Fighting in eastern Ukraine has been raging on for months now. Several cities in the region are under Russian airstrikes and artillery attacks. Ukrainian forces who have repelled several of these attacks say that Russia is bent on taking control of Bakhmut.

<p>Head of Russia's Wagner mercenary group Yevgeny Prigozhin on Tuesday said that the forces have captured more than 80 per cent of Bakhmut, the war-torn eastern city of Ukraine, after some of the bloodiest fighting.</p>

<p>The claims were not addressed directly by some senior Ukrainian military officials, however, they said that their forces have been holding firm against Russia's fierce attacks on the city, which once was populated by 70,000 people, and keeping the Russian forces in check.</p>

<p>For months, Russia's Wagner fighters have been making efforts to capture Bakhmut. The constant artillery barrages and grinding trench warfare have been compared to World War 1 because of the huge casualties inflicted on the two sides.</p>

<p>Prigozhin said that the Wagner's forces, who had a major role to play in Russian advances in the east, were constantly pressing on their forces' encirclement of Bakhmut.</p>

<p>"In Bakhmut, the larger part, more than 80% is now under our control, including the whole administrative centre, factories, warehouses, the administration of the city," he stated in a video shared by a Russian military blogger.</p>

<p>The Russian-installed head of the Donetsk region Denis Pushilin said that Ukrainian defenders were backed by the Russian forces into a corner.</p>

<p>Donetsk was among the four areas which Russia had declared to have annexed last September.</p>

<p>"In the western areas where their units are dug in, they have no choice other than coming forward and giving themselves up," Denis Pushilin was quoted as telling state television by the Russian news agencies.</p>

<p>Ukraine's Eastern Military Command spokesperson Serhiy Cherevatyi said that the situation in Bakhmut has remained under control, adding that Kyiv won't allow the Russian army to encircle its troops.</p>

<p>Deputy Ukrainian Defence Minister Hanna Malyar accepted that Bakhmut "took the main hit" in intense fighting. However, Russian forces, she stated, "are generally losing to us in street battles so they are simply destroying all buildings and structures".</p>

<p>Kyiv said that it requires more and better quality Western weapons to defeat Russia, as the senior Ukrainian officials emphasised on persuading the allies to open up stockpiles.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has already given assurance of "ironclad" US support.</p>

<p>Prigozhin has previously claimed about Russia gaining control over the mining city which turned out to be premature, but Ukraine accepts that the situation in "fortress Bakhmut" is now very difficult.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has written a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The said letter was handed over by&nbsp;Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Dzheppar during her meeting with the Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi on Tuesday in New Delhi.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the letter saying Ukraine requested additional humanitarian supplies including medicines and medical equipment as the war&nbsp;lingered on.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Besides holding discussion on a wide range of bilateral and international issues of mutual interest, she handed over a letter from President Zelenskyy, addressed to Prime Minister Modi," read the statement by MEA.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The Ukrainian Deputy FM also proposed that rebuilding infrastructure in Ukraine could be an opportunity for Indian companies,” the statement added.</p>

<p>This was Dzheppar's first visit to India since Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year. It was the culmination of her three-day visit to India and the letter is an attempt to win some favour from the Indian side which is due to host the G7 summit later this year.</p>

<p>Notably, the letter sought Zelensky's participation&nbsp;in the September summit as well with the Indian side keeping mum on the issue so far.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I think India is a global player. It is really a 'Vishwaguru' of the world. We are feeling the pain by actually fighting for the values. This is about justice... Rusia is questioning the very existence of my country. In our history of 1,500 years, Ukraine never attacked any country," said&nbsp;Dzheppar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hackers in Ukraine said on Monday (April 10) that they had broken into e-mails of a senior Russian military spy wanted by the FBI in connection with hacking into the Hillary Clinton campaign ahead of Donald Trump's election to presidency in 2016.</p>

<p>The hacker group, calling itself Cyber Resistance announced on Telegram that it had stolen correspondence from Lt Col Sergey Morgachev.</p>

<p>Sergey Morgachev was charged in 2018 with helping organise hack and leak of emails from Democratic National Committee (DNC) and campaign of Hillary Clinton.</p>

<p>InformNapalm said in an article about the breach that it confirmed Morgachev's identity by checking personnel files and CVs stolen by the hackers.</p>

<p>On its website, InformNapalm calls itself a volunteer initiative and that its core mission is to "inform the world about the real role of the Russian government in ongoing hybrid conflicts in Ukraine,..."</p>

<p>No immediate reaction from Morgachev was reported.</p>

<p>A British surveillance plane was on the verge of being shot down by a Russian fighter jet last year, &nbsp;as per leaked Pentagon documents which propelled US officials to spy on its allies and adversaries in a bid to find where things went southwards. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to The Washington Post, one of the leaked documents mention a "near shoot-down of UK RJ," a United Kingdom reconnaissance aircraft. RJ signifies to RC-135 reconnaissance planes. They are also known by the name "Rivet Joints."</p>

<p>As per reports, the nearly-missed incident took place on 29 September last year. The British plane was flying off the Crimean coast. The aircraft was a usual spy one which is used to gather electronic messages.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The information in the leaked document suggests that UK RJ was nearly taken down by a missile shot by a Russian Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is a significant leak. In case Russia had indeed taken out the British plane it would have dragged United States and its NATO partners into the Ukraine war.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is important to note that UK is already aware of this as was disclosed by country's defence minister last year but there is a difference in what he said and what the leaked documents indicate.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The incident was reported to the British Parliament by UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace in October. At the time he said, two Russian fighter planes had intercepted the RC-135 and were flying "recklessly."</p>

<p>However, the point here is that Wallace did not mention that the conflict almost resulted in a shootdown. He only mentioned that a Russian fighter "launched a missile" at the moment. Wallace cited a "technical fault" as the cause of the missile launch.</p>

<p>The other significant disclosure made in the leaked Pentagon documents from February were depleting Ukraine air defenses, something which may spell trouble for the European country fighting the war for over a&nbsp;year now.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per reports, Ukraine’s air defenses are at risk of running out of missiles and ammunition within weeks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Tatar community accounted for at least 12 to 15 per cent of the two million Crimea residents. Reports suggest that after Moscow took over Crimea, it banned the traditional assembly of the Tatar Muslim minority also known as Mejlis. Additionally, Russia has also declared it an extremist organisation and has jailed members of the community since, citing security concerns.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“There is no alternative for Ukraine, or for the world, other than the de-occupation of Crimea. We will return to Crimea,” said the Ukrainian president.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Zelensky also conferred awards to several Muslim Ukrainian servicemen and thanked the Muslim community for defending Ukraine, during the gathering for ‘iftar’ the meal breaking the daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan. He also said that Kyiv “values ​​every person, values every community,” adding that diversity is a part of the country’s character.&nbsp;</p>
