The Department of Defense told members of Congress at a briefing on Wednesday it planned to lease the Iron Dome systems back to Israel, the U.S. official and the congressional aide told Reuters. In this type of a financial arrangement, the ownership remains with the buyer.

The transfer back to Israel could come within days, the congressional aide said.

It became operational in 2011.

In a new study published in the journal Science, scientists have established links between the impact of climate change on these marine mammals.&nbsp;

Over the past four years, more than 680 grey whales have washed up or been found dead on North America's Pacific shores over the last four years.&nbsp;

The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, which releases data on whale deaths, characterised the recent increase in grey whale strandings as an "unusual mortality event".&nbsp;

The mammal population in the North Pacific has declined from a peak of around 27,000 in 2016 to about 14,500 in 2023.&nbsp;

While revealing what is behind the deaths, Joshua Stuart from Oregon State University's Marine Mammal Institute said in a statement: "These are extreme population swings that we did not expect to see in a large, long-lived species like grey whales." &nbsp;

"When the availability of their prey in the Arctic is low, and the whales cannot reach their feeding areas because of sea ice, the grey whale population experiences rapid and major shocks," added Stuart, who is also the author of the new study.&nbsp;

The latest research suggests that even species like grey whales, which are highly mobile and long-lived, can be sensitive to climate change impacts, such as the melting of the Arctic.&nbsp;

Explaining what was causing these deaths, Stewart told outlet KTVB,&nbsp;"Feels like this time we've got a pretty good 'smoking gun'".&nbsp;

Grey whales spend the summers in the Arctic and migrate more than 12,000 miles every year from their feeding areas to their breeding grounds in the warm, shallow lagoons of Mexico's Baja Peninsula. They spend winters there.&nbsp;

Grey whales in the Arctic eat amphipod crustaceans. Amphipods, in turn, feed on algae that grow on the sea ice's underside.&nbsp;

Stewart said in a release that "with less ice, you get less algae, which is worse for the grey whale prey" and "when there are sudden declines in the quality of prey, the population of grey whales is significantly affected".&nbsp;

The finding of the report means that the melting sea ice disrupts the entire food chain, but Stewart said he does not think there is currently a risk of extinction for grey whales.

Scientists may finally know why dead grey whales are washing up on US Coast

A 53-year-old Black man, who was recently released after serving 16 years in prison on a wrongful conviction, was shot dead by a police officer in Georgia, US.

The incident happened on Monday (Oct 17) around 7:30 am (local time) over a traffic stop when the victim, Leonard Allan Cure, was on his way to visit his mother.

A Georgia sheriff’s deputy pulled Cure along Interstate 95, north of the Florida line.

Police said that Cure was found speeding at more than 90 mph (145 kph), and faced arrest for reckless driving.

As per the officer’s request, Cure got out of his car and he initially "complied with the officer's commands until learning he was under arrest," the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said in a statement.

<h2>Altercation ensued between Cure and cop&nbsp;</h2>

A preliminary probe done by the agency found that an altercation ensued during which Cure was stunned with a Taser.

Cure then retaliated by assaulting the officer, who stunned him again. The deputy then used a baton to try to subdue the 53-year-old before firing his weapon, the GBI said.

The police officer has been put under administrative leave and a probe has been initiated, Larry Bruce, the public information officer for the Camden County Sheriff's Office, said.

The probe agency would also use the video recorded by the deputy’s body camera and patrol car dash camera along with the officer’s statement, said Stacy Carson, the GBI agent leading the shooting investigation, AP news agency reported.

<h2>Case of misunderstanding?</h2>

Seth Miller, executive director of the Innocence Project of Florida who helped Cure get freedom, lamented the death, saying that the officer should have taken into account Cure’s “overarching fear that at any moment the cops are going to come” and “take them back to jail or prison”.

The Department of Defense in the United States said in a Tuesday (Oct 17) report to Congress that more than 270 reports of unidentified anomalous phenomena, known as UAPs or UFOs, were made to the government in a recent eight-month period.&nbsp;

The unclassified report states that there was no evidence that any of the UAPs identified between Aug 30 of last year and Apr 30 of this year originated in space.&nbsp;

While none of the UAP reports have been confirmed to be of foreign origin, the possibility is being probed.&nbsp;

The US-based reports mentioned that the officials said many of the reports by military witnesses "present potential safety of flight concerns, and there are some cases where reported UAP have potentially exhibited one more concerning performance characteristics such as high-speed travel or unusual manoeuvrability".&nbsp;

None of these reports suggest&nbsp;the UAP manoeuvred to an unsafe proximity to civil or military aircraft. However, the report added that the mere presence of UAP in the airspace represents a potential hazard to flight safety.&nbsp;

Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, who is the Pentagon press secretary, said on Wednesday: "The safety of our service personnel, our bases and installations, and the protection of US operations security on land, in the skies, seas, and space are paramount."&nbsp;

"We take reports of incursions into our designated space, land, sea, or airspaces seriously and examine each one," Ryder added.&nbsp;

The agency is also probing 17 sightings that happened between 2019 and 2022 that hadn't been included in earlier reports.&nbsp;

The US has taken the UFO and UAP phenomenon quote seriously, with NASA convening a group of experts in 2022 to review how data about UAPs is collected. The group in September said it found no evidence that UAPs are "extraterrestrial".&nbsp;

In September this year, NASA officially joined the search for UFOs, but reflecting the stigma attached to the field, the US space agency kept secret for hours the identity of the person heading a new programme tracking mystery flying objects.&nbsp;

The official's appointment is the result of a year-long NASA fact-finding report into UAP. "At NASA, it's in our DNA to explore - and to ask why things are the way they are," agency chief Bill Nelson said.
