He claimed that the papers were not classified and consisted of whatever "random papers happened to be on his desk during the meeting".

“I just held up a whole pile of — my desk is loaded up with papers. I have papers from 25 different things,” he said

The clarification came a day after CNN published the audio recording, which has been served as key evidence in the federal indictment Trump is facing for mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House.

In a devastating incident, a cleaner at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York, inadvertently erased decades of research by switching off a freezer in an attempt to silence what they deemed "annoying alarm" sounds.

The college has initiated legal action against the cleaner's employer, Daigle Cleaning Systems, claiming insufficient training, reported the Guardian.

As per the lawsuit recently filed in the New York Supreme Court in Rensselaer County, RPI is seeking damages exceeding $1 million, as reported by the Times Union newspaper.

The attorney representing RPI, Michael Ginsberg, expressed disappointment, stating, "People's behaviour and negligence caused all this. Unfortunately, they wiped out 25 years of research."

What really happened?

The incident occurred in 2020 when the unnamed cleaner worked for several months at RPI. The lab freezer that fell victim to the mishap contained various cultures crucial to a long-term research project on photosynthesis led by Professor KV Lakshmi from the biology and chemistry department, as reported by the BBC.

Typically, these cultures were stored at an ultra-low temperature of -112°F (-80°C).

On September 14, 2020, a few days before the freezer was unplugged, an alarm alerted lab personnel of temperature fluctuations.

The lawsuit highlights that, at that point, the specimens remained viable. Due to COVID-19 restrictions in place at the time, repairs could not be carried out for a week.

To safeguard the cultures and provide an explanation for the alarm, lab officials posted signs indicating the source of the noise and instructions on how to mute it.

In an effort to prevent further mishaps, Lakshmi installed a lock box on the freezer's outlet and socket to prevent anyone from unplugging it.

The lawsuit states, "[A] majority of specimens were compromised, destroyed, and rendered unsalvageable, demolishing more than 20 years of research."

During an interview with university officials, the cleaner expressed that they believed they were turning the circuit breaker on in response to the alarms.

The lawsuit noted that even after the interview, the cleaner failed to comprehend their mistake and maintained they were only trying to assist, attributing the incident to an "error" in reading the panel.

'Costly mistake': Cleaner turns off freezer, accidentally destroys decades of research in New York college

A chiseled block of sandstone in the US Capitol’s visitor center serves as a reminder that the home of the nation’s Congress was built in part by enslaved Black people. A bronze plaque says the stone, originally part of the building’s exterior, “commemorates their important role in building the Capitol.”

Many lawmakers need look no further than their own family histories to find a much more personal connection to slavery in America, a brutal system of oppression that resulted in the deadliest conflict in US history.

In researching the genealogies of America’s political elite, a Reuters examination found that a fifth of the nation’s congressmen, living presidents, Supreme Court justices and governors are direct descendants of ancestors who enslaved Black people.

Among 536 members of the last sitting Congress, Reuters determined at least 100 descend from slaveholders. Of that group, more than a quarter of the Senate – 28 members – can trace their families to at least one slaveholder.

Those lawmakers from the 117th session of Congress are Democrats and Republicans alike. They include some of the most influential politicians in America: Republican senators Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, Tom Cotton and James Lankford, and Democrats Elizabeth Warren, Tammy Duckworth, Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan.

In addition, President Joe Biden and every living former US president – except Donald Trump – are direct descendants of slaveholders: Jimmy Carter, George W Bush, Bill Clinton and – through his white mother’s side – Barack Obama. Trump’s ancestors came to America after slavery was abolished.

Two of the nine sitting US Supreme Court justices – Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch – also have direct ancestors who enslaved people.

None of the 118 leaders identified by Reuters disputed the findings that at least one of their ancestors had enslaved people, but few were willing to discuss the subject: Only a quarter of those identified as having slaveholding ancestors offered any comment to Reuters.

Representative Julia Brownley, a Democrat from California, was among those who did offer comment after Reuters emailed her a document about her ancestor Jesse Brownley. According to the 1850 census, her forebear enslaved three people in Portsmouth, Virginia. One was an 8-year-old girl.

“It was a profound thing to learn,” Brownley told Reuters. “When I was told that my great-great-grandfather had two slaves and a child slave that hit me really to the very core.”

Brownley grew up in Virginia. When desegregation came to the public schools in her town, she said, her parents enrolled her in an all-white girls boarding school three hours from home. Her world widened when she studied political science and history at Mount Vernon College, a women’s school that later merged with George Washington University, allowing her to meet a broader range of people, including a Black roommate.

"I think it's important for each member of Congress, in terms of their heritage, it is important for them to know that and bend into it,” she said. “We, as policymakers, members of Congress, we want to move our country forward to sort of that more perfect union, if you will. But we can't do that without knowing the scars in our history as well. And we have to know that and believe in the truths. And that's the way we can formulate better policy."

The Reuters examination reveals how tied America remains to the institution of slavery, said board-certified genealogist LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson, who worked with Reuters to review its reporting.

"I really believe, especially with respect to this Reuters project, that some of the notables whose genealogies we reviewed will pause and think about what it means that they, again, were kind of indirect beneficiaries of slavery. It wasn't something that just happened 200 years ago. You are a direct descendant of someone who benefited from this institution and that it could influence their perspective, especially the people who are currently involved in policymaking,” Garrett-Nelson said

To trace the lineages of the political elite, Reuters journalists assembled tens of thousands of pieces of information contained in thousands of pages of documents. They analyzed U.S. census records, including antebellum tallies of enslaved people known as “slave schedules,” as well as tax documents, estate records, family Bibles, newspaper accounts, and birth and death certificates. The records – in some cases, family wills that show enslaved human beings bequeathed along with feather beds and farm animals – provide a visceral link between today’s decision makers and slavery. In doing so, they expand upon the antiseptic story conveyed by the sandstone monument in the Capitol’s visitor center.

For Representative Gregory Meeks, a Black congressman who represents a district in Queens, New York, the search for his ancestors continues. The top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Meeks said in an interview that he has spent years trying to trace his family history back before 1870.

He found the birth certificate of his grandfather, a man born right after emancipation. The information it gives for that man’s father – Meeks’ great-grandfather – was enslaved, Meeks said.

Meeks said he talks about family heritage with his white congressional colleagues, both publicly and privately.

“Sometimes it does boil up on the committee, particularly, say if we're talking on financial services and we're talking about erasing the wealth disparities, access to capital, being able to move forward. Yes, I speak up and talk about it in very vivid terms to try to explain the perspective of me and America back then and how if we acknowledge that and how if we move forward to try to erase that and make sure that we're letting folks catch up, that we're having and we will have a better America," Meeks said.

About 15 years ago, Meeks said, he took a DNA test that showed his family came from the Mende people of Sierra Leone. Last year, he led a congressional delegation to Africa. In Sierra Leone, the lawmakers stopped at Bunce Island, a former slave-trading port.

He said visiting the port was the most emotional moment for him of the trip and allowed him to reflect on his ancestors’ struggle.

“As I closed my eyes, I could just imagine what was taking place at that time, as I was standing on that island. And so it was both tears and joy. Joy that I'm here. Tears that my ancestors had to go through, what they had to go through,” he said. “Tears and joy."

In a big development, CNN has accessed a tape-recording of Donald Trump's 2021 conversation regarding classified documents and military secrets he allegedly took with him after the culmination of his term. This could be a major blow to the former US President, as he faces criminal trial with respect to his indictment charges he was slapped with earlier this month, for unlawfully holding the said documents.

A North Carolina man named Phil Stringer experienced the upgrade of a lifetime when he found himself as the sole passenger on a flight after an 18-hour delay. Originally scheduled for a 6:20 a.m. departure from Oklahoma City to Charlotte, North Carolina, Stringer was the only traveller to show up at the gate when boarding finally began past midnight, reported the New York Post. Stringer captures the unique experience on TikTok Stringer, feeling apologetic for making the American Airlines crew show up just for him, soon discovered that the flight attendants had a sense of humour. They turned the situation into a "private party" in the sky, which Stringer captured on TikTok and shared with the world. The video gained over 15.4 million views, showcasing the flight attendants laughing and cheering as they performed the required announcements and demonstrations for their audience of one. @TODAYshow @hodakotb @craigmelvin @SavannahGuthrie @DylanDreyerNBC This is an amazing story about a friend of mine, Phil Stringer! Stringer, initially surprised by the lack of other passengers at the gate, had tried unsuccessfully to change his flight multiple times during the 18-hour wait. As the COO of a real estate brokerage, he needed to get home. He expressed his apologies to the crew, who jokingly teased him about not leaving a few hours later. 'Private party' in the sky: US man enjoys entire plane to himself after 18-hour flight delay

In a concerning development, three new cases of malaria have emerged in the United States, with one reported in Texas and two in Florida.

What alarms officials is that these cases were locally transmitted, indicating that a mosquito within the US was carrying the malaria parasite. This is the first instance of local transmission since 2003 in Palm Beach County, Florida, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reported the New York Post.

Potential spread of malaria by local mosquitoes raises concerns

While most malaria cases in the US originate from individuals who have travelled abroad and were exposed to disease-carrying mosquitoes, the recent cases involve people who had not left the country.

This raises fears that local mosquitoes could be spreading the disease to others. Estelle Martin, an entomologist at the University of Florida, emphasised the worrisome nature of local transmission in an area.

Malaria transmission and symptoms

Malaria is transmitted when a mosquito bites a person carrying the parasite. The parasite then develops inside the mosquito, which subsequently bites other individuals.

Notably, people with the parasite may not exhibit symptoms, making it easier for the disease to spread when an asymptomatic person is bitten. Symptoms of malaria include fever, shivers, chills, headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and fatigue.

If left untreated, the infection can lead to severe complications such as jaundice, anaemia, kidney failure, seizures, mental confusion, coma, and even death.

Climate change and vector-borne diseases

These recent cases highlight the heightened risk of diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks, and other vectors due to a warming climate.

Climate change is playing a definitive role in the spread of vector-borne diseases across the United States.

Malaria-infected mosquitoes were discovered in a swampy area of Sarasota County, where one of the Florida cases was identified.

Local authorities promptly applied insecticides to reduce the mosquito population in the area. It is also possible that the three recent cases resulted from a traveller who carried the disease from another country and was subsequently bitten by a mosquito, which then bit one of the local individuals, reported the New York Post.

Heatwave tragedy: Man, stepson lose lives during Texas hiking expedition

In a groundbreaking development, the United Nations' first independent investigator to visit the US detention centre at Guantanamo Bay, Irish law professor Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, has revealed that the 30 men held there continue to endure ongoing cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment in violation of international law.

Presenting her comprehensive 23-page report to the UN Human Rights Council, Ní Aoláin emphasised that while the 2001 attacks were indeed crimes against humanity, the subsequent use of torture and rendition by the United States against alleged perpetrators and their associates constituted a grave breach of international human rights law, reported the Associated Press.

This, she argued, not only violated the rights of the detainees but also hindered the pursuit of justice, as information obtained through torture is inadmissible in trials.

Guantanamo Bay visit a first for UN

Ní Aoláin's visit to Guantanamo Bay marked the first time a US administration had permitted a UN investigator to examine the facility since its establishment in 2002. Commending this as a positive step towards addressing challenging human rights issues, the professor called upon other countries that restrict UN access to detention facilities to follow suit. During her visit, she was granted unrestricted access to the detention centre, including meetings with both "high-value" and "non-high value" detainees.

In response to the report, the United States submitted a statement to the Human Rights Council, emphasising that the investigator's findings were solely her own and expressing significant disagreement with many of her factual and legal assertions.

While Ní Aoláin acknowledged that some improvements had been made in the confinement of detainees, she voiced serious concerns about the ongoing detention of the 30 men, highlighting their severe insecurity, suffering, and anxiety. She provided examples of constant surveillance, forced removal from cells, and unjust use of restraints as manifestations of their mistreatment. Many detainees she encountered displayed profound psychological distress, including anxiety, helplessness, hopelessness, stress, depression, and dependency.

The professor expressed grave concern about the US government's failure to provide adequate torture rehabilitation programs for the detainees. She criticised the existing specialist care and facilities at Guantanamo, deeming them inadequate to address the complex and urgent mental and physical health issues faced by the detainees, such as permanent disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, chronic pain, gastrointestinal and urinary problems. Additionally, she shed light on the deprivation of support from families and communities, the lengthy detention without trial or charges, hunger strikes, force-feeding, self-harm, suicidal ideation, and premature ageing experienced by the detainees.

Ní Aoláin repeatedly underscored her profound concern that 19 of the 30 men still held at Guantanamo had never been charged with any crime, despite spending two decades in US custody. She argued that their continued detention stemmed from authorities' unwillingness to face the consequences of torture and ill-treatment rather than any ongoing threat posed by the detainees. The professor emphasised that the use of information obtained through torture in trials is prohibited, and she highlighted the United States' commitment to refraining from such practices.

Furthermore, Ní Aoláin identified fundamental fair trial and due process deficiencies in the military commission system, expressing concern about the extensive secrecy surrounding judicial and administrative proceedings. She concluded that the US had failed.

Also watch | 20 years since the opening of Guantanamo Bay, the infamous US prison Ní Aoláin repeatedly underscored her profound concern that 19 of the 30 men still held at Guantanamo had never been charged with any crime, despite spending two decades in US custody. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

The iconic Three Springs Ranch, nestled in Colorado and famous for the remarkable dinosaur bones discovered by a young girl, has been sold for an astounding $14 million to a consortium of buyers, including two Pennsylvania businessmen.

This transaction, which closed earlier this month, not only marked the end of the ranch's ownership by a New Orleans estate for over half a century but also paved the way for a new chapter in its rich history, reported the Daily Mail.

The ranch, spanning approximately 110,000 acres, with 20,000 acres being deeded and the remainder available for cattle grazing, captivated the attention of home developer Chris Kaclik and his partner, who have pledged to maintain its functioning as a ranch. With a focus on rearing Angus and Wagyu beef, as well as horses, the new owners aim to preserve the natural state of the land, which is home to elk and deer hunts, while also engaging in potential archaeological excavations in the future.

The story of Three Springs Ranch begins in 1979 when 12-year-old amateur paleontologist India Wood made a groundbreaking discovery on the property, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. Unearthing the remains of an Allosaurus, Wood's find gained national attention and the fossils were subsequently donated to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The discovery not only showcased the ranch's significance in paleontological history but also set the stage for Wood's memoir, documenting her extraordinary journey.

The subsequent partnership with the Denver Museum of Science allowed for the excavation of the remaining bones and the assembly of the fully restored Allosaurus, named Alice, which now proudly stands alongside a plaque commemorating Wood's remarkable journey.

The US president also said that the turmoil was “part of the struggle within the Russian system.” This comes after mercenary group Wagner’s chief Yevgeny Prigozhin declared an armed rebellion in Russia with Putin saying that he is determined to quash the said revolt, which claimed to have seized control of the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, on Saturday.
