The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval for a groundbreaking vaccine, Abrysvo, for pregnant women to safeguard infants from birth up to 6 months of age against lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) and severe LRTD caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), the federal health agency said in a press release.

Notably, this is the first vaccine of its kind. Earlier in May, the federal agency approved Abrysvo for the prevention of LRTD caused by RSV in individuals aged 60 years and older.

Director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, Peter Marks, said, “RSV is a common cause of illness in children, and infants are among those at highest risk for severe disease, which can lead to hospitalisation".

“This approval provides an option for healthcare providers and pregnant individuals to protect infants from this potentially life-threatening disease," he added.

What is RSV?

RSV, a highly contagious virus responsible for respiratory infections across all age groups, especially impacts infants, making them susceptible to severe respiratory illness requiring hospitalisation. The approval of Abrysvo offers a vital preventive measure for pregnant women to shield infants from the potentially life-threatening effects of RSV.

Abrysvo is intended for administration during the gestational age of 32 to 36 weeks and involves a single-dose injection into the muscle. However, it is noteworthy that pregnant women who were highly susceptible to preterm birth were generally kept out of Abrysvo's clinical studies, the FDA press release said.

Abrysvo side-effects

Certain side effects were noticed among pregnant women who received the vaccine. These included pain at the injection site, headache, muscle pain, and nausea. Additionally, a rare but significant hypertensive disorder, pre-eclampsia, occurred more frequently among those who received Abrysvo compared to the placebo.

FDA said in a press release, "In addition, although not commonly reported, a dangerous hypertensive disorder, known as pre-eclampsia, occurred in 1.8% of pregnant individuals who received Abrysvo compared to 1.4% of pregnant individuals who received placebo. In the safety studies, low birth weight and jaundice in infants occurred at a higher rate in the pregnant Abrysvo recipients compared to pregnant placebo recipients."

Results of the study

Within 90 days after birth, Abrysvo showcased an 81.8 per cent reduction in severe LRTD risk and a 69.4 per cent reduction within 180 days after birth. For pregnant individuals at 32 to 36 weeks gestational age, Abrysvo led to a 34.7 per cent reduction in LRTD risk and an impressive 91.1 per cent reduction in severe LRTD risk within 90 days after birth.

Looking at the 180-day mark, Abrysvo demonstrated a 57.3 per cent reduction in LRTD risk and a 76.5 per cent reduction in severe LRTD risk compared to the placebo.

US: FDA approves first vaccine for pregnant women to safegaurd infants from RSV

A Chicago woman, Tracy Marie Fiorenza, 41, has been arrested on charges of sending threatening emails to former US president Donald Trump and his youngest son Barron Trump. This incident has raised concerns and garnered significant attention from the public and legal authorities.

The alleged threats

According to the US attorney’s office in Chicago, a formal complaint was filed against Fiorenza earlier this month in the US district court for the southern district of Florida. The complaint states that Fiorenza allegedly sent a threatening email in May, declaring, “I will state that I will shoot Donald Trump Sr AND Barron Trump straight in the face at any opportunity I get!” These menacing words were directed at the former president and his son, causing alarm and prompting immediate legal action.

Targeted email recipient

The email in question was addressed to the head of an educational institution in Palm Beach county, southern Florida. This geographical location is significant because it is where Donald Trump maintains his primary residence, the Mar-a-Lago resort, club, and residence complex in Palm Beach. The proximity of the threat to Trump's primary residence escalated concerns regarding the safety of the former president and his family.

Repetition of threats

Shockingly, this was not an isolated incident. The complaint further reveals that Fiorenza allegedly sent another threatening email in June targeting Trump and Barron, the former president's 17-year-old son with his third wife Melania Trump. These repeated threats have only intensified the legal ramifications for Fiorenza.

Response from Fiorenza's representative

As news of Fiorenza's arrest broke, a representative for her could not be immediately reached for comment. The motive behind these threatening emails remains unclear, and further investigations are expected to shed light on Fiorenza's intentions and any potential affiliations.

Context of political polarisation

This incident takes place against the backdrop of escalating political violence and threats in the US in recent years. A Reuters report released earlier this month highlighted that political violence has reached its highest levels since the 1970s, underscoring the need for vigilance and the swift response of law enforcement agencies to such threats.

Donald Trump's legal challenges

Apart from facing threats and political challenges, Donald Trump is currently embroiled in a series of criminal and civil legal cases in multiple states, including New York, Washington, Florida, and Georgia. These legal battles come as he seeks the Republican Party's nomination for the 2024 presidential election, with hopes of returning to the White House after his defeat by Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election. The first trial concerning his business interests is scheduled for October, adding to the complexity of his legal situation.

China deployed a swarm of surveillance satellites to spy on two significant military training operations involving the United States and Australia, Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported. During the recently concluded Exercise Talisman Sabre, China is said to have deployed hundreds of its satellites over Australia to gather intelligence.

Among these satellites was China's Shiyan 12-01, manoeuvring strategically beneath the equator to keep a watch on the joint war games between the US and Australia. Additionally, satellites like Shijian-17 and Shijian-23 were observed moving eastward to cover various zones where the military exercises took place.

Vigilance over ‘Exercise Malabar’

In addition to spying on Exercise Talisman Sabre, China's surveillance satellites are also tracking the ongoing Exercise Malabar, a naval training programme.

Over 300 satellites are reportedly engaged in monitoring these activities, accumulating a total of more than 3,000 flight hours since the commencement of Exercise Malabar on August 10.

China is investigating a Chinese national accused of spying for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the country's state security ministry said on Monday.

The 39-year-old Chinese national, surnamed Hao, was a cadre at a ministry and had gone to Japan for studies, which was where the spying recruitment occurred, the ministry said. Hao's gender was not revealed.

The statement came less than two weeks after the ministry said it uncovered another national also suspected of spying for the CIA after being recruited in Italy. The US embassies in Beijing and Tokyo did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

The ministry said Hao had become acquainted with a US embassy official known as "Ted" while sorting out a visa application. He invited Hao for dinners, presented gifts, and sought Hao's help with writing a paper that Ted promised to pay for, the ministry said.

China investigates citizen accused of spying for CIA, says security ministry

Former US President Donald Trump has confirmed that he will not be taking part in the upcoming Republican primary debates, Reuters reported. However, Trump did not specify whether he will opt out of all the Republican debates.

He took the decision basis his leading position in the recent opinion polls. It is worth noting that the recent polls reflect the dominance of former president Trump in the Republican quarters. The most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll from this month indicated that Trump commands 47 per cent of the Republican vote nationally. Meanwhile, Trump's rival and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis saw a decline of six percentage points from July, settling at 13 per cent. The other debate participants continue to struggle with single-digit levels of support.

This development comes after The New York Times reported that the former president, instead of participating in the upcoming Republican primary debate, will be sitting with former Fox News presenter Tucker Carlson for an online interview.

However, now Trump has put a stop to all the anticipation. Taking to the social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote, "The public knows who I am & what a successful Presidency I had." "I will therefore not be doing the debates," he added.

In the post, the former US president asserted that he has "legendary" numbers in opinion polls and therefore his popularity among voters for the 2024 election makes his participation unnecessary.

Trump has previously hinted at his intention to forego the debate scheduled for Wednesday evening in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His rationale is rooted in his belief that granting his Republican competitors the opportunity to launch attacks against him is illogical, given his substantial lead in national polls.

Trump to skip Republican primary debates, cites 'legendary' lead in opinion polls

Guatemalans began casting their vote on Sunday (August 20) in the presidential run-off election, as many hope for a reversal of democratic backsliding the country has witnessed in recent administrations. The election has also been marked by the harassment of a surprise frontrunner who has vowed to end corruption.

About the run-off elections

Polling stations opened at 7:00 am (local time) and the voting was supposed to end by 6:00 pm (local time). The first results are expected later in the evening. The current race is between progressive outsider Bernardo Arevalo and former first lady Sandra Torres, both of whom are said to be social democrats.

A poll by CID Gallup and the Freedom and Development Foundation said that Arevalo – who is running mainly on an anti-corruption message – is leading with 50 per cent against Torres, who is coming in second with 32 per cent.

A presidential candidate of the National Union of Hope party, Torres is the ex-wife of deceased leftist president Alvaro Colom. She launched her fourth shot at the presidency with a focus on violent crime and poverty.

It is also worth noting that since both candidates are left-leaning, the Central American nation will have its first leftist leader in over a decade.

Fears of election interference

The Organization of American States said a team of 86 election observers was in the country. “It is essential that citizens be able to express themselves freely with full guarantees and that their expressions be respected,” said Eladio Loizaga, head of the OAS mission in Guatemala, on Saturday.

This comes amid fears of efforts to undermine the vote after Arevalo’s surprise second-place finish in June’s first-round vote was followed by raids against his Semilla party offices and those of electoral officials. Therefore, the vote has been closely watched by the international community.

Outgoing President Alejandro Giammattei has vowed to ensure an orderly vote and transition of power. Meanwhile, prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche ahead of the vote on Sunday did not rule out the possibility of more raids and arrests after the elections. Notably, Curruchiche has been sanctioned by the United States for corruption.

What’s at stake?

The outcome of this election is set to usher in a new era of widespread allegations of corruption and creeping authoritarianism that Guatemala has witnessed under recent administrations.

“I hope that everything is calm, that democracy wins, that there is no fraud or political issues...and that our country gets ahead more than anything,” Ardem Villagran, a merchant in Guatemala City told Reuters.

The winner of the election will take office on January 14, amid a number of challenges that Guatemala currently faces. According to the World Bank, the country has some of the worst poverty, malnutrition and child mortality rates in Latin America.

Guatemala also has one of the highest crime rates in the world with many killings attributed to gang violence related to drug trafficking.

Leader of Turkish Cypriot Ersin Tatar, on Saturday (August 19), called the road project which has triggered a rare tension with the United Nations peacekeepers in the region, “essential”. Meanwhile, Turkey’s ruling party spokesman called the UN peacekeepers’ response “unacceptable” which blocked the construction in the buffer zone dividing Cyprus.

Turkey and Turkish Cypriots criticise UN

The criticism by Turkey comes a day after a scuffle broke out between UN peacekeepers and Turkish Cypriot security personnel when the peacekeepers tried to block construction of a controversial road in Pyla, an ethnically mixed village. The area, the UN says, is a part of the buffer zone and under its jurisdiction.

The area in question is between the internationally recognised Republic of Cyprus in the south and a breakaway Turkish Cypriot statelet in the north. On Saturday, Turkish Cypriot officials accused the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) of overstepping its boundaries.

“It is unfortunate that an attempt was made by UNFICYP to obstruct the development of the road being carried out by a civilian contractor, within the sovereign territory of the TRNC,” said Tatar, in a statement to Reuters, referring to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), a breakaway state recognised only by Ankara.

Similarly, Omer Celik, spokesman for Turkey’s ruling AKP party defended the road project and slammed the UN’s move. “The attitude of the UN peacekeeping force serving in Cyprus...was unacceptable and extremely wrong,” said the Celik, on X (formerly Twitter).

He also said that the UN peacekeepers’ attitude “aimed at pleasing the Greek Cypriot side has damaged the reputation” of the UN mission in Cyprus. Notably, Pyla is the only village where Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots live side by side.

Authorities in TRNC have also defended the project and said it had a “humanitarian objective” and aimed at providing ease of access to TRNC territory for our citizens” living in the village.

Tatar, also the president of the TRNC, told Reuters the road was essential for purely humanitarian grounds to address economic and transportation issues for Turkish Cypriots living in that village.

Imagine being at home with your family when suddenly, out of nowhere, a huge block of ice falls from the sky and smashes into your house. That's exactly what happened to a family in Massachusetts.

One evening, as they were inside their home, they heard an incredibly loud noise. The family described it as an explosion, like the loudest sound he had ever heard. At first, they thought their house had been struck by lightning, reported the Associated Press.

Worried for their safety, they hurried upstairs to make sure their two kids were okay. Surprisingly, despite the thunderous noise, the children were peacefully asleep. After checking on their children, they went on a hunt around the house to figure out what had caused the terrifying noise. What they found was astonishing.

A massive chunk of ice

When they went outside, they discovered a massive block of ice sitting on their back steps. Not only that, but there was debris scattered all over their yard and roof. This wasn't something you'd expect to find in your backyard!

At first, they had no idea where this giant chunk of ice had come from.

Surprisingly, they couldn't see much damage at first. But when they went inside, they realised the situation was more serious than they thought.

Damage inside and out

The ice had made a big hole in their roof. From the outside, it looked like the impact was about 18 inches to two feet wide. But inside their home, the damage was even worse. It was a puzzling and alarming situation.

Jeff and his wife gathered about 10 pounds of the ice in bags, but there was still a lot more of it around. They were determined to figure out what had happened and why this huge chunk of ice had fallen on their house.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the people responsible for making sure flying is safe, have started an investigation. Holding out for a break is a high-stakes bet for those looking to get into the housing market. The property boom's price rises finally slowed last year, but house prices have recovered the roughly $3 trillion they lost. One indicator of borrowing costs has reached a level not seen in almost two decades, and the federal reserve has hinted it may raise rates further, boosting the likelihood of 8% mortgage rates.
