While the US is gearing up for the 2024 Presidential Elections in the country, the Indians are pumped up for another interesting contest.&nbsp;

At the Republican National Convention (RNC)’s first meeting on Monday (Jul 15), Donald Trump announced JD Vance as his running mate- a move believed to change the way US elections were supposed to happen earlier.

It’s Republican’s JD Vance vs Democrat’s Kamala Harris now for the Vice President race. As for Indians, it means something entirely different.&nbsp;

Indians on social media are pitting for Tamil Nadu vs Andhra Pradesh because Harris’ mother hails from Chennai and Vance’s wife Usha Chilukuri had her roots in Andhra Pradesh.

<h2>US Elections 2024: It’s Tamil Nadu vs Andhra Pradesh for Indians</h2>

Kamala Harris' India connection made headlines both in the US and India when she was chosen as Joe Biden’s running mate in the 2021 elections. This time, it's Republican VP candidate JD Vance’s wife Usha who is attracting eyeballs for being of Indian origin.&nbsp;

Harris’ Indian roots can be traced to the Besant Nagar neighbourhood of Chennai where her mother was born, Shyalama Gopalan. Her mother moved to the US as a teen for a doctoral degree at the University of California Berkeley. There, she met Donald J. Harris of Jamaican descent. The couple got married in 1963 and welcomed daughter Kamala in 1964, followed by daughter Maya in 1967.

Kamala Harris vs JD Vance in US, but it's Tamil Nadu vs Andhra Pradesh on social media. Here's why

Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old Pennsylvania man, was identified as the&nbsp;shooter behind the assassination attempt on Republican Donald Trump at a campaign rally on Saturday (Jul 13).

Crooks, who was killed by Secret Service snipers after firing multiple shots at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has been described by his former schoolmates as "quiet" and a "nice kid".

The motive behind Crook's shooting spree remains a mystery, but as per Kevin Rojek, special agent in charge of the FBI's Pittsburgh field office, the 20-year-old man "so far" had no indications of any mental health issues.&nbsp;

<h2>"Never have thought him capable," of this, says Crook's friend</h2>

Talking to CBS News, Crooks' childhood friend Jameson Myers described the Trump shooter as a "nice kid who never talked poorly of anyone," adding "I never have thought him capable of anything I've seen him do in the last few days."

"When I did speak with him, he just seemed like a normal boy who was not particularly popular but never got picked on or anything," said Myers.&nbsp;

Myers and Crooks, as per the publication, used to be close in elementary school but not in high school. They graduated together.

He also revealed that Crooks, who used a semi-automatic rifle to carry out the failed assassination attempt, had tried out for the Bethel Park High School varsity rifle team in his freshmen year. However,&nbsp;he had failed to make the junior varsity roster.

<h2>Middle-class 'lonely' kid</h2>

A resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, Crooks as per another classmate, Jason Kohler, came across as "lonely" and "socially reserved".

Kohler, as reported by news agency&nbsp;AFP, revealed that the shooter was "just bullied. He was bullied so much." He said that Crooks was bullied for his hunting and camouflage clothes.

Dan Grzybek, a county council representative in the area where Crooks grew up, called the neighbourhood "pretty firmly middle class, maybe upper-middle class," reported The New York Times.

Crooks, as per the report, was working in a nursing home and the organization expressed shock upon hearing about his shooting at Trump, killing a rally attendee in the process.

Trump shooter Thomas Crooks was a 'nice kid' who got 'bullied so much' reveal his former classmates

Donald Trump is one of the most protected political figures on the Earth, yet, somehow, on Saturday (July 13), an untrained assassin managed to aim a rifle at his head. As per a damning report, this happened even as the roof which shooter Thomas Crooks used to shoot at Trump was identified as a high-priority vulnerability spot for the Secret Service agency.

Citing a former senior Secret Service source familiar with the Butler, Pennsylvania rally site, NBC News reported that the site was known from previous Secret Service protections. In fact, the spot was a well-known vulnerability.

<h2>Security 'failure'</h2>

The Security Service source called the assassination attempt a security "failure" and told NBC that two counter-sniper teams were there on site. They did not need approval to shoot, added the source.

"I mean, I think anybody with a little common sense, with no prior experience, just looking to the right of the stage, [would know] that is a very, very vulnerable spot to have a building for one thing, with a roof."

"You have multiple teams, you know, the CAT [counter assault team], the CS [counter sniper] team, the CAT team, the actual site, advance team, supervisor. I mean, they should have all called that out," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Where did the shooter fire from?</h2>

Thomas Crooks, identified as the shooting suspect by the FBI, was on the roof of a nearby building, around 500 feet (152 m) from former US president Donald Trump.

Richard Goldinger, the district attorney for Butler County, Pennsylvania, has also expressed his shock at the shooting.

"That's the most surprising thing to me, when we have a former president here, that a guy was...able to get up on a roof and take a shot," he said in a conversation with MSNBC.

"We had some law enforcement in that building, (making it) even more surprising that he was able to get up there," he added.

It's not just him. Officials and common people are all wondering how such a major security lapse happened.

Richard Painter, a law professor at the University of Minnesota, who previously worked as a White House official under George W. Bush, has called for "a detailed investigation into this egregious security failure."

"If there is a rooftop within rifle range of a president or a presidential candidate, it's the Secret Service that should be on that rooftop."

"Have they ever heard of the Texas Book Depository?" he asked, referring to the building from where President John F Kennedy's assassin Lee Harvey Oswald murdered him using a long-range rifle in 1963.

"The shooter was outside the Secret Service perimeter. What kind of a perimeter is that? We know that any crackpot can all too easily buy a high-powered rifle in the United States. The perimeter needs to be as far as the eye can see," he added.

Donald Trump's brush with death on Saturday (Jul&nbsp;13) will be investigated as a potential act of "domestic terrorism," announced the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Sunday (Jul&nbsp;14).

"We are investigating this as an assassination attempt, but also looking at it as a potential domestic terrorism act," said Robert Wells, the assistant director of the FBI counterterrorism division, while talking to reporters.

Updating the press about the shooter Thomas Crooks' motives, Wells said that the shooter acted alone and had no known ideology.

FBI to investigate Trump shooting as act of 'domestic terrorism'. What does this mean?

US President Joe Biden on Sunday (Jul&nbsp;14) used the formal setting of the White House Oval Office to ask Americans to cool down after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Biden's use of the Oval Office, for only the third time in his term, holds significance, especially as Republicans openly blame him for the attack on the ex-president.

"We can't allow this violence to be normalised," he said, adding "The political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It's time to cool it down."&nbsp;

"We all have a responsibility to do this."

<h2>Hidden messages in Biden's use of the Oval Office</h2>

Biden said that the shooting, which his political rival Trump escaped relatively unscathed, "calls on all of us to take a step back".

For his message to Americans, Biden used the Oval Office, a move that has some subtle significance:

The appearance in the daunting Oval Office allowed the embattled 81-year-old President, who has been facing heat for his age and doubts about his capabilities, to flex the power of incumbency. As the President of the US and as the hopeful for the next presidency, this symbolic image may help satiate some fears, both inside the Democratic Party and outside.

Before this, President Joe Biden used the Oval Office twice:&nbsp;once in October 2023, to seek additional funding for war-torn Ukraine and a second time in June 2023 wrapping up the debt ceiling drama that had Washington and the financial markets on tenterhooks for weeks.

The question that poses itself here is, given that members of the Republican Party have sought to blame him for the attack on Trump, was the Oval Office image a show of his strength as the US President?

<h2>Republicans blame Biden for Trump shooting</h2>

Within hours of the attack on Donald Trump, Biden's re-election campaigning team, as per Reuters, raced to change their campaign. The team was pulling down television ads and suspending political communications, some of which contained verbal attacks against former president Trump.

This comes as Senator J D Vance, one of the people on the list of the Republican's potential running mates, claimed that the Biden campaign "rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination," reports AFP.

Not only Vance, but a growing number of Republicans have sought to pin the blame on Democrats. It must be noted that the shooter, Thomas Crooks, was a registered Republican who had made donations to the left, but the FBI has, as of now, not identified his ideology.

Trump Shooting - US President Biden uses Oval Office to address Americans: Was it a subtle power flex?

Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican Party presidential candidate, was shot at in an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday (July 13) and survived miraculously with a bullet hitting his right ear.

<h2>Who shot at Trump?</h2>

The "subject involved" in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump has been identified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as 20-year-old Thomas Mathew Crooks. His motive for trying to kill Trump is not clear at the moment. He attempted the horrific act using an&nbsp;AR-style rifle.

He graduated from the Bethel Park High School, the school district confirmed Sunday. He&nbsp;graduated with the Class of 2022.

<h2>Where was the shooter firing from?</h2>

The US Secret Service in a statement said that the suspected shooter "fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside the rally" before being "neutralised" by agents.

As per a BBC report, a person who described himself as an 'eyewitness',&nbsp;said he saw the shooter crawling up a roof near the event. The person said that he and the people he was with had spotted the shooter and started pointing at the man, trying to alert security.

The gun that was used in the attack was reportedly bought by&nbsp;Crooks's father.

The shots, as per Reuters, appeared to have come from outside the area secured by Trump's Secret Service team, said the service in its statement.

A local prosecutor, according to an AFP report, confirmed that the shooter was outside the event grounds.&nbsp;

"I don't know how he would have gotten to the location where he was, but he was outside the grounds. And I think that's something that we're going to have to figure out how he got there," said Butler County district attorney Richard Goldinger.

Speaking to the news agency, a Trump supporter who was in the crowds said,&nbsp;"I heard about four shots and I saw the crowd go down and then Trump ducked also real quick. Then the Secret Service all jumped and protected him as soon as they could. We are talking within a second they were all protecting him."

The man, identified as Ron Moose, describing the chaos, said that&nbsp;he heard additional shots, but was unsure who fired them.&nbsp;

After the attack, the Republican presidential presumptive candidate Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, and said, "I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear."

Donald Trump narrowly escapes death as gunman shoots at him during campaign rally in Pennsylvania

Billionaire business magnate Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has reportedly made a 'sizeable'&nbsp;donation to America PAC, a super political action committee dedicated to supporting former US President Donald Trump's bid for re-election in November, Bloomberg reported citing sources familiar with the development.&nbsp;

The exact amount of Musk's contribution has not been disclosed. However, America PAC is scheduled to reveal its list of donors on July 17, following which the nature of financial backing behind Trump's presidential re-run would be known.

While Elon Musk has not officially endorsed any candidate for the 2024 presidential race, he has become increasingly vocal about his political views on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter. In recent months, Musk has openly criticised President Joe Biden's immigration policies and expressed strong support for conservative positions by throwing his massive social media clout behind the Conservative 'influencers'.

Notably, last September, Musk visited the US-Mexico border at Eagle Pass, Texas, and described the immigration situation as "beyond insane and growing fast."&nbsp;

His criticism extended to the Biden administration following the tragic killing of Augusta University nursing student Laken Riley in Athens, Georgia, by an undocumented migrant.

Musk's outspokenness included a pointed comment on X: "Dems won’t deport, because every illegal is a highly likely vote at some point. That simple incentive explains what seems to be insane behaviour. It has become so brazen that a gang of illegals can beat up police officers on camera in Times Square, get out of jail for free and still not get deported!"

Interestingly, in March, Musk had stated on X that he had no plans to financially support any presidential candidate. "Just to be super clear, I am not donating money to either candidate for US President," he wrote.

Musk's reported donation coincides with a substantial fundraising period for Trump's campaign. Make America Great Again Inc., a leading super PAC, announced it had raised $104 million during the second quarter of 2024. Additionally, Trump's campaign, together with the Republican National Committee, reported a combined total of $331 million raised over the past three months. This surpasses President Biden's re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee which reportedly raised $264 million in the same period.

Also watch | US: Elon Musk bashes Joe Biden for 'importing voters' × Musk's outspokenness included a pointed comment on X: "Dems won’t deport, because every illegal is a highly likely vote at some point. That simple incentive explains what seems to be insane behaviour. It has become so brazen that a gang of illegals can beat up police officers on camera in Times Square, get out of jail for free and still not get deported!" Interestingly, in March, Musk had stated on X that he had no plans to financially support any presidential candidate.

Joe Biden's troubles seem to have no end. The 81-year-old presumptive Democratic Party presidential candidate for US Elections 2024 has been facing public ire for his advanced age and the alleged inability to lead America.&nbsp;

Since his dry-as-dust, halting performance in the debate against rival Donald last month, Biden has faced calls from young Democrat leaders to step aside. Rumours suggested that senior leaders of the party were also pressuring him in private to do so. Now, a senior Democrat, Senator Peter Welch, a long-serving member of Congress from Vermont, has publicly asked Biden to withdraw from the presidential race.

This comes as Democratic Party leaders challenged the US President to provide convincing evidence of a viable path to his re-election.

Joe Biden faces trouble within his own party but there is another battle raging on the campaign front and this one has been mounted by Donald Trump's allies. Watch in for more details!

US Elections 2024: Super PAC finances negative ad campaign against Joe Biden

Donald Trump has challenged Joe Biden to another presidential debate and an 18-hole golf match, vowing to donate to charity if he loses the game.

"I'm also officially challenging crooked Joe to an 18-hole golf match right here on Doral's Blue Monster… It will be among the most-watched sporting events in history. Maybe bigger than the Ryder Cup or even the Masters," Trump said in Florida.

He vowed to donate $1 million to charity if he loses the golf match.

"And if he wins, I will give the charity of his choice, any charity of his choice, $1 million. And I'll bet you he doesn't take the offer," he said.

"Did you ever see him swing?,"&nbsp;the presumptive Republican presidential nominee asked supporters in a campaign speech.

The Biden campaign responded by saying the US president "doesn’t have time for Donald Trump’s weird antics–he’s busy leading America and defending the free world. Donald Trump is a liar, a convict, and a fraud only out for himself–par for the course."

"We’d challenge Donald Trump to create jobs, but he lost 3 million. We’d challenge Donald Trump to stand up to Putin, but he bent the knee to him. We’d challenge Donald Trump to follow the law, but he breaks it. We’d challenge Donald Trump to not destroy our country, but that’s all his Project 2025 aims to do", said Biden campaign spokesperson James Singer.

<h2>Seventh Democrat seeks Biden's exit from race</h2>

In the wake of a disastrous performance at the June 27 presidential debate, Biden faced calls to step aside, from his own Democratic Party, media, and donors. But in a stern letter to the party, he said he's staying in the race and asked for the "drama to end".

Trump's comments came even as a seventh House Democrat asked Biden to leave the race.

Mikie Sherrill issued a statement on Tuesday (July 9) seeking Biden's exit.

"Because I know President Biden cares deeply about the future of our country, I am asking that he declare that he won’t run for reelection and will help lead us through a process toward a new nominee," said the Representative from New Jersey.

<h2>Biden showing signs of neurodegeneration?</h2>

There have been reports in the past days that a neurologist with specialisation in Parkinson's disease had visited the White House eight times in the past eight months.

A separate neurologist, speaking to NBC News, said Biden has signs of 'neurodegeneration.'

“I could have diagnosed him from across the mall,” said Dr. Tom Pitts, who claimed Biden had “classic features of neurodegeneration”.

Russia prefers Donald Trump as the new President of the United States, revealed a US intelligence officer while briefing reporters on Tuesday (July 9).

US Elections 2024 are the contest that decides which leader Americans prefer, so why does Russia's preference matter?

<h2>Russia's preference and the US Elections</h2>

In the US elections, the public will decide whether Democrat presumptive candidate and current US President Joe Biden will once again take the helm of the Western power or whether his rival Republican presumptive candidate Trump will take over.

However, Russia can influence the decision in favour of one candidate or the other, thus impeding fair elections.

<h2>Russia and US elections: Historical context</h2>

As per the Reuters news agency, historically, US intelligence assessments have indicated that Moscow attempted to influence the elections in favour of Trump in both 2016 against Hillary Clinton and 2020 against Joe Biden.&nbsp;

Talking to the press, the official from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) reiterated that these assessments remain unchanged.

<h2>Why does Russia prefer Trump?</h2>

Russia's favour for Trump largely has to do with the US's role in the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war.

"We have not observed a shift in Russia's preferences for the presidential race from past elections, given the role the US is playing with regard to Ukraine and broader policy toward Russia," said the official.

Trump has in recent days criticised the extent of US military support for Ukraine — totalling around $60 billion since Russia's invasion in 2022 — and referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as "the greatest salesman ever."&nbsp;

Furthermore, Trump's national security advisers have suggested ending US military aid to Ukraine unless it engages in peace talks with Russia.&nbsp;

On NATO, the ex-president&nbsp;plans to "encourage" Russia to do "whatever the hell they want" against alliance members not meeting defence spending targets. This is in direct contradiction to NATO's collective defence obligations.

Conducting the briefing with anonymity, officials from ODNI, FBI, and National Coordinator for Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience officials, highlighted the difference between election influence (shaping poll outcomes or undermining democratic processes) and interference (disrupting the ability to hold a free and fair vote).&nbsp;

Currently, the US has not found evidence of plans by any country to disrupt the upcoming November elections,&nbsp;they said.

However, the official revealed that Russia has begun efforts to influence specific voter groups in battleground states, promoting divisive narratives and denigrating particular politicians. These efforts, primarily conducted through social media and using US voices, aim to shape the presidential, congressional, and public opinion.

<h2>Is China looking to&nbsp;influence US elections?</h2>

As per the report, unlike Russia, China is not actively planning to influence the presidential race, although it seeks to expand its capability to collect and monitor data from social media "probably to better understand and eventually manipulate public opinion," said the official.

US Elections 2024: American intelligence reveals Russia still prefers Trump as President. Here's why

US Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday (July 9) reiterated her support for Joe Biden. Describing the embattled president as a "fighter" Harris during her speech at a Las Vegas event focused on Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities&nbsp;warned that Biden's rival, Republican Donald Trump would turn America into a 'dictatorship' if re-elected to the White House.&nbsp;

Speaking at a campaign event in Nevada, Harris referred to questions around Biden's age and the rumours about his ability to lead the country and said: "We always knew this election would be tough, and the past few days have been a reminder that running for President of the United States is never easy."

Kamala Harris declares Joe Biden a 'fighter,' warns Trump will push nation into dictatorship

Joe Biden, it seems, is pulling a 'Trump'. The US President, looking forward to another term in the White House, as per reports, has taken a page out of his Republican rival Donald Trump's book. On Monday (Jul 8), the Democrat dialled into a morning TV show, lamenting against the "elite" Democrats asking him to quit the election race.

The move, as per news agency AFP, is reminiscent of Trump's days as a president when he would routinely phone into conservative Fox and Friends TV show prattling about whatever struck his fancy.

<h2>What did Biden say?</h2>

Phoning into liberal-leaning MSNBC network's Morning Joe programme, a fiery-sounding Biden said he's "getting so frustrated by the elites."

"I'm not talking about you guys — the elites in the party, 'Oh, they know so much more,'" he ranted.

Putting out an open challenge to the Democrats against his presidential re-run, he added,&nbsp;"Any of these guys that don't think I should run — run against me. Announce for president, challenge me at the convention."

The "elite" narrative is nothing new. Populist leaders, including Trump, have used it to rally people against the "elites" while being a part of the so-called group themselves.

His phone-in speech of sorts garnered mixed responses. On one hand, Jon Favreau, a former speechwriter for&nbsp;Barack Obama, commented that while Biden's "energy is great", his "message absolutely sucks," labelling it "Angry, defensive, lashing out at all the wrong people."

On the other hand, the likes of Hollywood director&nbsp;Rob Reiner known for movies like When Harry Met Sally&nbsp;said if Biden were to keep up similar performances until the November elections "he'll be able to shut up people like me who think he should step aside."

<h2>Biden goes 'full Trump'</h2>

This is not the only inspiration the usually mild-mannered Biden has taken from Trump.

Joe Biden has taken to touting the huge crowd at his rallies, a move right out of his predecessor's playbook.

At a campaign rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, he boasted to his audience, "We've been drawing big crowds. Ever since the debate, not joking, even that night we had big crowds afterwards."

He has also taken to bragging about his accomplishments, to the press and his congressmen peers — in the letter he wrote recently.

Not only that, Biden has also taken up Trump's typically aggressive persona to slam him, whether by calling him a "loser" a threat to democracy or slamming him for having "sex with a porn star" during the Presidential debate watched by 50 million people.

People have also commented on him borrowing Trump's signature "orange" sheen. As Paul Murray, a commentator on Sky Australia, commented recently, Biden had gone from "white to orange".&nbsp;

"Is he trying to trick the voters of America that he's Donald Trump?" he asked jokingly.

'Trump-style' TV rant: Biden slams Democrat party 'elites,' challenges rivals to run against him

The news mill is rife with reports that US President Joe Biden is under treatment for Parkinson's disease and is consulting a neurologist outside his annual physicals. However, on Monday, the White House batted away the rumours and said that the Parkinson's disease expert's visits to the White House had nothing to do with 81-year-old Biden.

<h2>Why did the Parkinson's expert visit the White House?</h2>

According to a report by Reuters,&nbsp;its review of the White House logs shows that Dr Kevin Cannard, a neurologist and movement disorders specialist from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, had visited the Presidential estate eight times from August 2023 to March 2024.

According to speculations, Dr Cannard was there to consult on Biden's health. However, speaking to the press during a media briefing, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre refused to confirm or elaborate on the doctor's visits but said that the President was not being treated for Parkinson's.

Why did the Parkinson's expert visit the White House? According to a report by Reuters, its review of the White House logs shows that Dr Kevin Cannard, a neurologist and movement disorders specialist from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, had visited the Presidential estate eight times from August 2023 to March 2024. According to speculations, Dr Cannard was there to consult on Biden's health. However, speaking to the press during a media briefing, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre refused to confirm or elaborate on the doctor's visits but said that the President was not being treated for Parkinson's. "Has the President been treated for Parkinson's? No. Is he being treated for Parkinson's? No, he's not. Is he taking medication for Parkinson's? No," she stated. Also read | Biden has Parkinsons? White House rubbishes President Biden Parkinson's speculations, refuses to elaborate on mystery doctor visits

The race is already heating up. In just a few months, the Democratic Party's (presumptive) presidential&nbsp;candidate will face off the Republican Party's (presumptive) candidate in the 2024 US Elections.

Already, many polls show that the elections scheduled for November will be a hard-fought, albeit close race. These are the important dates in the election race set to conclude on November 5.

<h2>US Election Schedule: July 2024</h2>

- July 15-18: At the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the GOP will formally choose its candidate.

- Vice-president face-off: Joe Biden's running mate, Vice President Kamala Harris, has agreed to debate Donald Trump's yet-to-be-announced running mate. The debate by CBS can happen either on July 23 or on August 13.&nbsp;

Trump's campaign is yet to say whether his running mate would debate Harris on CBS.

Another debate between the two running mates may happen on Fox News around the same time. While Trump has accepted the vice presidential debate invite on behalf of his VP candidate, Biden's campaign is yet to revert on Harris' availability.

Fox, as per Reuters, wrote to both campaigns and suggested July 23, August 13 or other dates following the party conventions.&nbsp;The Biden campaign has not confirmed if Harris would debate on Fox.

<h2>US Election Schedule: August 2024</h2>

- By August 7: The Democratic Party will hold a "virtual roll call" to nominate Biden. It is scheduled to take place by August 7, the original ballot certification deadline in Ohio — this date has been pushed back.

- August 19-22: Biden will&nbsp;officially be nominated at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

<h2>US Election Schedule: September 2024</h2>

- September 10: Hosted by ABC, the second debate between Biden and Trump.

- September 18: Should the judge decide to uphold the conviction, Donald Trump, the first sitting or former US president to be convicted of a crime, will be sentenced in the Manhattan hush-money case.&nbsp;

He was found guilty of falsifying documents to cover up a payment to silence a porn star on May 30.

While not a part of the election schedule, this can potentially have huge ramifications on the race to the White House.

The sentencing was scheduled for July 11 but was delayed, so the judge could weigh Trump's argument that he should have been immune from prosecution under the recent landmark Supreme Court ruling. In July, the SCOTUS ruled that presidents cannot be criminally prosecuted for official acts.

<h2>US Election Schedule: November 2024</h2>

- November 5: Election Day

As per Statista, the US has 161.4 million registered voters.&nbsp;

Election results could take days, but would be expected later in November.

<h2>US Election Schedule: 2025</h2>

- January 6: The vice president will preside over the Electoral College vote count at a joint session of Congress at Capitol Hill. They will announce the results and declare who will be the next&nbsp;President of the United States.&nbsp;

In 2020, ahead of the count, then-President Trump lambasted his vice president, Mike Pence, for refusing to try to prevent Congress from certifying Biden's win. He allegedly rallied his supporters, who then attacked the US Capitol.

- January 20:&nbsp;The inauguration ceremony for the election winner and their vice president will happen. At this ceremony, the next president&nbsp;and vice-president will be officially sworn into office.

Trump vs Biden: Important dates in the 2024 US presidential elections

Representative Angie Craig of Minnesota, an important battleground US state, has joined a growing group of House Democrats urging President Joe Biden to end his campaign for a second term.

On Saturday (July 6), Craig emphasised the high stakes involved and her belief that Biden stepping aside would be necessary to avoid a second term for Donald Trump.

This comes amid murmurs about the 81-year-old's capacity to lead America after his abysmal debate performance last month and as a New York Post report claims that Biden's doctor consulted with a Parkinson’s disease expert, at the White House.

<h2>Does Biden have Parkinson's?</h2>

As per a New York Post report published Saturday, this year, Biden's doctor consulted with Dr. Kevin Cannard, a Parkinson’s disease expert.

The damning report is based on White House logs and comes amid questions about Biden's leadership and his advanced age.&nbsp;

As per the report, on January 17, Cannard, a Parkinson’s disease expert at Walter Reed Medical Center, met with Biden's doctor Kevin O'Connor at the White House. Reportedly, this was not a one-off visit, in fact, Cannard has visited the White House eight times since August 2023.

Biden, however, has consistently refused to take a cognitive test, dismissing the need for such an assessment.

In a recent ABC News interview on Friday (July 5), Biden reiterated that no one had suggested he needed a cognitive test.&nbsp;

"No one said I had to … they said I’m good," he said while asked if he had taken specific tests for cognitive capability.&nbsp;

He also dismissed the idea of taking an independent neurological and cognitive exam and releasing the results publicly, claiming, "I get a cognitive test every day… Everything I do—you know, not only am I campaigning, but I'm running the world."

<h2>Democrats call on Biden to quit election race</h2>

Craig joins Reps. Lloyd Doggett, Raul Grijalva, Seth Moulton, and Mike Quigley in urging Biden to step down.

In her statement on Saturday, Craig said, "This is not a decision I've come to lightly, but there is simply too much at stake to risk a second Donald Trump presidency."&nbsp;

Craig, who represents Minnesota's 2nd Congressional District, is one of five House Democrats calling on Biden to withdraw from the race.&nbsp;

"That's why I respectfully call on President Biden to step aside as the Democratic nominee for a second term as president and allow for a new generation of leaders to step forward," she said.

Craig said that she has "great respect," for Biden, but that the debate "coupled with the lack of forceful response from the president himself following that debate, I do not believe that the president can effectively campaign and win against Donald Trump."

"Now is the time to be candid with ourselves."

"I appreciate loyalty. This isn't about loyalty, this is pragmatic politics to avoid a second Trump term."

Biden has Parkinsons? White House logs show disease expert visits; another Democrat urges him to quit race

Just days after Joe Biden's abysmal performance in the debate opposite rival Donald Trump, the White House in a statement on Wednesday (July 3) said that the Democrat leader is "absolutely not" pulling out of the US presidential race.

<h2>'Clear-eyed' Joe</h2>

Speaking to the press, Biden's spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre rejected reports about internal rumblings about finding a replacement candidate before November&nbsp;election. She said that "The president is clear-eyed, and he is staying in the race".

Biden too, in a call with campaign and party staffers said that he is going nowhere.

"I'm in this race to the end and we're going to win because when Democrats unite, we will always win. Just as we beat Donald Trump in 2020, we're going to beat him again in 2024," he said, as quoted by AFP.

Biden repeated the message in an emergency meeting with Democratic governors. The attendees later told AFP that they have pledged their continued support.

<h2>Amid toppling rumours Democrats back Biden</h2>

"As the president continued to tell us, and show us, that he was all in... we said that we would stand with him," said Maryland Governor Wes Moore to reporters speaking alongside Minnesota's Tim Walz and Kathy Hochul of New York.

Walz told the press that Biden was "fit to serve."

In a post on X, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who was also present at the meeting at the White House, said that "he is in it to win it and I support him."

<h2>Biden's abysmal debate performance</h2>

Biden, himself, has gracefully admitted that he performed poorly in the debate. In a radio interview recorded Wednesday with Wisconsin's Civic Media, he bluntly said: "I screwed up. I made a mistake. That's 90 minutes on stage. Look at what I've done in 3.5 years."

In another interview, this one with Pennsylvania's WURD radio on Thursday, he said "I had a bad debate."

The debate&nbsp;last week&nbsp;(Thursday, June 27)&nbsp;has shaken Biden's standing in the 2024 US election race. During the debate, an audience of more than 50 million people saw Biden's hoarse, halting delivery that once again led to questions and debate about his age and his ability to lead the US.

A recent survey by CBS News, shows that following his debate with Trump an increasing number of voters, including Democrats, do not believe that Biden should be running for president.

The survey shows that most voters said that Biden should not run given his campaigning and his effectiveness in office, along with his age. By contrast, Trump among Republicans finds a wide view that he should be running.

A CNN poll conducted by SSRS found that Trump has a 6 per cent lead on Biden — 49 per cent to the Democrat's 43 per cent. Not only that, as per the poll, most people would rather have Kamala Harris run for president.

'Clear-eyed' Joe: White House dismisses rumours of internal rumblings, says Biden is 'staying in the race'

A recent poll has discovered that the majority of voters in the United States believe that the Democrat Party has a better chance of holding on to the White House&nbsp;If they select another presidential candidate and&nbsp;replace&nbsp;Joe Biden.&nbsp;

Last week's debate between him and rival Donald Trump has shaken Biden's approval ratings and, as per the new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, voters nationwide favour Trump over him.

<h2>Trump 'trumps' Biden?</h2>

As per the poll, nationwide, Trump has a 6 per cent lead on Biden — 49 per cent to the Democrat's 43 per cent.

Voters were found to be more likely to support an alternative Democrat candidate. But which candidate?

The poll put&nbsp;Trump against three hypothetical Democrat candidates: Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom and Pete Buttigieg. It found that in a matchup against Trump, current Vice President Harris would lead with 47 per cent compared to Trump's 34 per cent.&nbsp;

Similarly, Newsom would lead Trump with 42 per cent against 36 per cent and Buttigieg would take the lead on the Republican with 42 per cent to his 35 per cent.

This goes to show that instead of Biden, the current voter sentiment would rather have other Democrats face off against Trump.

US Elections 2024: Poll reveals voters prefer Kamala Harris over Biden in matchup against Trump

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Tuesday (July 2) addressed concerns regarding President Joe Biden's performance during last week's debate, and suggested that both him and Republican rival Donald Trump should take a mental acuity test.

Later the same day, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that they have been transparent about Biden's health.

This comes as last week, Biden and Trump faced each other in the first presidential debate of US Elections 2024.

During the debate, Biden, 81, appeared to struggle with maintaining his train of thought and stumbled over his words multiple times. This renewed speculation about his mental capabilities, whether the aged leader is suffering from Alzheimer's and whether he should continue as the Democratic presidential nominee.

On the Republican side, Trump is also fielding similar questions about his mental capabilities.&nbsp;

The Biden vs Trump election fight has not just one but two senior citizens. On the one hand, it is 81-year-old Biden and on the other, 78-year-old Trump. Is either fit for the most important office in America? Let's take a look.

<h2>Nancy Pelosi on Biden, Trump and mental acuity tests</h2>

Pelosi said that it was valid for people to question whether Biden's difficulties on the debate stage were a onetime issue or indicative of a larger problem.

"I think it's a legitimate question to say: Is this an episode, or is this a condition? And so when people ask that question, it's completely legitimate — of both candidates," said Pelosi during an interview on MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports".

"Both candidates owe whatever test you want to put them to, in terms of their mental acuity and their health — both of them," she added.

Pelosi emphasised her confidence in Biden's ability to "continue to be a great President of the United States," but said he needs for him to demonstrate his capabilities in unscripted settings. She recommended that Biden participate in multiple interviews with serious journalists to address any question and "just sit there and be Joe."

Pelosi also noted mixed reactions from elected Democrats about Biden's continuation in the race.&nbsp;

Later, when asked for further clarification, Pelosi's spokesperson, Ian Krager, said she "has full confidence in President Biden and looks forward to attending his inauguration on January 20, 2025."

<h2>How do Democrats feel about Biden's alleged health issues?</h2>

According to Pelosi, many Democrats express unwavering support and say "Joe's our guy. We love him; we trust him. He has vision, knowledge, judgment, and integrity. The other guy has none of the above."

However, others are not so happy about him being the presumptive Democratic Party presidential candidate. On Tuesday, Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas became the first Democrat to call for Biden to exit the race.&nbsp;

Talking to CNN on Tuesday (July 2) Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Ill., another Democrat said that while it is Biden's decision, they must honestly acknowledge his performance issues. "We have to be honest with ourselves that it wasn't just a horrible night".

<h2>White House races to quash questions about Biden's capability</h2>

White House press secretary Jean-Pierre in a statement on Tuesday stressed that the administration has been transparent about Biden's health.&nbsp;

"We have put forward a thorough, transparent annual report on his health, so they have said it (a cognitive test) is not warranted, it is not necessary," she said.

When asked about whether the octogenarian underwent a neurological scan or saw a doctor after the debate, she said that people need to "take a step back," and that Biden just had a "bad night."

"We understand. We're not taking away from what you all saw or what the American people saw. We understand it was a bad night," said Jean-Pierre.

A day after the debate, Biden acknowledged during a campaign event on Friday that he has aged and doesn't debate as well as he used to but insisted that he remains capable of handling the job. This narrative was reiterated in a new campaign ad his re-election campaign team released on Monday (July 1).

The White House last released Biden's health information in February 2024 after the President underwent a routine physical exam.

Then, Jean-Pierre rejected suggestions that Biden should take a cognitive test and said that he "passes a cognitive test every day" as he "moves from one topic to another topic, understanding the granular level of these topics."

<h2>Isn't Trump just three years younger than Biden?</h2>

Former President Donald Trump, 78 — only three years younger than Biden — has also faced similar scrutiny regarding his mental fitness, particularly after confusing Pelosi with former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley earlier this year. Some business executives who last month met with Trump described him as "remarkably meandering" and unable to "keep a straight thought".

On the Republican side, Trump is also fielding similar questions about his mental capabilities. The Biden vs Trump election fight has not just one but two senior citizens. She recommended that Biden participate in multiple interviews with serious journalists to address any question and "just sit there and be Joe." US President Joe Biden on Monday (Jul 1) warned that the Supreme Court's landmark ruling granting ex-president Donald Trump "absolute immunity" sets a "dangerous precedent" that the Republican would not shy from exploiting if elected in November.

"This nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America," said the Democrat presumptive presidential candidate for the 2024 US elections.

"Each of us is equal before the law. No one — no one — is above the law, not even the President of the United States."

Addressing the press at the White House, Biden said that "for all practical purposes today's decision almost certainly means there are no limits to what a president can do. This is a fundamentally new principle, and it's a dangerous precedent."

"Any president—including Donald Trump—will now be free to ignore the law," said Biden, urging&nbsp;the people to decide if they once again want to "entrust" Trump with the Presidency.

"The American people must decide if they want to entrust… once again, the presidency to Donald Trump, now knowing he'll be more emboldened to do whatever he pleases, whenever he wants to do it," he said.

Donald Trump is charged with conspiracy attempt to defraud America and the obstruction of an official proceeding - elections. He allegedly did this by rallying his supporters on January 6, 2021, to prevent the joint session of Congress from being held to certify Biden's win in the election.

"The public has a right to know the answer about what happened on January 6, before they're asked to vote again this year," Biden said, adding, "Now because of today's decision, that is highly, highly unlikely. It's a terrible disservice to the people of this nation."

'No kings in America': Supreme Court's 'absolute immunity' for Trump sets 'dangerous precedent', warns Biden

United States President Joe Biden's re-election campaign has aired a new 60-second ad campaign that seeks to help the presumptive Democratic candidate recover from his abysmal performance at his first face-to-face debate with rival Donald Trump this election.

<h2>Debate fallout</h2>

Last week's (Wednesday, June 27), debate has shaken Biden's standing in the 2024 US election race. During the altercation, an audience of more than 50 million people saw Biden's hoarse, halting delivery that once again led to questions and debate about his age and his ability to lead the US.

The latest ad, which as per the New York Times has been aired in key battleground states, doesn't show footage of the debate. Instead, it shows a charged-up Biden at a rally in North Carolina, held on Thursday (June 28), a day after the debate.

'I know how to do this job': Joe Biden's new election campaign ad paints Donald Trump as 'liar'

With a little over four months left for the United States presidential election, the presumptive nominees Joe Biden and Donald Trump took the stage for the first debate, on Thursday (Jun 28) night. The debate was marked by Biden's underwhelming performance and his inability to call Trump out on his <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/biden-stumbles-as-trump-spreads-falsehoods-how-the-us-media-reported-the-debate-736056">many false claims</a>.

<h2>High-stakes debate</h2>

After <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/us-presidential-election-2024-timeline-2024-2025-735905">months of campaigning</a>, Biden and Trump finally went head-to-head for the first time since the last presidential debates in 2020. A lot has changed since then, except for one thing.&nbsp;

Four years ago, Americans were not thrilled with their choices, and this time around, it is more of the same.

On one hand, there is the 81-year-old Democrat whose age has been in the spotlight more than his policies and time in office and on the other&nbsp;78-year-old&nbsp;convicted felon.&nbsp;

Biden is the oldest American president and has repeatedly failed to quell the concerns about his age, and this debate may be the final nail in the coffin for&nbsp;Democrats.&nbsp;

Thursday’s debate was also Trump’s first since he opted out of Republican primary debates.&nbsp;

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s performance was much like one of his rallies marked by false claims, attacking people, and boasting about his (non)achievements.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened during the debate?</h2>

In an interview with MSNBC after the debate, Vice President Kamala Harris said, “It was a slow start…but I thought it was a strong finish.”&nbsp;

This quote essentially encapsulates Biden’s underwhelming performance; as he did manage to talk about some of the policies that he plans to work on if reelected, calling it a “strong finish” would be a bit of a stretch.&nbsp;

The 90-minute debate between the two oldest presidential candidates was hosted by CNN in Atlanta, Georgia, with no audience.&nbsp;

The incumbent president started slow and was heard speaking in a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/watch-biden-freezes-forgets-lines-at-crucial-presidential-debate-appears-sick-with-raspy-voice-735857">hoarse voice</a> which the White House officials attributed to a cold.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Trump seemed more succinct in his responses while his successor struggled to speak within the time limit and had to be stopped by the moderators on multiple occasions.&nbsp;

The former president also often avoided answering the questions asked in favour of responding to what his rival said.&nbsp;

Biden and Trump were asked questions related to a range of issues including, the economy, abortion, and foreign policy.&nbsp;

Economy

The debate started with questions about one of the top concerns among American voters – the economy.&nbsp;

With soaring inflation and a rise in the cost of living, voters are concerned about which candidate will take over the White House for the next four years and how their policies will affect the economy.&nbsp;

While both Trump and Biden have improved certain sections of the economy during their time in office, recent polls have indicated that voters favour Republicans over Democrats when it comes to handling the economy.&nbsp;

Less than 15 minutes into the debate, Biden while talking about Medicare and tax reforms seemingly lost his train of thought.&nbsp;

Tax reform would create money to help “strengthen our healthcare system, making sure that we’re able to make every single solitary person eligible for what I was able to do with the, with the COVID, excuse me, with dealing with everything we had to do with,” he&nbsp;said.&nbsp;

After pausing and a few seconds of fumbling, the incumbent president continued, “We finally beat Medicare.”

Meanwhile, Trump falsely&nbsp;claimed that the US had the “greatest economy in the history of our country” when he was in office.

According to a fact-check by the Associated Press, the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a massive recession and the Trump administration borrowed $3.1 trillion in 2020 to stabilise it.&nbsp;

Furthermore, even if the pandemic factor is excluded, growth after inflation under Trump averaged 2.49 per cent, as per data from the World Bank.&nbsp;

The former president also left fewer jobs than when he took office.&nbsp;

Abortion

On the campaign trail, Trump has repeatedly taken credit for overturning Roe v Wade, the constitutional right to an abortion, which had been in place for 50 years.&nbsp;

Abortion is <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/biden-vs-trump-in-us-presidential-debate-2024-top-takeaways-explained-735850">one of the issues</a> where Democrats have the upper hand and support from voters, but Biden failed to rise to the occasion.&nbsp;

Surprisingly, Trump said that he supported the recent decision where the Supreme Court unanimously rejected an effort to restrict access to the abortion pill, but&nbsp;still thinks that the decision about abortion rights should be left up to the states.&nbsp;

However,&nbsp;in true Trump fashion, he went on to make an outlandish claim that Democrats are allowing “late-term abortions” – which is not a medical term – and falsely claimed the former governor of Virginia supported killing babies.&nbsp;

The claim stems from an interview when the then-governor of Virginia Ralph Northam, a Democrat,&nbsp;was describing a hypothetical situation where a foetus was severely deformed or wasn’t otherwise viable.&nbsp;

He suggested that the “infant would be delivered,” “kept comfortably,” and “resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired.” However, at no point did he talk about killing the newborn.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Biden said he would restore Roe v Wade, but then seemingly mixed up two different stories as he digressed and somehow ended up talking about a “young woman who just was murdered…by an immigrant.”

Immigration

Since the beginning of the debate, Trump seemed eager to talk about the border and immigration; bringing&nbsp;it up 11 and a half minutes into the debate saying that the only jobs that Biden created were for illegal immigrants.&nbsp;

Notably, the former president said the word “border” 36 times during the 90-minute debate and repeatedly attacked his successor over border security.&nbsp;

Immigration and border security are the top Republican talking points and have been central to their messaging ahead of this election.&nbsp;

While talking about immigration, Trump falsely claimed “people are coming in and killing our citizens at a level like we’ve never seen before.”&nbsp;

He also claimed that Biden wants to “open borders” which is also incorrect considering the incumbent has recently signed restrictive measures into law which are similar to that of his predecessor.&nbsp;

Foreign policy&nbsp;

The presidential nominees were asked about the Russia-Ukraine war as well as the conflict&nbsp;between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. But, Trump repeatedly attacked Biden over America’s chaotic departure from Afghanistan in 2021.&nbsp;

Notably,&nbsp;Russian President&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/russias-sarcastic-jibe-at-biden-trump-debate-putin-didnt-set-his-alarm-736142">Vladimir Putin</a> was mentioned nearly 12 times during the debate as Trump and Biden butted heads over the Ukraine war.

“If we had a real president, (who)...was respected by Putin, he would have never invaded Ukraine,” said the former president.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Biden called the Russian president a “war criminal” and criticised Trump for the time he said he would let Putin take over Ukraine and pull out of NATO. “He has no idea what the hell he’s talking about.”

Speaking about the war in Gaza, Trump said that Biden has “become a Palestinian” and is not letting Israel “finish the job”.&nbsp;

On the contrary, the Biden administration has repeatedly come under fire over their support for Israel, with polls showing a dip in the number of young voters backing the incumbent US president because of it.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Biden spoke about his peace plan for Gaza and said that the US is “providing Israel all the weapons they need.”

January 6 and election result

When asked about the January 6 attack on the Capitol by his supporters, Trump avoided answering the question and said on that day “nobody” was coming through the border, we had the “lowest taxes ever,” “lowest regulations ever,” and the US was “respected all over the world”.&nbsp;

Subsequently, the debate moderator pressed Trump to answer saying that voters are “worried” that you will do that again.&nbsp;

Eventually, Trump, speaking of the day when his supporters stormed the US Capitol in a bid to stop the certification of Biden’s victory, falsely claimed there were a “relatively small number of people” and in “many cases were ushered in by the police.”

However, the attack on the US Capitol has been described as the deadliest assault on the seat of American power in over 200 years and Trump’s claims about that day have been debunked time and again.&nbsp;

Biden called him a “whiner” who cannot handle loss and said that Trump did nothing to stop his supporters, who he said Trump has referred to as “great patriots of America,” from storming the Capitol.&nbsp;

Subsequently, the Republican was asked if would accept the results of the upcoming elections regardless of who wins. Trump dodged the question two times by rambling about other issues before he was asked a third time.&nbsp;

“If it’s a fair and legal and good election, absolutely,” said Trump in his response.&nbsp;

The former president and his supporters, including many from the Republican party, have repeatedly spewed false claims&nbsp;that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.&nbsp;

<h2>Attacks against each other</h2>

An analysis by the New York Times showed that Trump and Biden collectively spent nearly 31 minutes <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-makes-fiery-attack-on-biden-calls-him-manchurian-candidate-paid-by-china-735959">attacking each other</a>.&nbsp;

The former president reportedly spent at least 44 per cent of his time launching attacks against his successor who, in turn, spent 35 per cent of his time responding and/or taking shots at his predecessor.&nbsp;

At one point, Trump took a jab at Biden for his incoherence and said, “I really don’t know what he said at the end of that sentence. I don’t think he knows what he said.”

The two also challenged each other to a golf match, a driving test, and a cognitive test. “I told you before that I’m happy to play golf. If you can carry your own bag, think you can do it?” Biden told Trump.&nbsp;

Arguably, one of the comical moments of the debate was when the incumbent US president attacked his predecessor over his many legal woes.&nbsp;

Trump was seen nodding along until Biden accused him of having sex with adult film actor Stormy Daniels, while his wife, Melania, was pregnant. “You have the morals of an alley cat,” Biden said.&nbsp;

“I didn’t have sex with a porn star,” Trump said in response.&nbsp;

<h2>Who won this round?</h2>

It is safe to say that this debate did not go well for Biden and his underwhelming performance has sent Democrats into a frenzy.&nbsp;

Prominent Democratic lawmakers are worried, a Congressional aide who works for a Democratic senator told Reuters. She noted her boss is “sitting with other frontline members and panicking. Let the Democratic bedwetting begin.”

But in addition to the panic, some <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/democrats-embarrassed-as-biden-stumbles-during-debate-mull-replacing-him-735913">reports suggest</a> that Democrats are seeking to replace Biden with many&nbsp;anxious over&nbsp;his performance in the high-stakes&nbsp;elections.&nbsp;

A flash poll by CNN following the debate showed Trump was leading against Biden with 67 per cent of debate watchers voting for the former president when compared to the 33 per cent supporting the incumbent president.&nbsp;

“Joe Biden looked very weak and confused right from the start…I was shocked and dismayed. I hate to see our president acting that way on TV and in front of the world,” one of the 13 “undecideds” told Reuters.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-presidential-debate-trump-won-but-how-badly-did-biden-lose-735954">jury is still out</a> on whether Trump can be called a winner in this debate considering the number of lies he spewed on the stage.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Biden, despite his nearly week-long prep at Camp David presidential retreat and facts on&nbsp;his side, mumbled and stumbled his way through the debate.&nbsp;

According to a fact check by CNN, Trump made more than 30 false and misleading claims during the debate when compared to Biden’s nine.&nbsp;

This point was aptly put&nbsp;by CNN’s political commentator, Van Jones who said, “Biden stuttered, but he told the truth.”&nbsp;

He added, “He looked terrible, but his policies were good. Trump spoke plainly, but he lied the whole time. He looked good, but his policies were terrible.”

The next presidential debate is scheduled for September 10 and will be hosted by ABC News.&nbsp;

With a little over four months left for the United States presidential election, the presumptive nominees Joe Biden and Donald Trump took the stage for the first debate, on Thursday (Jun 28) night. The debate was marked by Biden's underwhelming performance and his inability to call Trump out on his many false claims. High-stakes debate After months of campaigning, Biden and Trump finally went head-to-head for the first time since the last presidential debates in 2020. A lot has changed since then, except for one thing. Four years ago, Americans were not thrilled with their choices, and this time around, it is more of the same. On one hand, there is the 81-year-old Democrat whose age has been in the spotlight more than his policies and time in office and on the other 78-year-old convicted felon. Biden is the oldest American president and has repeatedly failed to quell the concerns about his age, and this debate may be the final nail in the coffin for Democrats. Thursday’s debate was also Trump’s first since he opted out of Republican primary debates. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s performance was much like one of his rallies marked by false claims, attacking people, and boasting about his (non)achievements. What happened during the debate? In an interview with MSNBC after the debate, Vice President Kamala Harris said, “It was a slow start…but I thought it was a strong finish.” This quote essentially encapsulates Biden’s underwhelming performance; as he did manage to talk about some of the policies that he plans to work on if reelected, calling it a “strong finish” would be a bit of a stretch. The 90-minute debate between the two oldest presidential candidates was hosted by CNN in Atlanta, Georgia, with no audience. The incumbent president started slow and was heard speaking in a hoarse voice which the White House officials attributed to a cold. Meanwhile, Trump seemed more succinct in his responses while his successor struggled to speak within the time limit and had to be stopped by the moderators on multiple occasions. The former president also often avoided answering the questions asked in favour of responding to what his rival said. Biden and Trump were asked questions related to a range of issues including, the economy, abortion, and foreign policy. Economy The debate started with questions about one of the top concerns among American voters – the economy. With soaring inflation and a rise in the cost of living, voters are concerned about which candidate will take over the White House for the next four years and how their policies will affect the economy. While both Trump and Biden have improved certain sections of the economy during their time in office, recent polls have indicated that voters favour Republicans over Democrats when it comes to handling the economy. Less than 15 minutes into the debate, Biden while talking about Medicare and tax reforms seemingly lost his train of thought. Tax reform would create money to help “strengthen our healthcare system, making sure that we’re able to make every single solitary person eligible for what I was able to do with the, with the COVID, excuse me, with dealing with everything we had to do with,” he said. After pausing and a few seconds of fumbling, the incumbent president continued, “We finally beat Medicare.” Meanwhile, Trump falsely claimed that the US had the “greatest economy in the history of our country” when he was in office. According to a fact-check by the Associated Press, the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a massive recession and the Trump administration borrowed $3.1 trillion in 2020 to stabilise it. Furthermore, even if the pandemic factor is excluded, growth after inflation under Trump averaged 2.49 per cent, as per data from the World Bank. The former president also left fewer jobs than when he took office. Abortion On the campaign trail, Trump has repeatedly taken credit for overturning Roe v Wade, the constitutional right to an abortion, which had been in place for 50 years. Abortion is one of the issues where Democrats have the upper hand and support from voters, but Biden failed to rise to the occasion. Surprisingly, Trump said that he supported the recent decision where the Supreme Court unanimously rejected an effort to restrict access to the abortion pill, but still thinks that the decision about abortion rights should be left up to the states. However, in true Trump fashion, he went on to make an outlandish claim that Democrats are allowing “late-term abortions” – which is not a medical term – and falsely claimed the former governor of Virginia supported killing babies. The claim stems from an interview when the then-governor of Virginia Ralph Northam, a Democrat, was describing a hypothetical situation where a foetus was severely deformed or wasn’t otherwise viable. He suggested that the “infant would be delivered,” “kept comfortably,” and “resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired.” However, at no point did he talk about killing the newborn. Meanwhile, Biden said he would restore Roe v Wade, but then seemingly mixed up two different stories as he digressed and somehow ended up talking about a “young woman who just was murdered…by an immigrant.” Immigration Since the beginning of the debate, Trump seemed eager to talk about the border and immigration; bringing it up 11 and a half minutes into the debate saying that the only jobs that Biden created were for illegal immigrants. Notably, the former president said the word “border” 36 times during the 90-minute debate and repeatedly attacked his successor over border security. Immigration and border security are the top Republican talking points and have been central to their messaging ahead of this election. While talking about immigration, Trump falsely claimed “people are coming in and killing our citizens at a level like we’ve never seen before.” He also claimed that Biden wants to “open borders” which is also incorrect considering the incumbent has recently signed restrictive measures into law which are similar to that of his predecessor. Foreign policy The presidential nominees were asked about the Russia-Ukraine war as well as the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. But, Trump repeatedly attacked Biden over America’s chaotic departure from Afghanistan in 2021. Notably, Russian President Vladimir Putin was mentioned nearly 12 times during the debate as Trump and Biden butted heads over the Ukraine war. “If we had a real president, (who)...was respected by Putin, he would have never invaded Ukraine,” said the former president. Meanwhile, Biden called the Russian president a “war criminal” and criticised Trump for the time he said he would let Putin take over Ukraine and pull out of NATO. “He has no idea what the hell he’s talking about.” Speaking about the war in Gaza, Trump said that Biden has “become a Palestinian” and is not letting Israel “finish the job”. On the contrary, the Biden administration has repeatedly come under fire over their support for Israel, with polls showing a dip in the number of young voters backing the incumbent US president because of it. Meanwhile, Biden spoke about his peace plan for Gaza and said that the US is “providing Israel all the weapons they need.” January 6 and election result When asked about the January 6 attack on the Capitol by his supporters, Trump avoided answering the question and said on that day “nobody” was coming through the border, we had the “lowest taxes ever,” “lowest regulations ever,” and the US was “respected all over the world”. Subsequently, the debate moderator pressed Trump to answer saying that voters are “worried” that you will do that again. Eventually, Trump, speaking of the day when his supporters stormed the US Capitol in a bid to stop the certification of Biden’s victory, falsely claimed there were a “relatively small number of people” and in “many cases were ushered in by the police.” However, the attack on the US Capitol has been described as the deadliest assault on the seat of American power in over 200 years and Trump’s claims about that day have been debunked time and again. Biden called him a “whiner” who cannot handle loss and said that Trump did nothing to stop his supporters, who he said Trump has referred to as “great patriots of America,” from storming the Capitol. Subsequently, the Republican was asked if would accept the results of the upcoming elections regardless of who wins. Trump dodged the question two times by rambling about other issues before he was asked a third time. “If it’s a fair and legal and good election, absolutely,” said Trump in his response. The former president and his supporters, including many from the Republican party, have repeatedly spewed false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump. Attacks against each other An analysis by the New York Times showed that Trump and Biden collectively spent nearly 31 minutes attacking each other. The former president reportedly spent at least 44 per cent of his time launching attacks against his successor who, in turn, spent 35 per cent of his time responding and/or taking shots at his predecessor. At one point, Trump took a jab at Biden for his incoherence and said, “I really don’t know what he said at the end of that sentence. I don’t think he knows what he said.” The two also challenged each other to a golf match, a driving test, and a cognitive test. “I told you before that I’m happy to play golf. If you can carry your own bag, think you can do it?” Biden told Trump. Arguably, one of the comical moments of the debate was when the incumbent US president attacked his predecessor over his many legal woes. Trump was seen nodding along until Biden accused him of having sex with adult film actor Stormy Daniels, while his wife, Melania, was pregnant. “You have the morals of an alley cat,” Biden said. “I didn’t have sex with a porn star,” Trump said in response. The jury is still out on whether Trump can be called a winner in this debate considering the number of lies he spewed on the stage. US presidential debate: A fumbling Biden let’s Trump get away with his 'usual lies'

A day after a video that showed 81-year-old United States President Joe Biden seemingly freeze on stage, his former boss Barack Obama jumping in to save the day, the White House has slammed Republicans for spreading "cheapfake" videos that purport to show Biden in a state of mental and physical decline.&nbsp;

<h2>Deceptive videos</h2>

In a statement on Monday, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre referred to these videos as "cheapfake" and emphasised that they were deceptively edited to mislead viewers.

"It tells you everything that we need to know about how desperate Republicans are here," said Jean-Pierre.

Recent clips shared by multiple media outlets&nbsp;and Republican social media accounts include one from the G7 summit in Italy, where Biden appears disoriented. Jean-Pierre clarified that the footage was edited to omit Biden's interaction with parachutists, which involved giving them a thumbs up. This claim was also debunked by NBC, who provided alternative footage showing Biden engaging with the skydivers.

"This was widely fact-checked… including by conservative media," said the press secretary, adding, "if you run that tape a little bit longer than you'd see … what was happening."

Another clip showed Biden standing still while other world leaders danced during a White House concert. Jean-Pierre defended Biden, stating that standing and listening to music should not be interpreted as a health issue.

White House slams Republicans over deceptive 'cheapfake' videos of Biden's alleged mental decline

Amid concerns about how his advanced age might affect his ability to lead the United States for another term, President Joe Biden, at a star-studded campaign fundraiser event on Saturday (June 15) was seen standing still, staring into the crowd.&nbsp;

The 81-year-old had to be grabbed by his wrist and led offstage by his former boss, Barack Obama. This moment was captured on camera and&nbsp;occurred after a 45-minute interview with Jimmy Kimmel at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.&nbsp;

Viral video: Biden allegedly freezes on stage, Obama steps in. What happened?

Former US president Donald Trump has promised to defund schools teaching things like gender ideology and critical race theory if he is reelected this coming November.

Speaking at Turning Point Action's "The People's Convention" in Michigan on Saturday (June 15), Trump said he would further cut funding to federal schools that require vaccines and masks.

<h2>Education, a top priority</h2>

"On day one, I will sign a new executive order to cut federal funding for any school pushing critical race theory, transgender insanity, and other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content onto the lives of our children," said the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

"And I will not give one penny to any school that has a vaccine mandate or a mask mandate," he stated, adding that he will also "keep men out of women’s sports".

Trump underscored that education is a top priority in his campaign. He had previously revealed plans to "break up" the Department of Education, alter schools' curriculums, and allow school principals to be elected.

He promised support for the Second Amendment, which upholds an individual's right to own a gun.

<h2>Trump on gender-affirming care and LGBT rights</h2>

Trump accused Democrats of forcing the "liberal indoctrination of America's youth" and vowed to reverse President Joe Biden's administration's expansion of Title IX, which prevents federally funded schools from restricting transgender students' access to bathrooms, locker rooms, and pronouns aligned with their identities.&nbsp;

He also said he would prohibit doctors from providing gender-affirming care and not allow federal agencies to promote "the concept of sex and gender transition at any age".

Previously, in January, he called the promotion of the LGBTQ agenda a form of "child abuse" and laid out a strategy to end what he termed "chemical, physical, and emotional mutilation of our youth".

Education, a top priority "On day one, I will sign a new executive order to cut federal funding for any school pushing critical race theory, transgender insanity, and other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content onto the lives of our children," said the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. "And I will not give one penny to any school that has a vaccine mandate or a mask mandate," he stated, adding that he will also "keep men out of women’s sports". Trump underscored that education is a top priority in his campaign. He had previously revealed plans to "break up" the Department of Education, alter schools' curriculums, and allow school principals to be elected. He promised support for the Second Amendment, which upholds an individual's right to own a gun. He also said he would prohibit doctors from providing gender-affirming care and not allow federal agencies to promote "the concept of sex and gender transition at any age". Previously, in January, he called the promotion of the LGBTQ agenda a form of "child abuse" and laid out a strategy to end what he termed "chemical, physical, and emotional mutilation of our youth". Addressing an audience in the key battleground state, 'felon' Trump emphasised using tariffs as a deterrent.&nbsp;

Responding to a question about his plans to help shut off the flow of people entering the US via the southern border, Trump said, "We have tremendous economic power… if China or some other country is behaving badly, we have things called tariffs that are so severe."

"We are going to be so tough and if a country is not going to behave, we're going to tariff the hell out of that country," he added.

However, as per an AFP report, the republic did not share details about the exact kind or size of tariffs he would impose.

The event marked Trump's first public appearance since being convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels.&nbsp;

At the campaign event, AFP reported&nbsp;that the audience's questions included topics like the cost of living but remained largely focused on immigration. This issue as per polls is one of the primary concerns for voters ahead of the November 5 election.

To address these concerns and prove his might on an issue he's perceived to be badly performing on, Biden recently issued an executive order restricting asylum claims when illegal border crossings exceed 2,500 per day. It also facilitates deportations to Mexico.&nbsp;

The order, intended to be temporary until crossings fall below 1,500 per day, has faced criticism from both sides of the political spectrum. Republicans view the measure as insufficient, while others criticise it as too harsh.

Trump, seizing on this discontent, promised to rescind the order immediately if elected. "On Day One of my administration, I will be rescinding Crooked Joe's outrageous executive order," he declared, labelling it as "pro-invasion, pro-child trafficking… pro-drug dealers" without providing evidence.

Addressing a cheering crowd, he also vowed, "I will terminate every single open borders policy of the Biden administration."

The Republican leader's previous term was marked by strict immigration measures, including a controversial travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries.

US President Joe Biden, at a fundraising event near San Francisco for his re-election campaign, on Friday (May 10) joked that he wished his rival former president Donald Trump had injected himself with a little bleach.

He said this while bringing up one of Trump's most controversial suggestions from the early days of the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;

<h2>Bleach wars: He said, (s)he said</h2>

Biden humorously wished that his Republican rival Trump had taken his own advice about injecting bleach as a potential treatment for the virus.

During the gathering, Biden highlighted the outbreak that marked Trump's tenure, reminding his audience of the recommendation Trump infamously made during a press briefing in 2020.&nbsp;

"Remember him saying the best thing to do is just inject a little bleach in your arm? That’s what he said. And he meant it. I wish he had done a little bit himself," quipped the Democrat.

During the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020,Trump had proposed that an "injection inside" directly into the human body of disinfectants, such as bleach or isopropyl alcohol, might combat the virus. The comment had quite predictably sparked widespread disbelief and concern at the time.

The current president also poked fun at what he described as Trump's "love letters" exchanged with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.&nbsp;

Trump, during his presidency, had famously engaged in diplomacy with Kim. The duo had engaged in a number of high-profile meetings, exchanged personal letters, copies of which Trump reportedly kept in a loose-leaf binder in the Oval Office.

However, in his jest, Biden made a gaffe, accidentally referring to Kim as the president of South Korea.

Biden's mocking digs at Trump's past comments aren't new. Previously, on April 24 in Washington, Biden joked that Trump had indeed followed through with the bleach injection and "it all went to his hair."

Trump too rarely leaves a chance to slam his democrat rival. Recently, blasting Biden during a speech in Freeland&nbsp;(Michigan), Trump, as per AFP, had said: "Every single thing he touches turns to s**t."&nbsp;

His involvement would have marked another Trump family member entering the political scene, joining his siblings—Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and Tiffany Trump—who are active in politics and often seen at Republican events.

Both Eric and Donald Jr as per Reuters report, citing a&nbsp;campaign official are already on Florida's 41-person delegate list for the convention in Milwaukee. Trump's youngest daughter Tiffany Trump too is on the delegate list.

However, a statement from the office of Melania Trump, Donald Trump's third wife put a stop to the convention plan for Barron,&nbsp;as per AFP.

"While Barron is honoured to have been chosen as a delegate by the Florida Republican Party, he regretfully declines to participate due to prior commitments," read the statement.

<h2>Why is Milwaukee convention important?</h2>

The convention, scheduled to take place in Milwaukee, will see Donald Trump officially being crowned as the Republican nominee for the upcoming presidential election against rival Democrat Joe Biden.&nbsp;

It will see delegates from each state designating their candidate&nbsp;for the upcoming November election, and Barron's participation would have been a significant moment.
