Ukraine's Eurovision act Tvorchi were due to perform at Kyiv's main rail station Friday when an air raid siren forced them down into the cellar, hours after massive shelling.

The group will represent Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool next month after the UK agreed to host the event instead of the 2022 winner Ukraine because of the war.

"It is what it is," said Andriy Hutsuliak, the electronic music group's 27-year-old producer, after the sirens sounded.

"We believe in our air-defence forces."

"We always have to come down and try to be safe," said the electronic group's 25-year-old vocalist, a Nigerian-Ukrainian who performs as Jeffery Kenny. His full name is Jimoh Augustus Kehinde.

The band members wore matching dark glasses and blue suits with sparkly ornaments in the shape of wheat sheaves. Hutsuliak had his nails painted scarlet.

As it turned out, the all-clear sounded in time for the duo to give an unannounced performance for surprised passengers in the entrance hall of the vast Stalin-era station, which is decked out with chandeliers and mosaics.

Frontman Kenny changed into a gold shirt and trousers, as Hutsuliak jabbed at a synthesiser wearing one black glove. Pink and blue lights flashed as the beats reverberated.

Their concert was to promote a drive to buy incubators for premature babies, run by United 24, an online donation platform supported by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

But the focus was on the forthcoming Eurovision contest.

- 'Heart of Steel' -

Tvorchi's song "Heart of Steel" "symbolises strength, it symbolises courage," said Kenny.

The duo talked of their pride in representing Ukraine.

"We feel honoured and excited to perform in Liverpool, so we just can't wait to show all that we've prepared," Hutsuliak told AFP.

While Kenny declined to give details of their stage show, he promised: "We're definitely preparing something nice.

"We hope it will impress everyone, because we're working a lot on it. And we just hope, you know, things go smoothly.

"We'll add some elements from the ones we had in the national selection and make it better in Liverpool," Hutsuliak added.

Kenny said they had received "a warm welcome" at concerts for fans with other contestants.

And Hutsuliak stressed they did not want "to be pitied" by those voting.

In the end, they acknowledged, the need to win the war overshadowed everything.

"For us it's most important to win the fight and to have peace in the country," said Hutsuliak.

But if they won this year's Eurovision and the situation became safe enough for next year's contest to be held in Ukraine, "we will appreciate that and we'll be happy. That'd be great".

Show goes on, despite air raid, for Ukraine Eurovision act

More than a year after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine, the countries are fighting for control of areas in eastern and southern Ukraine.

Russia-Ukraine war: Ukraine says it's 'ready' for counteroffensive

A Danish newspaper has claimed quoting the Denmark military that a Russian Navy ship was spotted near the Nord Stream pipelines days before the September 2022 blasts.

Dagbladet Information newspaper on Thursday reported that the Russian submarine rescue ship, SS-750, was spotted in the Baltic Sea just four days before the unexplained explosions near the pipeline that linked Russia to Germany.

The paper quoting Danish defence authorities reported that as many as 26 images were taken of the ship, which carries a small submarine that is designed to carry out underwater operations.

“The Danish military confirmed that 26 photos of the Russian vessel were taken from a Danish patrol boat in the zone located east of Bornholm on 22 September 2022,” the newspaper said, adding that the photos were classified.

The prosecutor leading Sweden’s investigation into the sabotage has acknowledged the existence of these photographs.

“I’m aware of the information from before…This is not new information to us,” public prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist said on Friday, AFP news agency reported.

He, however, did not divulge further on how the probing team intends to use these photographs for investigation, saying that it was “confidential".

Seven months have passed since the blasts and it has not yet been established who was responsible for it, despite criminal investigations launched by three countries—Germany, Sweden and Denmark—that border the pipeline.

Swedish and Danish authorities termed the blasts an act of deliberate sabotage. In November, Sweden’s Prosecution Authority claimed that residues of explosives and several “foreign objects” were found at the “crime scene” on the seabed, around 100 metres below the surface of the Baltic Sea, close to the Danish Island of Bornholm.

In March, The New York Times reported that US intelligence officials have proof that a “pro-Ukrainian group” was responsible for the blasts, without the involvement of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

At that time Ljungqvist said it was “still unclear” who was behind the sabotage, calling it “a complex case”.

“Our primary assumption is that a state is behind it,” he was quoted as saying.

Still, speculations about Russia's involvement haven't been completely ruled out. Last week, a joint investigation by Danish, Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian public broadcasters last week found that Russia has been using civilian vessels to collect intelligence on military activity and critical infrastructure in the North Sea, Politico reported.

From a hospital bed, he revealed to La Repubblica that they had just passed three Ukrainian checks when they were abruptly hit.

“I heard a hiss, and I saw Bogdan on the ground,” Zunino told Al Jazeera.

“He wasn’t moving. I crawled out of the line of fire. I ran until I passed a civilian car. I was full of blood. I had to be taken to Kherson Hospital.”

He added that he had been trying to call Bitik, who he described as “a great friend”, but got no answer.

“It’s excruciating,” he said.

Zunino claims that both men were wearing press vests when they were attacked next to the demolished Antonivskyi Bridge.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has requested his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to help bring back the children, allegedly deported by Moscow.

"We need to involve everyone... to put pressure on the Russian aggressor and the terrorists who kidnapped so many of our children," said Zelensky.

"The UN, many others want to do something, but so far the results have been poor. So I have appealed to the leader of China," he added.

The Ukrainian government has claimed nearly 16,000 children have been abducted by Russia since February last year. Kremlin has not denied the accusation, albeit presented it as a humanitarian campaign to protect the orphans present in the conflict areas.

Due to the allegations, the International Criminal Court (ICC) earlier this year issued an arrest warrant in the name of Putin. Though ICC attempts to start a legal battle, Moscow has stated it will not be entertaining any arrest warrant. The country withdrew its membership from ICC in 2016.

Zelensky requests Xi's help to bring back deported children from Russia

Russia has launched a wave of air strikes against cities across Ukraine, including Kyiv, leaving at least 12 people dead. Ten people including a child were killed in an attack that hit a block of flats in the central city of Uman, officials said.

Ukraine war: Twelve dead as Russian missiles hit cities

There is no let up in Russia's onslaught. Russian troops pounded Ukraine with a barrage of missile strikes. Sea-launched missiles hit a residential block in the city of Mykolaiv killing one and injuring twenty three. Russian artillery also continued it's onslaught on Bakhmut, while Ukrainian forces prepare a counter-offensive in the besieged city.

Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, the first known call between the two leaders since the start of Russia's invasion. The nearly one-hour discussion, which reportedly included Xi advocating for peace negotiations, was met by Russian accusations that Ukraine was undermining efforts to end the fighting. Beijing says it is neutral in the Ukraine conflict and Xi has never condemned the Russian invasion, but the Chinese leader has come under increased pressure from Western nations to step in and mediate.

A prominent Kremlin critic and a popular former mayor Yevgeny Roizman went on trial on Wednesday (April 26). Roizman faces accusations of discrediting the Russian Army over its war in Ukraine.

In 2013, Roizman, 60, became Russia's highest-profile opposition mayor and held the position in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg for five years.

Roizman is Russia's last prominent opposition leader who is still in the country and has not yet been put behind bars.

Roizman has been openly critical about Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He has said in the past that he could go to prison at any moment. In Yekaterinburg, Roizman is a hugely popular figure. He is also a friend of jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.

A criminal probe was opened against Roizman by authorities in August 2022. He is being accused of "discrediting" the Russian army through his comments about Moscow's military intervention in Ukraine.

Dressed in blue jeans and a white T-shirt, Roizman pleaded not guilty at the start of the trial in Yekaterinburg, according to a live YouTube broadcast of the hearing.

Asked by the judge if he admitted his guilt, Roizman said "no".

Roizman is a leader with a penchant for crude language. He has in past, peppered Twitter with swear words to mock Russian officials, much to the delight of his supporters.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year. After sustained gains in the battlefield in the initial months of the conflict, Russian forces had to retreat in the face of Ukrainian counterattack.

Roizman, a tall and sporty 60-year-old, is a charismatic and sometimes controversial member of the opposition, known for his punchy tweets.

He did not hold back when speaking out against Russia's Ukraine campaign as soon as it was launched over a year ago.

"Something horrible is happening, evil is prevailing. Absolutely vile evil is suddenly prevailing before our eyes," he said in an interview with AFP last July.

Roizman's weapon of choice was his Twitter account, where he posted hundreds of short satirical messages peppered with Russian swear words, as he denounced the Kremlin's actions and state media.

"It's short and brutal anti-propaganda," he told AFP, saying he was inspired by works of French Renaissance writer Francois Rabelais known for his gallows humour.

While he has not been in police custody ahead of the trial, Roizman has been banned from using the internet and giving interviews, ending his Twitter campaign.

Russia: Kremlin critic ex-mayor put on trial for Ukraine criticism

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday (April 27) that NATO allies had delivered almost all the combat vehicles promised by them to Ukraine as it fights the Russian invasion.

"More than 98% of the combat vehicles promised to Ukraine have already been delivered. That means over 1,550 armoured vehicles, 230 tanks, and other equipment, including vast amounts of ammunition," he told reporters at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

"In total, we have trained and equipped more than nine new Ukrainian armoured brigades. This will put Ukraine in the strong position to continue to retake occupied territory," he said at a news conference with Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel.

Whether this marks beginning of the end of active Western support to Ukraine is a matter that remains to be seen. There have been voices from the Western sphere that allies cannot keep on supporting and supplying Ukraine indefinitely.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year. After sustained gains in first few months of the conflict, Russian forces had to retreat in the face of Ukrainian counterattack. The successful Ukrainian counterattacks are in large parts attributed to Western help that was in the form of monetary aid and weapons.

Currently, the fight between Russian and Ukrainian forces is over the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine. On Thursday, a Ukrainian artillery unit fired a US-made howitzer. It is being rumoured that Ukrainian military is preparing for a counteroffensive.

Andrii, a 22-year-old gun commander, told Reuters in a hideout near the artillery position, that although the American-made M119 howitzer was first used in the 1980s, it had one big advantage over Soviet-made guns.

"This (howitzer) is easy to handle. Our (Soviet-made howitzers) are more complicated to handle, which costs us time. And as you know, we don't have much time," he said.

Spotting targets in Bakhmut for Andrii via reconnaissance drones, 24-year-old Yaroslav added that it had become more difficult to hit Russian troops in the embattled town.

"We often observed large groups of soldiers moving around, it was very illogical... they adapted, and now we see them moving in small groups, two to four people that move around, keeping 20 to 30 metres' distance," Yaroslav said.

The general staff of Ukraine's armed forces, in a report on Facebook, said fighting gripped Bakhmut and nearby areas. It said Russian forces had failed to advance on two villages to the northwest. At least a dozen localities came under Russian fire.

Russian foreign ministry's head of nuclear non-proliferation Vladimir Yermakov on Tuesday said that there has been a steady growth in the direct military confrontation between the world's two nuclear powers - the United States and Russia. The senior Russian diplomat warned about the nuclear confrontation.

Yermakov, speaking to the Russian state news agency TASS, said the conduct of Washington towards Moscow is escalating the risks of a nuclear war in the future.

Since Russia started invading Ukraine 14 months ago, regular charges were issued by Moscow against the United States and Yermakov called out "the collective West" for increasing the risks of a nuclear war.

"If the United States continues to follow its current course of confrontation with Russia, with the stakes constantly escalating on the verge of sliding into direct armed conflict, then the fate of START (nuclear arms treaty) may be a foregone conclusion," said Yermakov.

In March, the US informed Russia that it will stop exchanging data on its nuclear forces after Moscow refused to share the same, calling it a reaction to Russia's decision of pulling out from the New START treaty.

"In the worst-case scenario, i.e. if Washington drives the situation to a military clash between the strongest nuclear powers, then it is not the fate of the New START but the fate of the entire world that will be a concern," Yermakov said.

"This once again confirms that the most pressing threat today is connected not with the dynamic of stimuli for the first massive strike, which is supposed to be curbed by agreements like the New START, but with a danger of nuclear escalation as a result of a direct military confrontation between nuclear powers. And, to our deepest regrets, these risks keep growing," he added.

Risks of nuclear confrontation with United States growing, claims Russia

Amid furore caused by an envoy's remarks, China conceded on Monday (April 24) that it respected the "sovereign state status" of all ex-Soviet countries. The remarks from the Chinese foreign ministry came after Ukraine slammed the "absurd" remarks by China’s ambassador to France on ex-Soviet nations, who basically questioned their sovereignty. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters that Beijing "respects the sovereign state status of the participating republics after the dissolution of the Soviet Union."

The remarks over sovereignty were made by Lu Shaye as he suggested that the countries that emerged after the fall of the Soviet Union "don't have effective status under international law because there is not an international agreement confirming their status as sovereign nations."

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said that the remarks were "unacceptable". Borrell further added in a tweet that the EU "can only suppose these declarations do not represent China's official policy."

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov's son served in Ukraine: Report

Former Russian president and a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Medvedev, said on Sunday that if the G7 decided to impose export restrictions on Russia, Moscow would retaliate by cancelling the Black Sea Grain Agreement, which permits crucial grain shipments from Ukraine.

"This idea from the idiots at the G7 about a total ban of exports to our country by default is beautiful in that it implies a reciprocal ban on imports from our country, including categories of goods that are the most sensitive for the G7," Medvedev said in a post on his Telegram channel.

According to last week's report by the Japanese Kyodo news agency, which cited sources within the Japanese government, the Group of Seven (G7) nations are proposing a blanket ban on exports to Russia.

Russia has threatened on many occasions to withdraw from the grain agreement, which is set to expire on 18 May. "In such a case, the grain deal - and many other things that they need - will end for them," he added.

According to reports, the G7 is debating changing its sanctions policy towards Russia. It includes proposals that shipments to Russia would be automatically prohibited unless they were on a defined list of goods that were permitted for exports.

As per the current rules, unless specifically blacklisted, products may be sold to Russia without any restrictions. Vladimir Putin's longtime supporter Medvedev serves as Putin's deputy at the powerful Security Council and is the chairman of a government commission on arms production for the conflict in Ukraine.

The Black Sea grain agreement, the only important diplomatic achievement during the 14-month battle in Ukraine, has been frequently criticised by Moscow.

The G7 agriculture ministers in a communique earlier called for the "extension, full implementation and expansion" of the grain deal.

Inspection teams from Russia, Ukraine, the UN, and Turkey are required as part of the agreement to guarantee that ships are carrying only food and other agricultural supplies and no weaponry. Ukraine, on the other hand, has accused Russia of delaying inspections and stopping grain exports.

Ukraine is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of grain. It is worth noting that if the grain deal is scrapped it will result in tensions and trade restrictions, which could become complicated further. Any such move by Russia to scrap the agreement would likely have significant economic and political implications for not just Russia and Ukraine but for the wider region.

Zelensky signs law banning Russian place names in Ukraine, aims to restore national identity

For more than a year, Ukraine has been fighting for its life against a military superpower that enjoys overwhelming advantages in terms of funding, weapons, and manpower. One of the few areas were Ukraine has managed to stay consistently ahead of Russia is in the use of innovative military technologies.

China’s ambassador to France has sparked anger and dismay among eastern European countries after questioning the sovereignty of former Soviet countries including Ukraine. The Chinese ambassador Lu Shaye, in an interview on Friday (April 22) seemingly suggested that countries that emerged after the fall of the Soviet Union are not really sovereign.

What did the Chinese envoy say?

Speaking with France’s LCI news channel, Shaye said, “These ex-USSR countries don’t have actual status in international law because there is no international agreement to materialize their sovereign status.”

The remarks were made after he was asked whether he believes Crimea is part of Ukraine or not. Crimea was annexed by Russia back in 2014. The Chinese ambassador, in this context, also said, “it depends on how you look at the problem. There's history. Crimea was Russian at the start.”

These comments have not only cast doubt not just on Ukraine which is in the midst of an invasion by Russia but on most eastern European countries which emerged as independent nations after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, many of which are also members of the European Union.

How have the countries reacted?

After the interview, France and eastern European countries released statements in response to the Chinese envoy’s comments. Paris, late Saturday, stated its “full solidarity” with all the allied countries affected, which it said had acquired their independence “after decades of oppression”.

The French foreign ministry also said that it had “learned with consternation about the statements from the ambassador.” It added, “It remains up to China to say whether these statements reflect its position which we hope not to be the case.”

Following the interview, Ukraine condemned what it called “absurd” comments from the Chinese ambassador. On Sunday, the Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhaylo Podolyak said the status of post-Soviet countries was “enshrined in international law”.

He added, "It is strange to hear an absurd version of the ‘history of Crimea’ from a representative of a country that is scrupulous about its 1,000-year history.”

Meanwhile, Latvia’s foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics took to Twitter and wrote, “Remarks by the Chinese Ambassador in France concerning international law and sovereignty of nations are completely unacceptable. We expect (an) explanation from the Chinese side and complete retraction of this statement.”

Additionally, his Lithuanian counterpart, Gabrielius Landsbergis said, “If anyone is still wondering why the Baltic States don't trust China to 'broker peace in Ukraine', here's a Chinese ambassador arguing that Crimea is Russian and our countries' borders have no legal basis,” reported AFP.

The Estonian foreign minister, Margus Tsahkna, also called Shaye's comments “false and a misinterpretation of history.” The three Baltic countries have reportedly said that they would each summon China’s ambassador or representative for an explanation of the envoy’s comments.

Chinese ambassador questions sovereignty of former Soviet countries; France, Ukraine, Baltic nations dismayed

The recently elected Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has garnered criticism over his stance on the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and said he does not want to “please anyone” with his views about the conflict, on Saturday (April 22), amid his five-day visit to Portugal.

What did Lula say in Lisbon?

The statement came after he arrived a day prior, in Portugal, and was faced with protests as many stood waving Ukrainian flags and holding photographs depicting conflict atrocities outside the Brazilian embassy in Lisbon.

Lula’s stance has not only angered the people in Lisbon but also the West and Kyiv for suggesting Ukraine and Russia are to blame for the conflict that began over a year ago. Addressing the press in the Portuguese capital, on Saturday, beginning his first visit to Europe after being elected president he called for a “negotiated” settlement between Kyiv and Moscow.

“While my government condemns the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, we support a negotiated political solution to the conflict,” said Lula, following a meeting with the Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. He added, “Brazil does not want to take part in this war. Brazil wants to create peace.”

Last week, the Brazilian president faced criticism after he said the United States and its European allies should stop supplying arms to Ukraine as they are prolonging the war. “If you are not making peace, you are contributing to war,” said Lula.

Subsequently, the White House accused him of “parroting Russian and Chinese propaganda”, while the Ukrainian government has criticised the Brazilian president for treating "the victim and the aggressor” the same way.

Protests in Lisbon over Lula’s visit

Portugal is a founding member of NATO and also sent military aid to Ukraine while the country’s president has previously said that Kyiv had the right to defend itself. On Saturday, Rebelo de Sousa also acknowledged that Portugal has a “different position” on the ongoing conflict adding that “for a road to peace to become a possibility, Ukraine must first have the right to respond to the invasion.”

The capital city of Portugal witnessed protests, on Friday, after many gathered outside the Brazilian embassy in Lisbon over Lula’s recent remarks.

A Ukrainian refugee named Yana Kolomiiets who was among the protesters and had been in Portugal for four months and said she felt “terrible” after hearing Lula’s comments last week, reported Reuters. The 27-year-old also said, “It has made me so upset because I don't know how the president of Brazil can support (Russian President Vladimir) Putin…this killer.”

More than 3,000 people in the Russian city of Belgorod were evacuated after another explosive object was found at the site where Moscow’s warplane accidentally fired a weapon which caused a blast, on April 20. The evacuation took place on Saturday (April 22) and a couple of hours later people returned home after the explosive was disposed of.

Around 3,000 people evacuated

Belgorod region governor Vyacheslav Gladkov took to messaging app Telegram, on Saturday and said that the Russian military’s explosive technicians have found “an explosive object” and decided to “disarm it at the range.” The range that the governor was referring to was a training ground.

“The operational headquarters decided to evacuate 17 apartment buildings within a radius of 200 metres. According to preliminary data, it is more than 3,000 people. Anyone who needs help with temporary accommodation, it will be provided,” said Gladkov, on Saturday, as per Reuters.

Hours later the governor said that people had started to return to their homes after the “shell” was removed from the area.

Russian jet accidentally fires weapon

The evacuation came days after a Su-34, a supersonic fighter-bomber jet accidentally fired a weapon in Belgorod which is near the border with Ukraine. This incident took place amid what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Kyiv.

After reports of an explosion in the Russian city, Moscow’s defence ministry released a statement saying that when a “Su-34 plane of the Russian Aerospace Forces was performing a flight above the city of Belgorod, an emergency release of an air ordnance occurred.”

The accidental discharge of aviation ammunition at the time had damaged some buildings and injured at least three people, as per media reports. However, the governor later said four cars and four apartment buildings were damaged while the blast had also left a crater measuring 20 metres across one of the main streets in the Russian city.

While footage of the site shows piles of concrete on the street, several damaged cars and a building with broken windows, reported Reuters, adding that one video also showed what appeared to be a car upside down on the roof of a store.

In an effort to recruit more troops to fight in Ukraine, the Russian military has released a video ad that challenges anyone who is interested in joining the Ukraine conflict to prove they are "a real man" by leaving behind what it says is a humdrum civilian life. Major Russian social networking sites have already started to run the recruitment advertisement.

The dramatic advertisement comes after reports from Russian media and British military intelligence that Moscow is looking to reinforce its forces in Ukraine by enlisting up to 400,000 more soldiers.

The recruitment of Russian men in the Ukraine war is marred with controversy at a time when the casuality data for soldiers is yet not ascertained. A recent estimate from the US Defence Intelligence Agency claims that up to 43,000 Russians have died in the conflict thus far. It also estimated that up to 17,500 Ukrainians also died.

A couple of days back reports suggested that Russia introduced an electronic call-up plan to crack down on dodgers who don't want to serve in the military. The Russian authorities have been downplaying the possibility of a second mobilisation call after launching a partial mobilisation drive in September.

The earlier drive forced tens of thousands of Russian men to flee the country to avoid being drafted. Recruitment posters for professional troops have appeared across the Russian capital with the message, "Our Profession is to defend the Motherland."

As the Ukraine conflict wages on, the Russian army is seeking gunners, military doctors, drivers, and tank commanders, according to the ads. In return, they are promising the prospective recruits "respect, an honourable profession, and decent pay."

WATCH | Russian recruitment ad calling for 'real men' to fight in Ukraine

The sanctions imposed by the Western world on Russia may not have deterred President Vladimir Putin from stopping his Ukraine invasion but the voices that are challenging him are certainly facing the heat.

The sanctions imposed by the Western world on Russia may not have deterred President Vladimir Putin from stopping his Ukraine invasion but the voices that are challenging him are certainly facing the heat. TV channel Dozhd, also known as TV Rain, widely recognised as one of the very few remaining Russian channels critical of Putin is facing heavy losses due to sanctions. Vera Krichevskaya, one of the co-founders said the channel was losing anywhere between $1 million to $1.5 million per year in potential revenue due to sanctions on its YouTube channel. Notably, after the Russian invasion, Google-owned YouTube suspended all monetisation programmes for users in Russia. The decision was taken after advertisements were already suspended in the country. About 65 per cent of TV Rain’s audience is in Russia but with no revenue coming from them, the channel has to rely on non-Russia-based audience for advertising income. Krichevskaya said she had been in touch with executives from Google and YouTube to persuade them to relax the rules but so far, no progress had been made. “I found it very strange that when the west goes on about the importance of freedom of speech and western European values, a company like Google has no flexibility," Krichevskaya was quoted as saying by The Guardian. “They give us zero income and zero profit on Russian audiences, making it near impossible to operate.” The channel was forced to leave Russia after the Putin administration accused it of broadcasting false information about the war. Since then, it had been operating from Lativa until the authorisation was revoked by the country's media watchdog. However, in January this year, the Netherlands granted a five-year broadcasting licence to the channel. WATCH | US releases new Russia sanctions list, top energy, telecom firm prime target in list × The game of sanctions The US Treasury and State Departments sanctioned nearly 120 targets, including Russian, Chinese, UAE and Turkish firms to squeeze Moscow for its ongoing war with Ukraine. While the likes of TV Rain face economic hardships, the US is also inflicting self-harm due to the sanctions. Earlier this week, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, without naming Russia said economic sanctions imposed on countries had put the dollar's dominance at stake. ALSO READ | US dollar may lose its dominance if nations are sanctioned, warns Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen As the US continues to plaster sanctions willy-nilly, targeted nations are seeking alternatives which puts the USD in jeopardy. "There is a risk when we use financial sanctions that are linked to the role of the dollar that over time it could undermine the hegemony of the dollar," Yellen was quoted as saying by CNN.
