Ukrainian Air Force said early on Tuesday (July 18) that Russia launched overnight air attacks on Ukraine's south and east using drones and possibly ballistic missiles.&nbsp;

On the Telegram messaging app, the Air Force said that the southern port of Odesa and the Mykolaiv, Donetsk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions were under threat of Russian drone attacks.&nbsp;

The air force also said that Russia may be using ballistic weaponry to attack the regions of Poltava, Cherkasy, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv and Kirovohrad.&nbsp;

The attack comes against the backdrop of Russia suspending its participation in the Black Sea grain export deal on Monday, just hours before it was supposed to expire. Moscow said that it will only return to the deal if its conditions are met.&nbsp;

The deal, brokered by the United Nations and Turkey last July, aimed to alleviate a global food crisis by allowing Ukrainian grain blocked because of the conflict to be exported safely.&nbsp;

Air attacks on Ukraine: Russia possibly using ballistic missiles, says Kyiv

USAID chief Samantha Power on Monday (July 17) announced more than USD 500 million in humanitarian assistance as she visited Ukraine. According to the United Nations, about 17 million people are in need of help following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Power made an announcement about the humanitarian assistance at the State Emergency Services headquarters in Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine last year, tens of thousands of Ukrainian civilians and soldiers on both sides have been killed. Millions have fled their home.

The latest aid from USAID will be provided through the United Nations and other non-governmental organisation partners. The aid will support and give relief to those who have been displaced or have been otherwise affected by the war. It will provide them with emergency food assistance, healthcare and safe drinking water.

USAID Administrator Power was shown equipment provided to Ukraine's State Emergency Services by Washington and met Ukraine's famous mine-sniffing dog, Patron.

USAID chief unveils more than $500 million aid during Ukraine visit

The remains of a Russian soldier were exhumed by a Ukrainian search unit in an eastern Donetsk village on Saturday (July 15). They said that the soldier was killed in combat months ago.&nbsp;

Ever since the Russia-Ukraine war started, the search unit named 'Platsdarm' has been working in the eastern part of the country to retrieve both civilian and military remains from the battlefield.&nbsp;

Oleksii Yukov, who is the head of the search unit, said as quoted by the news agency Reuters that they had found the 445th Russian soldier near Dolyna.&nbsp;

That particular region was on the frontline until Ukraine regained parts of the Donetsk region in September last year. Yukov told the news agency that the Ukrainian military had flagged former Russian military positions to his team.&nbsp;

As translated by Reuters, Yukov said, "This is the 445th body (of a Russian soldier in east Ukraine). And imagine how many of their (Russian) families they have destroyed and how many of our people (Ukrainians) they have destroyed."&nbsp;

"This is the madness they brought along (when invading Ukraine). They have no life, and we have no life. This is crazy, just crazy. And just like that, these Russian boys are lying here on foreign land, nobody needs them except for their relatives and friends, because, I think, the state doesn’t really need them there. Nobody, no problem," he added.&nbsp;

He said, "Their relatives might also care about them. Therefore, you need to understand that our boys are also lying somewhere, and we are coming back for them anyway. If we do not come back, then at least we will get them in exchange so that they (Russians) see that we treat the dead like human beings and want the same attitude towards the dead from the other side. Ukrainian search unit exhumes remains of Russian soldier in Donetsk

United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Sunday (July 16) that redoubling support for Ukraine was the single best way to aid the global economy, adding there was a massive difference that foreign assistance was making to the war-torn country.

United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Sunday (July 16) that redoubling support for Ukraine was the single best way to aid the global economy, adding there was a massive difference that foreign assistance was making to the war-torn country. Speaking on the sidelines of the G20 finance minister summit in the Indian state of Gujarat, Yellen said, "Ending this war is first and foremost a moral imperative. But it's also the single best thing we can do for the global economy." "Budgetary support is critical to Ukraine's resistance," Yellen told reporters in Gujarat's Gandhinagar. "By helping keep the economy and the government running, we are giving Ukraine the support it needs so it can fight for freedom and its sovereignty," she added. The US treasury secretary also highlighted that one of her government's core goals was to combat Russia's efforts to evade Washington's sanctions. Yellen's remarks came four days after leaders of G7 promised to support Ukraine for as long as it took to defeat the Russian offensive. A report by the news agency AFP said the G7 plan provides a framework under which individual countries would agree to bilateral deals with Ukraine detailing the weapons they would give and the response they would make if Russia ups the ante. Eager to work with China on areas of mutual interest Yellen also said on Sunday that she was eager to work with China in areas of mutual interest, including debt restructurings for poorer countries. Yellen said that her visit to Beijing last week helped put the US-China relationship on "surer footing" and that the world's two biggest economies had an obligation to the world "to cooperate on areas of mutual concern". "There is much more work to do. But I believe this trip was an important start. I am eager to build on the groundwork that we laid in Beijing to mobilise further action," she told reporters in Gandhinagar. The treasury secretary also said she would continue to push hard at the G20 finance minister summit for the full and timely participation of all bilateral official creditors on pending debt restructurings. Morning brief: Russia-Ukraine war updates, further rain predicted in Delhi, and more

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has failed in a last-ditch effort to secure an invitation for Ukraine to join the NATO alliance the leaders of the 31 members.

Zelensky accuses NATO of 'showing disrespect'

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday (July 13) that Russia will regard Western F-16 fighter jets sent to Ukraine as a "nuclear" threat because of their capacity to carry atomic weapons.&nbsp;

Russian foreign ministry quoted Lavrov as saying, "We will regard the very fact that the Ukrainian armed forces have such systems as a threat from the West in the nuclear sphere."&nbsp;

Ever since the war began, Ukraine has asked the West to supply advanced weapons, long-range missiles, battle tanks and fighter jets. Most of the demands were met, but allies baulked to provide the war-ravaged nation with long-range missiles and jets in order to avoid direct conflict with Russia.&nbsp;

"Russia cannot ignore the ability of these aircraft to carry nuclear weapons. No amount of assurances will help here," Lavrov said.&nbsp;

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday (July 13) that Russia will regard Western F-16 fighter jets sent to Ukraine as a "nuclear" threat because of their capacity to carry atomic weapons. Russian foreign ministry quoted Lavrov as saying, "We will regard the very fact that the Ukrainian armed forces have such systems as a threat from the West in the nuclear sphere." Ever since the war began, Ukraine has asked the West to supply advanced weapons, long-range missiles, battle tanks and fighter jets. Most of the demands were met, but allies baulked to provide the war-ravaged nation with long-range missiles and jets in order to avoid direct conflict with Russia. "Russia cannot ignore the ability of these aircraft to carry nuclear weapons. No amount of assurances will help here," Lavrov said. "In the course of combat operations, our servicemen are not going to sort out whether each particular aircraft of this type is equipped to deliver nuclear weapons or not." F-16 jets in Ukraine will be seen as 'nuclear' threat: Russia

British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has been facing flack after his "We are not Amazon" comment for Ukraine went viral. Members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) gathered in Lithuania's capital to discuss future plans for Ukraine.&nbsp;

While speaking on the sidelines of the summit, Wallace&nbsp;recalled the time he warned the war-torn nation that its international allies were "not Amazon" and Kyiv needed to show gratitude for the supply of weapons&nbsp;in order to persuade Western politicians to give more.&nbsp;

As he spoke to reporters, the UK minister mentioned the time he had travelled to Ukraine last year, where he received a shopping list of weapons.&nbsp;

Referring to the tech and retail company, Wallace &nbsp;said, "You know, we're not Amazon." He added, "I told them that last year when I drove 11 hours to be given a list."&nbsp;

The two-day NATO summit did not confirm (or deny) an invitation for Kyiv to join the military alliance on a clear timeframe, and now, Wallace's comments have led to embarrassment among the allies - some even referred to it as discord among Ukraine's so-called friends.&nbsp;

Wallace told British media: "There is a slight word of caution which is, whether we like it or not, people want to see gratitude. Sometimes you're persuading countries to give up their own stocks. And yes, the war is a noble war and yes, we see it as you doing a war not just for yourselves but also our freedoms."

Weapons supply to Ukraine: Allies embarrassed over Ben Wallace's we are 'not Amazon' remarks?

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview that the armed confrontation in Ukraine will continue until the West gives up plans to dominate and defeat Moscow.&nbsp;

The interview with an Indonesian newspaper was published on Wednesday (July 12). Lavrov said that the goal of the "US-led collective West" is to strengthen its global hegemony.&nbsp;

Russia has often warned the West against supplying precision and long-range weapons to Ukraine during the ongoing war, which started last year in February.&nbsp;

The Russian minister told the Kompas newspaper that Kyiv is ignoring Indonesia's peace plan and instead promoting its own "package of ultimatums".&nbsp;

According to a transcript of the interview published on Russia's foreign ministry website, Lavrov asked, "Why doesn't the armed confrontation in Ukraine come to an end?"

"The answer is very simple – it will continue until the West gives up its plans to preserve its domination and overcome its obsessive desire to inflict on Russia a strategic defeat at the hands of its Kyiv puppets," said Lavrov, who is due to attend the East Asia Summit and ASEAN Regional Forum in Jakarta this week.&nbsp;

Russia launches air strike on Kyiv ahead of NATO summit

Ukrainian forces on Sunday (July 9) pressed on with their campaign to recapture Russian-held areas in the southeast. Russian accounts said that heavy fighting gripped areas outside the city of Bakhmut. Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said one of his units was deployed in the area. Taking to Telegram, Ukrainian Defence Minister Hanna Maliar said that heavy fighting raged in two areas of the southeast. "We are consolidating our gains in those areas," Maliar said. She added that Russian troops were defending Bakhmut while Ukrainian forces registered "a certain advance" on the city's southern flank. Ukraine has launched a counteroffensive which is so far focusing on capturing a cluster of villages in the southwest and also retaking areas around Bakhmut. Reuters reported that there were no changes in position to the north of Bakhmut and Ukrainian forces remained engaged in fighting west of the city and near Lyman, further north in Donetsk. Ukrainian forces advance in south; four killed in Russian strikes in Zaporizhzhia

The two-day NATO Summit is set to begin in Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital. In just a few hours, and the agenda will be the war in Ukraine.

Joining NATO and joining EU are two different process: Brussels

US President Joe Biden said that war-ravaged Ukraine is not ready to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), an intergovernmental military alliance of countries from Europe and North America.

US President Joe Biden said that war-ravaged Ukraine is not ready to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), an intergovernmental military alliance of countries from Europe and North America. However, Biden also said that the US and other allies will continue to provide Ukrainian forces with the security and weaponry needed for the Russia-Ukraine war, which was started last year in February. During an interview with CNN published on Sunday (July 9), Biden said, "I don't think there is unanimity in NATO about whether or not to bring Ukraine into the NATO family now, at this moment, in the middle of a war." "For example, if you did that, then, you know – and I mean what I say – we're determined to commit every inch of territory that is NATO territory. It's a commitment that we've all made no matter what. If the war is going on, then we're all in war. We're at war with Russia, if that were the case," Biden added. Also read: Biden arrives in UK to meet PM Sunak, King Charles; will hold talks with Erdogan at NATO summit The US president further said, "I think we have to lay out a rational path for Ukraine to be able to qualify to be able to get into NATO." Biden also noted that he refused Putin's demands before the war for a commitment not to admit Ukraine because the alliance has "an open-door policy". Biden says Ukraine not ready for NATO membership in the middle of war with Russia

Amid concerns over the use of cluster bombs by Ukraine for its counteroffensive against Russia, Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov tweeted on Saturday (July 8) that cluster munitions would not be used in Russia. "Ukraine will use these munitions only for the de-occupation of our internationally recognised territories. These munitions will not be used on the officially recognized territory of Russia," Defence Minister Reznikov said. We welcome the decision of the US to provide Ukraine with the new liberation weapons that will significantly help us to de-occupy our territories while saving the lives of the Ukrainian soldiers. Cluster munitions will be used only in the fields where there is a concentration of Russian military," he added. Reznikov also said that his government would keep a strict record of the use of these weapons and the local zones where they would be used. "We will report to our partners about the use of these munitions, and about their efficiency to ensure the appropriate standard of transparent reporting and control," the defence minister further said. The opposition Many allies of the United States (US), including the United Kingdom (UK) and Canada, have opposed Washington's decision to send cluster bombs to war-torn Ukraine. On Friday, the US announced that it would supply Ukraine with the widely banned cluster munitions for its counteroffensive against occupying Russian forces, the news agency Reuters reported. The cluster bombs are part of an $800 million security package that brings total American military aid to more than $40 billion since the beginning of the Russian offensive. Cluster munitions are currently prohibited in over 100 countries. The US, Russia and Ukraine have not signed on to the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM), which bans the production, stockpiling, use and transfer of weapons. 'No to cluster bombs' On Saturday, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that Britain was a signatory to the convention that prohibited the production or use of cluster munitions and discouraged their use. "We will continue to do our part to support Ukraine against Russia's illegal and unprovoked invasion. We have done that by providing heavy battle tanks, and most recently long-range weapons. Hopefully, all countries can continue to support Ukraine. Russia's act of barbarism is causing untold suffering to millions of people," Prime Minister Sunak added. In a statement, Canada said, "We do not support the use of cluster munitions and are committed to putting an end to the effects cluster munitions have on civilians – particularly children." "Canada is fully compliant with the Convention and we take seriously our obligation under the Convention to encourage its universal adoption," the statement added. Spain's Defence Minister Margarita Robles, meanwhile, said her country had a firm commitment that certain weapons and bombs could not be delivered under any circumstances, Reuters reported. Addressing a press conference in Madrid on Saturday ahead of the July 23 national election, Defence Minister Robles said, "No to cluster bombs and yes to the legitimate defence of Ukraine, which we understand should not be carried out with cluster bombs." United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also opposed the use of cluster munitions and expressed support for the convention. Ukraine war: Won't use cluster bombs in Russia, says Kyiv

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war sparked massive concerns over the nuclear attack. As the world continues to fear that the next nuclear disaster could be in Eastern&nbsp;Europe, a report by the Financial Times mentioned that Chinese President Xi Jinping warned his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin against the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine.&nbsp;

The report cited Western and Chinese officials as saying that the Chinese officials privately take credit for convincing Russia to stop veiled atomic threats.&nbsp;

It was also mentioned that Xi warned Putin face-to-face during his state visit to Moscow in March, which was one of his first trips outside China after strict lockdown measures under his zero-Covid policy.&nbsp;

Russia has often warned of an escalation in war and also said that the West's continued support for Ukraine could lead to a nuclear war.&nbsp;

The concerns were further raised when Belarus hosted Russian nuclear weapons. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko insisted that their deployment did not violate international agreements.&nbsp;

Did Xi Jinping personally warn Vladimir Putin against nuclear attack in Ukraine?

The Russian military claimed on Tuesday (July 4) that it shot down five drones in an attempted "terrorist" attack near Moscow. The defence ministry said in a telegram post, "this morning, an attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out a terrorist attack using five UAVs against targets in Moscow region and New Moscow was foiled". No casualties were reported during the drone interceptions.&nbsp;

The ministry further said that four of the drones were intercepted by air defences in the New Moscow region and the fifth one was "suppressed by electronic warfare and crashed on the territory of the Odintsovo district of the Moscow region".&nbsp;

Frights were disturbed amid the chaos, and landings and takeoffs at Moscow's Vnukovo were restricted for several hours early on Tuesday before normal operations resumed after 0500 GMT. A number of flights from Russia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt were diverted.&nbsp;

"The Kyiv regime's attempt to attack an area where civilian infrastructure is located, including the airport, which incidentally also receives foreign flights, is yet another act of terrorism," said foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

"The international community should realise that the United States, Britain, France - permanent members of the UN Security Council - are financing a terrorist regime," she said.&nbsp;

Russia claims Ukraine attacked Moscow with at least five drones

Deputy Ukrainian Defence Minister Hanna Maliar said on Sunday (July 2) that the Russian forces have registered gains near the eastern Ukrainian town of Svatove as she noted that the Ukrainian forces are resisting a Russian onslaught in eastern areas of the front and face difficulties in the northeast.&nbsp;

In a Telegram post, the defence official said, "Fierce fighting is taking place there. The enemy is attacking Bilohorivka and Serebrianka." She referred to the two smaller villages south of Svatove — a region where Russian forces have been active. She said, "Fierce fighting is taking place...The situation is quite complicated."&nbsp;

Ukraine says Russia made some advances on eastern front, fighting rages in south

A Ukrainian official said on Friday (June 30) that the troops are advancing in all directions in their counteroffensive against occupying Russian forces. Ukraine says its counter-offensive is currently underway, and claims that the nation was making advances on all fronts. Kyiv has also said that the forces have reasserted control over clusters of villages in the southeast.&nbsp;

But Russia still holds swathes of territory in the east, south and southeast and also has not acknowledged the Ukrainian gains.&nbsp;Instead, it says that Ukraine's military is suffering heavy casualties.&nbsp;

As reported by news agency Reuters, Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar told Ukrainian television: "If we talk about the entire frontline, both east and south, we have seized the strategic initiative and are advancing in all directions."&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Maliar added that the Ukrainian troops were moving "confidently" on the flanks around the eastern city of Bakhmut, which is held by Russian forces. She also said that the main fighting was going on around the city.&nbsp;

She further mentioned that Kyiv's forces were moving with mixed success and mainly levelling the frontline in the south. "In the south, we are moving with varying success, sometimes there are days when it is more than a kilometre, sometimes less than a kilometre, sometimes up to two&nbsp;kilometres," she said.

According to Maliar, the effectiveness of the counteroffensive should be evaluated by "a lot of different military tasks" and not just by advances and the liberation of settlements.&nbsp;

She said that "all these tasks are being carried out and only the military can assess this correctly and accurately, and according to their assessment, everything is going according to plan".&nbsp;

A Ukrainian official said on Friday (June 30) that the troops are advancing in all directions in their counteroffensive against occupying Russian forces. Ukraine says its counter-offensive is currently underway, and claims that the nation was making advances on all fronts.

A Ukrainian official said on Friday (June 30) that the troops are advancing in all directions in their counteroffensive against occupying Russian forces. Ukraine says its counter-offensive is currently underway, and claims that the nation was making advances on all fronts. Kyiv has also said that the forces have reasserted control over clusters of villages in the southeast. But Russia still holds swathes of territory in the east, south and southeast and also has not acknowledged the Ukrainian gains. Instead, it says that Ukraine's military is suffering heavy casualties. As reported by news agency Reuters, Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar told Ukrainian television: "If we talk about the entire frontline, both east and south, we have seized the strategic initiative and are advancing in all directions." Meanwhile, Maliar added that the Ukrainian troops were moving "confidently" on the flanks around the eastern city of Bakhmut, which is held by Russian forces. She also said that the main fighting was going on around the city. Also read: Lavrov responds to failed mutiny, says Russia will be 'stronger' She further mentioned that Kyiv's forces were moving with mixed success and mainly levelling the frontline in the south. "In the south, we are moving with varying success, sometimes there are days when it is more than a kilometre, sometimes less than a kilometre, sometimes up to two kilometres," she said. According to Maliar, the effectiveness of the counteroffensive should be evaluated by "a lot of different military tasks" and not just by advances and the liberation of settlements. She said that "all these tasks are being carried out and only the military can assess this correctly and accurately, and according to their assessment, everything is going according to plan". He also spoke about the counter-offensive and said that it is moving more slowly than desired. Notably, the Ukrainian officials have also said the "main event" of the counteroffensive has yet to start, and that Ukraine has not yet sent its main troop reserves into combat. Russia-Ukraine war: Kyiv claims its forces have advanced in all directions in counteroffensive

Russia Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday (June 30) that the nation will emerge "stronger" in the aftermath of the failed mutiny, which the mercenary group Wagner launched last weekend.&nbsp;

During a briefing in Moscow, Lavrov told journalists: "Russia has always overcome all its problems... it comes out stronger and stronger. It will be the same this time, too. This process has already begun."&nbsp;

On being asked if Russia can guarantee its stability after the Wagner mutiny, Lavrov said, "We are not obliged to explain to anyone or give any guarantees. We act transparently, our president and all the political powers of the country spoke about it."

"If someone in the West has any doubts - it's their problem. We ourselves have serious doubts in the adequacy of many Western leaders," he added.&nbsp;

Answering a question from foreign media, Lavrov said: "Thank you for your concern about our national interests, but you shouldn't be worried".&nbsp;

The revolt posed the most serious threat to President Vladimir Putin's decades-long rule.

Member nations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have tentatively agreed to ask Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to continue to remain chief of the 31-member transatlantic alliance, Associated Press reported citing US officials familiar with the decision. The member states have reportedly reached a tentative agreement to ask Stoltenberg to extend his tenure by one year.

NATO is soon to hold its annual summit in Vilnius, Lithuania. The summit will be held on July 11-12. AP reported that it had been conveyed to Stoltenberg by US President Joe Biden that it was difficult to reach a consensus on picking a new leader.&nbsp;

Stoltenberg, a former Norwegian PM, has been at the helm of NATO since 2014. His term was set to expire last year, but it was extended for a second time after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Jeanne Shaheen, a Democratic Senator from New Hampshire, who is a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is leading a delegation to Vilnius next month. She told AP in an interview that she expected Stoltenberg's term to be extended and called it "very good news for NATO and for the allies."

“I think Stoltenberg has proved to be critical as the challenges to NATO have unfolded over the last couple of years,” Shaheen said. “He’s been very adept at working with all the NATO countries and I think any time we’re in the middle of a crisis — as we are now with what’s happening in the war in Ukraine — being able to maintain that kind of stability and leadership that he’s provided is really critical.”

Biden has already told Stoltenberg that he would welcome any development that sees the latter being NATO chief for a longer time.&nbsp;

NATO leaders have now reportedly agreed with Biden's sentiment that Stoltenberg should stick around for more time especially as no end to the Ukraine war is in sight and Sweden's inclusion in the bloc is still an uncertainty.

Douglas Lute, who served as US ambassador to NATO under President Barack Obama, said extending Stoltenberg’s tenure offers NATO the path of least resistance.

“What the alliance does not need right now is a lack of solidarity over who to succeed him,” Lute said. “The simplest thing is for him to be extended.”

Lute was quoted by AP.

<h2>Other candidates</h2>

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was considered to be a favourite after a meeting with Biden recently. NATO has been keen to name a woman to the top post.&nbsp;

However, Frederiksen has publicly said that she was not seeking the job.&nbsp;

British PM Rishi Sunak has also lobbied Biden on behalf of British Defence Minister Ben Wallace.

Poland is opposed to the next secretary-general coming from a Nordic state given Stoltenberg's long tenure, AP reported citing the US official.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Stoltenberg's predecessor, is from Denmark. Poland is now reportedly lobbying that the next secretary-general of the bloc should come from a Baltic nation.&nbsp;

NATO countries open to extending Stoltenberg's tenure: Report

It's cheap, recycled, and has centuries of tradition: "shimogoe" or "fertiliser from a person's bottom" is finding new favour in Japan as Ukraine&nbsp;war has led to hike&nbsp;in the price of chemical alternatives.

As in several parts of the world, the use of "night soil" to fertilise crops was once common in Japan.

However, the advent of sewage systems and treatment facilities, as well as chemical fertilisers, saw it fall out of fashion.

About a decade ago, Japanese treatment facilities wondered if they could revive interest to avoid sewage sludge disposal — a costly and potentially environmentally damaging process.

But enthusiasm was limited until Russia's invasion of Ukraine sent the cost of chemical fertilisers soaring.

That has been a bonanza for a facility in northern Japan's Tome, where sales of shimogoe were up 160 per cent year-on-year by March 2023.

For the first time since the city began producing the fertiliser in 2010, it has sold out.

The demand is easy to explain, said facility vice president Toshiaki Kato. "Our fertiliser is popular because it is cheap, and it is helping farmers cut soaring costs," he told AFP.

"It is also good for the environment."

Made of a combination of treated sewage sludge from septic tanks and human waste from cesspits, the fertiliser goes for 160 yen ($1.10) per 15 kg.

That's about a tenth of the price of products made from imported raw materials.

In southwestern Japan's Saga too, officials report sales are up two to three times.

And dozens of tour groups from municipalities elsewhere in the country have visited, eager to replicate their programme.

<h2>Historic origins</h2>

Shimogoe was a key fertiliser in Japan's pre-modern Edo era, said Arata Kobayashi, a fertiliser specialist who has written journal articles on the subject.

In the early 18th century, the one million residents of Tokyo — then called Edo — "produced" an estimated 500,000 tonnes of fertiliser a year.

It was big business, involving gatherers, transporters and farmers, "and all of them benefited from the recycling system," Kobayashi said.

They "didn't create a recycling system on purpose... it was the result of everyone pursuing profit."

Japan's government has encouraged the revival, citing environmental benefits and concerns about food security since Russia's invasion.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries hopes to double animal manure and human waste use by 2030, with a goal of them accounting for 40 per cent of all fertiliser use in Japan.

In Miura outside Tokyo, vacuum trucks carrying human waste arrive one after another at a treatment facility.

Water is removed and then bacteria ferment the remaining solids in huge tanks.

Methane produced during the process is burned to supply the facility's hot water and electricity, and the final product is a soil-like powder that can be spread on fields.

"We produce 500 tonnes of fertiliser annually," said Kenichi Ryose, facility manager at Miura Biomass Centre.

"This fertiliser is particularly good for leaf vegetables, like cabbage," he added.

Ryose said "harmful materials like heavy metals are removed from processed sewage sludge before arriving," at the plant.&nbsp;

In the United States, there have been recent concerns about the levels of so-called forever chemicals (PFAS) in fertiliser made from sewage.

An environment ministry official said similar concerns had not been reported in Japan, but noted there are no current guidelines for PFAS levels in soil.

"We're in the process of developing a scientifically reliable way to measure PFAS and studying how to regulate it," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

<h2>'Dirty mud'</h2>

The sun is shining as the trucks arrive, and despite the facility's odour-absorbing machines, a distinct aroma fills the air.

The smell has proved something of a problem, admitted Nobuyoshi Fujiwara, 41, who runs a lettuce farm in Yokosuka, north of Miura.

He started using Shimogoe last year, "because I wanted to cut costs and for the social good" of recycling waste.

But "we can't use it in fields near houses, because there are complaints about the smell".

"Also, you have to spread four or five times the volume that you use with regular chemical fertilisers," he explained.

That's the case for any type of manure but can be a turnoff for some farmers because it is more work.

He concedes that the fertiliser faces something of a branding issue.

"The Chinese characters that are used for sludge — 'dirty mud' — are not great," he said.

"Even though we produce safe food, I imagine that for those who don't know much about it, the impressions people have of fertiliser made from human faeces might not be good."

He doesn't want to hide his use of the fertiliser though. In fact, he would like to see it publicised.&nbsp;"An official certification system would be helpful to promote our produce," he said.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said on Wednesday (June 28) during a visit to Ukraine that the presence of Wagner troops in Belarus could be a potential "threat" to the countries of the region.&nbsp;

Duda told reporters in Kyiv, "It is difficult for us to exclude today that the presence of the Wagner Group in Belarus could pose a potential threat to Poland, which shares a border with Belarus, a threat to Lithuania... as well as potentially to Latvia."&nbsp;

On Tuesday, a jet belonging to Russian mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin flew out of Rostov and landed near Minsk, which was later confirmed by Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko. The Belarusian leader was quoted as saying by the state media Belta that Prigozin was currently in Belarus.&nbsp;

He said that "security guarantees have been given" as promised to Russian President Vladimir Putin. "I see Prigozhin's been flying aboard this plane - yes, indeed he’s in Belarus today," he further added.&nbsp;

Lukashenko mentioned that Belarus is not building any camps for the group, but will accommodate them if they want. However, their presence itself has become a matter of concern for the Polish President.&nbsp;

The presidents of Poland and Lithuania made a surprise visit to Kyiv on Wednesday and met their Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky.&nbsp;

Duda said in a joint news conference that Poland and Lithuania will do everything they can to ensure that Ukraine becomes a member of NATO as soon as possible.&nbsp;

Notably, NATO members unanimously said that Ukraine must get all support during the war against Russia. They are affirmative about Ukraine's inclusion in NATO but have yet to resolve differences over how to address Kyiv's desire for membership.&nbsp;

Lithuania and Poland have been among the staunchest supporters of Ukraine in NATO and the EU, and have been calling for accepting it into both. Meanwhile, Lithuania is buying NASAMS air defence systems for Ukraine from a Norwegian company.&nbsp;

Polish President Andrzej Duda said on Wednesday (June 28) during a visit to Ukraine that the presence of Wagner troops in Belarus could be a potential "threat" to the countries of the region. Duda told reporters in Kyiv, "It is difficult for us to exclude today that the presence of the Wagner Group in Belarus could pose a potential threat to Poland, which shares a border with Belarus, a threat to Lithuania... as well as potentially to Latvia." On Tuesday, a jet belonging to Russian mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin flew out of Rostov and landed near Minsk, which was later confirmed by Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko. The Belarusian leader was quoted as saying by the state media Belta that Prigozin was currently in Belarus. He said that "security guarantees have been given" as promised to Russian President Vladimir Putin. "I see Prigozhin's been flying aboard this plane - yes, indeed he’s in Belarus today," he further added. Lukashenko mentioned that Belarus is not building any camps for the group, but will accommodate them if they want. However, their presence itself has become a matter of concern for the Polish President. Notably, NATO members unanimously said that Ukraine must get all support during the war against Russia. They are affirmative about Ukraine's inclusion in NATO but have yet to resolve differences over how to address Kyiv's desire for membership. Lithuania and Poland have been among the staunchest supporters of Ukraine in NATO and the EU, and have been calling for accepting it into both. Poland says Wagner troops in Belarus 'threat' to countries of the region

The death toll from a Russian missile strike on a restaurant in eastern Ukraine rose to 11 on Wednesday, including children, as the Kremlin insisted Russian forces only hit military-linked targets. Three children were among the dead and at least 60 people were injured in the strike on the Ria Pizza restaurant in the town of Kramatorsk.

In a major snub to Ukraine's war effort against Russia, Switzerland blocked Bern-headquartered Ruag AG from selling nearly 100 Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine, it was revealed on Wednesday. The blocking of the sale, however, is not related to a separate sale of 25 Leopard 1&nbsp;tanks of the Swiss army to the German company Rheinmetall AG, Bloomberg reported.&nbsp;

The Swiss cabinet said that such a sale would be contrary to the country's War Material Act and would entail an adjustment of Switzerland's neutrality policy. The country’s current rules don’t allow for weapons manufactured in Switzerland to be delivered to countries at war or in an armed conflict.

In November 2022,&nbsp;the country&nbsp;imposed an embargo on Swiss munitions being sent to either Russia or Ukraine.

<h2>What exactly does Switzerland's blocking of Leopard 1&nbsp;tanks entail?</h2>

The rejection reportedly applies to 96 non-operational Leopard 1 tanks. These tanks, while belonging to the Swiss arms manufacturer Ruag AG, are currently stored at a facility in Italy.&nbsp;

It was proposed that the tanks would be refurbished in Germany and then sent to Ukraine.

<h2>Switzerland blocks arms sale to Ukraine: Why?</h2>

The Swiss government said that the arms sale request to Ukraine from a country-headquartered manufacturer is "inconsistent with applicable law", pointing to the principle of the Swiss neutrality — one of the main principles of Switzerland's foreign policy which dictates that Switzerland is not to be involved in armed or political conflicts between other states.&nbsp;

The survey was conducted just days after Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the private Wagner mercenary company, launched and then called off a mutiny over what he charged was the Russian defence ministry's mishandling of the war in Ukraine.

The findings appeared to provide firmer backing for US&nbsp;President Joe Biden's policy of doing "whatever it takes" to assist Ukraine in recapturing territory that Russia seized in an initial assault in 2014 and its full-scale invasion 16 months ago.

"This definitely reinforces Biden's decision to be all-in on this," said William Taylor, a former US&nbsp;ambassador to Ukraine now with the U.S. Institute of Peace.

"The Republican leadership of the House and Senate will also take heart from this," Taylor said. Some right-wing Republican lawmakers have opposed continuing US&nbsp;military support for Ukraine.

The Biden administration has approved 41 weapons packages for Ukraine totaling more than $40 billion since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched what he calls "a special military operation" in February 2022.

The online Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted nationwide, collecting responses from 1,004 adults, including 400 Democrats and 383 Republicans. It had a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of about 4 percentage points in either direction.

The poll found that 76% of Americans believe that providing aid to Ukraine demonstrates to China and other rivals that the United States has "the will and capability to protect our interests, our allies and ourselves."

In other findings, the survey said large majorities of Americans - 67% and 73% - are more likely to support a candidate in next year's U.S. presidential election who will continue military aid to Ukraine and one who backs the NATO alliance.
