Scientists have expressed hope of finding more about the dark side of the cosmos after a European probe blasts off into space in a few weeks. 
 
The two most baffling components of the universe – dark matter and dark energy – will be investigated by the Euclid mission, worth €1 billion ($1.10bn). 
 
Both the dark matter and dark energy of the universe remain invisible to astronomers, hence they have been able to infer their existence only by estimating their influence on the behaviour of galaxies and stars. 
 
“We cannot say we understand the universe if the nature of these dark components remains a mystery,” stated astrophysicist Prof Andy Taylor of Edinburgh University, while speaking to The Guardian.&nbsp;“That is why Euclid is so important,” he added.

The professor stated that the scientists in the UK had played an important role in building and designing the probe. “We thought what would be the biggest, most fundamentally important project we could do? The answer was Euclid, which has now been designed, built and is ready for launch,” Taylor said, as reported by&nbsp;The Guardian.&nbsp;

<h2 lang="en-US">Euclid mission to launch on July 1</h2>

Last year, Euclid was planned to be launched on a Russian Soyuz rocket. However, after Russia invaded Ukraine, the European Space Agency called off its co-operation with the Russian space agency Roscosmos and then signed a deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX company to use Falcon 9 rocket. 
 
Euclid, which will be launched on July 1, will need a moth to cross the solar system to reach its destination which is 150 million km from Earth, at a position called the second Lagrange point. From this point, the craft will be able to look into the deep space with the Earth, moon and sun behind it. Then, the two-tonne spacecraft will start its survey of the heavens. 
 
“Euclid has the resolving power of the Hubble space telescope but will be able to survey a third of the night sky at the same time, so it will give us an incredibly detailed map of the heavens,” said astronomer Stephen Wilkins, of Sussex University, speaking to&nbsp;The Guardian.

“Gravitational lensing produced by dark matter will tell us a great deal about what it is made of,” stated Prof Mathilde Jouzac of Durham University, while speaking to The Guardian.&nbsp; 
 
“It may be that dark matter is made up of light particles. If so, they will produce one kind of lensing. On the other hand, if dark matter is made of very large particles, that will produce a different set of lensing. This information will then help direct the search for dark matter particles on Earth,” he added.&nbsp;

Mysteries of universe to be revealed by Euclid telescope, say scientists

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has shared a mesmerising and never-before-seen&nbsp;picture&nbsp;showing more than 45,000 galaxies in one frame. The picture was of a portion of the sky known as GOODS-Sout.&nbsp;

James Webb Space Telescope captured the image as part of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey programme.

As per the space agency, around 32 days of the telescope time will be devoted to the JADES programme to uncover and characterise distant and faint galaxies as astronomers make efforts to understand how the first stars and galaxies were formed.&nbsp;

Although the data is still pouring in, hundreds of galaxies have already been discovered that existed when the universe had not completed 600 million years. Galaxies, which were sparkling along with a number of young, hot stars, have also been identified by the team.

Co-lead of the JADES programme and professor at the University of Arizona in Tucson Marcia Rieke said, "With JADES, we want to answer a lot of questions, like: How did the earliest galaxies assemble themselves? How fast did they form stars? Why do some galaxies stop forming stars?"

The part of the sky was previously observed by the Hubble telescope.&nbsp;

University of Texas' Ryan Endsley headed the investigation into galaxies which existed 500 to 850 million years after the big bang occurred.&nbsp;

"For hundreds of millions of years after the big bang, the universe was filled with a gaseous fog that made it opaque to energetic light. By one billion years after the big bang, the fog had cleared and the universe became transparent, a process known as reionisation. Scientists have debated whether active, supermassive black holes or galaxies full of hot, young stars were the primary cause of reionisation," the space agency explained.&nbsp;

The researchers found evidence of young galaxies going through rapid star formation interspersed with short periods where fewer stars formed.&nbsp;

“Almost every single galaxy that we are finding shows these unusually strong emission line signatures indicating intense recent star formation. These early galaxies were very good at creating hot, massive stars,” stated Ryan Endsley of the University of Texas, who headed the investigation.

“Previously, the earliest galaxies we could see just looked like little smudges. And yet those smudges represent millions or even billions of stars at the beginning of the universe. Now, we can see that some of them are actually extended objects with visible structures. We can see groupings of stars being born only a few hundred million years after the beginning of time,” stated Kevin Hainline of the University of Arizona, in a statement.&nbsp;

"We're finding star formation in the early universe is much more complicated than we thought," Rieke stated.&nbsp;

NASA's James Webb captures more than 45,000 galaxies in one frame as it traces the birth of the universe

The European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launch Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) on Friday (April 14). The launch took place from ESA spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. An Ariane 5 rocket lifted-off carrying JUICE probe at 9:14 am local time (1214 GMT). The path ahead is long and winding. The space probe will be in Jupiter's orbit by July 2031. Jupiter is 628 million kilometre away from our home planet.&nbsp;

JUICE will make detailed observations of the giant gas planet and its three large ocean-bearing moons – Ganymede, Callisto and Europa – with remote sensing, geophysical and in situ instruments. <h2>What is JUICE's mission?</h2>

Finding aliens! Quite literally.

We may be less than a decade away from finding signs of life (or life itself) in our solar system! Finding alien life has been a scientific pre-occupation for us for decades. The question, 'Are we are alone in the Universe?' has been on our mind for a long time. To find the answer, we have applied our minds and focussed our powerful lenses which have been scanning distant corners or deep space for decades. Our giant radio receptors are ever alert to catch a transmission from an alien civilisation. We have also sent space probes (Voyager 1 and 2) packed with information in hopes that someday aliens will find them and come to know about us.

But the answer may be closer to home than we think. Alien life may be present in our Solar System itself.

<h2>Where can aliens be in our Solar System?</h2>

There are several candidates. Jupiter, the biggest planet in our solar system has several satellites which have had scientists interested. Europa, in particular has been in focus.

Europa is an icy world. The surface of the planet is covered by extremely thick ice sheets. Ice is lighter than water, so wherever there's ice, there is a possibility of water underneath.

Scientist think that Europa has oceans of liquid water under its massive ice sheets. And we know from our own planet that water means life.&nbsp;

In theory at least, it is possible that Europa harbours life in liquid oceans below the surface. This may be a downer for those of us expecting insect like aliens with antennas on their head to exist in space. But even if we find definitive proof of sea creatures swimming in Europa's oceans, wouldn't it be insanely fantastic discovery?

In addition to Europa, JUICE will study Ganymede and Callisto, two more satellites of Jupiter.&nbsp;

<h2>How will JUICE search for&nbsp;life?</h2>

Whenever we talk of life under Europa's ice sheets, first image that comes to mind is that of a human-made machine dutifully drilling the ice. This may sound easy enough until we know that Europa's ice sheets are thought to be between 16 and 24 kilometres thick!

Drilling to such depths is hard enough task on Earth, forget doing it on a frozen world millions of kilometres away. Logistics will be a major problem.&nbsp;

So how will JUICE manage?

It will make remote observations. But this will not be just clicking a random picture from the orbit. JUICE has 10 state-of-the-art scientific instruments onboard. It's high resolution mapping of the surface at different wavelengths will tell us about composition of the ice at the surface.&nbsp;

JUICE will also look for biological signatures, that it, chemicals that form as a result of various biological processes. If such chemicals are found, it will boost the possibility of existence of life on Europa.

JUICE is not expected to actually find extraterrestrial life. It definitely won't drop a fishing net to catch some Europan salmon. But its readings and observations will enable us to assess habitability of the satellite.

<h2>Why is JUICE taking 8 years to reach Jupiter?</h2>

JUICE launch on April 14 doesn't give it a straight highway ticket from Earth to Jupiter. The space probe is taking a long-winding route that'll see it taking 'gravity assists' from Earth, Moon, and Venus.

A 'gravity assist' is a technique by which a spacecraft takes help of gravitational field of a planet to get a speed boost. For gravity assist, the spacecraft needs to pass through the planet's gravitational field at a carefully calibrated exact point in order to get a 'slingshot effect'. Smallest of the mistakes during this manoeuvre results in the spacecraft getting pulled towards the planet and getting destroyed in an unfortunate crash.

"By the time the first solar orbit is complete, Earth has caught up with JUICE and the first gravity-assist manoeuvre can be performed. At this point, the spacecraft is deflected towards Venus and it falls in the direction of the Sun, increasing speed...After passing Venus, JUICE makes subsequent flybys of Earth, Mars...and Earth again before its rendezvous with Jupiter in October 2029," says the European Space Agency on its website.

"Very distant galaxies are real mines of information about the past and future evolution of our universe," said First Author Marika Giulietti. She was quoted by EurekaAlert.

"However, studying them is very challenging. They are very compact and therefore difficult to observe. Also, because of the distance, we receive very weak light from them. The cause of this obscuration is the massive presence of interstellar dust, which intercepts visible light from young stars, makes it difficult to detect with optical instruments, and re-emits it at greater wavelengths where it can be observed only with powerful interferometers in the (sub-)millimeter and radio wavebands."

"In this way, large celestial bodies act as a kind of enormous cosmic lens that makes the 'background' galaxies appear larger and brighter, allowing them to be identified and studied." Over the past decade, many observation programmes have been carried out with this approach. "About a hundred have been discovered so far, but there could be many more."

However, China has now developed a space telescope that can do a wider and deeper x-ray of the universe.

The nation successfully tested the world's first "lobster eye" space telescope that will be able to capture x-ray images of the universe with unprecedented efficiency.

As per the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the device called Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy or LEIA has successfully clicked high-quality images of X-ray sources of the centre of our galaxy, the Magellanic Clouds and the Scorpius constellation. The achievement was reported in the peer-reviewed journal The Astrophysical Journal Letters last week.

China develops 'lobster eye' telescope to scan the murky depths of the universe

A 'cosmic burp' has drawn scientists' attention. Not that such cosmic burps are uncommon in the Universe, but this one's a bit different.&nbsp;

Black holes devour everything that comes within their gravitational grip. A black hole can even gobble up a star. When a star ventures too close to a black hole, it undergoes 'spagettification', that is, it is stretched vertically and compressed horizontally. The star is then gobbled up by the black hole bit by bit. Whatever stellar material the black hole is unable to eat up is&nbsp;thrown out in the Universe. This is called a cosmic burp.

So what's different about the one in question?

A black hole 665 million light years away from Earth ate up a star in 2018. A cosmic burp usually occurs close to eating up of the star. But this black hole ate the star in 2018, and gave a burp in 2021.&nbsp;

What is the reason behind it? We don't know it yet.

'This caught us completely by surprise,' said Yvette Cendes, a research associate at the Center for Astrophysics and lead author on the study of this cosmic burp.&nbsp;

'No one has ever seen anything like this before.'

This study has been published in the Astrophysical Journal.

The early days of the universe is an extremely popular topic among researchers and they have now turned towards the Small Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, to decode more of its secrets. According to scientists, it has the same composition as Milky Way and that makes it perfect for a comparative study to understand the early days of our universe.

The Hubble Space Telescope found a number of young stars in the middle of a massive star cluster called NGC 346, according to Live Science. Considering the formation of new stars, the scientists concluded that the process is quite similar to how celestial bodies were formed in the Milky Way.

The conclusion was supported by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope.

The newly formed or relatively young stars were found to be spiralling in the middle of the galaxy and the outer arm of the spiral was found to be the perfect birthing place for star formation.

The observations recorded from NGC 346 will now be applied in the studies regarding the Milky Way and it can tell us a lot about how the universe looked around 2 to 3 billion years ago.

The scientific community got a scare after a small meteoroid struck one of the mirrors of the telescopes in May. NASA has said that this created a small but noticeable effect on the data coming from the telescope. Realignment of &nbsp;the mirror was carried out.

In spite of the micro-meteoroid impact, NASA said the space telescope was “performing at a level that exceeds all mission requirements.”

This means that we may be in for a treat once first pictures from the telescope are released!

These nomad worlds may be habitable even as they don’t draw energy from a star. It can happen if they have subsurface oceans, atmospheres with hydrogen to preserve it and residual core heat, which can provide energy for some period of time. &nbsp;

As per Romanovskaya's hypothesis, rogue planets have advantages over spaceships as they have own resources and habitats and don’t need artificial gravity. They could also prove to be an apt escape for the inhabitants of an aging system. &nbsp;

According to NASA, the data provided by the Hubble Space Telescope shows that the rate of expansion has become much quicker in comparison to the expected rate. But NASA was not able to provide a concrete reason behind the discrepancy and went on to call it “something weird”.

“You are getting the most precise measure of the expansion rate for the universe from the gold standard of telescopes and cosmic mile markers,” said Adam Riess of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) and the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, in a statement.

Riess is currently leading a team of scientists who have published a paper regarding the data collected from the Hubble Space Telescope and it was seen that other galaxies are moving away quite fast from ours – showing a clear increase in the rate at which the universe is expanding.

The Hubble telescope has been gathering data for the last 30 years and it shows that although it was predicted that the rate of expansion will be 67.5 kilometers per second per megaparsec with a margin of error of 0.5, the current rate of expansion is somewhere around 73.

Two researchers from the University of Nottingham have suggested that the smaller galaxies are creating ‘invisible walls’ out of a new class of particles called symmetrons and that is the maintaining the core structure of all the massive bodies existing in the universe. The study is mainly based on dark matter, but no previous study suggests this kind of behaviour from any dark matter.

The study states that the smaller galaxies are reacting to the gravitational pull of the bigger galaxies and as a result, that allows them to stay in a proper orbit. However, the new observations in the study can finally answer the question of why they sometimes create unusual orbits for themselves.

The research, published in Physical Review Letters, could redefine the kinds of particles that were abundant in the early universe.

According to the Big Bang model, the universe expanded rapidly from a highly compressed primordial state, which resulted in a significant decrease in density and temperature.

Soon afterward, the dominance of matter over antimatter (as observed today) may have been established by processes that also predict proton decay. During this stage, many types of elementary particles may have been present. After a few seconds, the universe cooled enough to allow the formation of certain nuclei.

The theory predicts that definite amounts of hydrogen, helium and lithium were produced. Their abundances agree with what is observed today. About a million years later the universe was sufficiently cool for atoms to form.

“This is just the start of the story,” says lead author Yen-Jie Lee, the Class of 1958 Career Development Associate Professor of Physics at MIT.

“We’ve shown we can find a signal. In the next few years we want to use the quark-gluon plasma to probe the X particle’s internal structure, which could change our view of what kind of material the universe should produce.”

“For years we had thought that for some reason, nature had chosen to produce particles made only from two or three quarks,” Lee says.

“Theoretically speaking, there are so many quarks and gluons in the plasma that the production of X particles should be enhanced,” Lee says. “But people thought it would be too difficult to search for them because there are so many other particles produced in this quark soup.”

Although the theory of cosmic inflation received a great deal of experimental support, the failure to find the gravitational waves it predicted caused many cosmologists to hold off endorsing it.

Because cosmic inflation was powered by quantum effects, with the universe springing from a volume smaller than a subatomic particle, primordial gravitational waves were also created by quantum processes, cosmologists believe. If so, then by scrutinizing the gravitational waves that pervade today’s cosmos, scientists might finally show that all four forces of nature arise from a single uber-force, achieving Einstein’s dream.

MIT postdoc Jing Wang said, “We managed to lower the background by orders of magnitude to see the signal.”

“Currently our data is consistent with both because we don’t have a enough statistics yet. In next few years we’ll take much more data so we can separate these two scenarios,” Lee says. “That will broaden our view of the kinds of particles that were produced abundantly in the early universe.”

Waves caused by black holes consuming neutron stars have also been seen.&nbsp;

Astronomers may be able to detect gravitational waves from stars when they explode into supernovae in the future.

Scientists were able to establish how the mergers were produced by analysing specific aspects of the mergers.

"Information from the black hole masses and spins … give us a lot of information about how the structure of the universe formed," said astrophysicist Susan Scott of the Australian National University and a member of the international Advanced LIGO team.

Some of the latest discoveries are still a mystery.

Although he was open about possibility of life in space and even termed it as NASA's mission. He was also mindful of the fact that along with searching for intelligent life we should also be alert about damage we are causing to our own planet.

“I’ll tell you what that makes me think. I’d better be a better steward of what we have, because we’re messing it up, and we’re messing it up just the way we’re treating each other,” he said. “So I know what my mission is, to be a better steward of this planet and be a better citizen of planet Earth.”

Now, Japanese astronomers have developed an astounding technique to measure the universe. Using artificial intelligence, scientists were able to remove noise in astronomical data which is&nbsp;caused by random variations in the shapes of galaxies.

What did the scientists do?

Scientists used supercomputer simulations and tested large mock data before performing the same on real data from space. After extensive testing, scientists used the tool on data derived from Japan’s Subaru Telescope.&nbsp;

To their surprise, it worked! The results that followed remained largely in sync with&nbsp;the currently accepted models of the universe. If employed on a bigger scale, the tool could help scientists analyse expansive data from astronomical surveys.

Current methods cannot effectively get rid of the noise which pervades all data from space. To avoid interference from noise data, the team used the world’s most advanced astronomy supercomputer called “ATERUI II”.&nbsp;

Using real data from the Subaru Telescope, they generated 25,000 mock galaxy catalogues.

What's causing data distortion?

All data from space can be distorted by the gravity of what’s in the foreground eclipsing its background. This is called gravitational lensing. Measurements of such lensing is used to better understand the universe. Essentially, a galaxy directly visible to us could be manipulating data about what lies behind it.

But it’s difficult to differentiate oddly-looking galaxies from distorting ones that manipulate data. It’s called “shape noise” and regularly gets in the way of understanding the universe.

Based on these understandings, scientists added noise to the artificial data sets and trained AI to recover lensing data from the mock data. The AI was able to highlight previously unobservable details from this data.

Building on this, scientists used the AI model on the real world, covering 21 square degrees of the sky. They found that the details registered about the foreground were actually consistent with existing knowledge about the cosmos.
