Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Russia may once again attempt to involve Belarus in its ongoing war against Ukraine. According to Ukrainian intelligence reports cited by Kyiv, there are signs of increased military preparations near the Belarus-Ukraine border, including road construction and artillery positioning.

Zelensky cautioned that these developments could indicate a renewed effort by Moscow to expand the conflict’s scope. Belarus previously allowed Russian forces to use its territory during the early phase of the invasion, making the country a key strategic factor in the war’s evolution. The warning highlights growing concerns about potential regional escalation.

New reports and official statements from Ukraine and Poland are raising concerns that Russia may be using Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet system to help guide drone attacks inside Ukraine. Originally supplied to Kyiv after Russia’s invasion in 2022, Starlink became a critical communications lifeline for Ukrainian forces and emergency services. However, defence analysts now say Russian drones may be using similar satellite connectivity to improve targeting accuracy, including in attacks on civilian infrastructure. Poland’s foreign minister has accused the service of profiting from war crimes, while SpaceX denies allowing offensive military use.

US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright has said that while India is free to buy oil from any country in the world, it should not be sourcing it from Russia. Speaking at a press conference, Wright argued that New Delhi’s decision to purchase discounted Russian oil amounted to indirectly funding Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
India making a trade-off, says Wright
“There are lots of oil exporters in the world. India doesn’t need to buy Russian oil. India buys Russian oil because it is cheaper. Nobody wants to buy Russian oil; they have to sell it at a discount. Trump’s administration has already imposed 50 per cent tariffs on India, with half of that penalty linked to its energy trade with Moscow.Echoing Trump’s reasoning, Wright said that India, China and Turkey were buying Russia’s sanctioned oil, which in turn was fuelling the war. “President Trump’s greatest passion is peace in the world… The Russian war in Ukraine, of course, is brutal. 'We don’t want to punish India': US tells India to buy oil from 'anywhere, just not Russia'

Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov slammed Washington’s tariff threats, saying that “ancient civilisations” such as India and China will not bend to American ultimatums. Speaking on Russia’s Channel 1 programme The Great Game, Lavrov said US “demands” to cut energy ties with Moscow were backfiring. Instead of isolating Russia, he argued, they were pushing countries to “look for new energy markets, new resources, and pay more”.
How did Lavrov describe India and China’s stance?
Lavrov pointed to New Delhi and Beijing’s response to US pressure. “Both China and India are ancient civilisations, and to use this language with them, ‘either stop doing what I don’t like, or I will impose tariffs on you’, well, that won’t work,” he said. He added that beyond economic strain, there was also “moral and political opposition” to Washington’s approach.
Why has the US targeted India over Russian oil?
The Trump administration has repeatedly criticised India for continuing to buy oil from Moscow during the Ukraine war. Washington imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods in July, followed by another 25 per cent weeks later, taking the total to 50 per cent from 27 August. White House trade adviser Peter Navarro accused India of “profiteering” through Russian oil deals.“Indian refiners were in bed with Russian refiners immediately after the invasion. They make money off us via unfair trade and many workers get screwed,” Navarro told CNBC International. He further alleged that “Brahmins profiteering” were acting at the expense of ordinary Indians.
What have US officials said about trade with India?
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also criticised India’s tariff system in a recent interview, saying, “India brags about having 1.4 billion people but won’t buy even a small amount of American corn.” He warned New Delhi to lower tariffs or face “a tough time” in trade relations with Washington. On new restrictions targeting Moscow, Lavrov dismissed concerns. “Frankly speaking, I don’t see any problem…. An enormous amount of sanctions, unprecedented for that period, were imposed during President Donald Trump’s first term,” he said. He added that during Joe Biden’s presidency, sanctions had “replaced diplomacy” as the West avoided compromise.

Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov criticised US tariff threats, insisting India and China, as “ancient civilisations,” will not yield to Washington’s ultimatums over Russian oil, sanctions, and energy ties during the Ukraine conflict.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro accused India of “profiteering” through Russian oil deals. “Indian refiners were in bed with Russian refiners immediately after the invasion. They make money off us via unfair trade and many workers get screwed,” Navarro told CNBC International. He further alleged that “Brahmins profiteering” were acting at the expense of ordinary Indians. Despite U.S. officials accusing India of profiting from the Ukraine war, new reports allege that President Donald Trump is earning a 10% commission on U.S. weapon sales to Ukraine, funneled through European intermediaries. The revelation calls into question America's role in the conflict, with critics claiming Trump has turned the military into a profit-driven venture while deflecting blame onto others like India.

"Some things never change," he insisted ahead of the Ukrainian president's Washington visit.
