As per an annual bee survey conducted by the University of Maryland and Auburn University, honeybee hives in the United States have experienced the second highest death rate on record, with beekeepers losing nearly half of their managed colonies. However, despite this staggering loss, the survey also found that the overall number of honeybee colonies in the country has remained relatively stable, reported the Associated Press.

Honeybees play a vital role in pollinating more than 100 crops, including nuts, vegetables, berries, citrus fruits, and melons. Scientists attribute the high mortality rate to a combination of factors, including parasites, pesticides, starvation, and the effects of climate change.

The survey reports that the 48 per cent loss of colonies in the past year is higher than the previous year's loss of 39% and the 12-year average of 39.6 per cent. However, it is not as severe as the 50.8 per cent mortality rate observed in the 2020-2021 period. Beekeepers participating in the survey indicated that a 21 per cent loss over the winter is deemed acceptable, yet more than three-fifths of them reported losses higher than threshold.

To maintain the overall population of honeybee colonies, commercial beekeepers invest significant resources in splitting and restocking their hives. This approach has helped beekeepers rebound from substantial losses, contributing to the relative stability of the bee colony population.

While the current situation is far from the crisis observed 15 years ago, when managed pollination was under serious threat, challenges persist. Experts believe that honeybees will not go extinct but will continue to face environmental threats. The varying degrees of colony losses experienced by different beekeepers demonstrate the unpredictable nature of these challenges. Factors such as parasitic mites, bad weather, queen issues, and pesticides further compound the difficulties faced by honeybees.

The parasitic mite Varroa destructor, which transmits viruses, is identified as the primary culprit behind honeybee losses. Pesticides exacerbate the problem by weakening bees' immune systems and reducing their ability to seek food. Even small infestations of varroa in colonies can have devastating effects, as they make bees more susceptible to viruses.

Other contributing factors include landscapes dominated by a single crop, which deprive bees of diverse food sources, as well as bouts of extreme weather.
The United States Justice Department on Friday (June 23) slapped criminal charges against four Chinese chemical manufacturing companies and eight individuals. Allegations against these companies and individuals are that they illegally trafficked chemicals which are used to make fentanyl, a highly addictive painkiller mainly responsible for the opioid crisis in the US.

The companies in the focus of the three separate indictments face allegations that they sold the precursor chemicals to the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico which has funnelled the drug into the US.

Prosecutors have said that these companies published advertisements of the precursor chemicals on social media platforms in Mexico and the United States and they made use of fake customs forms and mislabelled packages in order to ship the precursor chemicals by boat and air.

Attended a luncheon at the @StateDept, where I had the opportunity to interact with @VP @KamalaHarris, @SecBlinken and several other distinguished people from different walks of life. pic.twitter.com/0ahdWesS7H — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) June 23, 2023 × US Vice President Kamala Harris on the other hand also reflected upon the impact the Indian Americans have had on the United States in every facet of life. "I am struck by the extraordinary impact Indian Americans have had on our country in every facet of life. Take for example the historic number of members of the United States Congress with Indian heritage," the US Vice President said at the state luncheon attended by PM Narendra Modi on Friday. "Prime Minister Modi, we are honoured to welcome you. We also welcome the members of the President's Cabinet who are here and all of the members of Congress who are here," she said. The US Vice President further said: "We see the impact of Indian Americans from American companies to neighbourhood businesses, from the studios of Hollywood to university research labs across our country." She said India is an important part of her life. "When my sister Maya and I were growing up, our mother would take us to India pretty much every other year. And the purpose of those trips was that we would well understand where she came from, what produced her, so that we could spend time with our grandparents, with my uncle," Harris said during her address. "As I travel the world as Vice-President, I've seen the impact of India's global impact. In South East Asia, India-made vaccines saved lives. In the African continent, India's longstanding partnerships support prosperity and security. Through the Indo-Pacific, India helps promote a free and open region," she added.
