The mother of a six-year-old boy, who shot his teacher at the Richneck Elementary School in Virginia, United States earlier this year, has pleaded guilty to felony child neglect on state charges on Tuesday (August 15), according to American media reports. This was part of a deal with prosecutors to resolve a state case related to the incident.

What is the plea deal?

Deja Taylor, a 26-year-old mother who owned a gun that her son used to shoot his first-grade teacher, Abigail Zwerner, has pleaded guilty to a charge of felony child neglect, as a part of her plea deal. In line with this, she had admitted that the weapon was stored in such a way that the boy could access it.

While the charge carries a maximum statutory sentence of five years in prison, due to her plea agreement, the prosecutors said they will not seek higher than six months. However, Judge Chris Papile has said that he reserves the right to sentence outside that recommendation at her sentencing, which is scheduled for October 27.

Taylor’s attorney had previously said that they were not sure how the boy was able to get hold of the gun because it was stored with a trigger lock on the top shelf of a bedroom closet.

However, assistant Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney, on Tuesday said that the boy had taken the gun from his mother’s purse, which was on top of a dresser. The weapon was not secured with a trigger lock, according to the prosecutors.

“I stole it because I needed to shoot my teacher,” the prosecutor said the boy told investigators. However, Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney Howard Gwynn has said that the six-year-old will not be criminally charged.

About the incident

The incident occurred on January 6, earlier this year when the six-year-old took a gun to school in his backpack in the morning before pulling it out at the end of the day and firing it at his teacher, said the police.

Last week, unsealed court documents also showed that the boy also boasted about the incident. Amy Kovac, a reading specialist at Richneck, speaking about the incident, during an interview, said that the six-year-old looked proud, and she was stunned by what he said.

The United States has seen a record increase in homeless people this year. A Wall Street Journal Review of data from around the country revealed the figures. The data so far this year is up roughly 11 from 2022 this marks a sharp jump that would represent by far the biggest recorded increase since the government started keeping track.

A judge in Montana, United States, who heard the country’s first constitutional climate trial earlier this year, has ruled in favour of the more than a dozen young plaintiffs, on Monday (August 14). This comes after 16 young people filed a lawsuit that sought to hold the officials in the state accountable for their inaction on climate change, in the US state.

About the court order

In the order, District Court Judge Kathy Seeley ruled that Montana’s continued development of fossil fuels violates a clause in the state constitution that guarantees its citizens the right to a “clean and healthful environment.”

“Plaintiffs have a fundamental constitutional right to a clean and healthful environment, which includes climate as part of the environmental life-support system,” said Seeley in more than a 100-page ruling after the case closed on June 20.

Notably, Montana is one of several states that have explicit environmental guarantees in their state constitution.

While the verdict will not stop the state from burning fossil fuels, it will reverse a recently passed state law that prevented government agencies from considering the impacts of greenhouse gases when issuing permits for development projects involving fossil fuels.

What was the case about?

The case, Held v. Montana, has been closely watched as similar litigations have been filed across the country. The lawsuit centres around the state’s constitutional right to a “clean and healthful environment,” and was filed by plaintiffs whose ages range from five to 22.

Roger Sullivan, an attorney for the young plaintiffs, from the non-profit Our Children’s Trust, had alleged that Montana’s ongoing permitting of polluting fuels like coal and gas is contributing to a global crisis, including, “heat, drought, wildfires, air pollution, violent storms, loss of wildlife, watching glaciers melt.”

He also argued that because of these effects, the young people he represents are disproportionately suffering psychologically and healthily. While some plaintiffs testified, the trial also witnessed the rare instance in which climate experts were questioned on the witness stand.

Lawyers are ‘over the moon’

“My initial reaction is, we’re pretty over the moon,” said Melissa Hornbein, an attorney who represented the plaintiffs in the 2020 lawsuit, according to The Guardian. She added, “It’s a very good order.”

In a statement, the attorneys for the plaintiffs called the court’s decision a “sweeping win”.

Julia Olson, chief legal counsel and executive director of Our Children’s Trust said, “Today, for the first time in US history, a court ruled on the merits of a case that the government violated the constitutional rights of children through laws and actions that promote fossil fuels, ignore climate change, and disproportionately imperil young people.”

It added, “This is a huge win for Montana, for youth, for democracy, and for our climate. More rulings like this will certainly come.” Notably, the non-profit has brought similar youth-led constitutional climate lawsuits in four other states, including Hawaii, which is set to go to trial in June 2024.

Cuba, once known for some of the finest cigars across the world, may have been overtaken by its near neighbour, the Dominican Republic. This was after the world’s largest cigar producer, the Dominican Republic, during the COVID-19 pandemic crossed the $1 billion mark in revenues.

The revenue

Earlier this year, Habanos SA – the Havana-based business that oversees all Cuban cigar sales – saw a two per cent rise in revenue when compared to the previous recording-breaking sale in 2021.

In 2022, Cuban cigar maker Habanos reported sales of $545 million following the COVID-19 pandemic and the havoc caused by a major hurricane.

However, in 2021, it posted a 15 per cent rise in revenue with $507 million. Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic, which was expected to surpass the $1 billion mark nearly three years ago, has since reportedly crossed that threshold.

Even today, a report by the British weekly magazine, The Spectator, says that the exports are still growing, making cigars the country’s fifth-largest export after gold, electrical products, textiles and medical equipment.

What is driving this rise?

While Cuba’s hand-rolled cigars, which include brands such as Cohiba, Montecristo and Partagas, are considered by many the best in the world, the Dominican Republic’s success has mostly been driven by a significant increase in the production of machine-made cigars.

According to the British media report, the Dominican Republic is now home to more than 50 factories in the country employing more than 120,000 people. However, the Caribbean nation also leads the ‘luxury’, hand-made cigars which once helped Cuba’s Santiago achieve the title of ‘cigar capital of the world’.

‘Cigar boom’ of 1990s

It is also worth noting that the Dominican Republic’s billion-dollar success did not take place overnight as the country has been slowly inching towards the title since the so-called ‘cigar boom’ of the early 1990s.

During this time, a series of events took place which drove the Caribbean nation to its world’s largest cigar producer title. An 18-year-old named Eduardo León Jimenes started the country’s oldest factory, La Aurora, which has recently become the biggest commercial organisation, in the Dominican Republic. La Aurora prides itself on its ‘perfecto’ cigars and only 100 are made per day.

While the factory has played a significant role, the Dominican Republic’s cigar-producing boom would have been less likely if it weren’t for the revolution in Cuba.

Notably, Cuba at the time was the world’s leading cigar exporter which led to the industry’s nationalisation. This reportedly prompted many top growers in the country to shift their operations to a less restrictive Dominican Republic.

Not to mention an American ban on all Cuban imports. Even today Cuban cigars still can’t be legally sold in the United States which is the world’s biggest market for cigar sales. In global comparison, most revenue in cigars is generated in the US, amounting to a whopping $22 billion, as of 2023, according to Statista.

The Dominican Republic’s lead over Cuba has also been driven by the decades of global shortage in cigars while Havana has suffered a combination of natural disasters and the loss of veteran rollers, who have either died or retired, according to the British media report.

If Taiwan is safe then the world is safe and Taiwan will not back down in the face of authoritarian threats, the island's vice president told supporters on a US visit that Beijing has condemned, while reiterating a willingness to talk to China.

William Lai, also a frontrunner to be Taiwan's next president at January elections, is in the United States on what is officially a transit stop on his way to Paraguay for the inauguration of its new president. Paraguay is one of only 13 countries to maintain formal ties with the Chinese-claimed island.

Taiwan and the United States both say the stopovers, including one in San Francisco on the way back, are routine, but China has denounced them and called Lai a separatist "troublemaker".

In comments at a lunch in New York on Sunday, Lai said that "if Taiwan is safe, the world is safe, if the Taiwan Strait is peaceful, then the world is peaceful", according to a readout from Taiwan's presidential office.

Lai reiterated in New York that on the basic of dignity and parity he was "very willing" to talk to China and seek peace and stability, following Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen's policies.

But Lai said he will protect Taiwan's sovereignty, that only Taiwan's people can decide their future and that the Republic of China - Taiwan's formal name - and the People's Republic of China are "not subordinate to each other".

If Taiwan is safe then the world is safe and Taiwan will not back down in the face of authoritarian threats, the island's vice president told supporters on a US visit that Beijing has condemned, while reiterating a willingness to talk to China. Paraguay is one of only 13 countries to maintain formal ties with the Chinese-claimed island. Taiwan and the United States both say the stopovers, including one in San Francisco on the way back, are routine, but China has denounced them and called Lai a separatist "troublemaker". Taiwan will not bow down to threats, says vice president on US trip

The relationship between China and Taiwan has turned increasingly sour and it does not seem things will be improving anytime soon. In the latest China has condemned Taiwan's Vice President William Lai's visit to the United States. Beijing reacted in anger to the brief US visit saying that he was a separatist and a troublemaker.

A police officer in Florida, United States, was taken to the hospital and is now recovering after being exposed to suspected fentanyl while testing drugs during a traffic stop investigation. He reportedly started to feel lightheaded and shaky and said he could not feel his arms or legs, according to a statement by the local sheriff’s office.

What happened?

The incident occurred in Florida, on Thursday (August 10) when the police personnel were responding to multiple calls about a “reckless driver” who had allegedly fled a hit-and-run in the City of Bunnell, said the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO), in a statement.

The suspect, later identified as 61-year-old George Clemons from Florida’s Crescent City, also continued to drive along the state road and reportedly ran off the road multiple times and nearly caused several additional crashes.

According to the sheriff’s department, the car eventually stopped on its own as bystanders stood by with the driver of the vehicle until police personnel arrived. Upon arrival, the FCSO deputies found the driver seated in his seat with the “car keys under his leg,” the statement added.

Deputies also saw narcotics, an empty Bud Light can and a mini “shooter” of alcohol in plain view inside the vehicle, said the FCSO. Clemons was arrested after he refused to conduct field sobriety exercises and was charged with DUI, said the deputies.

What happened to FCSO deputy?

According to the sheriff’s department, FCSO Deputy Nick Huzior began feeling “lightheaded, shaky and could not feel his arms or legs” while testing “a powdery white substance” in the vehicle despite wearing personal protective equipment.

Subsequently, Deputy First Class Kyle Gaddie administered one dose of Naxolone (Narcan) but after seeing no improvement in Deputy Huzior’s condition a second dose was given, said the police. Narcan, which consists of an active drug called naloxone, has become a life-saving medication used to treat an opioid overdose.

He added, “Thankfully, our deputies are well trained and equipped with Narcan which allowed DFC Gaddie to potentially save the life of a fellow deputy.”

Clemons has been charged with DUI, fentanyl possession, cocaine possession, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana, possession of a legend drug without a prescription, possession of suboxone and possession of drug paraphernalia, said the FCSO, in a statement.

Video | ‘I can’t feel my legs,’ says US police officer after being exposed to ‘fentanyl’ during drug test

The United States Republican lawmaker from the state of Florida, Greg Steube announced that he has filed articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden on Friday (August 11) for “high crimes and misdemeanors.” Republican lawmakers’ new bid to impeach the incumbent comes as House Republicans continue to investigate Biden and the business dealings of his son, Hunter Biden.

New impeachment articles filed against US president

In a statement, Steube’s office said he filed the articles against the president “for high crimes and misdemeanors.” The four articles filed feature accusations of abuse of power, bribery, extortion and honest services fraud; obstruction of justice; fraud; and financial involvement in drug and prostitution activities.

The allegations stemmed from claims of illegal business dealings and tax crimes. “It’s long past time to impeach Joe Biden,” said the Florida Republican lawmaker’s office. He added, “He has undermined the integrity of his office, brought disrepute on the Presidency, betrayed his trust as President, and acted in a manner subversive of the rule of law and justice at the expense of America’s citizens.”

Earlier this year, Steube announced his backing for former US President Donald Trump for his 2024 White House bid and said he is the only one who can fix the “disastrous policies of the Biden administration,” as quoted by The Hill.

During an interview with Newsmax, on Thursday, he also referred to various investigations that House Republicans have conducted since gaining the majority and also spoke about Hunter Biden’s former business partner Devon Archer’s recent testimony.

Earlier this month, Archer told the House Oversight Committee that Hunter Biden had repeatedly put his father, who was vice president at the time, on calls during his business dealings. However, Archer also denied on multiple occasions that the incumbent president had been a part of the discussions.

Previous impeachment articles against Biden

The recent filings were not the Republican lawmakers’ first attempt to impeach Biden, as Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, back in May, also introduced articles to get the incumbent president out of the White House.

Pak police nab man from graveyard for murdering his American wife

Mirwais Balkhi, a former Afghan education minister who fled his homeland two years ago in the wake of the Taliban's takeover, now lives in the United States. In the West, he and his friends, who also escaped Afghanistan in 2021, now grapple with depression.

"We are all suffering the highest level of depression," Balkhi admitted to WION. His voice carried the weight of shared sorrow.

He said that many who left Afghanistan, himself included, sought solace in Western and North American countries. However, he said the new surroundings cannot fully replace the sense of familiarity they left behind.

Diplomacy to diaspora

Engaging in a candid conversation with WION, Balkhi revealed that now in the West the feeling of "idleness" haunts him and his Afghan friends in exile.

"We feel a burden to other societies," he said adding, "We were useful assets in Afghanistan". He also does not shy away from admitting that, at times, regret gnaws at him for leaving Afghanistan.

"At the bottom of our hearts, we feel we have lost so badly, we lost Afghanistan, we lost our dreams," he confessed.

Balki did his education in India and he was also the deputy chief of mission at the Afghan embassy in New Delhi.

"I was in India for 12 years," he reminisced as his tone softened. "I have done my study in India. I did my diplomatic career in India."

In the subcontinent, he found a sense of belonging, drawing parallels between Delhi and Kabul. The commonalities mostly were able to serve as a balm for his homesickness.

Nation's fall into Taliban's hands

August 15, 2021, marked a sombre turning point for Balkhi and his friends.

"It was as usual... I left my home for university to take classes," he recalled, a sense of normalcy threading through his words.

But the day's events quickly shattered that normalcy, he said. The city's atmosphere shifted dramatically, roads were blocked, and rumours of the Taliban's return circulated.

"I realized that I was mistaken," Balkhi conceded and said that the Taliban's actions contradicted the narrative at the time that they have changed.

The extrajudicial activities in Afghanistan revealed the true face of Taliban 2.0.

Balkhi, whose writings are anti-Talibani, recognised soon enough that there is a threat to his life under the new regime.

He knew he had to leave.

Education is the key

For Balkhi, education was central to Afghanistan's progress.

Having served in the Ministry of Education during a time of security upheaval, he understood the pivotal role schools played in shaping the nation's future.

"Even in remote areas," he said, recalling the days before the Taliban made a comeback, "it was not the case" that girls were prevented from going to school. However, the Taliban's rise led to the closure of hundreds of schools, thwarting the progress he had strived for.

Hope in the face of uncertainty

Despite the dark clouds cast by the Taliban's return, Balkhi is optimistic about Afghanistan's resilience.

"I still believe that the Taliban could not long-last," he asserted, placing faith in the bravery of Afghan women who are resisting.

A cautionary message

Balkhi concluded his conversation with WION with a cautionary message to the world. "Afghanistan will be the unique case," he predicted, "where diplomatic ties will be formed with a terrorist group".

He urged the global community to "act jointly before it is too difficult to compensate". Mirwais Balkhi's journey, marked by hope, captures the intricate layers of a nation in turmoil.

As he navigates his new life on foreign soil, his thoughts often return to the country he still considers home. He yearns for the day when the shadows of despair will recede, and the light of progress will once again illuminate Afghanistan's path.

Diplomacy to diaspora Engaging in a candid conversation with WION, Balkhi revealed that now in the West the feeling of "idleness" haunts him and his Afghan friends in exile. I did my diplomatic career in India." In the subcontinent, he found a sense of belonging, drawing parallels between Delhi and Kabul. The commonalities mostly were able to serve as a balm for his homesickness. Nation's fall into Taliban's hands August 15, 2021, marked a sombre turning point for Balkhi and his friends. Education is the key For Balkhi, education was central to Afghanistan's progress. Hope in the face of uncertainty Despite the dark clouds cast by the Taliban's return, Balkhi is optimistic about Afghanistan's resilience. "I still believe that the Taliban could not long-last," he asserted, placing faith in the bravery of Afghan women who are resisting. A cautionary message Balkhi concluded his conversation with WION with a cautionary message to the world. EXCLUSIVE: In US, former Afghan education minister's heart still longs for Kabul

Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna has said that China needs to respect India’s borders and that he will work towards New Delhi getting critical US technologies like some other key allies including Israel, Japan and South Korea.

Ro Khanna, co-chair of the Congressional India Caucus who is leading a bipartisan Congressional delegation here, hoped that India can play a role in effecting peace between Russia and Ukraine.

“It`s very important that we keep India`s sovereignty.…They (China) need to respect India`s border and this is why I went to the Western Naval Command. We are working very closely with the American Navy to make sure the Arabian Sea remains free for navigation and that the Indian Ocean remains free, and we will continue to strengthen that relationship,” Khanna told ANI in an interview.

Answering a query about discussions on democratic and human rights during his India visit, the Congressman stated that both India and US are democracies and recognising minority rights and pluralism helps become better democracies.

“I believe that both America and India are important democracies that they have to move towards becoming even better democracies. And that means recognizing pluralism, recognizing minority rights, making sure that every person is treated with equality,” Khanna said.

“These are conversations as good friends as allies that we need to continue to have with respect. I will say I have had these conversations in India and they`ve been welcomed….and the government has been welcoming me having these conversations”, he added.

Strongly condemning the attack on the India consulate in San Francisco by Khalistani separatists, Khanna said that there can be no violence against an embassy.

“There was no place for that and I condemned it very strongly. There can be no violence against an embassy, against a consulate in America and there is no space for a separatist movement,” he said.

“Punjab is a part of India, that is a settled question. We need to make sure everyone is treated equally, whether Hindu, Christian, Sikh or Muslim. Punjab is a part of India,” he added.

Asked about India’s G20 Presidency and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Ro Khanna said that India has a great opportunity for leadership and can play a role in establishing peace.

He said there needs to be a ceasefire as it is affecting commodity prices globally.

“We need to have Ukraine`s sovereignty restored, but there also needs to be peace. There needs to be a ceasefire, otherwise, this is affecting wheat prices. It`s affecting oil prices, not to mention the loss of human life...so hopefully India can play a role in getting peace,” the Congressman said.

China needs to respect India’s borders, says US Congressman Ro Khanna

A recently disclosed letter from 1982 has shed light on the intimate thoughts of former US President Barack Obama regarding his sexuality.

Penned during his time at Occidental College in Los Angeles, the letter addressed homosexuality and unveiled his innermost fantasies involving same-sex encounters.

While the letter exposes a facet of his personal reflections, it also emphasises his acceptance of his male identity and a broader contemplation of gender, reported the Hindustan Times.

The uncovered letter, penned when Obama was 21, delves into his vivid same-sex fantasies as a form of mental detachment from reality.

These musings served as an escape from mundane life's repetitive dramas, though he stressed that they remained purely products of his imagination.

Beyond his fantasies, Obama also expressed a desire for an androgynous perspective, advocating for a holistic perception of individuals instead of gender-based categorisation.

Historian's revelations and hidden contents

Renowned historian David Garrow unearthed previously concealed portions of the letter, which were omitted by its recipient, Alex McNear.

This discovery provides a nuanced glimpse into Obama's younger thoughts and aspirations. The letter resides at Emory University, its contents inaccessible for photography or removal.

Evolution of identity and political stance

Today, Barack Obama is a devoted husband to Michelle and father of two. His personal journey includes a transformation in his views on homosexuality and same-sex marriage.

Initially opposing same-sex marriage, his stance evolved during his presidential tenure, culminating in his support for its federal legalisation in 2015.

David Garrow's extensive interview delved further into Obama's character and motivations, paralleling his insecurities with those of President Trump.

Garrow noted that the disclosure of youthful sexual fantasies is not uncommon and emphasised that many individuals experience such contemplations. The biographer also expounded on Obama's multifaceted character, including his introspection on race and his policy commitments.

1982 letter reveals Barack Obama's candid reflections on gay fantasies to ex-girlfriend

Amid the ongoing worldwide plastic crisis, the findings of a recent study might just make your heart skip a beat. In a number of recent studies, it was found that microplastics are detected virtually everywhere, from rain, and snow to even human blood.

According to the latest study published by the American Chemical Society (ACS), a team of scientists in Beijing Anzhen Hospital, China found microplastics in the human heart for the first time.

What are microplastics?

Microplastics have been defined as tiny chunks of less than five millimetres long pieces of plastic and microfibres from clothes that get caught in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Previous studies have also confirmed the worst fears that microplastics are being carried all around the world including remote areas such as Antarctica where, last year, microplastics were found in the fresh snowfall.

Studies have also found that they can enter the human body through mouth, nose and other body cavities. However, scientists have yet to find out the potential exposure to, and effects from, microplastics, on the human body.

How was the study conducted?

The pilot experiment conducted by Doctors Kun Hua, Xiubin Yang and their team sought to investigate whether these particles can enter people’s cardiovascular systems through indirect and direct exposures.

Therefore, researchers collected heart tissue samples from 15 people during cardiac surgeries, as well as pre-and post-operation blood specimens from half of the participants, said the statement about the study. The samples were then analysed with laser direct infrared imaging.

What did they find?

Researchers, using the previously mentioned method, found 20 to 500 micrometre-wide particles made from eight types of plastic, as per the study. They also found “tens to thousands of individual microplastic pieces in most of the tissue samples collected”, but the amounts and materials varied between participants.

Among the eight types of plastics found was Polyethylene terephthalate, which is used in clothing and food containers as well as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is widespread in window frames, drainage pipes, paint and more.

The study also noted that while all the blood samples collected contained plastic particles, the average size after the surgery decreased but the particles came from more diverse types of plastics.

This suggests that some microplastics were inadvertently introduced to the subjects during the surgeries. While the study was conducted with a small number of participants, researchers said that they have provided preliminary evidence of how “various microplastics can accumulate and persist in the heart and its innermost tissues.”

They added that the “findings show how invasive medical procedures are an overlooked route of microplastics exposure, providing direct access to the bloodstream and internal tissues.”

“The detection of in vivo MPs (microplastics) is alarming, and more studies are necessary to investigate how the MPs enter the cardiac tissues and the potential effects of MPs on long-term prognosis after cardiac surgery,” said the research team, in a statement.

In a worrisome first, scientists detect microplastics in human hearts: Study

A distressing incident unfolded as an American Airlines plane en route to Florida suddenly plummeted more than 15,000 feet in mere three minutes.

American Airlines Flight 5916 was on its journey to Gainesville, Florida, from Charlotte, North Carolina, when the shocking incident occurred, as reported by the New York Post.

The aircraft's abrupt descent was triggered by a reported "possible pressurisation issue," leaving passengers shaken by the ordeal.

Passenger's horrifying account

Harrison Hove, a University of Florida professor and a passenger aboard the flight, took to social media to recount the harrowing experience.

He described the incident as "terrifying," highlighting that mere photographs fail to encapsulate the acrid smell, loud bang, and the discomfort of ear pressure changes.

Images shared online showed passengers wearing oxygen masks, struggling to breathe while the aircraft descended.

Hove commended the flight crew for their handling of the situation and expressed relief at finally being on the ground.
