During his recent remarks, the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for the expansion of the country’s war deterrence capabilities in a “more practical and offensive” way, reported the state media, on Tuesday (April 11). This was said in the context of what Kim has called “frantic” aggression by the United States and South Korea.

The report by Pyongyang’s state media Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), said that these remarks were made on Monday when Kim attended a meeting of the Central Military Commission to discuss ways to “cope with the escalating moves of the US imperialists and the South Korean puppet traitors to unleash a war of aggression.”

This also comes as North Korea has tested a record number of missiles and weapons, since the beginning of this year, including the recently tested nuclear-capable underwater drones, claimed the state media. Meanwhile, the US and South Korea have been conducting military drills more frequently, which led North Korea, days earlier, to accuse Washington of escalating the tensions in the Korean Peninsula to the brink of nuclear war.

During his remarks, on Monday, Kim also ordered that the country’s deterrence capabilities be strengthened with “increasing speed” and in a “more practical and offensive” manner, reported the KCNA. It added, that the meeting also discusses “practical matters and measures for machinery to prepare various military action proposals that no means and ways of counteraction are available to the enemy.”

North Korea cuts communication with South Korea amid drills with US

The South Korean Unification Ministry said on Monday that North Korea has not responded to their regularly held calls, the fourth straight day, on the inter-Korean liaison communications channel. The calls in question usually take place between 9:00 am (local time) and 5:00 pm (local time).

In a news-briefing spokesman Koo Byoung-sam told reporters that Seoul is “weighing the possibility of a unilateral cut-off” by Pyongyang, adding that this is the first time since October 2021 that all inter-Korean military lines or liaison calls have stopped for more than a day, reported Bloomberg.

The communication lines were first opened in 2018 when the two countries set up hotlines after a series of summits aimed at decreasing tensions in the region, however, this is reportedly not the first time that North Korea has shut the communications links in displays of anger. The line was restored in July 2021 following North Korea’s shutdown for nearly a year over South Korean activists sending leaflets critical of Kim’s regime across the border by balloon, as per Bloomberg.

One of the two recently ousted Democratic party lawmakers, Justin Jones, in Tennessee, United States has been reappointed to fill his vacant seat on an interim basis, on Monday (April 10) after a vote. The two young Black lawmakers were expelled, while the third Democrat, Gloria Johnson avoided expulsion by a single vote, last week after they staged a rule-breaking demonstration for gun control on the Republican-controlled statehouse floor.

Nashville city council votes to recently ousted lawmaker

The Metropolitan Council of Nashville and Davidson County held a vote to reinstate Jones, who on Thursday had become the first state representative ever to be expelled from the statehouse for violating the chamber’s rules on decorum without an investigation or accusations of serious misconduct. The vote which was held during a special session of the council saw unanimous support with a 36-0.

Addressing the state House of Representatives, on Monday, after being reinstated, Jones said, “I want to welcome the people back to the people’s house. I want to welcome democracy back to the people’s house.” Jones, who had been elected to Tennessee’s House of Representatives last year, has been appointed again as the interim representative.

Previously, both Nashville lawmaker Jones and Memphis lawmaker Justin Pearson, his Black Democratic colleague who was also expelled, had vowed to return to the statehouse. Memphis Board of Commissioners is expected to vote on Wednesday which would decide if Pearson would be allowed to temporarily regain his seat. Meanwhile, the duo has said that they will also contest in special elections in the coming months to permanently fill the seats.

Nashville city council votes to recently ousted lawmaker The Metropolitan Council of Nashville and Davidson County held a vote to reinstate Jones, who on Thursday had become the first state representative ever to be expelled from the statehouse for violating the chamber’s rules on decorum without an investigation or accusations of serious misconduct. Following a grim warning that its future is looking fuzzy, Tupperware's stock plunged by close to 50 per cent on Monday (April 10).

The container manufacturer said there is "substantial doubt" about the company's capacity to continue as a going concern in a regulatory filing late Friday and that it is working with financial advisers to find financing to stay afloat.

Tupperware claimed that if it doesn't obtain extra funding, company won't have enough cash to support its operations. According to the corporation, it is looking into possible layoffs and assessing its real estate holdings for potential cost-saving measures.

The New York Stock Exchange also issued a warning that Tupperware's stock may be delisted for failing to submit the necessary annual report, reported CNN.

“Tupperware has embarked on a journey to turn around our operations and today marks a critical step in addressing our capital and liquidity position,” CEO Miguel Fernandez said in a press release. “The company is doing everything in its power to mitigate the impacts of recent events, and we are taking immediate action to seek additional financing and address our financial position.”

The 77-year-old company has had difficulty staying competitive with rivals in recent years. With newer and trendier products, it has been attempting to shed its stuffy reputation and draw in new customers. It also reached a sales agreement with Target last year.

Neil Saunders, retail analyst and managing director at GlobalData Retail who spoke to CNN, claims that Tupperware is suffering from a "sharp decline in the number of sellers, a consumer pullback on home products, and a brand that still does not fully connect with younger consumers."

“The company used to be a hotbed of innovation with problem-solving kitchen gadgets, but it has really lost its edge,” he said.

The move into Target, according to Tupperware (TUP), is a part of the brand's reinvention, which also includes efforts to expand through various retail channels and expose its products to younger consumers who have never even heard of Tupperware (TUP) parties.

However, that hasn't worked out so far because shares have fallen 90 per cent in the last year. In November, it again issued a "going concern" alert.

A grand jury in the US state of Virginia indicted the mother of a six-year-old boy, on Monday (April 10) after he shot his teacher, earlier this year. The incident took place, in January when a boy shot his elementary school teacher in the city of Newport News, United States. After months, his mother, Deja Taylor has been charged with child neglect and one count of a firearm-related offence, said the office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney.

This also comes a month after Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney Howard Gwynn had said that the child will not be criminally charged. Meanwhile, his 25-year-old mother was indicted by a grand jury and was charged with felony child neglect and a misdemeanour charge of endangering a child by reckless storage of a firearm, said Gwynn, in a statement.

Taylor’s son had shot Abigail Zwerner, a 25-year-old teacher, who earlier this month also filed a $40 million negligence lawsuit against the school authorities following the incident at Richneck Elementary School. Zwerner who was shot on January 6 was later taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to her hand and chest, as per media reports citing officials.

According to the statement, the indictment, on Monday, comes after a “thorough investigation” from the police and the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office. “Every criminal case is unique in its facts, and these facts support these charges, but our investigation into the shooting continues,” said Gwynn. The prosecutor has also said that the grand jury would continue to investigate and consider if additional charges are warranted in this case.

Meanwhile, one of the attorneys for the family, James Ellenson in a statement said that Taylor “will be turning herself in later this week,” reported CNN. He also reportedly declined to further comment on the indictment.

Last week, Ellenson also said that the allegations in the lawsuit against the child and the family “should be taken with a large grain of salt.” He added, “We of course continue to pray for Ms. Zwerner’s complete recovery.” This came after the 25-year-old teacher had filed the lawsuit which sought $40 million in compensatory damages. She alleged that the school staff and officials were aware of the student’s “history of random violence.”

The lawsuit also accuses the then-assistant principal of overlooking the concerns raised by several teachers and staff members which also included warnings over the six-year-old’s possible possession of a firearm and did not act proactively. Diane Toscano, an attorney for Zwerner, reacting to the indictment said there were “failures in accountability at multiple levels” that led to the shooting.

“Today’s announcement addresses but one of those failures,” said Toscano, in a statement. Notably, the six-year-old, during the first half of the school year, was required to be accompanied by a parent “because of his violent tendencies,” as per media reports citing court documents. However, on the day that the incident occurred, the school had allowed him to remain “unaccompanied without a one-on-one companion”.

Two New Orleans high school students Calcea Johnson and Ne’Kiya Jackson claim to have used trigonometry to demonstrate Pythagoras' theorem, something which scholars have believed to be impossible for 2000 years.

Pythagoras' theorem is a fundamental theorem in mathematics that relates to the sides of a right triangle. The theorem states that in a right triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse, the side opposite the right angle, is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides, the legs.

Logical fallacy, also known as circular reasoning, is the term used when someone tries to prove an idea with the idea itself. When this occurs, the end of an argument comes back to the beginning without proving itself.
