And I don't think US China will really end up bipolar. I think there are too many, as I said, too many next-run powers with sufficient clout and autonomous activity and regions of their own dominance and privacy..."

South Korea held a joint aerial exercise with Japan and the United States on Sunday (October 22) said South Korean military. The air drill has marked first such collaboration between the three countries. The drill was aimed at expanding the countries' response capabilities against threat posed by North Korea, said South Korean air force in a statement.

The drill involved a US B-52 bomber along with fighter jets of the three countries.

The US bomber landed at South Korean airbase on Tuesday following a flyover at country's largest defence exhibition. B-52 bombers fly at sub-sonic speed but can travel more than 8800 miles without any need of refuelling. The bomber can reach an altitude of 50,000 feet.

The South Korean Air Force said that the trilateral exercise took place south of the Korean peninsula where South Korea and Japan's Air Defence Identification Zones overlap.&nbsp;

North Korea considers all such exercises as rehearsals for an invasion against it and repeatedly warns of "overwhelming" action in response.

The study reveals increasing levels of sodium and chloride, indicative of higher salt content in the water. Additionally, the concentration of dissolved solids has been on the rise, potentially indicating broader water contamination.

Hydrologist Bruce Lindsey from the USGS stresses&nbsp;that "dissolved solids, chloride, and sodium had statistically significant increases more frequently than any other constituents." The researchers highlight three significant reasons for concern:

The United States on Friday (October 20) released an intelligence report it said it had sent to more than 100 countries saying that it has found that Russia is trying to undermine democratic elections worldwide. The intelligence report claims that Russia is using social media, spies and its state-run media to erode public faith in the integrity of elections.

"This is a global phenomenon," said the assessment. "Our information indicates that senior Russian government officials, including the Kremlin, see value in this type of influence operation and perceive it to be effective."

Reuters cited an unnamed senior official in the US Department of State who said that Russian attempts to intensify election interference efforts were bolstered by its success in spreading disinformation about&nbsp;US Presidential Elections 2020.

"Success breeds more, and we definitely see the US elections as a catalyst," the official said.

His attempts to overturn the election results were rejected by courts across America, including the US Supreme Court. But he has not budged from his position.

The counter-offensive by Israel has presented&nbsp;an opportunity for both Moscow and Beijing to come up as the champs of the developing world as Washington has fairly and squarely backed its ally Tel Aviv.

Though China has repeatedly called for restraint and a ceasefire, it has also strongly denounced Israel over its bombardment of the besieged Palestinian enclave.

"Israel's actions have gone beyond the scope of self-defence," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said earlier this week, calling on it to stop its "collective punishment" of Gaza residents, Chinese state media reported.

Russia, amid the conflict, has expressed sympathy for the Palestinians while condemning the United States, stating that the upsurge of violence and tensions between Israel and Hamas showed the failure of the United States' Middle-East policy.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also stated that Washington sought to monopolise the international efforts aimed at forging peace in the region, further condemning the US for not seeking compromises acceptable to both sides.

"I think that many people will agree with me that this is a vivid example of the failure of United States policy in the Middle East," Putin had told Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani last week.

"The US tried to monopolise the solution (of the crisis between Israel and Palestinians), but, unfortunately, was not concerned with finding compromises acceptable to both sides, but, on the contrary, promoted its own ideas about how it should be done and put both sides under pressure. That's both sides, at one or another," he said.

Both Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping have strived to strengthen links to the global south, witnessing economic prospects and conceivably a way to negate the diplomatic influence of the United States and its allies. This strategy was on its full display earlier this week as China hosted a summit for Xi's Belt and Road Initiative, which has loaned hundreds of billions of dollars for infrastructure projects across the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia.

Putin attended and met Xi for three hours of talks that included "an in-depth exchange of views on the Palestinian-Israeli situation", China said.

"China and Russia still see (the crisis) more in terms of the United States than in terms of either Palestine or Israel," said Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

"If the United States can effectively rally the world, it's bad for them. If the US and its allies grow increasingly isolated, they see that as good for them."

<h2>China and Russia's support for Palestine</h2>

The way both Moscow and Beijing operate in the Middle East has a lot in common. Russia has been a staunch critic of the United States, however, China has mainly opted to bypass denouncing the US.

This year, China signalled its growing influence in the Middle East when it announced a deal on the restoration of ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

On the other hand, Russia too has been enhancing its relationship with Iran via its move to back Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and supplies of Iranian drones.

Both Moscow and Beijing have strongly voiced support for Palestinians and are critical of what they say is the stigmatisation of them by the United States.&nbsp;

"There's clearly a shared interest in emphasising the negative role of the US in the conflict," news agency Reuters quoted Jean-Loup Samaan, senior research fellow at the Middle East Institute of the National University of Singapore, as saying.

"And that fits within their broader narrative on the need to build an alternative world order to the US."

Earlier, Putin, accusing the West of not taking into consideration the fundamental interests of Palestinians, had stated that it was necessary to "implement the decisions of the UN Security Council on the creation of an independent sovereign Palestinian state."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also echoed the same sentiment saying that the creation of a Palestinian state was the "most reliable" solution for peace in Israel.&nbsp;

"Creation of a Palestinian state that would live side by side with Israel.. is the most reliable path to solve (the conflict). We cannot agree with those who say that security can only be ensured through a fight with terrorism," he said.

Meanwhile, Chinese media covered the Hamas assault and since then has been carrying reports containing images of Palestinians suffering, with some even citing Palestinian sources as saying Israel was responsible for the violence.

"None of the reality that shocked much of the world on October 7 is in Chinese news. Instead, the news features Israeli bombing of Gaza without explaining that the target is only Hamas infrastructure," Reuters quoted Carice Witte, director of the SIGNAL Group, a Sino-Israel relations think tank based in Tel Aviv as saying.

<h2>Accusations against Kurmasheva</h2>

The Russian-American journalist was detained on Wednesday (Oct 18) after she allegedly failed to register as a “foreign agent” during a visit to Russia.&nbsp;

RFE/RL is funded by the US Congress and is designated by Moscow as a “foreign agent”. Moscow’s foreign agent law allows Russian authorities to label organisations and people that receive foreign funding as “foreign agents”.&nbsp;

Notably, the term that carries Cold War connotations of espionage, is not just limited to organisations, and can be applied to&nbsp;journalists, rights activists and even entertainers who can be asked to register with the justice ministry.

If found guilty, Kurmasheva faces up to five years in prison. However, her lawyer Edgar Matevosyan told Reuters that she was pleading not guilty.

Kurmasheva was seen wearing what appeared to be a hooded coat and a mask over her face, while two staff members in balaclavas escorted her into Kazan’s Sovetski court for the hearing on Friday.&nbsp;

<h2>About her case&nbsp;</h2>

Kurmasheva, who holds both American and Russian passports, is an editor with the US Congress-funded outlet’s Tatar-Bashkir service, as per her employer RFE/RL, and lives in Prague, Czech Republic.&nbsp;

The Russian-American journalist had entered Russia on May 20 following a family emergency, according to the Prague-based media outlet. However, while she was waiting for her return flight on June 2, she was temporarily detained at the Kazan airport.&nbsp;

Subsequently, her passports were confiscated, and she was fined for failing to register her US passport, according to RFE/RL. However, when she was waiting for the return of her passports, Kurmasheva was detained again and charged with failing to register as a foreign agent.&nbsp;

“Alsu is a highly respected colleague, devoted wife, and dedicated mother to two children,” RFE/RL acting President Jeffrey Gedmin said in a statement. He added, “She needs to be released so she can return to her family immediately.”&nbsp;

According to the media outlet, Kurmasheva lives in Prague with her husband and children. Gedmin also expressed concerns about the Russian court’s decision on Friday to prolong Kurmasheva’s detention and said “journalism is not a crime.”&nbsp;

Kurmasheva has covered ethnic minorities in Tatarstan and Bashkortostan, said RFE/RFL, especially on efforts to preserve the Tatar language, even as Russian authorities have “exerted increased pressure on Tatars in recent years.”&nbsp;

<h2>RFE/RL operations in Russia</h2>

The RFE/RL has also criticised Russia’s foreign agent law and said that it “amounts to political censorship”.&nbsp;

They allege that the law is “meant to prevent journalists from performing their professional duties” and are challenging officials’ actions against Kurmasheva in Russian courts as well as the European Court of Human Rights.

According to the Prague-based media outlet, over 30 RFE/RL employees have been listed as “foreign agents” by the Russian justice ministry.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, a Moscow court also declared bankruptcy of RFE/RL’s operations in Russia after they refused to pay “multiple fines” which amounted to nearly $14 million (over one billion roubles) for “noncompliance with the law.”&nbsp;

“Alsu was detained simply because she is an employee of Radio Liberty. In fact, now any independent journalist in Russia risks the same thing,” one of Kurmasheva’s colleagues said, on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, as quoted by Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).&nbsp;

However, the local Tatar-Inform news agency has alleged that Kurmasheva’s detention may be linked to the information she received about university teachers being mobilised to fight in Ukraine. The news agency quoted investigators as saying she had been gathering information on other military activities as well.&nbsp;

<h2>Russia and the US respond</h2>

Notably, Kurmasheva’s detention comes seven months after that of Gershkovich. “This appears to be another case of the Russian government harassing U.S. citizens,” State Department spokesperson Matt Miller told reporters on Thursday (Oct 19).&nbsp;

However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has since denied the accusations saying, “There is no campaign in Russia to persecute US citizens. There are US citizens who break the law, and appropriate measures are taken against them.”&nbsp;

<h2>Kurmasheva’s detention sparks criticism</h2>

The Russian-American journalist’s detention has since sparked criticism from various international organisations including the United Nations human rights office which took to social media and said it was “concerned” by Kurmasheva’s arrest.

“Journalists must be left to do their vital work free from pressure, intimidation and reprisals,” said the OHCHR.&nbsp;

The CPJ also released a statement that the organisation is “deeply concerned” about Kurmasheva’s detention and called on the Russian authorities to immediately release her and “drop all charges against her.”

“Journalism is not a crime and Kurmasheva’s detention is yet more proof that Russia is determined to stifle independent reporting,” said Gulnoza Said, CPJ’s Europe and Central Asia program coordinator.&nbsp;

Republicans obstruct Jim Jordan's third bid to become House speaker, 25 vote against him

The United States government has been urging Israel privately to not launch a military offensive against Lebanon's Hezbollah, in an effort to prevent the war from spreading beyond Gaza, The Times of Israel reported on Wednesday citing two officials.

As per the reports, the officials said that the United States recognises that Israel must retaliate against Hezbollah's increased targeting of its northern border since the surprise attack launched by the militant group Hamas on Oct 7 which claimed the lives of more than 1,400 Israelis.

However, the incessant attacks by Hezbollah and how Israeli intelligence failed to predict Hamas' assault have further led to discussions on whether Israel should initiate armed conflict against Hezbollah.

Such talks, as per the officials, have been a concern for the United States as Washington has been publicly and privately warning Hezbollah and Iran to not open a war on Israel's northern front.

The US has urged Israel to be cautious of its military responses to Hezbollah attacks as its response could result in a much larger war.

The officials said that the Biden administration has assured Tel Aviv that if Hezbollah initiates a war against Israel, the US military will join the Israeli Defense Forces in fighting the militant group.

However, following US President Joe Biden's brief solidarity visit to Israel, White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby stated that it “was never said” that the US would join in the event of a front with Hezbollah.

Kirby further added that there was “no intention to put US boots on the ground in combat” but that the US has its “national security interests” and “we’ll protect them if we need to.”

Last week, Hezbollah group warned Israel that it is "fully prepared" to join militant group Hamas in the war when the time is right.

"We, as Hezbollah, are contributing to the confrontation and will (continue) to contribute to it within our vision and plan," Hezbollah deputy chief Naim Qassem told a pro-Palestinian rally in Beirut's southern suburbs.

"We are fully prepared, and when the time comes for action, we will take it," he said.

The official's comments coincided with the Iranian foreign minister's visit to Beirut, rebuffing calls for Hezbollah to stay out of the war.

"The behind-the-scenes calls with us by great powers, Arab countries, envoys of the United Nations, directly and indirectly telling us not to interfere will have no effect," he said, adding, "Hezbollah knows its duties perfectly well."

US privately urging Israel to not launch offensive against Hezbollah: Report

At least 300 people were arrested after demonstrators from two progressive Jewish groups descended on the United States Capitol building in Washington DC, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. This came after the rally in Washington drew thousands of people inside and outside the Capitol building on the day that President Joe Biden was in the midst of a visit to the war-torn nation.&nbsp;

The war is nearing the two-week mark and has led to significant civilian casualties in both Israel and Gaza. More than 1,400 Israelis have been killed since Hamas’ attack on October 7 and thousands of others have been wounded.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, according to the Palestinian health ministry, the death toll in Gaza stood at 3,785 as of Thursday (Oct 19), with around 12,493 people injured.&nbsp;

<h2>'Ceasefire now'</h2>

The rally which was organised by two progressive Jewish groups – Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and IfNotNow – according to organisers drew a total of 10,000 people inside and outside the Capitol and called for a ceasefire in Gaza.&nbsp;

However, a group of around 400 people entered the rotunda of the Cannon House office building on Wednesday (Oct 18) afternoon inside Capitol Hill. The group was reportedly led by about 25 rabbis reading testimonials from Palestinians in Gaza and reciting prayers.&nbsp;

The demonstrators dressed in black T-shirts carried banners and placards which read “Jews say cease-fire now” and “Not in our name” while activists sat clapping and singing on the floor.&nbsp;

“We shut down congress to draw mass attention to the U.S. complicity in Israel’s ongoing oppression of Palestinians,” said the Jewish Voice for Peace in a statement on X.

It added, “Just as we demand an end to genocide in Gaza, we must put the same effort into dismantling the systems of Zionism, apartheid, and colonialism that brought us to this moment.”

According to American media reports citing the organisers, about 300 people have been arrested so far. The Capitol police in a statement on X said three were charged with assault on a police officer.&nbsp;

Images and videos of the incident show protesters being restrained with zip ties and led into police vans. However, the number of those detained may rise as they continue processing arrests.&nbsp;

The rally on Wednesday afternoon also follows a smaller protest near the White House on Monday (Oct 16) which, according to JVP, drew at least 5,000 people. In a series of posts on X, IfNotNow said, “American Jews and allies have now blocked 4+ doors to the White House.”

It added, “We’re prepared to put our bodies in the way of more slaughter – we’re ready to stay here until Biden forces a ceasefire.”&nbsp;

The demonstration led to more than 30 arrests, according to media reports and has been attributed to either breaching safety barriers or obstructing entrances in the vicinity of the White House.&nbsp;
