President Joe Biden has since directed the Department of Defense to brace for additional similar attacks and respond appropriately, said White House spokesman John Kirby. He also said that the US has sent a “few” military advisors to Israel.

<h2>Attacks on US military bases</h2>

Kirby said there had been an uptick in such attacks over the last week, particularly over the last few days and that the US would not&nbsp;allow its interests in the region to “go unchallenged.”&nbsp;

Washington also raised concerns about an escalation of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. However, the US has rejected calls for a ceasefire saying its ally Israel has a right to self-defence.&nbsp;

“Iran continues to support Hamas and Hezbollah, and we know that Iran is closely monitoring these events and, in some cases, actively facilitating these attacks and spurring on others who may want to exploit the conflict for their own good or for that of Iran,” said Kirby.&nbsp;

He added, “We know Iran’s goal is to maintain some level of deniability here, but we’re not going to allow them to do that.” This comes as there has been an increase in attacks on US forces in the region, particularly since Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7.&nbsp;

Earlier this week, at least five rocket and drone attacks targeted three Iraqi military bases where&nbsp;American troops are stationed as part of the international coalition set up to fight the Islamic State group.

On Monday (Oct 23), Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iranian-backed militias, said that its forces used two drones to attack US military bases in Deir el-Zour province and in al-Shaddadi further north.&nbsp;

This was after the group also said that it attacked the al-Tanf garrison near the Jordanian and Iraqi borders which is near the desert Rukban camp home to tens of thousands of Syrians.

“We are deeply concerned about the potential for any significant escalation of these attacks in the days ahead,” said the White House spokesperson.&nbsp;

<h2>US sends ‘few’ military advisors to Israel</h2>

Kirby said that the US has also sent a “few” military advisors to Israel, adding that these officers have experience in “the sorts of operations that Israel is conducting, and may conduct in the future” and were “over there to share some perspectives.”&nbsp;

A report by the Associated Press said that the Pentagon has sent military advisers to Israel to help with war planning ahead of their potential ground operation in Gaza.&nbsp;

Among those is Marine Corps Lt. Gen. James Glynn, who has previously helped lead special operations forces against the Islamic State and served in Fallujah, Iraq, during some of the most heated urban combat there, a US official told AP.&nbsp;

White House says Iran ‘actively facilitating’ attacks on US military bases

China’s top diplomat Wang Yi will travel to Washington later this week, officials in the United States announced on Monday (Oct 23). A senior US official who briefed reporters on the trip on customary condition of anonymity said that Washington’s top priority has been to ensure the intense competition between the world’s two largest economies and their disagreements over a host of issues do not veer into conflict, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

“We continue to believe that direct face-to-face diplomacy is the best way to raise challenging issues, address misperception and miscommunication, and explore working with the Chinese where our interests intersect,” said the US official, as quoted by AFP.&nbsp;

The visit also comes as Israel continues to bombard Gaza in retaliation for Palestinian militant group Hamas’ attacks, while Russia’s war in Ukraine grinds on. Washington has repeatedly reiterated support for both Tel Aviv and Kyiv.&nbsp;

The US will also prioritise efforts to re-establish military-to-military ties with China, said the US officials.&nbsp;

Recently, both Beijing and Washington have sought diplomatic advantage against each other over the ongoing violence in the Middle East. During his multi-nation visit to the region, Blinken spoke to Wang asking Beijing to exert pressure on Iran, which supposedly backs Hamas.&nbsp;

The 69-year-old senator said “not guilty” when asked to plead his case before Judge Sidney Stein at federal court in lower Manhattan.&nbsp;

This comes after federal prosecutors accused Menendez of conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government – Egypt – to which he again pleaded not guilty, said a spokesman for the US attorney’s office in Manhattan.&nbsp;

The new charge comes as Menendez, along with his wife and three other people, was indicted on charges of taking bribes and influence peddling to benefit Egypt, to which they had already pleaded not guilty last month.&nbsp;

During the 2016 race after Trump had signed up on the first day of the filing period, he sent Vice President Mike Pence to file his paperwork for the 2020 contest in line with the tradition of other incumbents who asked their surrogates to finish the paperwork.&nbsp;

“Vote for Trump and solve your problems,” he wrote on the commemorative poster at the statehouse in the city of&nbsp;Concord that all the candidates are asked to sign, as per the Associated Press.

According to the AP, candidates this year have until October 27 to officially sign up and dozens of White House hopefuls are expected to do so in the upcoming days.&nbsp;

Notably, while Trump had won both the 2016 and 2020 Republican primaries in New Hampshire, he lost the state in both general elections.

US presidential election: Trump files for New Hampshire primary ahead of campaign rally

United States President Joe Biden, on Monday (Oct 23) said that any discussions about a ceasefire in Gaza can only take place if the Palestinian militant group Hamas releases all hostages taken from Israel after its October 7 attack. Washington has also rejected proposals of a “humanitarian pause” to let aid into the besieged Gaza.&nbsp;

<h2>Potential ‘hostages-for-ceasefire’ deal?</h2>

During an event at the White House when asked if he would support a “hostages-for-ceasefire” deal, the US president said, “We should have those hostages released and then we can talk.”

Subsequently, he apologised for having to leave the event to promote his economic programme ahead of the US presidential election next year and said he had to go to the White House situation room for “another issue I have to deal with.”

Notably, the US president’s departure came after the Palestinian militant group said they had freed two more female hostages abducted from Israel.&nbsp;

This comes days after an American mother and daughter duo Judith and Natalie Raanan were freed. Israel, earlier on Monday, increased the number of those abducted to 222.&nbsp;

<h2>Biden’s call with the pope</h2>

During the event, Biden said that he discussed the ongoing war with Pope Francis on Sunday. “The pope and I are on the same page, he was very very, very interested in what we were doing,” said the US president, as quoted by news agency AFP.&nbsp;

Biden said he had “laid out to him what the game plan was” regarding US support for Israel, adding that “The pope was across the board supportive.”&nbsp;

The Vatican earlier said the call, which lasted about 20 minutes, “focused on conflict situations in the world and the need to identify paths to peace.”

<h2>White House rejects calls for ceasefire</h2>

Prior to the US president’s remarks, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters that Washington has rejected calls to pause operations and said that a ceasefire would “give Hamas the ability to rest, to refit and to get ready to continue launching terrorist attacks against Israel.”&nbsp;

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Monday (Oct 23) that he expected the 27-nation bloc’s leaders to call jointly for a “humanitarian pause” to let aid into Gaza given the dire conditions.&nbsp;

According to Alaska Airlines, the parent company of Horizon, pilots reported a “credible security threat related to an off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot who was travelling in the flight deck jump seat.”

“The jump seat occupant unsuccessfully attempted to disrupt the operation of the engines,” said the airline&nbsp;in a statement. It added, “The Horizon Captain and First Officer quickly responded, engine power was not lost and the crew secured the aircraft without incident.”

The crew on Alaska Airlines Flight 2059 reported the incident to air traffic control, where the Horizon Air pilot, as per Live ATC said, “We’ve got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit, and he doesn’t sound like he’s causing any issue in the back right now.”

“I think he’s subdued,” the pilot added. “We want law enforcement as soon as we get on the ground and parked.” The incident was also described as a “Level 4” which involves an “attempted or actual breach of the flight deck.”

The flight was scheduled to take off at 5:25 pm (local time) and land in San Francisco at 7:30 pm (local time).&nbsp;

“All passengers on board were able to travel on a later flight,” said Alaska Airlines&nbsp;in a statement, adding that the incident is being investigated by the Port of Portland Police Department and the FBI.&nbsp;
