minority Tamil Brahmin community. Interestingly, the DMK and their ideological mentors are anti-Brahmin, supposedly rationalist political parties.&nbsp;

Wishing and greeting her with ''Vanakkam(Hello),'' MK Stalin had shared on social media that it was a matter of pride for the state's people that America's first woman Vice-President has a link to Tamil Nadu, as her mother hailed from the state.

He had said he chose to write in Tamil since it would bring more happiness to her, as Tamil is the mother tongue of Harris' mother&nbsp;Dr. Shymala Gopalan Harris. It is not known whether&nbsp; Stalin ever got a revert from the American vice president.&nbsp;

As for Suthakar, the DMK functionary from Thulasenthirapuram, the billboard, the celebrations and the temple rituals are their way of showering their best wishes on their "daughter of the land", Kamala Harris.

Speaking to WION, he claimed that the billboard was put up based on the wishes of the villagers. On Tuesday (July 23), they conducted a puja in the temple and prayed for Kamala Harris, while also distributing sweets to the devotees.

He added&nbsp;that this practice would continue during the routine puja in the temple. Suthakar is a businessman who holds agricultural lands and undertakes government contracts to build roads and buildings.&nbsp;

Suthakar recalled how the village had celebrated Harris' 2020 win as an early Diwali, by sharing sweets and bursting firecrackers.

"We will do more and can spend to the tune of lakhs of rupees, if she is elected US president," he tells WION.

He sincerely hopes that Harris would visit their town. Suthakar hopes that India-US ties would prosper under a possible Harris' presidency.

He adds that his leader, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin should meet her and bring more investments, jobs, and industries. MK Stalin is expected to visit the US in the month of August. It is not known whether he would be seeking a meeting with Kamala Harris.&nbsp;

Kamala's&nbsp;maternal roots are in India, while her paternal roots trace back to Jamaica. However, as is evident from her public life, Harris has predominantly projected herself as an African-American or a Black woman.

While Harris had made occasional references to her Indian roots, they were only in lighter vein, when speaking of her formative years. Even when it comes to Harris' policy portfolio, there has been no significant focus on India, save for a customary meeting with Prime Minister Modi when he visited the US.&nbsp;

Few members of Harris' maternal family still live in India. This includes Kamala's maternal uncle Balachandran and her aunt Dr. Sarala Gopalan, both of whom are highly accomplished individuals in their respective fields of work.

As for her India visits,&nbsp;Harris has not visited the south Asian country in the last decade and her widely known visits are the few she made during her childhood, which she had also mentioned in campaign speeches. But even those visits are known to have been to Chennai and not the ancestral village of Thulasenthirapuram.

Recalling Kamala's upbringing in the US, Dr Sarala had mentioned that Shyamala Harris was a strict mother who taught the daughters values, "told her what to do and to fight for everything."&nbsp;

Biden makes 1st public appearance after exiting US elections, to address America from Oval Office at THIS time

Donald Trump's lawyers on Monday (July 22) asked a New York appeals court to throw out the $454 million judgment against the Republican presidential nominee for US Elections 2024. They argue that the monetary policy was unconstitutional and that most of the case&nbsp;should be barred because of the time passed since the alleged conduct.

"The award of $464 million in a case with no victims, no proven injuries, and no losses is not remotely defensible," wrote Trump's lawyers. &nbsp;

They argued that "the 'actual harm inflicted' is nil," and thus.&nbsp;"any punitive award would result in a ratio that is virtually infinite. The award of $464 million in a case with no victims, no proven injuries, and no losses is not remotely defensible."

<h2 data-analytics-observe="off" data-article-gutter="true" data-component-name="paragraph" data-editable="text" data-uri="cms.cnn.com/_components/paragraph/instances/clyxq0yut00093b6jf017b401@published">Latest attempts to escape verdict</h2>

This is Trump's latest attempt to escape the verdict and the&nbsp; $454 million judgment levied by state Judge Arthur Engoron. In February, Engoron found the ex-president and his two&nbsp;sons—Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump—and their real estate business liable of fraud.

Next month, the New York attorney general's office will present their opposition papers. As early as September, the appeals court could take up the case.

His lawyers argue that the judge made an error in not throwing out most of the case after the appeals court ruled last year, before the civil trial, that certain behaviour was outside the legal time limit.

According to them, Trump should have been dismissed as a defendant and that if the statute of limitations was enforced, roughly $350 million of the judgment would be wiped out. Previously, before the trial, a state appeal had dismissed Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump as a co-defendant in the case.

The loans for the Old Post Office building and the 40 Wall Street building were the only timely claims mentioned in the attorney general's complaint, they wrote.

"Applying the correct statute of limitations eliminates $350,980,057 of the $464,576,229 judgment for Appellants bound by the Tolling Agreement, and it eliminates all of the judgment for those not bound by the Tolling Agreement, including the Trust and the individual Appellant," they contend.

However, as per Enrogon&nbsp;ruling from before the trial, even&nbsp;if the loans were closed before the 2014 statute of limitations, fraudulent financial statements that were subsequently issued count as separate fraudulent acts.

The judge said that New York Attorney General Letitia James was not "challenging the loans, the closings, or the disbursements,"&nbsp;but&nbsp;the financial documents containing false and misleading information.

Trump's team has accused Judge&nbsp;Engoron of enacting a "punitive" penalty against the former president, reports CNN.

"The monetary award is a punitive penalty imposed for retributive and deterrent purposes. It is both grossly disproportional under the Eighth Amendment’s Excessive Fines Clause and grossly excessive under the Due Process Clauses."

As per them, the Judge ordered Trump to pay too much in disgorgement–or the return of ill-gotten gains–for the sale proceeds of the Old Post Office and Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point.

Trump's attorneys argued that Engoron failed to consider the investments made by Trump's company in the properties when ordering the full proceeds to be paid back instead of calculating just the net profit.

In the filing, Trump's lawyers claim that Engoron made uninformed judgments about the valuations of Trump's properties.

Taking issue with&nbsp;Engoron’s judgment opinion that Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort was valued at $18 million, they said "Supreme Court engaged in a series of erroneous valuations of President Trump’s properties, including valuing Mar-a-Lago at $18 to $27.6 million, a tiny fraction of its obvious value, and these errors infected the subsequent trial".

Calling for a "complete reversal" of the judgment,&nbsp;Trump attorney Chris Kise said&nbsp;"Such an outrageous miscarriage of justice is profoundly un-American, and a complete reversal is the only means available to restore public confidence in the integrity of the New York judicial system."

The judge said that New York Attorney General Letitia James was not "challenging the loans, the closings, or the disbursements," but the financial documents containing false and misleading information. Unconstitutional Trump's team has accused Judge Engoron of enacting a "punitive" penalty against the former president, reports CNN. "The monetary award is a punitive penalty imposed for retributive and deterrent purposes. It is both grossly disproportional under the Eighth Amendment’s Excessive Fines Clause and grossly excessive under the Due Process Clauses." As per them, the Judge ordered Trump to pay too much in disgorgement–or the return of ill-gotten gains–for the sale proceeds of the Old Post Office and Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point. Taking issue with Engoron’s judgment opinion that Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort was valued at $18 million, they said "Supreme Court engaged in a series of erroneous valuations of President Trump’s properties, including valuing Mar-a-Lago at $18 to $27.6 million, a tiny fraction of its obvious value, and these errors infected the subsequent trial". Calling for a "complete reversal" of the judgment, Trump attorney Chris Kise said "Such an outrageous miscarriage of justice is profoundly un-American, and a complete reversal is the only means available to restore public confidence in the integrity of the New York judicial system." Thomas Matthew Crooks' alma mater, the Bethel Park High School, has denied allegations that the gunman, who attempted to assassinate former US President Donald Trump, was relentlessly bullied. It also refuted to confirm that Crooks was rejected from the school's rifle team due to poor aim.

The statement, released on Saturday (Jul&nbsp;20) follows Crooks' dramatic assassination attempt on July 13. Perched on the roof of a bottle manufacturing plant in Butler County, Pennsylvania, Crooks tried to shoot Trump during a rally.&nbsp;

Bethel Park High School asserted that their records do not support claims of Crooks being bullied.&nbsp;

As per The Guardian reports, the school said that it was "a painful misconception that Thomas Crooks was relentlessly bullied in school."

"According to our records, Mr Crooks excelled academically, regularly attended school and had no disciplinary incidents, including those related to bullying," the school stated.&nbsp;

They described Crooks as a "quiet, bright young man" who "generally got along with his teachers and classmates".

It also said that the school's rifle team coach "does not recall meeting" Trump's attacker.

"It is possible that Crooks informally attended a practice, took a shot and never returned," said the school adding, "We don't have any record of that happening".

<h2>Former students' allegations</h2>

This statement contrasts with testimonies from Crooks' former schoolmates. Jason Kohler, a 21-year-old alum, recounted how Crooks’ attire and solitary lunches marked him as a "loner" and an "outcast," leading to significant bullying.&nbsp;

Another former student, Jameson Myers, told ABC News that Crooks' poor shooting skills barred him from joining the school rifle team, a claim echoed by another schoolmate Jameson Murphy, who told the New York Post that Crooks was a "comically bad shot."

<h2>Why did Crooks try to kill Trump?</h2>

Authorities have yet to determine Crooks’ motive. Investigations reveal that Crooks had legally obtained the rifle from his father and meticulously planned the assassination attempt. This included purchasing ammunition on the day of the shooting and using a drone to survey the rally site.

In November 1972, at the age of 29 years, he was elected as the Delaware senator. "The question really, to me, is about the baby," he added.
