The Seattle Police Officers' Guild, on Friday (September 15), defended its official who made insensitive remarks about Indian-origin student Jaahnavi Kandula earlier this year, saying that some of the videos of police that have been shared, do not fairly elucidate the context of the story.

"The video captures only one side of the conversation. There is much more detail and nuance that has not been made public yet," the Seattle Police Officers Guild said in a statement.

It also released a letter written by its officer Auderer in which the latter said that he intended the comment as a mockery of lawyers.

In the letter dated August 3 to the Office of Police Accountability, Auderer said he laughed at the ridiculousness of how these incidents are litigated and the ridiculousness of how he has watched these incidents play out as two parties bargain over a tragedy, as per news agency PTI reports.

"At the time I believed the conversation was private and not being recorded. The conversation was also not within the course of my duties," he wrote in his letter to Gino Betts, director Office of Police Accountability. &nbsp;

<h2>University to&nbsp;award Kandula her degree posthumously</h2>

The Northeastern University released a statement saying that it&nbsp;will award Kandula her degree posthumously.

Chancellor of the University, Kenneth W Henderson made the announcement and reaffirmed that the probes that have been initiated in the incident will bring a measure of justice and accountability.

“The university plans to award Jaahnavi her degree posthumously and present it to her family,” the university stated on its Facebook page.

The university further added that the friends and family members of Jaanhavi are enduring the “additional pain” of new developments related to this tragedy. It also called the remarks by the Seattle police officer “callous and insensitive”.

“We also recognize that our Indian student community, across all Northeastern campuses, has been especially impacted by this tragedy and its aftermath. We stand in solidarity with you and have every expectation that the ongoing investigations will bring a measure of justice and accountability,” the statement read.

It also recalled the time when the Seattle campus community joined together in a surveillance of remembrance and solidarity, after the incident earlier this year.

It then stated that it would be convoking campus gatherings to allow the community to join together in harmony next week.

Kandula hailed from Andhra Pradesh and was pursuing a master’s degree from the Northeastern University campus in South Lake Union. She was set to graduate in the month of December this year.

The 23-year-old student was hit by an overspeeding police vehicle earlier in January this year. The police car was&nbsp;cruising at a speed of 120 mph

A video released by the Seattle Police Department on Monday (September 11) showed a police officer laughing and making insensitive comments&nbsp;about the accident.

In the video, which has now gone viral on social media, Seattle Police Officers' Guild Vice President Daniel Auderer can be heard saying, "She is dead" before bursting out into laughter and referring to Kandula as "a regular person".

Towards the end, the officer says, "She was 26 anyway, she had limited value", getting her age wrong.

After India raised the issue, senior officials in the Biden administration have reportedly assured that prompt action would be taken against the ones involved.

Two cosmonauts from Russia and an American astronaut, on Friday (September 15), rocketed toward the International Space Station, marking the first time Moscow launched astronauts to an orbiting outpost in almost a year.

The launch also came amid heightened tensions between the United States and Russia over the Ukraine war.

Soyuz MS-24 spacecraft lifted off from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, at 11:44 am ET, with Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub and NASA astronaut Loral O'Hara on board.

As per reports, the crew was expected to dock at the ISS three hours later.

Kononenko, while hinting at the tensions between Washington and Moscow during a pre-flight press conference that took place on Thursday (September 14), said that "unlike on earth" cosmonauts and astronauts took care of each other in space.

"We hear each other there, and we understand each other, and we are very sensitive to our relationships," he said. "We always take care of each other."

O'Hara applauded the station's "legacy" and said it had been bringing the countries together.

"I'm excited to get on board and see the crewmates who are waiting for us," she added.

Kononenko, 59, and Chub, 39, are scheduled to spend a year on the ISS, while O'Hara, 40, is to spend six months aboard. It was the first mission to space for both O'Hara and Chub.

US President Joe Biden, on Friday (September 15), said that the United States would remain committed to supporting Iranians, a year after Mahsa Amini's death triggered massive demonstrations, as Washington revealed fresh sanctions against "egregious" rights abusers.

Biden released a statement saying, "Today—as we remember Mahsa’s tragic death—we reaffirm our commitment to the courageous people of Iran who are carrying on her mission. They are inspiring the world with their resilience and resolve. And together with our allies and partners, we stand with them."

"Iranians alone will determine the fate of their country, but, the United States remains committed to standing with them, including providing tools to support Iranians' ability to advocate for their own future," Biden added.

He then said that the United States was "announcing additional sanctions targeting some of Iran's most egregious human rights abusers" to mark Mahsa Amini's death anniversary.

<h2>US, UK issue sanctions</h2>

The United States and Britain imposed sanctions on Iran on Friday (September 15) ahead of Amini's death anniversary.

"Mahsa’s tragic and senseless death in the custody of Iran’s so-called 'Morality Police' sparked demonstrations across Iran that were met with unspeakable violence, mass arrests, systemic internet disruptions and censorship by the Iranian regime," U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

"We will continue to take appropriate action, alongside our international partners, to hold accountable those who suppress Iranians’ exercise of human rights," he said, adding that Canada, Australia, and other partners were also imposing sanctions this week.

In a separate statement, the US Treasury Department said that it imposed sanctions on more than two dozen people and entities, that it said were linked to Iran's "violent suppression" of protests in the wake of Amini's death and its crackdown on dissenting voices and restrictions on the internet.

The department said that the action targets 29 people and groups, including 18 key members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran's Law Enforcement Forces (LEF), as well as the head of Iran's prison organisations. They also target officials linked to Iran's internet blockade and several media outlets.

The sanctions target LEF spokesperson Saeed Montazerolmehdi, multiple LEF and IRGC commanders, and Iran’s Prisons Organization chief Gholamali Mohammadi.

Douran Software Technologies CEO Alireza Abedinejad as well as state-controlled media organizations Press TV, Tasnim News Agency and Fars News were also among the ones sanctioned.

"The United States ... will continue to take collective action against those who suppress Iranians’ exercise of their human rights," the Treasury's Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian Nelson, said in the statement.

On the other hand, the UK separately announced its sanctions that targeted senior Iranian decision-makers implementing Tehran's compulsory hijab law, including Iran's minister for culture and Islamic guidance, his deputy, the mayor of Tehran and an Iranian police spokesman.

Amini died last year on September 16, at the age of 22, after she was arrested in Tehran for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic's strict dress code for women.

US imposes new sanctions on Iran, hails protesters a year after Mahsa Amini's death

A new, rather alarming, record has been set by the United States, for the number of weather-related disasters in a year that cost millions of dollars. These disasters included the Hawaii fires in August, flooding in California in the spring, and Hurricane Idalia which devastated Florida last month.&nbsp;

Official data showed on Monday (September 11) that so far, the US was struck by a record-breaking 23 weather and climate disasters between January and August and the losses exceeded $1 billion in each case.&nbsp;

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said in its report that the tally for 2023 has already exceeded the previous record of 22 such events in 2020. Notably, four months remain in the year.&nbsp;

NOAA said that together, the disasters "caused 253 direct and indirect fatalities and produced more than $57.6 billion in damages".&nbsp;

It added that two more potential billion-dollar events, Tropical Storm Hilary on the West Coast and the drought affecting the South and Midwest, are currently being investigated.&nbsp;

As quoted by the news agency AFP, Rachel Cleetus, who is the policy director of the climate and energy program at the Union of Concerned Scientists, said: "These record-breaking numbers, during a year that is on track to be one of the hottest ever, are sobering and the latest confirmation of a worsening trend in costly disasters, many of which bear the undeniable fingerprints of climate change."&nbsp;

NOAA began tracking these events in 1980, and since then, the US has sustained 371 billion-dollar events (adjusted for inflation). The annual average between 2018-2022 has been 18.0 events, compared to 8.1 events between 1980-2022.&nbsp;

The report said that the 23 events included 18 severe weather events, two flooding events, one tropical cyclone (Hurricane Idalia), one wildfire event, and one winter storm event.&nbsp;

According to the report, these events caused 253 direct and indirect fatalities and produced more than $57.6 billion in damages (Consumer Price Index (CPI)-adjusted).&nbsp;

According to NOAA, the number and cost of disasters have increased over time and multiple factors, including climate change, construction, etc, are behind the increase.&nbsp;

NOAA said: "Vulnerability is especially high where building codes are insufficient for reducing damage from extreme events. Climate change is also playing a role in the increasing frequency of some types of extreme weather that lead to billion-dollar disasters— most notably the rise in vulnerability to drought, lengthening wildfire seasons in the Western states, and the potential for extremely heavy rainfall becoming more common in the eastern states."&nbsp;

US hit by record number of billion-dollar disasters between January and August of 2023

The people of the United States on Monday (September 11) remembered the horrific terror attack of 9/11 on its anniversary with personal tributes, tolling bells, and tears, as the observances were held from ground zero to small towns.

Huge crowds gathered at firehouses, memorials, campuses, city halls and elsewhere to observe the 22nd anniversary of the deadliest terror attack on American soil.

“For those of us who lost people on that day, that day is still happening. Everybody else moves on. And you find a way to go forward, but that day is always happening for you,” said Edward Edelman, after he reached ground zero to pay tributes to his slain brother-in-law Daniel McGinley.

US President Joe Biden, speaking at a&nbsp;US military base in Anchorage, Alaska after returning from a trip to India, Vietnam said:&nbsp;"We must never lose our sense of national unity, so let that be the common cause of our time."&nbsp;

He added&nbsp;that "terrorism, including political and ideological violence, is the opposite of all we stand for as a nation".

US President Joe Biden, speaking at a US military base in Anchorage, Alaska after returning from a trip to India, Vietnam said: "We must never lose our sense of national unity, so let that be the common cause of our time." He added that "terrorism, including political and ideological violence, is the opposite of all we stand for as a nation". Today, we remember the 2,977 precious lives stolen from us on 9/11 and reflect on all that was lost in the fire and ash that September morning. The American story itself changed on this day 22 years ago. But what could not — and will not — change is the character of this nation. pic.twitter.com/qYRfyquQxV — President Biden (@POTUS) September 11, 2023 × ALSO READ | 9/11 attacks 22nd anniversary: DNA analysis helps identify two victims decades after the tragedy Almost 3,000 people lost their lives after hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field in New York, in a terror attack which gave new shape to America's foreign policy and the underlying domestic fears. On that day, “we were one country, one nation, one people, just like it should be. That was the feeling — that everyone came together and did what we could, where we were at, to try to help,” stated Eddie Ferguson, the fire-rescue chief in Virginia’s Goochland County. Vice President Harris honours victims at Memorial Plaza US Vice President Kamala Harris flew to New York City in Air Force Two where she honoured the victims of the 9/11 at the National September 11 Memorial Plaza, while US President Joe Biden was scheduled to commemorate at a military base in Anchorage, Alaska. The president is set to deliver remarks to first responders, service members, and their families at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, which is generally used as Air Force One's refuelling stop on return journeys. Earlier in the day, Biden visited the John Sidney McCain III Memorial in Hanoi and honoured the late US senator and war veteran. Tolling bells, tributes and tears: US marks 22 years since 9/11

United States President Joe Biden went for a hearty handshake to greet Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) at the G20 Leaders' Summit in New Delhi on Saturday (Sep 9),&nbsp; after being questioned last year for fist-bumping the crown prince.

Biden warmly greeted the crown prince and both appeared together at the G20 summit along with the other leaders where they had gathered to announce a plan to build a rail and shipping corridor that would link India with the Middle East and Europe.

As the announcement wrapped up, Biden smiled and publicly shook hands with the crown prince.

For the awkward encounter, Biden was also denounced by human rights activists, who weren't happy with his decision to meet the Saudi prince in the first place.

MBS has over the years been harshly condemned for constantly violating human rights. He has also been accused of being behind the killing of US-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was a tough critic of the kingdom’s ruling family.

US President Biden leaves to attend G20 summit in India

The United States is shifting some of its troops from a base in Niamey, the capital city of Niger to another place in the Agadez area, said the Pentagon on Thursday. In Niger, the rebel officers came to power in a July coup.

Washington's 1,100 military personnel are present in Niger. However, the Defence Department said that the officer was largely present on bases while curtailing activities like joint training after Niger's military takeover,

The United States "is repositioning some of our personnel and some of our assets from Air Base 101 in Niamey to Air Base 201 in Agadez," said Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, while speaking to journalists.

"There's no immediate threat to US personnel or violence on the ground," she stated while describing the step as a "precautionary measure." A "small group" of personnel are still going to remain at Air Base 101 following the step which is ongoing currently, said Singh.

She further stated that "some non-essential personnel and contractors" had departed previously from the country. Niger was the key base for both French and American anti-militant operations, and the repositioning of US troops comes after an official of the French defence ministry said that Niger and Paris have been holding talks on withdrawing "elements", which mark its presence, there.

<h2>Move not linked to&nbsp;French actions</h2>

For days, rallies were organised in Niger which appealed to the former colonial ruler of the country, France, to remove its forces. Meanwhile, earlier this week, military-appointed Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine said that "contacts" were underway to ensure a "very swift" departure for troops in Paris.

However, Singh stated that there is "no tie" between "what the French military is doing right now” and the move of the United States. On July 26, Niger's President Mohamed Bazoum was dethroned by some members of his guard and later was detained by coup leaders, along with his family.

Niger has been facing a hard reaction from the West African bloc ECOWAS after a number of coups in the region, and the latter has been threatening to use force for restoring civilian rule.

Troops also took power in Burkina Faso and Mali, where similar to Niger, losses continued to surge in the armed forces amid the long-running militant insurgency.

Speaking about past comments of the US, Singh said that they are hopeful that Niger will be able to find a negotiated solution to the situation. "We are hopeful that diplomatic talks will continue and that the situation in Niger will be resolved diplomatically," she stated.

US moves out troops, conducts 'precautionary' repositioning of forces in Niger

India has lifted additional duties on approximately half a dozen American products, such as chickpeas, lentils and apples, which were levied in the year 2019 in response to the United States' decision to raise tariffs on certain steel and aluminum products.

The Indian Finance Ministry announced the removal of the duties on the products through a notification dated September 5. The products included chickpeas, lentils (Masur), apples, walnuts in shells and almonds fresh or dried, as well as almond shelled.

This move comes before United States President Joe Biden's arrival in India for the G20 Summit. The event on September 9-10 would be preceded by Biden's bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During the Indian prime minister's state visit to the United States in June, both countries agreed to call off six WTO (World Trade Organization) disputes and also eliminate the retaliatory tariffs on certain US products.

As part of the agreement, India will be doing away with additional duty on chickpeas (10 per cent), lentils (20 per cent), almonds fresh or dried (Rs 7 per kg), almonds shelled (Rs 20 per kg), walnuts (20 per cent), and apples fresh (20 per cent).

In July, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha stated that the government has determined to withdraw retaliatory customs duties on the import of almonds (fresh or dried, in shell), walnuts, chickpeas, lentils, apples, medical diagnostic reagents, and boric acid.&nbsp;

The removal of retaliatory tariffs or cuts in import duty with the United States did not result in a loss to India, she had said.

The US is the largest trading partner of India. In 2022-23, the bilateral goods trade increased to USD 128.8 billion as against USD 119.5 billion in 2021-22.

The Pentagon on Wednesday (September 6) announced that the United States will provide Ukraine with depleted uranium tank ammunition, as part of a $175 million aid package.

In a statement, the Pentagon said that the 120mm rounds will be for the US M1 Abrams, as it referred to the tanks that Washington has provided to provide to Kyiv. The uranium's density, which is around 1.7 times that of lead, helps the ammunition punch through heavy armour.

However, it is controversial to provide depleted uranium as it has generally been associated with health hazards such as birth defects and cancer in past conflicts, although the munitions have never been definitively proven to be the cause of such health issues.

North Korea is likely to face consequences for providing weapons to Russia in its war against Ukraine, warned a top White House official on Tuesday, amid reports of Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un holding weapon talks.

"They will pay a price for this in the international community," said US President Joe Biden's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, while speaking to the reporters.

As per reports, sanctions-hit Russia has been hoping to get more military supplies from its ally to strengthen its forces as a highly scrutinised counteroffensive was pushed by Kyiv to take back its territory.

He added that weapons can be taken from North Korea and used by Russia to attack food supplies and heating infrastructure as&nbsp;winter approaches to "try to conquer territory that belongs to another sovereign nation".

"This is not going to reflect well on North Korea and they will pay a price for this in the international community," he stated. Sullivan said that it "says a lot that Russia is having to turn to a country like North Korea."

The coup leaders of Niger barred NGOs, UN agencies and international organisations from working in military "operation zones", said the interior ministry on Thursday (August 31).

The ministry, without specifying the affected regions, broadcasted the statement on national radio which read, "Due to the current security situation and operational commitment of the Nigerien armed forces, the ministry informs international organisations, national and international NGOs and UN agencies present in Niger that all activities and or movements in the zones of operations are temporarily suspended.”

Tinubu stated that civilian rule had returned in Nigeria after a nine-month transition period in 1999 which was instituted by former military head of state General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who was also leading delegations to meet the Niger junta.

"The UK condemns the unconstitutional military takeover of power in Gabon and calls for the restoration of constitutional government. We acknowledge concerns raised regarding the recent electoral process, including restrictions on media freedom," Britain's foreign ministry said in a statement. Germany also denounced the coup while expressing concerns over the polls. "It is not up to the military to intervene by force in the political process. US says 'deeply concerned' by events in Gabon, urges military to 'preserve civilian rule'

“We are in a war zone…crime is out of control.” So said a prominent member of the District Council that runs the District of Columbia, as the US&nbsp;capital of Washington is officially known.

Trayon White, one of the 13 members of the policy-making Council, was speaking to a crowd of angry residents after a hot August weekend during which six people were shot dead in different parts of the city. White called for the deployment of the National Guard to stem the worst wave of violence in 20 years.

The call for military help prompted residents to ponder a question: Is Washington sliding back to the bad old days of the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the city was routinely described as America's “murder capital"?

By 1989, the annual murder rate rose above 400 and by 1991, it stood at 482. Relative to 100,000 inhabitants, no major American city was worse.

The death toll so far this year is modest in comparison, although it reached a number not seen in two decades by the end of August -- 166. But while violence has been surging in Washington, criminologists are reporting that murder rates have been dropping in dozens of other major cities, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Baltimore.

Why the US&nbsp;capital is lagging behind the trend is a question experts have yet to figure out. But there is consensus that the city is unlikely to sink back to the bad old days of the “murder capital.” One of the main drivers then was the fast-spreading use of crack cocaine and its dealers fighting for market share.

The crack epidemic began to fade in the mid-1990s. Who is behind the killings now? Last year, a study by the National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform and the Metropolitan Police Department found that a small group of people were responsible for 60 to 70 per cent of all gun violence in the city.

The study pointed to street gangs whose members have criminal records and to people who have been victims of gun violence or were, in some way, connected to a recent shooting. More than two-thirds of the shooters and their victims are between the ages of 18 to 34.

Both in the “bad old days” and now, much of gun-related violence takes place in the southeast, predominantly black and poor,&nbsp;neighbourhoods of the city. But lately, property crime has been spreading to parts of the capital long considered safe. That type of crime ranges from carjackings and car theft to burglaries, armed robbery and what has become known as smash-and-grab raids.

These involve dozens or more masked thieves storming into shops, smashing display windows, grabbing merchandise, stuffing it in garbage bags and running out. Few are caught and arrested, and many of the raids take place in wealthy neighbourhoods ranked among the safest in the city.

The CVS pharmacy a few blocks from where I live was raided twice this month, with thieves sweeping shelves clean of beauty products, soap, laundry detergents and a variety of other goods.

These raids have fostered a widespread sense of insecurity not only among city residents but also among foreign diplomats.

On July 24, the Mexican consulate in Washington posted a tweet urging its nationals to “take precautions” in the city due to “a significant increase in crime in areas previously considered safe.”

It was a bizarre twist in warnings about dangers in their respective countries. The US&nbsp;Department of State routinely issues travel warnings to Americans planning to visit Mexico, most regularly during spring break when college students head to Cancun and other beach resorts, as well as Mexican states where drug traffickers hold sway.

One problem in solving the property crimes that make many residents feel more insecure than they did in the peak murder years is that city authorities have not found a way to deal with youthful offenders.

Writing about a violent melee at predominantly black Howard University, Washington Post columnist Colbert King complained about the lenient treatment of young offenders.

The incident he referred to involved around 50 young people involved in a large fight at a restaurant near the campus which injured multiple students and left one hospitalised with stab wounds.

“If by chance the police happen to round up the juveniles who wreaked havoc at Howard," he wrote, "most will be back on the streets before sundown to laugh about it.” King scoffed at a newly passed emergency crime bill the acting DC police chief, Pamela Smith, lauded at a press conference on the latest rash of violence.

Smith noted approvingly that, thanks to the bill, “31 of 103 recent juvenile arrestees have been detained. Smith feels good about that. Seventy-two young suspects now out and about feel even better.”

That might change, DC officials hope, with a youth curfew starting on September 1. It will initially be enforced in a few districts where crime has been running high.

Under the curfew, residents below the age of 16 will be banned from being out in the street from 11 pm&nbsp;to 6 am.&nbsp;On weekends, the curfew starts at midnight.&nbsp;How much change that will make remains to be seen.

Life in Washington DC – back to the bad old days?

For the second time in almost a month, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell froze for a short span of time while addressing the reporters.

At a press conference in Covington, Kentucky, the 81-year-old leader took a more than 30-second pause when he was asked whether he is willing to run for re-election in 2026.

The aides flanking the senator tried to prompt him, but McConnell took more than several seconds to recover. After recovering, the leader&nbsp;answered two more questions from the reporters, which were repeated by the staff.

No comments were made by him regarding his health before he left the press meet with his aides.

Later, he returned to the press conference and informed the reporters that he was feeling "fine" and had felt "lightheaded".

McConnell, who has been leading the narrow minority of the Republican party in the upper chamber of Congress, was hospitalised for a week after he suffered a fractured rib and a concussion following a fall outside a Washington area hotel in March.

Watch | For second time, Mitch McConnell freezes during press conference in US

United States President Joe Biden, whose election campaigns have been focused on easing the financial woes of the voters, on Wednesday (August 30) launched a bid to decrease the cost of particular prescription drugs.

"Millions of Americans are forced to choose between paying for medications they need to live, or paying for food, rent, and other basic necessities. Those days are ending," President Biden pledged in a statement, a move that will be contested by Big Pharma in the court.

While delivering a speech in the White House later in the day, the president said pharmaceutical giants were "hoping the courts will do what Democrats in Congress wouldn't do: protect their exorbitant profits and keep negotiations from happening."

“For all of you out there, I get it, and millions of Americans get it. I promise you. I’m going to have your back and I’ll never stop fighting for you on this issue,” he said.

<h2>Medicare to negotiate prices of 10 drugs</h2>

With the use of new powers given under last year's Inflation Reduction Act, which is a major legislative package of social reforms and energy transition policy, 10 drugs were chosen by the US government for which Medicare will be given the power to negotiate the price. Medicare is the government's health insurance scheme for people above the age of 65.

Previously, Medicare did not have the power to negotiate drug prices which resulted in costs of drugs available in the US being higher than "any other major economy in the world," Biden stated.

On average, the United States has been paying 2.5 times more for prescription drugs compared to other countries like France, as per a study submitted by the Rand Corporation.

As per the US government, around $3.4 billion was spent by senior citizens last year from their own pockets to purchase the 10 drugs that have been mentioned in the list and can treat blood clots, diabetes, heart problems, psoriasis and blood cancers.

The officials of the White House did not specify how much cost-cutting is expected to happen from their negotiations, however, Biden cited the ability of the government to get the drug prices for veterans that were "50 per cent less than Medicare."

Under the IRA, the federal government has the freedom to add more drugs to its negotiating list every year. Medicare price negotiations have been opposed by the pharmaceutical industry for decades, and many companies have already filed lawsuits against the action.&nbsp;

US elections 2024: President Biden announces 10 drugs for price negotiations

Rapper Eminem has asked Vivek Ramaswamy, Republican Party hopeful for nomination in US Presidential Elections, to stop using his music during the campaign trail, as per a letter disclosed on Monday (28 August).

Earlier this month, a video of Ramaswamy singing along to Eminem's "Lose Yourself" at the Iowa State Fair went viral while enjoying a surge in the Republican primary race.

In the letter dated Aug. 23, which was reported first by the Daily Mail, music licenser Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI) remarked that it had received an official request from Eminem insisting that Ramaswamy no longer use his music.

"BMI has received a communication from Marshall B. Mathers, III, professionally known as Eminem, objecting to the Vivek Ramaswamy campaign's use of Eminem's musical composition (the "Eminem Works") and requesting that BMI remove all Eminem Works from the Agreement," BMI says in the letter.

The 38-year-old candidate, who dubs himself "Trump 2.0," has surprisingly ascended to the third position among Republicans who are in the race for the 2024 presidential primary elections.

As an undergraduate at Harvard, his side gig was to rap libertarian-minded lyrics with the stage name "Da Vek."

"If you think debater-extraordinaire Vivek G. Ramaswamy '07 is intense, you obviously haven't met Da Vek," The Crimson, Harvard's student newspaper, humorously noted in 2006.

Earlier, artists like Pharrell Williams, Rihanna, Aerosmith and Adele had complained during the last two elections that their songs were used by former US President Donald Trump in his rallies without their consent.

The Rolling Stones had even threatened to sue if the Trump campaign continued to use the British group's classic hit "You Can't Always Get What You Want."

<h2>Ramaswamy says he'd want Elon Musk as White House adviser</h2>

Earlier, Ramaswamy had said that he would want billionaire Elon Musk to be his adviser if he gets elected as the President of the United States.

Ramaswamy said he would want to bring in "a blank fresh impression," if he becomes US president.

“I’ve enjoyed getting to know better Elon Musk recently. I expect him to be an interesting adviser of mine because he laid off 75% of the employees at Twitter,” he said.

Musk has had positive words for Ramaswamy. On August 17, Musk reposted an interview between Ramaswamy and Tucker Carlson on X (formerly Twitter) and called Ramaswamy "a very promising candidate".

The Pentagon on Thursday (August 24) said that Ukrainian F-16 pilots will start receiving training next month in the United States so that they are capable of using the advanced aircraft against Russian forces.

These sophisticated fighter jets have long been sought by Ukraine to improvise their fighting techniques against the Russian invasion, and the nation is now deeply involved in a fitful counter-offensive that is aimed at retaking land held by Russian forces.

The training provided by the US will involve "several" pilots and "dozens" of personnel for maintaining the aircraft, stated Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder.

"These pilots will be conducting English language training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas in September prior to attending F-16 flying training in Arizona" the following month, he stated.

The United States approved the sale of AH-64E &nbsp;Apache attack helicopters to Poland on Monday (August 21). The giant deal with a frontline ally helping Ukraine in its war against Russian aggression is valued at up to $12 billion, the Pentagon said.

The Pentagon said that Poland has asked for 96 Apache attack helicopters and equipment related to it, along with 1,844 Hellfire missiles and 508 Stinger missiles.

The sale "will improve Poland's capability to meet current and future threats by providing a credible force that is capable of deterring adversaries and participating in NATO operations," a State Department statement said.

Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak confirmed the purchase on social media, stating that "until the procedures are completed and the purchased helicopters are delivered to Poland, the US Army will provide us with Apache helicopters from its own resources."

Last year, Poland decided to acquire the Apaches to replace its age-old Soviet-era helicopter fleet after concerns grew over Russia's military action in neighbouring Ukraine.

The NATO member has actively backed US-led measures to support Ukraine against Russian invasion with billion-dollar investment in US weapons delivered to Ukraine traversing the border through Poland.

China on Saturday (August 19) launched military drills around Taiwan in an angry response to Taiwanese Vice President William Lai's visit to the United States. China on Saturday (August 19) launched military drills around Taiwan in an angry response to Taiwanese Vice President William Lai's visit to the United States. According to a report by the Xinhua news agency, Chinese military spokesperson Shi Yi said the Eastern Theatre Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army "launched joint air and sea patrols and military exercises of the navy and air force around the island of Taiwan". The report said the drills were meant to test the PLA's ability "to seize control of air and sea spaces" and fight "in real combat conditions". The scale of these drills is not yet known. The drills were also intended to serve as "a stern warning to the collusion of 'Taiwan independence' separatists with foreign elements and their provocations," the report added. Taiwan condemns drills, detects 42 warplane incursions Taiwan condemned Saturday's drills, and said it would dispatch "appropriate forces" to respond "with practical actions". "Conducting a military exercise this time under a pretext not only does not help the peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait but also highlights (China's) militaristic mentality and confirms the hegemonic nature of its military expansion," Taiwan's defence ministry said in a statement. Taiwan said that it had detected 42 warplane incursions into its air defence zone since China announced the launch of military drills. It added it has the ability, determination, and confidence to ensure national security. China on Lai's US visit: '...violation of one-China principle' China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, despite the strong objections of the island's government. The latest friction between the two countries comes following Taiwanese President Vice President Lai's US visit. Lai returned from the US on Friday, where he officially made only stopovers on his way to and from Paraguay, though he gave speeches while in America. On Friday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said, "The United States insisted on arranging for William Lai to stop over twice in the country, which seriously violated the one-China principle and undermines China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and sent out a seriously wrong signal to the Taiwan independence separatist forces. China firmly opposes it and strongly condemns this." "The United States insisted on allowing William to stop over to engage in political activities and propagate the separatist idea of Taiwan independence, thereby enhancing official interactions and substantive relation between the United States and Taiwan, and once again exposing the true nature of the United States in saying one thing and doing another, stubbornly pursuing the strategy of using Taiwan to contain China, and constantly hollowing out the one-China principle," Wenbin added. Target's recent earnings report provides valuable insights into the current state of the American economy and consumer behavior. The retail giant's performance sheds light on what people are buying and where sales have increased, reflecting broader economic trends and consumer sentiments.

HIGHLIGHTS OF TARGET'S EARNINGS

- Earnings per share: $1.80

- Revenue: $24.77 Billion

Despite missing quarterly sales expectations and lowering its full-year forecast, Target's earnings report offers a nuanced perspective on the American economy's dynamics.

DECODING CONSUMER SPENDING TRENDS THROUGH TARGET'S EARNINGS

- Consumers cut down on discretionary spends

- Trends point at cautious consumer spending

- Consumers more focused on necessities

- Sales of impulse driven items down

Target's strong performance in certain categories underscores evolving consumer priorities. The retailer's struggles to entice shoppers to spend on discretionary items reflect a broader trend of cautious consumer behavior.

Target's CEO Brian Cornell highlighted, rising interest rates, the return of student loan payments, and elevated prices for everyday essentials as challenges for consumers. "As we look at the consumer landscape today, we recognize the consumer is still challenged by the levels of inflation that they’re seeing in food and beverage and household essentials," he said.

The emphasis on necessities is evident in Target's merchandise mix and sales trends. While sales of fun and impulse-driven items have declined, categories like groceries and household essentials remain resilient. Groceries constitute a smaller portion of Target's revenue compared to Walmart, emphasizing Target's reliance on other product categories. This trend aligns with consumer prioritization of needs over wants, as discretionary funds are directed towards essential items rather than leisure purchases.

Target's strategic shifts and successes also indicate consumers' changing preferences. The retailer's adaptation to high-frequency categories, such as groceries and household essentials, showcases its responsiveness to consumer demands. Growth in these areas has compensated for declines in discretionary categories, signifying a focus on meeting essential needs amidst economic challenges.

The collaboration with Ulta Beauty and the surge in beauty product sales suggest consumers' continued interest in self-care and personal indulgence. Sales of brightly colored tumblers, Barbie-themed merchandise, and exclusive vinyl records illustrate the enduring appeal of nostalgic and unique items. This trend indicates that consumers are willing to spend on products that provide a sense of comfort, joy, and self-expression.

The partnership with Ulta Beauty underscores the evolving retail landscape, where specialized collaborations enhance the shopping experience and tap into diverse consumer interests. This strategy aligns with consumers' desire for personalized and meaningful purchases, which can mitigate the impact of economic uncertainty.

The Republican-led General Assembly on Wednesday (August 16) overrode the North Carolina Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper's vetoes of the trio of bills targetted at LGBTQ+ youth barring gender-affirming health care for minors, limiting their participation in school sports events and also restricting classroom instructions about gender identity and sexuality.

GOP supermajorities in the House and Senate passed, over Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper's opposition, a bill banning medical experts from giving hormone therapy, puberty-blocking drugs and surgical gender-transition procedures to anyone under the age of 18, with restricted exceptions.

The law that has been passed, will take effect immediately.&nbsp;However,&nbsp;minors who started their treatments before &nbsp;August 1 will be allowed to receive medical care if doctors deem it necessary with parental consent.

19-year-old Nathaniel Dibble and other LGBTQ+ youth who rallied outside the Legislative Building expressed concern over the bill stating that it would make schools a treacherous place for transgender kids who could be banished by teachers or by parents that are not supportive.

Sen. Amy Galey, an Alamance County Republican, argued that parents have the right to know about the details of their children's education.&nbsp;

He added, “Violence or the threat of violence is never an acceptable form of expression, and we urge Pakistani authorities to conduct a full investigation into these allegations and call for calm for all of those involved."

Citing court documents, SPA said that the court found out that Naseef beat and choked his father and wounded him after he died, further adding that he also used drugs and made attempts to kill another person.

The mode of the death sentence was not mentioned by the Gulf kingdom but in the past, the country has often beheaded those given the capital punishment.

"We are aware of those reports and are monitoring the situation but don't have any specifics," State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters.

He stated that a United States consular official last visited Naseef in the month of July.

<h2>World's third most prolific executioner&nbsp;</h2>

Often denounced for extensive use of capital punishment, Saudi Arabia was the world's third most prolific executioner last year, according to&nbsp;Amnesty International.

Since King Salman took over in 2015, more than 1,000 death sentences have been reported in the country, as per a report published earlier this year by the European Saudi Organisation for Human Rights and the UK-based group Reprieve.

Nearly 91 people, out of which 19 are foreigners, have been put to death this year, as per an AFP news agency tally based on state media reports.

The total number of executions reported in the year 2022 was double than what was reported in the year 2021. From 69 in 2021, the figure rose to 147 in 2022.

Executions for crimes related to drugs resumed in the year 2022, putting an end to a suspension that stayed for almost three years.

In the year 2022, an episode sparked a global outcry where&nbsp;81 people were executed on a single day for terror-related offences in the Gulf Kingdom.
