Authorities in New York and other cities in the United States are preparing for the unprecedented scenario of the possible arrest of former US president Donald Trump. The former leader of the free world has himself said that he might be arrested. The charges? Alleged payment of USD 130,000 to porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016 as hush money to hide an affair with him. On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump has already asked his supporters to protest against his possible arrest. The last time he made such an appeal, hundreds of his supporters had stormed the US Capitol Building on January 6, 2021.

If an indictment is filed against Trump, he would be the first sitting or former US president ever to be charged with a crime. Trump supporters were scheduled to protest in New York later Monday as Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg weighs charging the ex-president

Bragg, an elected Democrat, has not confirmed any plans to indict, but has indicated that prosecutors are nearing a decision by putting key witnesses in front of a grand jury in recent weeks and offering Trump the opportunity to testify.

"They are MANY years beyond the Statute of Limitations which, in this instance, is TWO YEARS. More importantly, THERE WAS NO CRIME!!!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform Monday.

The New York Times reported that on Sunday, more than a dozen senior New York officials met senior safety aides of city mayor Eric Adams to discuss security and contingency plans for any protests.

NBC News said that police and other law enforcement agencies had conducted "preliminary security assessments," including placing a security perimeter around the Manhattan Criminal Court where Trump would likely appear before a judge.

"The NYPD's state of readiness remains a constant at all times, for all contingencies. Our communications and coordination with our partners in government and in law enforcement are fundamental tenets of our commitment to public safety," a police spokesperson told AFP.

Senior Democrats have warned that Trump's calls could trigger a repeat of the violence that his supporters unleashed on the US Capitol in January 2021.

The New York Young Republican Club announced a "peaceful protest" of Bragg's "heinous attack" on Trump for 6:00 pm (2000 GMT) in lower Manhattan Monday but it was unclear how many would turn out.

Trump has blasted the investigation as a "witch hunt," while his vice-president Mike Pence described the probe as a "politically charged prosecution."

US prepares for the unthinkable but possible arrest of a former president

Former President Donald Trump has predicted Tuesday will be the day he is indicted as an investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney's office comes to a close.

Will Trump be indicted and arrested?

Military pilots have high rates of cancer, and for the first time, a Pentagon study has revealed that the ground crews who fuel, maintain, and launch those aircraft are also becoming sick.

Retired military aviators who had been raising concerns about the number of air and ground crew personnel they knew who had cancer for years had long wanted the data. They were informed that past military investigations had found no evidence that they were more at risk than the American population as a whole, as reported by the Associated Press.

The Pentagon found that air crew members had an 87 per cent higher rate of melanoma and a 39 per cent higher rate of thyroid cancer, as well as a 16 per cent higher rate of prostate cancer for men and a 16 per cent higher rate of breast cancer for women, in its year-long study of nearly 900,000 service members who flew or worked on military aircraft between 1992 and 2017. The risk of all cancers was 24 per cent higher overall among flight crews.

The study found that while women had a seven per cent higher breast cancer risk, ground crews had a 19 per cent higher rate of brain and nervous system cancers, a 15 per cent higher rate of thyroid cancer, and a nine per cent higher rate of kidney or renal cancers. The total rate of all cancers increased by three per cent.

Additionally, some good news was reported. Lung cancer rates were much lower among ground and air crews, and air crews also had reduced rates of bladder and colon cancer.

As observed by the Pentagon, the latest study was one of the biggest and most comprehensive studies to date. This study looked across all of the services and at both air and ground troops, in contrast to a prior study that just examined Air Force pilots and discovered some increased rates of cancer.

The research found that when people in the crew were diagnosed with cancer, they had a higher chance of surviving than people in the general population. The research suggested that this was because crew members were more likely to be in better health due to their military fitness requirements and were diagnosed with cancer earlier due to regular required medical checkups.

Former chairman of computer chipmaker conglomerate Tsinghua Unigroup, Zhao Weiguo has been accused of corruption by China’s top anti-graft watchdog. This comes amid reports of key players in Beijing’s semiconductor industry being investigated on graft allegations following the government’s billions of dollars worth of investments into projects that later failed or stalled.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, on Monday (March 20) said that the former executive’s case has been handed to prosecutors who will then file charges against him. The regulators have also alleged that Zhao “took the state-owned company he managed as his private fiefdom.”

The former executive is among some of the prominent names who are facing an investigation as the Chinese leadership is seemingly getting frustrated over their failure to make semiconductors which can replace the United States-developed circuitry. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s government reportedly poured some $100 billion into the industry in a bid to reduce reliance on the West.

According to the regulators, Zhao allegedly passed profitable businesses to his relatives and friends while purchasing goods and services from companies managed by his associates at “prices significantly higher than the market”. Together, the acts caused heavy losses to national interests, said the regulators.

This also comes after reports that he has been under investigation since July. At the time, Zhao served as chairman of the company affiliated with the prestigious Tsinghua University, Xi’s alma mater. The issue of semiconductors has become a point of contention between China and the US after the latter has increasingly placed restrictions on the former to contain Beijing’s technological ambitions.

Zhao’s company is said to have become one of China's leading chipmakers after a series of acquisitions. However, under his leadership, it defaulted on several bond payments some three years ago, reported BBC.

Tsinghua Unigroup also finished restructuring last July which placed it under the control of another group of companies led by state-backed venture capital firms. It was also around that time that Zhao stepped down as the chairman.

Meanwhile, another area of scrutiny for Beijing’s authorities has reportedly been the National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund or Big Fund where the anti-graft agency had previously announced investigations into executives who helped manage the company’s fund, reported Bloomberg.

One student was killed and another injured in a shooting incident that took place outside a school in US state Texas’s city of Dallas, early Monday. The police have arrested the person suspected of opening fire. The incident occurred at Lamar High School in Arlington, said a statement by the local police.

“At around 6:55 this morning, we received multiple reports of shots fired on campus, outside of the school building,” said police spokesperson Tim Ciesco, before many students arrived for the first day back to classes after the spring break.

According to Arlington Independent School District spokeswoman Anita Foster, one student was injured by the gunfire while the other was hurt by what she described as “debris from the shooting”.

Both students are receiving medical care, however, no immediate information was available regarding their condition. Additionally, their identities have also not been revealed yet. The Arlington police, in a series of tweets also said that they believe the suspected shooter did not enter the campus.

“Officers were able to locate and take that individual into custody shortly after arriving on scene,” said the Arlington police, without releasing any other details about the shooter. Subsequently, the police said they have completed their search of the high school and begun releasing the students after placing it on complete lockdown on Monday morning.

Foster had earlier told CNN that the school will remain on lockdown while police investigate. Meanwhile, the parents were asked to stay away from the campus and as of 10:40 am (local time) after the police had completed their search of the school building, students would be released to their guardians at a “reunification center”.

North Korea's state media said on Saturday (March 18) that 800,000 young North Koreans have volunteered and joined the nation's army to fight "US imperialists." The development has come just days after Pynogyang carried out test of its most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile. North Korea has carried out record number of missile tests in last one year.

This has prompted South Korea and the US to ramp up security co-opeartion. This week, both countries have kicked off their largest joint military drills in five years.

North Korea views all such exercises as rehearsals for invasion and has repeatedly warned it would take "overwhelming" action in response.

The official Korean Central News Agency described the ongoing drills as an American attempt "to provoke a nuclear war" and said that in response, hundreds of thousands of people had enlisted.

The young volunteers are determined to "mercilessly wipe out the war maniacs" so they joined the army to "defend the country", KCNA said.

"More than 800,000 youth league officials and students across the country volunteered to join and rejoin the Korean People's Army" on Friday alone, it added.

Images released by Pyongyang's official Rodong Sinmun showed young North Koreans waiting in long lines to sign their names at what looks like a construction site.

The latest report comes after Pyongyang test-fired its largest and most powerful missile, a Hwasong-17, on Thursday -- its second ICBM test this year.

State media has described the launch as a response to the ongoing, "frantic" US-South Korea joint military drills.

On Saturday, KCNA said the ongoing drills were "inching close to the unpardonable red-line".

Last year, North Korea declared itself an "irreversible" nuclear power, and leader Kim Jong Un recently called for an "exponential" increase in weapons production, including tactical nukes.

Kim earlier this month also ordered the North Korean military to intensify drills to prepare for a "real war".

Pyongyang is using the drills to justify their nuclear weapons program domestically as "crucial and necessary," Yang Moo-jin, president of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, told AFP.

This involves "spreading the idea that the South Korea-US military drills ultimately aim to destroy the current North Korean regime and even occupy its capital Pyongyang," Yang added.

A former US marine Corps Daniel Duggan, currently in Australian prison, is facing extradition to United States on charges of breaching a US law by providing training to Chinese military pilots to land on aircraft carriers.

Duggan was held by the Australian police authorities upon his arrival from China, where the ex-Marine was staying since 2014. After a hearing on Duggan's extradition, his lawyer Dennis Miralis in his comments outside the court premises flagged the alleged dubiousness with which the Marine was lured into arriving in Australia from China.

The lawyer shared that firstly Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) cleared the security and aviation licence for the marine as he was setting off to come to Australia from China but as soon as the Marine's plane landed an arrest warrant was issued and his security clearance was also revoked.

The arrest took place in a rural town in New South Wales state in October. However, Duggan's lawyer is now accusing the Australian security agencies of "luring" him into coming to Australia from China.

Presently, Duggan is lodged in a high-security prison in Australia. He renounced his US citizenship and had been living in China since 2014. After China, the Marine Corps is living for a decade and has six children in Australia. Duggan has refuted all accusations against him. "The insinuation that I am some sort of spy is an outrage," he said in the statement.

As per earlier reports, UK's air chief said this month that intelligence agencies in Australia and Britain had shared information to warn pilots against working for Beijing.
