The House majority Whip had narrowly won an internal Republican ballot to replace ousted speaker Kevin McCarthy. According to US media reports, only 117 of Emmer’s colleagues voted for him in the final round of voting.&nbsp;

McCarthy’s historic ouster and with Emmer recently abandoning his bid to run for speaker, the House has once again been plunged into chaos, not to mention the GOP infighting that has paralysed Congress for over three weeks now.&nbsp;

“The dysfunction in the Republican Party right now seems to be saying we want to lose,” Kentucky Republican Andy Barr told CNN. He added, “That is crazy to me. We were elected as a majority to govern, and we are not doing that right now.”&nbsp;

Emmer, who is said to be a more moderate Republican representative, was also among those who voted to certify Democratic President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory over Trump&nbsp;following the January 6 attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters.

“Extreme MAGA Republicans have broken the Congress,” said top House Democrat Hakeem Jeffries, on social media referring to the former president’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. “The American people are paying the price. We must pursue a bipartisan path forward and reopen the House.”&nbsp;

Republicans hold a narrow 221-212 majority in the House which means that a candidate can afford to lose just four votes if Democrats remain united in opposition, which they have been during previous rounds of voting.&nbsp;

However, Dems have said that they are open to a compromise candidate if it allows the chamber to function.&nbsp;

<h2>What now?</h2>

The Republicans have now regrouped and said that they plan on holding an evening forum to hear from more hopefuls.&nbsp;

Representative Kevin Hern is one of about six representatives who have expressed interest again after he dropped his bid late Tuesday to back Mike Johnson, both of whom lost to Emmer in the closed-door party vote.&nbsp;

Representatives Byron Donalds, Chuck Fleischmann, Mark Green and Roger Williams have also put their names forward.&nbsp;

“We’ve got to go back and get another slate of nominees and let them work through the process and see who our next nominee will be, just like we did last night and today,” said Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer.

According to a statement released by the White House, both Biden and the Saudi crown prince agreed to pursue broader diplomatic efforts “to maintain stability across the region and prevent the conflict from expanding.”

This comes as several Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, have expressed concerns about the conflict expanding and how it would affect their national security.&nbsp;

They also welcomed the delivery of humanitarian assistance from Egypt into Gaza and acknowledged that “much more is needed for civilians” to have sustained access to food, water and medical assistance, as per the White House.&nbsp;

This comes as the United Nations reported that no aid entered Gaza on Tuesday (Oct 24).

The UN aid spokesperson Eri Kaneko said around 20 trucks were unable to transport aid to Palestinian civilians without saying why the trucks had not been able to cross into Gaza via the Rafah border crossing.&nbsp;

The officials stated that the Americans living in Israel and neighbouring Lebanon were of distinct concern, further underlining that the mass evacuation was a 'worst-case scenario' and that the government is churning out possible solutions to the problem that are seen as more likely.

However, one of the officials said, it “would be irresponsible not to have a plan for everything.”

The Israeli defence forces, which have been backed by US military aid, have been prepping for the much-anticipated ground offensive against Hamas militants who took the world by surprise after they carried out an unprecedented attack against Israel from Gaza on Oct 7.

There are a total of more than 40 US states which are suing Meta but 33 of them have filed their complaint in a federal lawsuit as opposed to others which have sought to fight their case in local courts.&nbsp;

“In seeking to maximize its financial gains, Meta has repeatedly misled the public about the substantial dangers of its Social Media Platforms,” said the joint lawsuit filed by more than 30 states, including California and Illinois in the city of Oakland.&nbsp;

It added, “Meta has harnessed powerful and unprecedented technologies to entice, engage, and ultimately ensnare youth and teens.”&nbsp;

The lawsuit argues that Meta has exploited young users by creating a business model designed to make them spend as much time as possible on the platform despite harm to their health.&nbsp;

It also accused Meta of knowingly inducing addictive and compulsive social media use despite knowing that teenage brains are susceptible to the need for approval in the form of “likes” from other users about their content.&nbsp;

“Meta did not disclose that its algorithms were designed to capitalize on young users’ dopamine responses and create an addictive cycle of engagement,” said the complaint.&nbsp;

The lawsuit also alleges Meta has violated a law banning the collection of data about children under the age of 13.&nbsp;

“Kids and teenagers are suffering from record levels of poor mental health and social media companies like Meta are to blame,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James in a statement announcing the suit.&nbsp;

The suit has sought a variety of remedies, including substantial civil penalties. According to James, it also urges the federal court to order Meta to stop manipulative tactics.&nbsp;

"I pulled both emergency shut-off handles because I thought I was dreaming and I just want to wake up," he told the police, as per a criminal complaint.

Emerson had lunged for the emergency shut-off handles that would've turned off the aeroplane engine fuel supplies, effectively turning it into a glider.

Emerson, who eventually had to be restrained by the cabin crew during an emergency landing, told the police he had not slept in 40 hours.&nbsp;

He had a conversation with the investigating officer "about the use of psychedelic mushrooms, and Emerson said it was his first time taking mushrooms."

As per the US Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon, Emerson now faces a federal charge for interfering with flight crew members and attendants.&nbsp;

Along with this, he has also been charged with 83 counts each of attempted murder, and reckless endangerment, along with one count of endangering an aircraft. US Media reports show that he has pleaded not guilty.

<h2>Why was he in the cockpit?</h2>

Emerson was sitting in the jump seat of the plane's cockpit, in line with airline policy for non-working staff.

As per AFP, a short way into the journey from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco, the off-duty pilot chatted with the pilots before attempting "to grab and pull two red fire handles that would have activated the plane's emergency fire suppression system and cut off fuel to its engines."

"After a brief physical struggle with the pilots, Emerson exited the cockpit," said the Department of Justice.

Reacting quickly, the pilots reversed the handles, said Alaska Airlines in a statement, adding that the aircraft had landed safely.

"Flight attendants placed Emerson in wrist restraints and seated him in the rear of the aircraft," the Department of Justice said.&nbsp;

"During the flight's descent, Emerson tried to grab the handle of an emergency exit. A flight attendant stopped him by placing her hands on top of his."

Reports are coming in that US aircraft carriers in the West Asian region are being targetted in drone attacks by Iran proxies. While so far it has managed to thwart these attacks, there's increasing worry that a major attack could drag the US further into the Israel-Hamas war, the same way the Pearl Harbour attack led America to join World War II.

Brigadier General Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon spokesman, told reporters on Oct 19 that USS Carney, a navy destroyer deployed to West Asia (Middle East) was targeted by drones and missiles in the northern Red Sea.

“We cannot say for certain what these missiles and drones were targeting, but they were launched from Yemen heading north along the Red Sea, potentially towards targets in Israel,” Ryder said, adding that he wasn’t sure whether the attacks targeted the US Navy ship.

He blamed the pro-Iranian Houthi rebels in Yemen for launching a flurry of missiles and drones.&nbsp;However, this was not an isolated incident.

<h2>US military under attack in Middle East</h2>

Over the past week, American troops stationed in other parts of the Middle East—Iraq and Syria—have come under attacks. &nbsp;There are about 2,500 US troops in Iraq.

Ain al-Asad airbase, which hosts US and other international forces in western&nbsp;Iraq, was targeted by drones and missiles on October 19 evening. Multiple blasts were reportedly heard inside the base.

The attack came after rockets hit another military base hosting US forces near Baghdad’s international airport on Thursday, Iraqi police said.

A day before on Wednesday, US forces in Iraq were targeted in two separate drone attacks, with one causing minor injuries to a small number of troops even though the US military managed to intercept the armed drone.

At the same time, a drone hit US forces in&nbsp;Syria, resulting in minor injuries, while another one was brought down.

The spate of attacks on US military in the Middle East comes amidst the&nbsp;<a name="_Hlk149076403">Israel-Hamas war </a>that has divided the Western nations and the Gulf.
