For Donald Trump, the first step after his criminal indictment on Thursday (March 30) is to surrender. The former US president was indicted in a case that centers on a $130,000 hush money payout to the adult film star Stormy Daniels in violation of a campaign financing law. He is expected to turn himself in voluntarily for an arraignment on Tuesday (Apr. 4).

The US and 10 other nations issued the first-ever significant anti-spyware declaration on Thursday (March 30).&nbsp;US President Joe Biden issued an executive order on Wednesday (March 29), prohibiting the US federal government from using spyware.&nbsp;

Despite the fact that neither announcement singled out Israel, the NSO Group was frequently brought up in a media briefing by a senior US administration official, and a recent US think tank report asserted that Israeli spyware (comprising several groups) has dominated the vast majority of the world spyware market, reported the Jerusalem Post.&nbsp;

The Jerusalem Post has discovered that several of the organisations on the list still employ commercial Israeli spyware, and their stance on what constitutes misuse of spyware and what it means to utilise spyware lawfully may be more complex.&nbsp;

Due to the fact that many countries' intelligence and law enforcement agencies require such tools to combat terrorism, organised crime, and drug lords, nations had&nbsp;been unwilling to take a firm stance against spyware up until now.&nbsp;

As a result of NSO and other Israeli companies being included in the US Commerce Department's "blacklist" in late 2021, Israel's cyberattack industry has already suffered significant setbacks. This latest announcement may signal the beginning of a new, more severe crackdown on spyware.

The statement said Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, France, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the&nbsp;United Kingdom&nbsp;and the United States all “recognise the threat posed by the misuse of commercial spyware and the need for strict domestic and international controls on the proliferation and use of such technology.”

Too often, such powerful and invasive tools have been used to target and intimidate perceived opponents and facilitate efforts to curb dissent; limit freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly, or association; enable human rights violations and abuses or suppression of civil liberties; or track or target individuals without proper legal authorisation, safeguards, or oversight,” it added.&nbsp;

In addition, the declaration said the nations would take concrete steps to push back on spyware’s marketability by “working within our respective systems to establish robust guardrails and procedures to ensure that any commercial spyware use by our governments is consistent with respect for universal human rights, the rule of law, and civil rights and civil liberties.”

School shooting in the US city of Nashville, Tennessee laid bare how blatantly the gun laws are being flouted in the country. An armed 28-year-old fatally shot three children and three adult staffers at Nashville school. Though the identified shooter, Audrey Hale, was gunned down by police but the burning question lingers on. How long is this to continue? Here's what the data says:&nbsp;&nbsp;

Only three months into 2023 and gun violence in United States already showed its ugly face to the world. In 2023 alone, the statistics suggest about 9,870 people have been killed in US gun shootings as of 27 March, 2023.&nbsp;

If one ponders this is an average death of over 114 individuals per day. But the statistics only indicates how grave the situation is in US. Not only adults but even the children have also fallen victim to the gun violence.&nbsp;

The data crunching done by the Gun Violence Archive shows that these are not just gun murders but also includes a record number of gun suicides. The data shows that amoung 9,870 people who have been killed so far, the majority 57.9% died by suicide. This is an average of about 67 deaths by suicide per day in 2023.

Furthermore, as per reports, 338 of these people were teens and 60 were children.&nbsp;

Gun-related deaths tracked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are divided in many types including those that were unintentional, those that involved law enforcement and those whose circumstances could not be determined.&nbsp;

The findings into the US gun deaths also reveal that 322 people were killed in officer-involved shootings whereas there have been 344 "unintentional" shootings.&nbsp;

A closer look into the data suggests that a total of 129 mass shootings have taken place in 2023 so far. This is by the definition of mass shooting by by the Archive which says that it involves as an incident in which four or more victims are shot or killed.&nbsp;

These mass shootings have led to 193 deaths and 493 injuries so far this year.

Many public places have come under fire by gun violence. Even as every life is important, shooting incidents at schools lately have evoked great emotions in the country. Mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on 24 May last year drew everyone's attention on US as it resulted in the killing of 19 students along with two teachers.&nbsp;

The gunman Salvador Ramos who used AR-15-style rifle for the shooting was killed by the police. But the Uvalde tragedy left scars that cut deep as the family of the children mourn the deaths of their kin. After the tragedy, thousands carried out rallies calling for stricter gun legislation in the country.&nbsp;

Three months into 2023 and 9,800 killed in gun violence in US

As the thunder roared outside and the lights inside Chuck's Dairy Bar began to blink, owner Tracy Harden realized the tornado conditions forecasted for her small Mississippi town Friday night were far more severe than she realized.

"Cooler!" yelled out Harden, and she, her husband and their employees scrambled into a giant gray metal box -- normally used to keep the restaurant's food refrigerated, but which that night saved nine lives in the shattered small town of Rolling Fork.

The tornado cut a trail of havoc more than 100 miles (160 kilometres) long across the southern US state, leaving 25 people dead and devastating damage in its wake.

As evening approached, it had been a little windy and rainy, Harden recounted, surveying the land where her business used to sit.

But the weather warning sirens hadn't sounded, so "we really just didn't worry about this much at all," she told AFP.

Barbara Nell McReynolds-Pinkins -- the cook at Chuck's, affectionately known as Miss P -- had just finished preparing an order of hamburger steak with fries and a salad when everything seemed to change.

"It was so scary," the 52-year-old said, still trembling as she remembered the howling wind, flashes of lightening and pouring rain.

As the storm intensified, 48-year-old Harden said relatives began sending her messages, warning of an especially violent tornado headed her way.

"The lights flickered, and I screamed 'Cooler!'," Harden said. But before her husband was even able to reach the refrigerator's door handle, the whole place was plunged into darkness.

<h2>Ferocious wind</h2>

Harden's husband began to shove everyone inside the giant container.

"And I was calling everybody's name to make sure we had everyone as they were coming to me," Harden said, unable to contain her emotion as she remembered the scene.

The wind was so strong her husband almost lost his grip on the door, which they had to keep closed tight enough to protect them from the storm, but not so tight the group would get locked inside.

Then, "He said, 'I see the sky,'" Harden recalled. "That meant that our roof was gone."

For a long while -- Harden and McReynolds-Pinkins could not estimate how long -- the nine stayed huddled together inside the cooler, bumping up against the metal shelves stocked with milk and meat products.

The ferocious winds -- up to 200 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service -- buffeted and battered the cooler, the nine restaurant workers still inside.

"We're screaming and crying and praying, and then all of a sudden it just stops," Harden said.

But when her husband tried to open the door, it seemed stuck. They called 911 and started to scream, hoping someone would hear them.

That's when the customer who had ordered Miss P's steak came back.

<h2>'God saved us'</h2>

The customer, who had broken his arm as the tornado raged overhead, "somehow cleared the debris from at the door," Harden said. "He got it open, and he got us all out."

The group was rescued, but the world outside the cooler was destroyed.

Buildings were smashed, some totally flattened. Two motels next door, also owned by Harden and her husband, were gone.

"God saved us" through Tracy Harden, according to McReynolds-Pinkins.

"I've always heard if you're in a restaurant and there's a cooler, get in the cooler, and that just came to my mind," Harden said, tears streaming down her cheeks as she explained how she knew where to take shelter.

For Harden, it's still too soon to think about insurance or plans for rebuilding -- right now, that is "the least of our worries," she said, more focused on the human impact of this disaster.

But "we will be back," she promised, in the same spot as before.

And what of the now dented cooler?

"We're gonna bronze it. We're gonna make it beautiful!" she said, laughing.

"It saved our lives!"

Following the harsh questioning of the CEO of the social media platform by Washington legislators on Friday, a ban on Chinese-owned TikTok in the United States appears to be an increasingly likely possibility. Shou Zi Chew, the CEO of TikTok, was subjected to a barrage of inquiries from US lawmakers who made it clear that they believed the app, which is the most popular social media platform in the country and is best known for sharing jokes and dance videos, posed a threat to both mental health and national security.
