The location was also where the police found his abandoned vehicle shortly after the shooting spree on Wednesday night. “He is dead,” Mills told reporters during a press conference, thanking the hundreds of officers from various agencies involved in the search.

She added, “Like many people, I am breathing a sigh of relief tonight, knowing that Robert Card is no longer a threat to anyone...Now is the time to heal.” Mills also said that she has informed President Joe Biden and the state’s lawmakers of the news.

The confirmation by the state’s governor came after multiple reports citing unnamed law enforcement sources, said Card was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

<h2>Days-long manhunt</h2>

The mass shooting in Maine had prompted an extensive 48-hour manhunt which involved hundreds of officers from an array of law enforcement agencies from across the US ranging from local police and sheriff’s deputies to the FBI and the United States Coast Guard.

As of early Friday, authorities said they were chasing down more than 530 tips and leads on Card’s possible whereabouts and even deployed personnel along the Androscoggin River in nearby Lisbon where divers used sonar to look for evidence – or a body.&nbsp;

Officials had also lifted the shelter-in-place order for the area around Lewiston that had shuttered schools and businesses keeping tens of thousands of people in their homes since the suspect was still at large.&nbsp;

<h2>All 18 victims identified</h2>

The law enforcement officers also identified all 18 people, on&nbsp;Friday, who were killed after the 40-year-old had allegedly attacked a restaurant and bowling alley.&nbsp;

The victims included a husband and wife in their 70s, a 14-year-old boy killed alongside his father, a volunteer bowling coach and a manager at the bar, which the suspect is reported to have visited before.

Card is said to have killed seven people at Just-In-Time Recreation and another eight people at Schemengees Bar and Grille.

<h2>Attacks on US troops on the rise&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

There has been a rise in attacks on the US as well as its coalition troops in Iraq and Syria. They were attacked as many as 19 times in Iraq and Syria by Iran-backed forces last week, reported Reuters.&nbsp;The attacks inflicted minor injuries on 21 US forces, including the majority who suffered traumatic brain injuries.

The Chinese pilot “flew in an unsafe and unprofessional manner, demonstrated poor airmanship by closing with uncontrolled excessive speed, flying below, in front of, and within 10 feet of the B-52, putting both aircraft in danger of collision,” said the US officials&nbsp;in a statement.&nbsp;

It added, “We are concerned this pilot was unaware of how close he came to causing a collision.”&nbsp;

<h2>Rise in attacks</h2>

The latest attack, Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder told journalists, took place in the autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq on Thursday. However, “no casualties” were reported and “some minor damage to infrastructure.”&nbsp;

Since October 17, “US and coalition forces have been attacked at least 12 separate times in Iraq (and) four separate times in Syria,” said Ryder, referring to the international coalition against the Islamic State.&nbsp;

When asked who is behind the attacks, he said, “We know that these are Iranian-backed militia groups that are supported by Iran and of course, we hold Iran responsible for these groups.”&nbsp;

In the first post on X, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst said that an “active shooter” was reported on the JBMDL premises in building 5231 and that all personnel were to lock down until further notice while those outside were asked to “take cover”.&nbsp;

However, less than an hour later, the airbase in an update said that they were no longer under a lockdown and confirmed that all JBMDL members were safe.&nbsp;

“We appreciate the public’s continued support,” the post added.&nbsp;

“The Biden administration calls on Congress to meet its commitment to the people of Ukraine by passing additional funding to ensure Ukraine continues to have what it needs to defend itself against Russia's brutal war of choice,” said the Pentagon, in a statement.&nbsp;

This comes as hardline Republicans have put future assistance for Kyiv in doubt and the government is relying on previously approved aid.&nbsp;

The unexpected sales growth defied economists' forecasts, which had predicted a rate of 680,000 units.

New home sales represent a leading indicator for the housing market as they are counted at the signing of a contract. These figures revealed a 33.9 per cent year-on-year acceleration in September.

The new construction market is benefiting from the shortage of existing homes, with builders striving to maintain the momentum. Notably, the National Association of Home Builders reported a 10-month high in builders reducing home prices in October, with an average price discount of 6 per cent. These tactics are making homeownership more achievable and stimulating activity in the market.

As of the end of September, there were 435,000 new homes on the market, up from 432,000 in August. It would take 6.9 months, as opposed to 7.7 months in August, to sell all the houses on the market at the sales pace in September.

Economists anticipate that the housing market may have stabilised in the third quarter, thanks to strong homebuilding and new home sales, with residential investment likely rebounding after nine consecutive quarters of contraction.

Antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents including violent assaults and online harassment have spiked in the U.S. since the Israel-Hamas conflict erupted on October 7, two advocacy groups said Wednesday.

The United States is witnessing the most substantial economic expansion in nearly two years, fuelled by a resilient job market, increasing wealth, and easing inflation. Gross domestic product (GDP) is anticipated to have surged at an annual rate of 4.5 per cent in the third quarter, more than doubling the pace of the prior period, Bloomberg reported. This news comes as a surprise, particularly due to the Federal Reserve's expectations of a slowing consumer demand.

Bloomberg quoted Elie Maalouf, CEO of InterContinental Hotels Group, as saying, "The US consumer has been surprising most predictions, including the Federal Reserve predictions, which is almost looking for the US consumer to soften, and yet they don't."

For President Joe Biden, this economic boom is welcome news, demonstrating the success of his economic policies. However, it also presents a dilemma for the Federal Reserve. Since March 2022, the central bank has been aggressively raising interest rates to combat inflation while avoiding a recession. While inflation has eased with improvements in global supply chains and a decrease in disruptions due to the war in Ukraine, domestic demand in the US remains strong, defying the Fed's efforts.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has indicated that policymakers are likely to maintain interest rates at their current levels during the upcoming meeting. Still, the door is open to future increases if strong growth continues. According to Bloomberg, JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. chief economist Bruce Kasman remarked, "He may not have a lot of patience if the growth numbers don't cool pretty quickly here."

There are factors that may not repeat in the final quarter of 2023, such as a projected decline in imports and a rise in inventories. Additionally, an upswing in mortgage rates and other headwinds could dampen the economy's performance in the near future. As Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, pointed out, growth may slow to around 1 per cent this quarter, after a strong performance of 3.8 per cent in the third. A more stable unemployment rate would be favourable for the Federal Reserve.
