Roizman has been openly critical about Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He has said in the past that he could go to prison at any moment. In Yekaterinburg, Roizman is a hugely popular figure. He is also a friend of jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.

A criminal probe was opened against Roizman by authorities in August 2022. He is being accused of "discrediting" the Russian army through his comments about Moscow's military intervention in Ukraine.

Dressed in blue jeans and a white T-shirt, Roizman pleaded not guilty at the start of the trial in Yekaterinburg, according to a live YouTube broadcast of the hearing.

Asked by the judge if he admitted his guilt, Roizman said "no".

Roizman is a leader with a penchant for crude language. He has in past, peppered Twitter with swear words to mock Russian officials, much to the delight of his supporters.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year. After sustained gains in the battlefield in the initial months of the conflict, Russian forces had&nbsp;to retreat in the face of Ukrainian counterattack.

Roizman, a tall and sporty 60-year-old, is a charismatic and sometimes controversial member of the opposition, known for his punchy tweets.&nbsp;

He did not hold back when speaking out against Russia's Ukraine campaign as soon as it was launched over a year ago.

"Something horrible is happening, evil is prevailing. Absolutely vile evil is suddenly prevailing before our eyes," he said in an interview with AFP last July.

Roizman's weapon of choice was his Twitter account, where he posted hundreds of short satirical messages peppered with&nbsp;Russian swear words, as he denounced the Kremlin's actions and state media.&nbsp;

Russia: Kremlin critic ex-mayor put on trial for Ukraine criticism

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday (April 27) that NATO allies had delivered almost all the combat vehicles promised by them to Ukraine as it fights the Russian invasion.

"More than 98% of the combat vehicles promised to Ukraine have already been delivered. That means over 1,550 armoured vehicles, 230 tanks, and other equipment, including vast amounts of ammunition," he told reporters at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

"In total, we have trained and equipped more than nine new Ukrainian armoured brigades. This will put Ukraine in the strong position to continue to retake occupied territory," he said at a news conference with Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel.

Whether this marks beginning of the end of active Western support to Ukraine is a matter that remains to be seen. There have been voices from the Western sphere that allies cannot keep on supporting and supplying Ukraine indefinitely.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year. After sustained gains in first few months of the conflict, Russian forces had to retreat in the face of Ukrainian counterattack. The successful Ukrainian counterattacks are in large parts attributed to Western help that was in the form of monetary aid and weapons.

Currently, the fight between Russian and Ukrainian forces is over the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine. On Thursday, a Ukrainian artillery unit fired a US-made howitzer. It is being rumoured that Ukrainian military is preparing for a counteroffensive.

Andrii, a 22-year-old gun commander, told Reuters in a hideout near the artillery position, that although the American-made M119 howitzer was first used in the 1980s, it had one big advantage over Soviet-made guns.

"This (howitzer) is easy to handle. Our (Soviet-made howitzers) are more complicated to handle, which costs us time. And as you know, we don't have much time," he said.

Spotting targets in Bakhmut for Andrii via reconnaissance drones, 24-year-old Yaroslav added that it had become more difficult to hit Russian troops in the embattled town.

"We often observed large groups of soldiers moving around, it was very illogical... they adapted, and now we see them moving in small groups, two to four people that move around, keeping 20 to 30 metres' distance," Yaroslav said.

The general staff of Ukraine's armed forces, in a report on Facebook, said fighting gripped Bakhmut and nearby areas. It said Russian forces had failed to advance on two villages to the northwest. At least a dozen localities came under Russian fire.

Yermakov, speaking to the Russian state news agency TASS, said the conduct of Washington towards Moscow is escalating the risks of a nuclear war in the future.&nbsp;

Since Russia started invading Ukraine 14 months ago, regular charges were issued by Moscow against the United States and Yermakov called out "the collective West" for increasing the risks of a nuclear war.

"If the United States continues to follow its current course of confrontation with Russia, with the stakes constantly escalating on the verge of sliding into direct armed conflict, then the fate of START (nuclear arms treaty) may be a foregone conclusion," said Yermakov.&nbsp;

"In the worst-case scenario, i.e. if Washington drives the situation to a military clash between the strongest nuclear powers, then it is not the fate of the New START but the fate of the entire world that will be a concern," &nbsp;Yermakov said.

"This once again confirms that the most pressing threat today is connected not with the dynamic of stimuli for the first massive strike, which is supposed to be curbed by agreements like the New START, but with a danger of nuclear escalation as a result of a direct military confrontation between nuclear powers. And, to our deepest regrets, these risks keep growing," he added.

China caves in after outrage, says it respects ex-Soviet states as sovereign nations

Nikolai Peskov, the 33-year-old&nbsp;son of Kremlin spokesperson&nbsp;Dmitry Peskov served in Ukraine with Wagner Group, a private military company (PMC) known for providing mercenary services to Russia.&nbsp;

In an interview with Russian media, Nikolai claimed he served in Ukraine as he "couldn’t sit on the sidelines and watch&nbsp;friends and other people go there," reported CNN.&nbsp;

The Wagner group has been accused of committing numerous human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, torture, and other abuses against civilians.

“I considered it my duty," Peskov told the Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda. “When I went there, I had to change my last name. Nobody really knew who I was.”

Nikolai said he served with Wagner for about six months and was also honored with the Medal for Courage.

Opening up to the newspaper during the interview, Nikolai said that he could not figure out how to serve in Ukraine on his own and so he had to "turn to my dad... and he helped me with that."

It was not revealed during the talk as to what name he used when he served with Wagner.&nbsp;He said he might need to use the fictitious name again that he used before.&nbsp;

This comes after the head of the Wagner group&nbsp;Yevgeny Prigozhin on Friday confirmed that the Kremlin spokesperson’s son had served as a gunner with the group.&nbsp;

Prigozhin claims that Nikolai Peskov spent six months as a loader for an ammunition supply vehicle at PMC Wagner while using fictitious paperwork bearing a different last name. The Wagner commander said that Peskov underwent a three-week training programme at their camp in Molkino.

"After that, when he left for Luhansk, it was necessary to expand the combined artillery battalion, and he was sent to join an Uragan [multiple rocket launcher] crew," Prigozhin said, adding Nikolai "showed courage and heroism, just like all the others".

Russia's elite and children of government officials have already come under fire for refusing to fight in Ukraine.

Former Russian president and a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Medvedev, said on Sunday that if the G7 decided to impose export restrictions on Russia, Moscow would retaliate by cancelling the Black Sea Grain Agreement, which permits crucial grain shipments from Ukraine.

"This idea from the idiots at the G7 about a total ban of exports to our country by default is beautiful in that it implies a reciprocal ban on imports from our country, including categories of goods that are the most sensitive for the G7," Medvedev said in a post on his Telegram channel.

According to last week's report by the Japanese Kyodo news agency, which cited sources within the Japanese government, the Group of Seven (G7) nations are proposing a blanket ban on exports to Russia.

Russia has threatened on many occasions to withdraw from the grain agreement, which is set to expire on 18 May.&nbsp;"In such a case, the grain deal - and many other things that they need - will end for them," he added.

According to reports, the G7 is debating changing its sanctions policy towards Russia. It includes proposals that shipments to Russia would be automatically prohibited unless they were on a defined list of goods that were permitted for exports.

As per the current rules, unless specifically blacklisted, products may be sold to Russia without any restrictions. Vladimir Putin's longtime supporter Medvedev serves as Putin's deputy at the powerful Security Council and is the chairman of a government commission on arms production for the conflict in Ukraine.

The Black Sea grain agreement, the only important diplomatic achievement during the 14-month battle in Ukraine, has been frequently criticised by Moscow.&nbsp;

The G7 agriculture ministers in a communique earlier called for&nbsp;the "extension, full implementation and expansion" of the grain deal.&nbsp;

According to the legislation, it is forbidden to give locations names that "glorify, perpetuate, promote, or symbolise" Russia or its "prominent, memorable, historical and cultural places, cities, dates, events, and figures who carried out military aggression against Ukraine and other sovereign countries." &nbsp;

Additionally, it prohibits the use of geographic indicators that were connected to "state totalitarian policies and practises related to the persecution of opposition figures, dissidents, and other persons" who opposed "totalitarian Soviet and totalitarian Russian regimes."

<h2>Euromaidan Revolution</h2>

This movement of changing Russian place names gathered steam during the Euromaidan Revolution in 2014. Streets named after Russians or Soviet history have been renamed. Monuments of historical Russian individuals have been demolished.&nbsp;

Viktor Yanukovych, a pro-Kremlin president, assumed office in 2010. He declined to ratify the Association Agreement with the European Union in November 2013.&nbsp;His reluctance to ratify the accord provoked demonstrations across Ukraine. The biggest demonstrations were held in Kyiv on Independence Square, also known as Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Ukrainian.

Yanukovych fled to Russia when the protests turned into a revolution that lasted until February 2014. By overthrowing the pro-Kremlin government, Ukrainians got to decide how they wanted their country to develop in the future, including changing place names from Russian to Ukrainian.&nbsp;

Russian Poet Alexander Pushkin's memorials were demolished in the spring of 2017 from places including Mykolaiv port city, Ternopil, and the western Zakarpattia Oblast.

Similar to this, a monument commemorating the Russian Empress Catherine II was demolished in Odesa on December 28. This was done following an online vote by locals.

The statue was built in 1900 when Odessa was a part of the Russian Empire. For years, activists have petitioned to have it taken down.&nbsp;

For more than a year, Ukraine has been fighting for its life against a military superpower that enjoys overwhelming advantages in terms of funding, weapons, and manpower. One of the few areas were Ukraine has managed to stay consistently ahead of Russia is in the use of innovative military technologies.

China’s ambassador to France has sparked anger and dismay among eastern European countries after questioning the sovereignty of former Soviet countries including Ukraine. The Chinese ambassador Lu Shaye, in an interview on Friday (April 22) seemingly suggested that countries that emerged after the fall of the Soviet Union are not really sovereign.&nbsp;

What did the Chinese envoy say?

Speaking with France’s LCI news channel, Shaye said, “These ex-USSR countries don’t have actual status in international law because there is no international agreement to materialize their sovereign status.”&nbsp;

The remarks were made after he was asked whether he believes Crimea is part of Ukraine or not. Crimea was annexed by Russia back in 2014. The Chinese ambassador, in this context, also said, “it depends on how you look at the problem. There's history. Crimea was Russian at the start.”

These comments have not only cast doubt not just on Ukraine which is in the midst of an invasion by Russia but on most eastern European countries which emerged as independent nations after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, many of which are also members of the European Union.

How have the countries reacted?

After the interview, France and eastern European countries released statements in response to the Chinese envoy’s comments. Paris, late Saturday, stated its “full solidarity” with all the allied countries affected, which it said had acquired their independence “after decades of oppression”.&nbsp;

The French foreign ministry also said that it had “learned with consternation about the statements from the ambassador.” It added, “It remains up to China to say whether these statements reflect its position which we hope not to be the case.”

Following the interview,&nbsp;Ukraine condemned what it called “absurd” comments from the Chinese ambassador. On Sunday, the&nbsp;Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhaylo Podolyak said the status of post-Soviet countries was “enshrined in international law”.&nbsp;

He added, "It is strange to hear an absurd version of the ‘history of Crimea’ from a representative of a country&nbsp;that is scrupulous about its 1,000-year history.”&nbsp;

The Chinese ambassador Lu Shaye, in an interview on Friday (April 22) seemingly suggested that countries that emerged after the fall of the Soviet Union are not really sovereign. What did the Chinese envoy say? Crimea was annexed by Russia back in 2014. The Chinese ambassador, in this context, also said, “it depends on how you look at the problem. There's history. Crimea was Russian at the start.” These comments have not only cast doubt not just on Ukraine which is in the midst of an invasion by Russia but on most eastern European countries which emerged as independent nations after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, many of which are also members of the European Union. The statement came after he arrived a day prior, in Portugal, and was faced with protests as many stood waving Ukrainian flags and holding photographs depicting conflict atrocities outside the Brazilian embassy in Lisbon.&nbsp;

Lula’s stance has not only angered the people in Lisbon but also the West and Kyiv for suggesting Ukraine and Russia are to blame for the conflict that began over a year ago. Addressing the press&nbsp;in&nbsp;the Portuguese capital, on Saturday, beginning his first visit to Europe after&nbsp;being elected president he called for a “negotiated” settlement between Kyiv and Moscow.&nbsp;

“While my government condemns the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, we support a negotiated political solution to the conflict,” said Lula, following a meeting with the Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. He added, “Brazil does not want to take part in this war. Brazil wants to create peace.”

Last week, the Brazilian president faced criticism&nbsp;after he said the United States and its European allies should stop supplying arms to Ukraine as they are prolonging the war. “If you are not making peace, you are contributing to war,” said Lula.&nbsp; 
 
Subsequently, the White House accused him&nbsp;of “parroting Russian and Chinese propaganda”, while the Ukrainian government has criticised the Brazilian president for treating "the victim and the aggressor” the same way.

Protests in Lisbon over Lula’s visit

Portugal is a founding member of NATO and also sent military aid to Ukraine while the country’s president has previously said that Kyiv had the right to defend itself. On Saturday, Rebelo de Sousa also acknowledged that Portugal has a “different position” on the ongoing conflict adding that “for a road to peace to become a possibility, Ukraine must first have the right to respond to the invasion.”

The capital city of Portugal witnessed protests, on Friday, after many gathered outside the Brazilian embassy in Lisbon over Lula’s recent remarks. 
 
A Ukrainian refugee named Yana Kolomiiets who was among the protesters and had been in Portugal for four months and said she felt “terrible” after hearing Lula’s comments last week, reported Reuters. The 27-year-old also said, “It has made me so upset because I don't know how the president of Brazil can support (Russian President Vladimir) Putin…this killer.”

More than 3,000 people in the Russian city of Belgorod were evacuated after another explosive object was found at the site where Moscow’s warplane accidentally fired a weapon which caused a blast, on April 20. The evacuation took place on Saturday (April 22) and a couple of hours later people returned home after the explosive was disposed of.&nbsp;

Around 3,000 people evacuated

Belgorod region governor Vyacheslav Gladkov took to messaging app Telegram, on Saturday and said that the Russian military’s explosive technicians have found “an explosive object” and decided to “disarm it at the range.” The range that the governor was referring to was a training ground.&nbsp;

“The operational headquarters decided to evacuate 17 apartment buildings within a radius of 200 metres. According to preliminary data, it is more than 3,000 people. Anyone who needs help with temporary accommodation, it will be provided,” said Gladkov, on Saturday, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

Hours later the governor said that people had started to return to their homes after the “shell” was removed from the area.&nbsp;

Russian jet accidentally fires weapon

The evacuation came days after a Su-34, a supersonic fighter-bomber jet accidentally fired a weapon in Belgorod which is near the border with Ukraine. This incident took place amid what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Kyiv.&nbsp;

After reports of an explosion in the Russian city, Moscow’s defence ministry released a statement saying that when a “Su-34 plane of the Russian Aerospace Forces was performing a flight above the city of Belgorod, an emergency release of an air ordnance occurred.”&nbsp;

The accidental discharge of aviation ammunition at the time had damaged some buildings and injured at least three people, as per media reports. However, the governor later said four cars and four apartment buildings were damaged while the blast had also left a crater measuring 20 metres across one of the main streets in the Russian city.&nbsp;

While footage of the site shows piles of concrete on the street, several damaged cars and a building with broken windows, reported Reuters, adding that one video also showed what appeared to be a car upside down on the roof of a store.

The dramatic advertisement comes after reports from Russian media and British military intelligence that Moscow is looking to reinforce its forces in Ukraine by enlisting up to 400,000 more soldiers.

The recruitment of Russian men in the Ukraine war is marred with controversy at a time when the casuality data for soldiers is yet not ascertained. A recent estimate from the US Defence Intelligence Agency claims that up to 43,000 Russians have died in the conflict thus far. It also estimated that up to 17,500 Ukrainians also died.

This comes amid reports that many refuse to pick up mail at their official address to escape service. But with this bill approved now, electronic notifications will be sent too. &nbsp;

If people do not report at their military enlistment office within 20 days of receiving the summons, without a good cause, temporary limits will be placed on them.

They might not be allowed to register as entrepreneurs, register their cars and houses and other properties, have their licences cancelled, and have their loan requests denied.&nbsp;

The Russian authorities have been downplaying the possibility of a second mobilisation call after launching a partial mobilisation drive in September.

The earlier drive forced tens of thousands of Russian men to flee the country to avoid being drafted. Recruitment posters for professional troops have appeared across the Russian capital with the message, "Our Profession is to defend the Motherland."

As the Ukraine conflict wages on, the Russian army is seeking gunners, military doctors, drivers, and tank commanders, according to the ads. In return, they are promising the prospective recruits "respect, an honourable profession, and decent pay."

TV channel Dozhd, also known as TV Rain, widely recognised as one of the very few remaining Russian channels critical of Putin is facing heavy losses due to sanctions. Vera Krichevskaya, one of the co-founders said the channel was losing anywhere between $1 million to $1.5 million per year in potential revenue due to sanctions on its YouTube channel. Notably, after the Russian invasion, Google-owned YouTube suspended all monetisation programmes for users in Russia. The decision was taken after advertisements were already suspended in the country. About 65 per cent of TV Rain’s audience is in Russia but with no revenue coming from them, the channel has to rely on non-Russia-based audience for advertising income. Krichevskaya said she had been in touch with executives from Google and YouTube to persuade them to relax the rules but so far, no progress had been made. “I found it very strange that when the west goes on about the importance of freedom of speech and western European values, a company like Google has no flexibility," Krichevskaya was quoted as saying by The Guardian. “They give us zero income and zero profit on Russian audiences, making it near impossible to operate.” The channel was forced to leave Russia after the Putin administration accused it of broadcasting false information about the war. Since then, it had been operating from Lativa until the authorisation was revoked by the country's media watchdog. However, in January this year, the Netherlands granted a five-year broadcasting licence to the channel. “At around 22:15 (10:15 pm) Moscow time on April 20, when a Su-34 plane of the Russian Aerospace Forces was performing a flight above the city of Belgorod, an emergency release of an air ordnance occurred,” the Russian Defence Ministry was quoted as saying by TASS. An investigation into the incident is underway.&nbsp;

According to the report, the defence ministry confirmed that an unspecified number of buildings were damaged following the accidental discharge of aviation ammunition and confirmed that there were no casualties. The Su-34 is a supersonic fighter-bomber jet.&nbsp;

The defence ministry did not say which weapon was involved. Belgorod region governor Vyacheslav Gladkov announced a state of emergency on Thursday, confirming the blast on the messaging app Telegram and said that there was a crater measuring 20 metres across one of the main streets in the Russian city.&nbsp;

The Belgorod region is one of the several parts of southern Russia which has reportedly witnessed explosions, with targets being the fuel and ammunition stores, since the beginning of what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine which began in February last year.&nbsp;

Russian jet accidentally fires weapon in its own city Belgorod near Ukraine

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday (April 21) that all NATO allies agreed that war-torn Ukraine would eventually become a member of the intergovernmental military alliance, but the main focus was to ensure that Ukraine prevails against Russia, the news agency Reuters reported.

Speaking to reporters ahead of a meeting of the Ukraine defence contact group at Ramstein air base in Germany, Stoltenberg said that once the war in Ukraine ends, Kyiv must have "the deterrence to prevent new attacks".

"I said in Kyiv yesterday that Ukraine's future is in the Euro-Atlantic family and all&nbsp;NATO&nbsp;allies have agreed that Ukraine will become a&nbsp;NATO&nbsp;member. But the main focus now is, of course, on how to ensure that Ukraine prevails," he said.&nbsp;

Since the beginning of the Russian offensive in February last year, Ukraine has been seeking to be allowed into NATO. But according to Western diplomats, it remained a distant prospect.&nbsp;

Friday's announcement came a day after Jens Stoltenberg visited Ukraine, his first since the beginning of the war. The NATO secretary-general met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelesnky. Stoltenberg also visited Bucha and laid a wreath in memory of those who died during the occupation of the town and visited a local church.&nbsp;

In a joint press conference with Stoltenberg on Thursday, President Zelensky said, "Now, when the majority of people in NATO countries and the majority of Ukrainians support the entry of our country into the alliance, it is time to take the appropriate decision."

Zelensky also said that a NATO summit in July could become historic if Ukraine received a formal invitation to join.&nbsp;

Stoltenberg meanwhile, said, "Ukraine's future is in the Euro-Atlantic family, Ukraine's future is in NATO, all allies agree on that."

During Friday's meeting at the&nbsp;Ramstein air base, Ukraine pressed allies for long-range weapons, jets and ammunition. And US Defence Secretary&nbsp;Lloyd Austin told reporters that Washington and allies would discuss providing more air defence and ammunition for Ukraine.&nbsp;

“Ukraine urgently needs our help to shield its citizens and infrastructure and forces from Russia’s missile threat,” Austin added.&nbsp;

Amid Russian missiles and drones that have been causing panic in Kyiv for the past year, it is a fireball-like phenomenon now in the skies which is causing anxiety in the conflict-ridden country.&nbsp;An intense burst of light in the skies over the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv on Wednesday set off panic buttons in the country's defences which initiated an air raid alarm to caution people.

As soon as the images and videos of the bright light in Kyiv skies went public, netizens started calling it out as an alien invasion. The Ukrainian military also put rest to theories that flash light was from a Russian attack.&nbsp;“After verification and clarification, the information regarding the possible use of enemy aircraft or an air strike with missile weapons was not confirmed,” the military said.

Ukraine's space agency said that the light was “probably related” to meteorite entering into Earth’s atmosphere. Air sirens did initially sound in the city, as officials thought a NASA satellite or a incoming missile was heading towards the city. However, the US space agency denied that the bright flash was a satellite of theirs.

Head of Kyiv's military administration Sergiy Popko said on Telegram that a "bright glow" was seen up in the skies over Kyiv. The phenomenon was witnessed at around 10:00 pm upon which an air raid alert was activated.&nbsp;

Even though the alert was put in place, the air defence was not in operation, as per Popko.

Memes started to flood the internet making odd guesses about what the glowing light in the sky could be. Amid all the panic and anxiety, a post by the Ukrainian military claimed that it was a NASA satellite reentering the Earth's atmosphere.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"According to preliminary information, this phenomenon was the result of a NASA space satellite falling to Earth," Popko wrote on Telegram. "While social media is amused by flying saucer memes... please do not use the official symbol of the Air Force to create memes!" the Ukrainian air forces said.

In a conversation with a UK media portal, the officials said that RHESSI satellite was in orbit when the flash of light was seen over Kyiv skies. Margetta added that the spacecraft would re-enter Earth's atmosphere in night time. He added that NASA along with US defence department is tracking the satellite.
