US accuses Iran of ‘actively facilitating’ attacks on bases in West Asia. Washington says it will not allow threats to its interests to ‘go unchallenged’ after increase in attacks on its forces in the region. But with current attacks, would a US President really be willing to become embroiled in another war, especially in an election year?

The United States is setting its sights on a $300 million superyacht, alleging it's controlled by a Russian billionaire Oligarch under US Sanctions. The yacht was seized in fiji, and now authorities are looking to bring it to San Diego, setting the stage for a complex legal battle.

The United States on Monday (Oct 23) accused Iran of “actively facilitating” rocket and drone attacks on its forces in Iraq and Syria. This comes after Iran-backed militias in Iraq claimed responsibility for multiple attacks on US bases in the two countries.

President Joe Biden has since directed the Department of Defense to brace for additional similar attacks and respond appropriately, said White House spokesman John Kirby. He also said that the US has sent a “few” military advisors to Israel.

Attacks on US military bases

Kirby said there had been an uptick in such attacks over the last week, particularly over the last few days and that the US would not allow its interests in the region to “go unchallenged.”

Washington also raised concerns about an escalation of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. However, the US has rejected calls for a ceasefire saying its ally Israel has a right to self-defence.

“Iran continues to support Hamas and Hezbollah, and we know that Iran is closely monitoring these events and, in some cases, actively facilitating these attacks and spurring on others who may want to exploit the conflict for their own good or for that of Iran,” said Kirby.

He added, “We know Iran’s goal is to maintain some level of deniability here, but we’re not going to allow them to do that.” This comes as there has been an increase in attacks on US forces in the region, particularly since Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7.

Earlier this week, at least five rocket and drone attacks targeted three Iraqi military bases where American troops are stationed as part of the international coalition set up to fight the Islamic State group.

On Monday (Oct 23), Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iranian-backed militias, said that its forces used two drones to attack US military bases in Deir el-Zour province and in al-Shaddadi further north.

This was after the group also said that it attacked the al-Tanf garrison near the Jordanian and Iraqi borders which is near the desert Rukban camp home to tens of thousands of Syrians.

“We are deeply concerned about the potential for any significant escalation of these attacks in the days ahead,” said the White House spokesperson.

US sends ‘few’ military advisors to Israel

Kirby said that the US has also sent a “few” military advisors to Israel, adding that these officers have experience in “the sorts of operations that Israel is conducting, and may conduct in the future” and were “over there to share some perspectives.”

A report by the Associated Press said that the Pentagon has sent military advisers to Israel to help with war planning ahead of their potential ground operation in Gaza.

Among those is Marine Corps Lt. Gen. James Glynn, who has previously helped lead special operations forces against the Islamic State and served in Fallujah, Iraq, during some of the most heated urban combat there, a US official told AP.

China’s top diplomat Wang Yi will travel to Washington later this week, officials in the United States announced on Monday (Oct 23). The long-anticipated and rare visit comes amid soaring tensions in the Middle East among other issues related to trade, the Ukraine war, Taiwan, and Beijing’s actions at the sea near the Philippines.

Wang will visit Washington from October 26 to 28 and will meet with his American counterpart Secretary of State Antony Blinken and President Joe Biden’s national security advisor Jake Sullivan. It was not immediately clear if the Chinese official would meet the US president or not.

Wang will be the highest-ranking Chinese official in the US capital in nearly five years or so. The long-awaited trip follows visits by several high-level American lawmakers, including Blinken, to Beijing over the summer.

The visit also comes ahead of an expected meeting between Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in San Francisco, California, in November.

What’s on the agenda?

A senior US official who briefed reporters on the trip on customary condition of anonymity said that Washington’s top priority has been to ensure the intense competition between the world’s two largest economies and their disagreements over a host of issues do not veer into conflict, reported Reuters.

“We continue to believe that direct face-to-face diplomacy is the best way to raise challenging issues, address misperception and miscommunication, and explore working with the Chinese where our interests intersect,” said the US official, as quoted by AFP.

The visit also comes as Israel continues to bombard Gaza in retaliation for Palestinian militant group Hamas’ attacks, while Russia’s war in Ukraine grinds on. Washington has repeatedly reiterated support for both Tel Aviv and Kyiv.

The Israel-Hamas war and the Ukraine war would both be discussed, said a second US official, as per Reuters, adding that the US would “push the Chinese to take a more constructive approach on both.”

Speaking about territorial disputes in the South and East China Seas, US officials said Washington was deeply concerned by China’s “destabilizing and dangerous actions” in the South China Sea and this would also be on the agenda during Wang’s visit to Washington.

The US will also prioritise efforts to re-establish military-to-military ties with China, said the US officials.

Recently, both Beijing and Washington have sought diplomatic advantage against each other over the ongoing violence in the Middle East. During his multi-nation visit to the region, Blinken spoke to Wang asking Beijing to exert pressure on Iran, which supposedly backs Hamas.

China’s top diplomat Wang Yi to visit US, will discuss a range of issues, says Washington

United States Senator Bob Menendez pleaded not guilty in a New York court, on Monday (Oct 23) to a new charge alleging that the Democratic lawmaker conspired to act as an agent of the Egyptian government while serving as a member of Congress.

This comes after the senator from New Jersey who is said to be one of the most influential Democrats in the country rejected calls for his resignation but did step down from his chairmanship of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

What was the new charge about?

The 69-year-old senator said “not guilty” when asked to plead his case before Judge Sidney Stein at federal court in lower Manhattan.

This comes after federal prosecutors accused Menendez of conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government – Egypt – to which he again pleaded not guilty, said a spokesman for the US attorney’s office in Manhattan.

The new charge comes as Menendez, along with his wife and three other people, was indicted on charges of taking bribes and influence peddling to benefit Egypt, to which they had already pleaded not guilty last month.

Prosecutors have alleged that the senator and his wife, Nadine Menendez, accepted bribes of cash, gold bars and a luxury car from three businessmen in exchange for a range of corrupt acts between 2018 and 2022.

The federal prosecutors have also said that Menendez used “his influence and power to breach his official duty in ways that benefited the Government of Egypt”.

According to US laws, members of Congress cannot work on behalf of another country’s government.

Menendez calls new charge ‘absurd’

Speaking about the new charge against him, the US senator in a statement said that it “flies in the face of my long record of standing up for human rights and democracy in Egypt...Anyone who knows my record, knows this latest charge is as outrageous as it is absurd.”

So far, Menendez has resisted calls from more than 30 national Democrats to resign amid accusations that he passed information to the Egyptians about the staff at the US embassy in Cairo, ghostwriting a letter on Egypt’s behalf to influence fellow senators, among others.

If convicted, the 69-year-old senator could face up to five years in prison. Menendez was released on Monday on a $100,000 bond. His criminal trial is not expected to begin for another six months.

Former United States President and Republican Donald Trump signed up for the New Hampshire presidential primary on Monday (Oct 23) becoming the first person who has served as a president to file such paperwork in person more than once.

Trump also spoke about who he thinks should be the next speaker of the US House of Representatives after Jim Jordan wrapped up his failed bid to take the job on Friday (Oct 20), prompting at least nine new candidates to sign up ahead of a new selection process this week.

Trump in New Hampshire

As per Reuters, the US presidential hopeful ahead of the elections next year, was welcomed amid cheers in the US state as he filed for the presidential primary.

During the 2016 race after Trump had signed up on the first day of the filing period, he sent Vice President Mike Pence to file his paperwork for the 2020 contest in line with the tradition of other incumbents who asked their surrogates to finish the paperwork.

“Vote for Trump and solve your problems,” he wrote on the commemorative poster at the statehouse in the city of Concord that all the candidates are asked to sign, as per the Associated Press.

According to the AP, candidates this year have until October 27 to officially sign up and dozens of White House hopefuls are expected to do so in the upcoming days.

Notably, while Trump had won both the 2016 and 2020 Republican primaries in New Hampshire, he lost the state in both general elections.

About the Speaker race

When asked if he would endorse Republican Representative Tom Emmer’s bid as the House of Representatives speaker, Trump said Emmer called him up asking for his support as well as others who were vying for the position.

He added, “Well, we’re looking at a lot of people and, you know, I’m sort of trying to stay out of that as much as possible, but they’ll get it straightened out.”

He also took a shot at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis while touting his wide lead in current New Hampshire polls. Trump said that support for DeSantis in the US state has dropped significantly.

“I think DeSantis is really going down it looks like. I just looked at a poll that came out and he was in third place and he's another one where, as I call him Ron Desanctimonious, he was in fifth place.”

US presidential election: Trump files for New Hampshire primary ahead of campaign rally

United States President Joe Biden, on Monday (Oct 23) said that any discussions about a ceasefire in Gaza can only take place if the Palestinian militant group Hamas releases all hostages taken from Israel after its October 7 attack. Washington has also rejected proposals of a “humanitarian pause” to let aid into the besieged Gaza.

Potential ‘hostages-for-ceasefire’ deal?

During an event at the White House when asked if he would support a “hostages-for-ceasefire” deal, the US president said, “We should have those hostages released and then we can talk.”

Subsequently, he apologised for having to leave the event to promote his economic programme ahead of the US presidential election next year and said he had to go to the White House situation room for “another issue I have to deal with.”

Notably, the US president’s departure came after the Palestinian militant group said they had freed two more female hostages abducted from Israel.

This comes days after an American mother and daughter duo Judith and Natalie Raanan were freed. Israel, earlier on Monday, increased the number of those abducted to 222.

Biden’s call with the pope

During the event, Biden said that he discussed the ongoing war with Pope Francis on Sunday. “The pope and I are on the same page, he was very very, very interested in what we were doing,” said the US president, as quoted by news agency AFP.

Biden said he had “laid out to him what the game plan was” regarding US support for Israel, adding that “The pope was across the board supportive.”

The Vatican earlier said the call, which lasted about 20 minutes, “focused on conflict situations in the world and the need to identify paths to peace.”

White House rejects calls for ceasefire

Prior to the US president’s remarks, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters that Washington has rejected calls to pause operations and said that a ceasefire would “give Hamas the ability to rest, to refit and to get ready to continue launching terrorist attacks against Israel.”

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Monday (Oct 23) that he expected the 27-nation bloc’s leaders to call jointly for a “humanitarian pause” to let aid into Gaza given the dire conditions.

However, Miller said that the US was separately working to ensure a flow of humanitarian relief into Gaza with its envoy, David Satterfield, on the ground working “intensively” on aid.

Israel had a “legitimate right” to strike against “a terrorist organisation that has embedded its infrastructure inside civilian buildings”, including schools and hospitals, said Miller when asked about Israeli strikes in Gaza.

He added that Washington is advising that Israel “should do that in a way that minimises to the maximum extent possible civilian harm".

The incident took place on an Alaska Airlines flight bound for San Francisco, California which was later reportedly diverted to Portland, Oregon.

What happened?

The Alaska Airlines flight number 2059 operated by Horizon Air which had taken off from Everett, Washington was carrying 80 passengers and was diverted to Portland where it landed safely.

According to Alaska Airlines, the parent company of Horizon, pilots reported a “credible security threat related to an off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot who was travelling in the flight deck jump seat.”

“The jump seat occupant unsuccessfully attempted to disrupt the operation of the engines,” said the airline in a statement. It added, “The Horizon Captain and First Officer quickly responded, engine power was not lost and the crew secured the aircraft without incident.”

The crew on Alaska Airlines Flight 2059 reported the incident to air traffic control, where the Horizon Air pilot, as per Live ATC said, “We’ve got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit, and he doesn’t sound like he’s causing any issue in the back right now.”

“I think he’s subdued,” the pilot added. “We want law enforcement as soon as we get on the ground and parked.” The incident was also described as a “Level 4” which involves an “attempted or actual breach of the flight deck.”

The flight was scheduled to take off at 5:25 pm (local time) and land in San Francisco at 7:30 pm (local time).

“All passengers on board were able to travel on a later flight,” said Alaska Airlines in a statement, adding that the incident is being investigated by the Port of Portland Police Department and the FBI.

About the suspect

While the airline did not identify the suspect, on Monday (Oct 23) the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office in Portland charged 44-year-old Joseph Emerson with 83 counts of attempted murder, reckless endangerment and endangering an aircraft, as per news agency AFP.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a notice on Monday (Oct 23) to all American air carriers, saying that the incident was not linked “in any way, shape or form to current world events,” adding that it is supporting law enforcement investigations into the incident.

The notice seen by Reuters says that the individual at the centre of the case sought to disable the engines by deploying the fire suppression system.

President Joe Biden declared that until all of the hostages taken by Hamas are freed, he will not support an Israel-Hamas ceasefire. When questioned about the possibility of a ceasefire in exchange for Hamas releasing some 200 prisoners, including Americans, said to be in the Gaza Strip, Biden told reporters, "We should have those hostages released and then we can talk."

In a bizarre case, four people in the United States have been accused of buying and reselling "paleontological resources" valued at over $1 million. Among these resources are dinosaur bones that were illicitly exported to China.

This not only constitutes a breach of federal law but also runs afoul of the Paleontological Resources Preservation Act. These alleged misdeeds spanned a period of five years, commencing in March 2018 and culminating in March 2023, reported NBC news.

Who have been accused?

Utah residents Vint Wade and Donna Wade, aged 65 and 67, and Steven Willing (67) along with his son, Jordan Willing (40), hailing from Los Angeles and Oregon are the accused in the case.

All four individuals are confronting a barrage of charges stemming from their alleged involvement in the illegal trade of paleontological resources, in direct violation of the Paleontological Resources Preservation Act.

The Act classifies paleontological resources as fossilised remains, traces, or imprints of organisms that are preserved in or on the Earth's crust, holding significant paleontological interest.

They stand accused of acquiring, relocating, and exporting dinosaur bones from federal lands, resulting in a total value exceeding $1 million.

This unlawful operation included the extraction of paleontological materials, primarily dinosaur bones, from federal and state lands located in southeastern Utah.

Prosecutors contend that the Wades accumulated these paleontological materials with the intent to sell them to national merchants and to showcase them at gem and mineral exhibitions.

Furthermore, it is alleged that they sold paleontological materials to Jordan and Steven Willing. The Willings, acting through their business entity, JMW Sales Inc., are accused of deliberately mislabelling the dinosaur bones to reduce their perceived value before exporting them to China.

"By removing and processing these dinosaur bones to make consumer products for profit, tens of thousands of pounds of dinosaur bones have lost virtually all scientific value, leaving future generations unable to experience the science and wonder of these bones on Federal land," US Attorney Trina A. Higgins stated.

Who is Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir? Indian-origin diplomat nominated as US ambassador to Indonesia

Recent measures by the US aimed at restricting the export of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chips to China could pave the way for Huawei Technologies to expand its presence in the $7 billion Chinese market, as Nvidia is compelled to step back, according to analysts.

According to Reuters, while Nvidia has traditionally held a dominant position in the Chinese AI chip market, with a market share exceeding 90 per cent, Chinese companies, including Huawei, have been working on developing their versions of Nvidia's best-selling chips, such as the A100 and H100 graphics processing units (GPUs).

Huawei's Ascend AI chips are considered comparable to Nvidia's in terms of raw computing power, though they currently lag in performance. The limitation for Chinese firms was their reliance on Nvidia's chips and software ecosystem. However, US restrictions could alter this dynamic, creating an opportunity for Huawei to establish a stronger foothold. Reuters quoted Jiang Yifan, chief market analyst at Guotai Junan Securities, as saying, "This US move, in my opinion, is actually giving Huawei's Ascend chips a huge gift."

While this opportunity presents itself, challenges remain. Many cutting-edge AI projects are built with CUDA, a popular programming architecture pioneered by Nvidia, which has created a vast global ecosystem capable of training sophisticated AI models. Huawei's alternative, CANN, is more limited in this regard. To win over clients in China, Huawei must replicate the ecosystem Nvidia has developed, including facilitating the transfer of data and models to its platform. Intellectual property rights, with many held by US firms, further complicate the situation.

If Huawei succeeds in capturing Nvidia's market share, it could register another victory against US export controls. Over the past year, Huawei has shown signs of resilience against these restrictions by introducing advanced products, including a smartphone chip and advancements in chip design tools. The company is also positioning itself as a key provider of computing power for AI. Huawei's partners in China, such as iFlyTek, have been working with the Ascend 910 to train AI models, demonstrating the potential of Huawei's AI offerings.

As Huawei pushes towards self-sufficiency, President Xi Jinping's championed agenda; it is likely to find support in its endeavours. This situation represents a disruption to near-term supplies but a significant boost to China's long-term self-sufficiency goals. While Nvidia has held a dominant ecosystem, analysts believe that given time and a substantial customer base, domestic players could surmount these challenges.

Former US president Donald Trump divulged details about his private calls with world leaders to Mar-a-Lago member, say media reports published on Sunday. The news reports, published by The New York Times and 60 Minutes Australia talk about private recordings of Australian billionaire Anthony Pratt, who is a member of Trump's Florida resort. Pratt is a key prosecution witness in the classified documents case against Trump.

The recordings of Pratt, as reported by The New York Times and 60 Minutes Australia, reveal Pratt recalling his conversations with Trump as the then-president shared insider information about the conversations he had with leaders of Ukraine and Iraq. If Trump really shared such information with Pratt, it is likely to strengthen the classified documents case which focuses on Trump's casual handling of sensitive state information. Trump has denied allegations and pleaded not guilty to charges that put him in the dock for alleged mishandling of information.

In the recordings, Pratt allegedly offers a searing critique of Trump's personal ethics.

Pratt is among the key witnesses for the trial. He has already given an interview to special counsel Jack Smith, according to CNN. Special counsel Jack Smith has charged Trump with mishandling classified documents.

Trump told a Mar-a-Lago member about his conversations with world leaders: Reports

The U.S. is exercising caution. Amid the escalating Israel-Hamas war. Are Americans going to be a target? Amid the Israel-Hamas war & increasing anti-U.S. protests, the U.S. issued a worldwide caution for Americans travelling overseas.

Is there an increased security threat for overseas Americans amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war?

A recent Federal Reserve survey on financial stability may not be good news for the US economy. Persistent high inflation & losses in the commercial real estate market seem to be the top concerns of Americans. The latest version of the central bank's semiannual report finds that 75% of respondents cite these two issues as prominent near-term risks.

What concerns the average US citizen

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday (Oct 22) said that the ripple effects of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war are not entirely clear right now. His remarks came while he was addressing the closing plenary session on ‘Navigating a World on Fire’ at the Kautilya Economic Conclave - 2023, organised by the Institute of Economic Growth in association with the Ministry of Finance, in New Delhi.

"The ripple impact of what is taking place right now in the Middle East is still not entirely clear... In different regions, there are smaller happenings whose impact is not inconsequential... There is also the less formal version that is very pervasive, terrorism which has long been honed and practised as a tool of statecraft... Any expectation that conflicts and terrorism can be contained in their impact is no longer tenable. A big part of this is clearly economic, but do not underestimate the danger of metastasis when it comes to radicalism and extremism. No danger is too distant anymore," Jaishankar reportedly said.

He also touched upon the ongoing war in Ukraine by pointing out how some events can have far-reaching consequences "beyond the immediate geography."

In a world where there are traditional notions of US-China bipolarity, Dr. Jaishankar asserted that the United States and China are unlikely to create a new bipolar order as there are many "next-run powers" with "significant clout."

EAM Dr S Jaishankar said, "The unipolar world is a distant history. The bipolar world was even more distant in the bipolarity of the US-Soviet Union. And I don't think US China will really end up bipolar. I think there are too many, as I said, too many next-run powers with sufficient clout and autonomous activity and regions of their own dominance and privacy..."

"If you look today at what is happening in the Middle East, a lot of it is actually, in a sense, the activities are intrinsic to the Middle East... So the key regional players on regional situations are actually today going to be so dominant compared to the past that they're not going to leave that much space for global players or external players to come in. And I think you can see that happening in Africa as well," he added.

Jaishankar's address was not limited to discussing global challenges as he also spoke of the progress made over the years and the continuous emergence of new issues.

'Ripple effects' of Israel-Hamas war not entirely clear now: Jaishankar at Kautilya Economic Conclave 2023

South Korea held a joint aerial exercise with Japan and the United States on Sunday (October 22) said South Korean military. The air drill has marked first such collaboration between the three countries. The drill was aimed at expanding the countries' response capabilities against threat posed by North Korea, said South Korean air force in a statement.

The drill involved a US B-52 bomber along with fighter jets of the three countries.

The US bomber landed at South Korean airbase on Tuesday following a flyover at country's largest defence exhibition. B-52 bombers fly at sub-sonic speed but can travel more than 8800 miles without any need of refuelling. The bomber can reach an altitude of 50,000 feet.

The South Korean Air Force said that the trilateral exercise took place south of the Korean peninsula where South Korea and Japan's Air Defence Identification Zones overlap.

North Korea considers all such exercises as rehearsals for an invasion against it and repeatedly warns of "overwhelming" action in response.

North Korea baulks at Washington's deployment of long-range military assets and in 2017 threatened to "shoot down" US strategic bombers even outside North Korean airspace.

The B-52 bomber's arrival came on the heels of a port call by USA's nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. This elicited angry reactions from Pyongyang.

The bomber also landed ahead of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's two-day visit to Pyongyang, as the UN-sanctioned neighbours and historic allies tighten ties.

Leaders of Japan, South Korea and the United States agreed to carry out annual, multi-domain, trilateral exercises earlier this year. At the Camp David summit in August, the three countries also agreed to set up a hotline for crisis communication.

The aerial drills are the latest effort by the US and its allies in Asia to firm up ties in the face of tensions with North Korea and rising Chinese influence in the region.

Sunday also saw a joint anti-submarine exercise called Silent Shark, said South Korean navy.

It is believed that Russia is interested in buying North Korean ammunition. North Korea wants Russia help to develop its missile programme which often draws flak from the West, particularly the US.
