A recent survey of first- and second-generation Black immigrants across 13 European Union countries has brought to light a&nbsp;troubling increase in racism, with Germany, Austria, and Finland reporting the highest rates of discrimination and harassment.

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) conducted the survey, showing that within six years since the previous study, the percentage of respondents who reported experiencing racial discrimination in the past 12 months had risen by 10 points to reach 34 per cent.&nbsp;

<h2>Austrian&nbsp;and German stats</h2>

In Austria and Germany, the proportion was a concerning 64 per cent, nearly double the previous level of 33% in Germany and significantly higher than the 42 per cent&nbsp;recorded in Austria six years earlier. Finland followed closely with 54% reporting racial discrimination.

FRA Director Michael O’Flaherty told Reuters that the lack of improvement since the last survey was shocking, highlighting that people of African descent face increasing discrimination solely due to the colour of their skin.

The survey also examined respondents who reported feeling racially discriminated against over the past five years, which had risen to 45 per cent&nbsp;across the 13 countries surveyed, marking a six-point increase from the previous study. The top three countries remained the same, with Germany reporting the highest rate at 76 per cent.

The extensive poll, conducted by Ipsos for the FRA, involved 16,124 immigrants and their descendants across 15 countries. The survey took place between October 2021 and September 2022 and will produce several reports on other ethnic minorities and Muslims. The current report, titled "Being Black in the EU," is the first to be published from this broader survey, focusing on 6,752 individuals born in sub-Saharan Africa or with at least one parent born there residing in 13 EU countries.

The proportion of respondents who reported experiencing racist harassment over the past five years remained unchanged at 30 per cent&nbsp;compared to six years earlier. Germany reported the highest national rate at 54 per cent, followed by Finland and Austria. In contrast, Portugal and Sweden had the lowest harassment rates and, along with Poland, reported the lowest levels of racial discrimination according to respondents.

The FRA report included a set of recommendations for EU member states, urging them to enforce anti-discrimination legislation rigorously and consider racial bias as an aggravating circumstance when determining penalties for crimes.

The United States has initiated legal proceedings to secure the forfeiture of a $300 million superyacht allegedly controlled by Russian billionaire oligarch Suleiman Kerimov, who is subject to US sanctions.

According to a report by Reuters, the 348-foot (106-metre) Amadea yacht was confiscated by Fijian authorities in May 2022, acting on a US warrant. This move coincided with Washington's efforts to strengthen sanctions enforcement against individuals linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin, as a means to exert pressure on Moscow to end its conflict with Ukraine.

The filing of a complaint in a Manhattan federal court marks the commencement of a potentially protracted legal process. The United States aims to establish ownership of the yacht, which is currently harboured in San Diego, and subsequently auction it. The proceeds from the auction would then be directed toward Ukraine. Suleiman Kerimov, along with his family, holds assets valued at $10.7 billion, as per Forbes magazine.

Kerimov amassed a significant portion of his wealth through his stake in the Russian gold producer, Polyus. He faced US Treasury Department sanctions in 2014 and 2018 in response to Russia's actions in Syria and Ukraine, which prohibited his access to the US financial system. In May 2023, Polyus was also subjected to sanctions, a move the company deemed unjustified.

The US Department of Justice, in its complaint on Monday, alleged that Kerimov acquired the Amadea in 2021, subsequently violating US sanctions by making over $1 million in maintenance payments through US financial institutions. The owners of the yacht will be given the opportunity to contest this claim in a court of law.

In a separate development, attorneys representing Millemarin Investments, a company asserting ownership of the Amadea, stated in a Fijian court that the yacht is owned not by Kerimov, but by former Rosneft chief Eduard Khudainatov, another Russian oligarch not subjected to sanctions. Khudainatov is not mentioned in the complaint filed on Monday.

US prosecutors contend that a transaction conducted on September 14, 2021, which transferred ownership of the Amadea from Millemarin to a newly established entity, Errigan Marine, was orchestrated to create the appearance that Evgeny Kochman, president of the sanctioned yacht brokerage, Imperial Yachts, was the yacht's owner. Prosecutors asserted that Kochman was merely a "straw owner."

As per Reuters, Imperial Yachts, in a statement, expressed its disagreement with the allegations made by the DOJ, emphasising that neither the company nor Kochman had engaged in any unlawful activities.

Khudainatov, on the other hand, initiated a lawsuit against the United States on Monday in a San Diego federal court to secure the release of the yacht. Reuters quoted Adam Ford, his attorney, as saying, "The Amadea was seized upon false premises driven by political motivation."

This comes a day after the United States accused Iran of “actively facilitating” rocket and drone attacks on its forces in the two countries.&nbsp;

A report by NBC News, on Tuesday, said that two dozen American military personnel were wounded during these attacks.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, armed factions close to Iran have reportedly threatened US interests over Washington’s staunch support for Israel amid its ongoing war with Hamas after the Palestinian militant group launched a surprise attack in southern Israel on October 7.

Representative from the US state of Minnesota and Republican Tom Emmer has abandoned his bid to become the next speaker of the United States House of Representatives hours after he had garnered enough votes to become the latest GOP nominee for the job, on Tuesday (Oct 24), according to American media reports.

Emmer was the party’s third candidate in the last few weeks after the previous two candidates failed to garner enough support in the Congress. He abandoned his bid&nbsp;after it reportedly became clear that he would not get 217 votes on the House floor to become the next speaker.&nbsp;

<h2>Why did he quit?</h2>

A report by the Associated Press citing Republican sources familiar with the situation said that the House GOP whip, Emmer reversed course after former US President Donald Trump objected to his nomination and hardliners in the House denied the party leader the votes he would need for the gavel.

The House majority Whip had narrowly won an internal Republican ballot to replace ousted speaker Kevin McCarthy. According to US media reports, only 117 of Emmer’s colleagues voted for him in the final round of voting.&nbsp;

McCarthy’s historic ouster and with Emmer recently abandoning his bid to run for speaker, the House has once again been plunged into chaos, not to mention the GOP infighting that has paralysed Congress for over three weeks now.&nbsp;

“The dysfunction in the Republican Party right now seems to be saying we want to lose,” Kentucky Republican Andy Barr told CNN. He added, “That is crazy to me. We were elected as a majority to govern, and we are not doing that right now.”&nbsp;

Emmer, who is said to be a more moderate Republican representative, was also among those who voted to certify Democratic President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory over Trump&nbsp;following the January 6 attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters.

<h2>What have the Democrats said?</h2>

“Extreme MAGA Republicans have broken the Congress,” said top House Democrat Hakeem Jeffries, on social media referring to the former president’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. “The American people are paying the price. We must pursue a bipartisan path forward and reopen the House.”&nbsp;

Republicans hold a narrow 221-212 majority in the House which means that a candidate can afford to lose just four votes if Democrats remain united in opposition, which they have been during previous rounds of voting.&nbsp;

However, Dems have said that they are open to a compromise candidate if it allows the chamber to function.&nbsp;

<h2>What now?</h2>

The Republicans have now regrouped and said that they plan on holding an evening forum to hear from more hopefuls.&nbsp;

Representative Kevin Hern is one of about six representatives who have expressed interest again after he dropped his bid late Tuesday to back Mike Johnson, both of whom lost to Emmer in the closed-door party vote.&nbsp;

Representatives Byron Donalds, Chuck Fleischmann, Mark Green and Roger Williams have also put their names forward.&nbsp;

“We’ve got to go back and get another slate of nominees and let them work through the process and see who our next nominee will be, just like we did last night and today,” said Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer.

Tom Emmer drops out of US House speaker race hours after becoming latest Republican nominee

United States President Joe Biden and Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman, on Tuesday (Oct 24) held a phone call to discuss efforts to prevent the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas from “expanding” to the rest of the region, said the White House in a statement.&nbsp;

The discussion comes days after Biden said that he believed Hamas’ attack on Israel was aimed at disrupting warming ties between the country and Saudi Arabia.

<h2>What did the two leaders discuss?</h2>

According to a statement released by the White House, both Biden and the Saudi crown prince agreed to pursue broader diplomatic efforts “to maintain stability across the region and prevent the conflict from expanding.”

This comes as several Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, have expressed concerns about the conflict expanding and how it would affect their national security.&nbsp;

They also welcomed the delivery of humanitarian assistance from Egypt into Gaza and acknowledged that “much more is needed for civilians” to have sustained access to food, water and medical assistance, as per the White House.&nbsp;

This comes as the United Nations reported that no aid entered Gaza on Tuesday (Oct 24).

The UN aid spokesperson Eri Kaneko said around 20 trucks were unable to transport aid to Palestinian civilians without saying why the trucks had not been able to cross into Gaza via the Rafah border crossing.&nbsp;

<h2>Biden and MBS on hostages held by Hamas</h2>

According to the White House, the two leaders called for the “immediate release” of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza and welcomed efforts to secure their release.

This comes after Israel said more than 220 people were taken as hostages when the Palestinian militant group launched its surprise attack on the country on October 7.&nbsp;

“They also affirmed the importance of working towards a sustainable peace between Israelis and Palestinians as soon as the crisis subsides, building on the work that was already underway between Saudi Arabia and the United States over recent months,” said the White House.&nbsp;

It added the two leaders have “agreed to remain in close coordination” regarding the same.&nbsp;

<h2>Biden on Israel-Saudi relations and Hamas attack</h2>

Last week, the US president said, “One of the reasons why they acted like they did...why Hamas moved on Israel...(was) because they knew I was about to sit down with the Saudis”. He added, “The Saudis wanted to recognize Israel...unite the Middle East.”&nbsp;

Notably, the US was in the midst of brokering a deal to normalise relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia – home to Islam’s two holiest shrines – which was shattered once Hamas militants attacked Israel.&nbsp;

United States President Joe Biden and Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman, on Tuesday (Oct 24) held a phone call to discuss efforts to prevent the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas from “expanding” to the rest of the region, said the White House in a statement.

The discussion comes days after Biden said that he believed Hamas’ attack on Israel was aimed at disrupting warming ties between the country and Saudi Arabia. What did the two leaders discuss? According to a statement released by the White House, both Biden and the Saudi crown prince agreed to pursue broader diplomatic efforts “to maintain stability across the region and prevent the conflict from expanding.” This comes as several Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, have expressed concerns about the conflict expanding and how it would affect their national security. They also welcomed the delivery of humanitarian assistance from Egypt into Gaza and acknowledged that “much more is needed for civilians” to have sustained access to food, water and medical assistance, as per the White House. This comes as the United Nations reported that no aid entered Gaza on Tuesday (Oct 24). The UN aid spokesperson Eri Kaneko said around 20 trucks were unable to transport aid to Palestinian civilians without saying why the trucks had not been able to cross into Gaza via the Rafah border crossing. Biden and MBS on hostages held by Hamas According to the White House, the two leaders called for the “immediate release” of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza and welcomed efforts to secure their release. This comes after Israel said more than 220 people were taken as hostages when the Palestinian militant group launched its surprise attack on the country on October 7. “They also affirmed the importance of working towards a sustainable peace between Israelis and Palestinians as soon as the crisis subsides, building on the work that was already underway between Saudi Arabia and the United States over recent months,” said the White House. It added the two leaders have “agreed to remain in close coordination” regarding the same. Biden on Israel-Saudi relations and Hamas attack Last week, the US president said, “One of the reasons why they acted like they did...why Hamas moved on Israel...(was) because they knew I was about to sit down with the Saudis”. He added, “The Saudis wanted to recognize Israel...unite the Middle East.” Notably, the US was in the midst of brokering a deal to normalise relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia – home to Islam’s two holiest shrines – which was shattered once Hamas militants attacked Israel. Israel-Hamas war: Biden, Saudi crown prince discuss efforts to prevent conflict from ‘expanding’

With an upsurge in violence across the West Bank, the Biden administration has reportedly begun readying plans for mass evacuations of hundreds of thousands of American citizens from the Middle East.

As per a report by the Washington Post, four officials familiar with the US government’s contingency planning said that the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas has stoked fears of broader escalation.

The officials stated that the Americans living in Israel and neighbouring Lebanon were of distinct concern, further underlining that the mass evacuation was a 'worst-case scenario' and that the government is churning out possible solutions to the problem that are seen as more likely.

However, one of the officials said, it “would be irresponsible not to have a plan for everything.”

The Israeli defence forces, which have been backed by US military aid, have been prepping for the much-anticipated ground offensive against Hamas militants who took the world by surprise after they carried out an unprecedented attack against Israel from Gaza on Oct 7.

<h2>Complicated logistics&nbsp;</h2>

The officials said that even though the United States was fully backing its staunch ally Israel, it was deeply alarmed by the likelihood of an escalation.&nbsp;

They further said that in recent days, having to abruptly relocate a large number of people has made the US ponder over the process' complicated logistics.

According to State Department estimates, there were approximately 600,000 US citizens in Israel and another 86,000 in Lebanon when Hamas attacked.

<h2>Lebanon, a major concern</h2>

The report said that Washington's major concern, Lebanon, was mainly due to the presence of Hezbollah, a militant group and political party that has exercised control in the country since 1992.

The terror group has long accepted training and weapons from Iran, raising concerns that it could launch an offensive against Israel from the north, resulting in a two-front war that could stretch Israeli forces. &nbsp;

“This has become a real issue,” the Washington Post quoted one official as saying. “The administration is very, very, very worried that this thing is going to get out of hand.”

The report said that the Biden administration was also concerned about the demonstrations being held across the Arab world that, as per the top officials, have put the US personnel and citizens at the highest risk.

Dozens of US states, on Tuesday (Oct 24) filed a lawsuit against Instagram’s parent company Meta alleging that the social media platform contributes to the youth mental health crisis, is profiting “from children’s pain,” and misleading people about the safety of its platforms.&nbsp;

The lawsuit comes after a nationwide bipartisan investigation found that Meta has been “harming” children and teens due to the addictive nature of their social media platforms.

The latest lawsuit is among a string of legal actions against social media companies on behalf of children and teens.&nbsp;

<h2>About the lawsuit</h2>

There are a total of more than 40 US states which are suing Meta but 33 of them have filed their complaint in a federal lawsuit as opposed to others which have sought to fight their case in local courts.&nbsp;

“In seeking to maximize its financial gains, Meta has repeatedly misled the public about the substantial dangers of its Social Media Platforms,” said the joint lawsuit filed by more than 30 states, including California and Illinois in the city of Oakland.&nbsp;

It added, “Meta has harnessed powerful and unprecedented technologies to entice, engage, and ultimately ensnare youth and teens.”&nbsp;

The lawsuit argues that Meta has exploited young users by creating a business model designed to make them spend as much time as possible on the platform despite harm to their health.&nbsp;

It also accused Meta of knowingly inducing addictive and compulsive social media use despite knowing that teenage brains are susceptible to the need for approval in the form of “likes” from other users about their content.&nbsp;

“Meta did not disclose that its algorithms were designed to capitalize on young users’ dopamine responses and create an addictive cycle of engagement,” said the complaint.&nbsp;

The lawsuit also alleges Meta has violated a law banning the collection of data about children under the age of 13.&nbsp;

“Kids and teenagers are suffering from record levels of poor mental health and social media companies like Meta are to blame,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James in a statement announcing the suit.&nbsp;

The suit has sought a variety of remedies, including substantial civil penalties. According to James, it also urges the federal court to order Meta to stop manipulative tactics.&nbsp;

<h2>Meta is ‘disappointed’</h2>

Meta has since responded to the lawsuit and said that it was “disappointed”&nbsp;that the attorneys general have chosen to single them out instead of seeking industry-wide solutions.&nbsp;

Instagram’s parent company also said that it has developed more than 30 tools in its apps to support teenage users, and made it easier for parents to “shape” online activity.&nbsp;

The lawsuit is said to have stemmed from a nationwide investigation announced in November of 2021. "Research has shown that young people’s use of Meta's social media platforms is associated with depression, anxiety, insomnia, interference with education and daily life, and many other negative outcomes," said the complaint.&nbsp;

“Our bipartisan investigation has arrived at a solemn conclusion: Meta has been harming our children and teens, cultivating addiction to boost corporate profits,” said California attorney general Rob Bonta, in a statement.&nbsp;

It added, “With today's lawsuit, we are drawing the line.” The investigation came after Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen leaked more than 20,000 pages of internal documents sparking criticism of the social media giant putting profit before the security of its users.

Over 30 US states sue Meta, accusing it of fuelling a youth mental health crisis

The Alaska Airlines pilot who tried to shut down the engines of a plane mid-flight, as per court documents had taken magic mushrooms and thought he "was dreaming".

Last week, the off-duty pilot who was travelling in an extra seat in the cockpit was arrested after the Alaska Airlines flight made an emergency landing in Portland, Oregon.

<h2>'I just wanted to wake up'</h2>

Court documents on Saturday showed that 44-year-old Joseph Emerson was under the influence of magic mushrooms and claimed to be having a nervous breakdown during the incident.

"I pulled both emergency shut-off handles because I thought I was dreaming and I just want to wake up," he told the police, as per a criminal complaint.

Emerson had lunged for the emergency shut-off handles that would've turned off the aeroplane engine fuel supplies, effectively turning it into a glider.

The off-duty pilot also attempted to wrestle open an emergency exit in the rear of the aircraft.&nbsp;

Emerson, who eventually had to be restrained by the cabin crew during an emergency landing, told the police he had not slept in 40 hours.&nbsp;

He had a conversation with the investigating officer "about the use of psychedelic mushrooms, and Emerson said it was his first time taking mushrooms."

As per the US Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon, Emerson now faces a federal charge for interfering with flight crew members and attendants.&nbsp;

Along with this, he has also been charged with 83 counts each of attempted murder, and reckless endangerment, along with one count of endangering an aircraft. US Media reports show that he has pleaded not guilty.

<h2>Why was he in the cockpit?</h2>

Emerson was sitting in the jump seat of the plane's cockpit, in line with airline policy for non-working staff.

As per AFP, a short way into the journey from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco, the off-duty pilot chatted with the pilots before attempting "to grab and pull two red fire handles that would have activated the plane's emergency fire suppression system and cut off fuel to its engines."

"After a brief physical struggle with the pilots, Emerson exited the cockpit," said the Department of Justice.

Reacting quickly, the pilots reversed the handles, said Alaska Airlines in a statement, adding that the aircraft had landed safely.

After two months of stagnation, business activity in the United States improved in october because of a rise in industrial demand and a decrease in service-sector inflation. The S&P global flash composite production index rose to 51, its highest level in three months, just one point over the 50 threshold that separates growth from contraction. For the first time since april, factories saw an increase in new orders, while service providers saw an uptick in business. As inflationary pressures eased, the composite selling price index also dropped to a three-year low.

Reports are coming in that US aircraft carriers in the West Asian region are being targetted in drone attacks by Iran proxies. While so far it has managed to thwart these attacks, there's increasing worry that a major attack could drag the US further into the Israel-Hamas war, the same way the Pearl Harbour attack led America to join World War II.

Brigadier General Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon spokesman, told reporters on Oct 19 that USS Carney, a navy destroyer deployed to West Asia (Middle East) was targeted by drones and missiles in the northern Red Sea.

“We cannot say for certain what these missiles and drones were targeting, but they were launched from Yemen heading north along the Red Sea, potentially towards targets in Israel,” Ryder said, adding that he wasn’t sure whether the attacks targeted the US Navy ship.

He blamed the pro-Iranian Houthi rebels in Yemen for launching a flurry of missiles and drones.&nbsp;However, this was not an isolated incident.

<h2>US military under attack in Middle East</h2>

Over the past week, American troops stationed in other parts of the Middle East—Iraq and Syria—have come under attacks. &nbsp;There are about 2,500 US troops in Iraq.

Ain al-Asad airbase, which hosts US and other international forces in western&nbsp;Iraq, was targeted by drones and missiles on October 19 evening. Multiple blasts were reportedly heard inside the base.

The attack came after rockets hit another military base hosting US forces near Baghdad’s international airport on Thursday, Iraqi police said.

A day before on Wednesday, US forces in Iraq were targeted in two separate drone attacks, with one causing minor injuries to a small number of troops even though the US military managed to intercept the armed drone.

At the same time, a drone hit US forces in&nbsp;Syria, resulting in minor injuries, while another one was brought down.

The spate of attacks on US military in the Middle East comes amidst the&nbsp;<a name="_Hlk149076403">Israel-Hamas war </a>that has divided the Western nations and the Gulf.

<h2>Israel-Hamas war dividing the world </h2>

While the US-led West backs Israel’s right to self-defence as the latter scrambles to wipe out Hamas for the October 7 terror attack that left hundreds and thousands of Israelis dead, the Arab nations, on the other hand, have expressed concerns over the humanitarian issue in Gaza that has been spiralling as a consequence of war.

The Arab nations have strongly expressed reservations over what they see as US meddling in the Israel-Hamas conflict after Washington decided to send military advisors and ammunitions to aid Israel.

<h2>US sends THAAD, Patriot systems </h2>

In the wake of rising attacks on US troops, the Pentagon said that it was deploying a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and additional Patriot air defence missile system battalions to the Middle East.

In recent weeks, The United States has sent a significant amount of naval power to the Middle East in recent weeks, including two aircraft carriers, their support ships and about 2,000 Marines.

Apart from that, the Pentagon is also sending military advisers, including a Marine Corps general versed in urban warfare, to Israel to aid in its war planning.

One of the officers leading the assistance is Marine Corps Lt. Gen. James Glynn, who previously helped lead special operations forces against the Islamic State and served in Fallujah, Iraq.

<h2>US blames Iran’s proxies</h2>

The US believes that Iran-sponsored proxies have been targeting the US military in the Middle East after Washington sent its US Navy destroyer near Israel and promised them more military aid.

At the UN Security Council held a quarterly open debate on the Middle East in New York on Tuesday (Oct 24), US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that Iran amid Israel's war with Hamas that if Tehran or its proxies “attack us”.

"The United States does not seek conflict with Iran. We do not want this war to widen. But if Iran or its proxies attack US personnel anywhere, make no mistake. We will defend our people -- we will defend our security -- swiftly and decisively," he said.

US officials have been on heightened alert for potential attacks on American and partner forces in the Middle East.

While Iranian proxies have periodically tried to attack US positions in Iraq and Syria, Washington officials are concerned that the groups may exploit the Israel-Hamas conflict could seize on the instability in the region to launch new attacks.

Hence, US’ decision to send weapons, especially the THAAD&nbsp; system, to Israel is believed to be part of a wider plan to bolster firepower in the region if Iran or its proxies intervene in the battle against Hamas and Hezbollah.

He blamed the pro-Iranian Houthi rebels in Yemen for launching a flurry of missiles and drones. However, this was not an isolated incident. US military under attack in Middle East Over the past week, American troops stationed in other parts of the Middle East—Iraq and Syria—have come under attacks. There are about 2,500 US troops in Iraq. Ain al-Asad airbase, which hosts US and other international forces in western Iraq, was targeted by drones and missiles on October 19 evening. At the same time, a drone hit US forces in Syria, resulting in minor injuries, while another one was brought down. The spate of attacks on US military in the Middle East comes amidst the Israel-Hamas war that has divided the Western nations and the Gulf. Israel-Hamas war dividing the world While the US-led West backs Israel’s right to self-defence as the latter scrambles to wipe out Hamas for the October 7 terror attack that left hundreds and thousands of Israelis dead, the Arab nations, on the other hand, have expressed concerns over the humanitarian issue in Gaza that has been spiralling as a consequence of war. The Arab nations have strongly expressed reservations over what they see as US meddling in the Israel-Hamas conflict after Washington decided to send military advisors and ammunitions to aid Israel. US sends THAAD, Patriot systems In the wake of rising attacks on US troops, the Pentagon said that it was deploying a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and additional Patriot air defence missile system battalions to the Middle East. US blames Iran’s proxies The US believes that Iran-sponsored proxies have been targeting the US military in the Middle East after Washington sent its US Navy destroyer near Israel and promised them more military aid. Also read | Israel air force drops leaflets in Gaza seeking information on hostages At the UN Security Council held a quarterly open debate on the Middle East in New York on Tuesday (Oct 24), US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that Iran amid Israel's war with Hamas that if Tehran or its proxies “attack us”. Hence, US’ decision to send weapons, especially the THAAD system, to Israel is believed to be part of a wider plan to bolster firepower in the region if Iran or its proxies intervene in the battle against Hamas and Hezbollah. In a significant legal development, attorney Jenna Ellis has entered a guilty plea in the Georgia election interference case. She becomes the fourth defendant in a wide-ranging racketeering case that centres&nbsp;on efforts to maintain Donald Trump in the presidency following his defeat in the 2020 election by Joe Biden.

Last week, lawyers Kenneth Chesebro and Sidney Powell, both key figures in the case, also entered guilty pleas just ahead of their trial, while Scott Hall, a bail bondsman, had pleaded guilty back in September.

<h2>Ellis' guilty plea and terms of agreement</h2>

Jenna Ellis's plea agreement entails her admission of guilt to one felony count of aiding and abetting false statements and writings. Notably, she had originally faced two charges, including one of racketeering.

In exchange for her guilty plea, Ellis has agreed to provide truthful testimony in future trials related to the case.

The terms of the plea deal further involve five years of probation, $5,000 in restitution to the Georgia secretary of state's office, 100 hours of community service, and a written apology to the people of Georgia.

<h2>Roots of Ellis's charge</h2>

Ellis's charges originate from a December 3, 2020, subcommittee hearing held by Georgia's Senate Judiciary Committee.

During this hearing, Rudy Giuliani and Ray Smith, attorneys for then-President Trump, presented a litany of unverified claims related to widespread election fraud.

Giuliani and Smith, both co-defendants in the Georgia case, asserted that Georgia's 2020 election saw tens of thousands of minors, felons, and deceased individuals casting votes.

Ellis has pleaded guilty to assisting this testimony, which prosecutors contend was designed to persuade the state legislature to disregard Joe Biden's victory in Georgia.

During the plea hearing, the prosecution stressed that the false statements made during the hearing were done with reckless disregard for the truth.

In an emotional moment during the proceedings, Jenna Ellis expressed her remorse and regret over her role in the events.

She acknowledged that she should have verified the accuracy of the claims made by fellow attorneys during the post-election challenges in multiple states, including Georgia.

Ellis admitted that, in the rush to contest the election results, she failed in her due diligence. She emphasised her belief in and value for election integrity, and, if she had been aware of the facts she knows now, she would have declined to represent Donald Trump in these post-election challenges.

The Fulton County Superior Court Judge, Scott McAfee, has not yet set a trial date for the remaining co-defendants, including former President Trump. As Trump's federal election interference trial is scheduled to commence in March, a Georgia trial is expected to be postponed until the spring, given the overlapping legal proceedings.
