A Russian warplane accidentally fired a weapon into its own city of Belgorod near Ukraine late Thursday (April 20), causing a blast which resulted in damage to nearby buildings, reported the TASS news agency citing the country’s defence ministry. The incident has injured at least two people.

“At around 22:15 (10:15 pm) Moscow time on April 20, when a Su-34 plane of the Russian Aerospace Forces was performing a flight above the city of Belgorod, an emergency release of an air ordnance occurred,” the Russian Defence Ministry was quoted as saying by TASS. An investigation into the incident is underway.

According to the report, the defence ministry confirmed that an unspecified number of buildings were damaged following the accidental discharge of aviation ammunition and confirmed that there were no casualties. The Su-34 is a supersonic fighter-bomber jet.

The defence ministry did not say which weapon was involved. Belgorod region governor Vyacheslav Gladkov announced a state of emergency on Thursday, confirming the blast on the messaging app Telegram and said that there was a crater measuring 20 metres across one of the main streets in the Russian city.

Russian jet accidentally fires weapon in its own city Belgorod near Ukraine

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday (April 21) that all NATO allies agreed that war-torn Ukraine would eventually become a member of the intergovernmental military alliance, but the main focus was to ensure that Ukraine prevails against Russia, the news agency Reuters reported.

Speaking to reporters ahead of a meeting of the Ukraine defence contact group at Ramstein air base in Germany, Stoltenberg said that once the war in Ukraine ends, Kyiv must have "the deterrence to prevent new attacks".

"I said in Kyiv yesterday that Ukraine's future is in the Euro-Atlantic family and all NATO allies have agreed that Ukraine will become a NATO member. But the main focus now is, of course, on how to ensure that Ukraine prevails," he said.

Since the beginning of the Russian offensive in February last year, Ukraine has been seeking to be allowed into NATO. But according to Western diplomats, it remained a distant prospect.

Friday's announcement came a day after Jens Stoltenberg visited Ukraine, his first since the beginning of the war. The NATO secretary-general met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelesnky. Stoltenberg also visited Bucha and laid a wreath in memory of those who died during the occupation of the town and visited a local church.

In a joint press conference with Stoltenberg on Thursday, President Zelensky said, "Now, when the majority of people in NATO countries and the majority of Ukrainians support the entry of our country into the alliance, it is time to take the appropriate decision."

Zelensky also said that a NATO summit in July could become historic if Ukraine received a formal invitation to join.

Stoltenberg meanwhile, said, "Ukraine's future is in the Euro-Atlantic family, Ukraine's future is in NATO, all allies agree on that."

During Friday's meeting at the Ramstein air base, Ukraine pressed allies for long-range weapons, jets and ammunition. And US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters that Washington and allies would discuss providing more air defence and ammunition for Ukraine.

“Ukraine urgently needs our help to shield its citizens and infrastructure and forces from Russia’s missile threat,” Austin added.

Amid Russian missiles and drones that have been causing panic in Kyiv for the past year, it is a fireball-like phenomenon now in the skies which is causing anxiety in the conflict-ridden country. An intense burst of light in the skies over the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv on Wednesday set off panic buttons in the country's defences which initiated an air raid alarm to caution people.

As soon as the images and videos of the bright light in Kyiv skies went public, netizens started calling it out as an alien invasion. The Ukrainian military also put rest to theories that flash light was from a Russian attack. “After verification and clarification, the information regarding the possible use of enemy aircraft or an air strike with missile weapons was not confirmed,” the military said.

Ukraine's space agency said that the light was “probably related” to meteorite entering into Earth’s atmosphere. Air sirens did initially sound in the city, as officials thought a NASA satellite or a incoming missile was heading towards the city. However, the US space agency denied that the bright flash was a satellite of theirs.

Head of Kyiv's military administration Sergiy Popko said on Telegram that a "bright glow" was seen up in the skies over Kyiv. The phenomenon was witnessed at around 10:00 pm upon which an air raid alert was activated.

Even though the alert was put in place, the air defence was not in operation, as per Popko.

Memes started to flood the internet making odd guesses about what the glowing light in the sky could be. Amid all the panic and anxiety, a post by the Ukrainian military claimed that it was a NASA satellite reentering the Earth's atmosphere.

A couple of days ago, NASA said that Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI), a decommissioned spacecraft, is anticipated to re-enter Earth's atmosphere in April, about 21 years after launch. According to the US space agency, there is no danger to people from it.

The 2002-launched RHESSI satellite studied solar flares and coronal mass ejections from its low-Earth orbit. It aided in advancing scientific knowledge behind the production of potent energy bursts. The US agency also stated that as it enters the atmosphere, most of the spacecraft will burn up. "But some components are expected to survive reentry," NASA said.

RHESSI has throughout the years compiled data on the enormous variety of solar flare sizes, from microscopic nanoflares to enormous superflares that are thousands of times more powerful and explosive.

Even findings unrelated to flares were achieved by RHESSI. It included improved measurements of the Sun's structure and terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, released over lightning storms. It said that the 300-kilogram (660-pound) satellite will reenter the atmosphere sometime on Wednesday. Late last year, the US said it would provide Ukraine with patriot air defence system as Russia pounded energy infrastructure from the air. Back then, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed the announcement, saying Moscow will find an 'antidote'. Germany announced in January that it was following the United States in sending one of the advanced missile defence batteries to Ukraine. The Netherlands said it would supply parts of a patriot air defence system to Ukraine, specifically two launchers and missiles. Meanwhile, the new US aid package also includes munitions for the Himars precision rocket system, anti-tank mines, and over nine million rounds of small arms ammunition. According to the US State Department, the latest package brings total aid to Ukraine since Russia's invasion to more than $35.4 billion. Separately, the Ukrainian army said that France's Light AMX-10 RC armoured fighting vehicles were already in service.

At discussions in Warsaw on Monday, Kyiv is attempting to re-open food and grain transit via Poland. As per Reuters, this is a "first step" to lifting the import restrictions after some nations stopped importing grain from Ukraine to safeguard their own agricultural markets from an influx of supplies.

While we have been reporting on the battlefield gains and losses in the Ukraine-Russia war, there is also a second battle that has got underway- The cyber warfare. The war in Ukraine is the largest military conflict of the cyber age and the first to incorporate such significant levels of cyber operations on all sides.

An Iranian court sentenced 10 members of the armed forces to prison after they were found guilty of their involvement in the crash of a Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) jet, reported the judiciary’s Mizan Online website, on Sunday (April 16). The downing of the Ukrainian airliner resulted in the death of all 176 people on board.

What was the verdict?

According to the report by Mizan, a commander received 10 years in prison while the sentencing for the nine others ranged between one to three years. The verdict also closes the trial which Iran’s judiciary said it opened back in November 2021 for 10 military personnel connected with the Ukrainian jet’s downing.

What happened back in 2020?

In 2020, UIA flight PS752 was shot down by two missiles moments after its takeoff from Tehran on January 8. The incident led to the death of all 176 people on board which included mostly Iranians and Canadians. Initially, Tehran had claimed that the Kyiv-bound passenger plane had crashed and was not until three days later that the Iranian armed forces admitted to downing the plane “by mistake”.

According to reports, the Iranian air defence said that they accidentally downed the Boeing 737 after mistaking it for an incoming missile. Tehran had later called it a “disastrous mistake” by forces who were on high alert, at the time of the incident as tensions between Iran and the United States were soaring.

The Iranian forces were anticipating a US counterattack after Tehran fired missiles at a military base in Iraq that was used by American forces. However, the claims of “human error” made by the Islamic Republic have been questioned by Ukraine, Canada, and various organisations as well as observers.

A report by the Iranian Civil Aviation Organization blamed the incident on the misalignment of a radar system and a lack of communication between the air defence operator and his commanders. However, Ukraine and Canada have rejected these claims, reported Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Among those killed were citizens of Afghanistan, Britain, Canada, Germany, Iran, Sweden, and Ukraine.

The leader of the Russian paramilitary force Wagner group and someone believed to have President Vladimir Putin's ear, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has called for an end to the war in Ukraine. This he says should be done as Russia has achieved all of its planned goals in its special operation.

Hungary and Poland have decided to temporarily ban the import of grains and a dozen other consumables from Ukraine in order to shield their struggling farmers from the market glut.

Ukraine said it was unhappy with the decisions of both countries, saying that "resolving various issues by unilateral drastic actions will not accelerate a positive resolution of the situation".

Due to logistical challenges, large amounts of Ukrainian grains—which are less expensive than those produced in the European Union—have ended up staying in Central European nations, lowering their prices and damaging local farmers' sales. This also catapulted into a political problem for the PiS in an election year, reported Reuters.

"Today, the government has decided on a regulation that prohibits the entry, and imports of grain into Poland, but also dozens of other types of food (from Ukraine)," Kaczynski said during the PiS party convention.

"The list of these goods will be included in the government regulation, and there are goods "from grain to honey products, very, very many things," he added.

"We are and remain unchanged friends and allies of Ukraine. We will support her and we support her. ... But it is the duty of every state, every authority, good authority in any case, to protect the interests of its citizens," Kaczynski said.

Kaczynski claimed that Poland was prepared to start negotiations with Ukraine to resolve the grain dispute and that the Ukrainian side was previously made aware of the Polish government's decisions.

Later on Saturday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government joined the ban, saying the status quo would cause severe damage to local farmers. He did give details on when its ban on grain and other food imports would go into effect, but said it will expire at the end of June.

Since then, grain has entered Poland, but much of it hasn't moved on to the Middle East and Northern Africa as planned by the EU, reported the Associated Press.

The Russian defence ministry, on Saturday (April 15), said that the fighters of Moscow’s Wagner mercenary group have captured two more areas of the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut. The city on the frontlines has witnessed some of the deadliest battles amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine and has recently taken on huge symbolic importance even though analysts say it has little strategic value, as per media reports.

Russia claims parts of Bakhmut

In a statement, the Russian defence ministry said, “On the Donetsk direction, the fiercest fighting has been continuing in the city of Artyomovsk,” referring to the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut by its Soviet-era name. It added, “Wagner assault units successfully advanced, capturing two areas on the northern and southern outskirts of the city.”

The Russian defence ministry also accused Ukrainian troops of “deliberately destroying city infrastructure and residential buildings in order to slow the advance” of Moscow’s forces, as they were supposedly retreating. Additionally, the statement also said that the Russian army paratroop units were supporting the claimed advance by holding back Ukrainian forces on the flanks.

This also comes after Moscow claimed to have cut off Ukrainian forces in Bakhmut, on Thursday. However, Ukraine has since denied these claims and said its troops had access and were able to send in munitions.

Who is fighting in the Ukrainian city and why?

Russia’s Wagner mercenary group which is headed by the Kremlin-linked businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin has reportedly led several fights and spearheaded Russia’s attempt to take the Ukrainian city since last summer. Meanwhile, Kyiv has said that Bakhmut is key to holding Russian forces away from the entire eastern front.

UK defence ministry update

In its intelligence updates, the United Kingdom, on Friday (April 14) said that the Ukrainian troops have been pushed back from some territory in Bakhmut as Russia mounted a renewed assault with intense artillery fire over the past two days or so. However, the Ukrainian defence still holds the western districts of the town, said the British Ministry of Defence.

It added, “Ukrainian forces face significant resupply issues but have made orderly withdrawals from the positions they have been forced to concede.” This also comes as Russia, on Friday, had said that it would push to take the western districts of the salt mining town which before the conflict had a population of 70,000 people.
