Ukrainians prepare for harsh wartime winter

The Ukrainian government made it clear on Tuesday once again that it will not negotiate with Kremlin until the Russian military has left Ukrainian territory including Crimea. President Volodymyr Zelensky added that Ukraine will continue its fight even if it is "stabbed in the back by its allies”.

"Once again - the restoration of territorial integrity, respect for the U.N. Charter, compensation for all damages caused by the war, punishment of every war criminal, and guarantees that this will not happen again. These are completely understandable conditions," Zelensky said in his address.

There have been certain reports which claimed that Ukraine can take a softer stance when it comes to negotiations with Russia after a prolonged discussion with the United States. The reports also suggested that it can be the result of doubts regarding US support for Ukraine after the mid-term elections.

According to Reuters, Zelensky’s comments were made in relation to the reports and he went on to say that "we always received insane Russian responses with new terrorist attacks, shelling or blackmail".

Ukraine and Russia to sign grain deal resuming Black Sea exports

The chief executive of Ukraine's cricket board says it "ticks all the boxes" to become an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and that the game would not survive if it was denied entry. Ukraine is expected to get second-tier membership at the governing body`s board meeting this month, entitling the war-torn country to Twenty20 International status and funds from the ICC, which has earmarked $30.8 million for its 96 associate members this year.

The Ukraine Cricket Federation (UCF) has been organising cricket for the last two decades and has a pool of 15,000 students, most of them Indian, at the senior level. Its chief executive Kobus Olivier told Reuters it met all the ICC requirements before Russia invaded.

"We ticked all the boxes on Feb. 24 when the war started," he said. "I have so much belief in this process ... and I am absolutely confident Ukraine will be an associate member of the ICC." Olivier, a South African, said the ICC should take note of how the EU "fast-tracked" Ukraine`s candidate status to join the bloc, saying it set a "very good precedent".

UCF President Hardeep Singh has made arrangements for national team players to train in India while Olivier set up base in Zagreb after fleeing Kyiv. He is effectively running the UCF`s junior and women cricket programmes from Zagreb and engaging refugees, mostly mothers and children, in cricket-in-the-park sessions three days a week.

"These refugee mothers are actually going to make the Ukrainian national team in a couple of years," said Olivier, whose own escape from Kyiv, along with his four pet dogs, is the subject of a documentary.
Olivier is also planning to host a `Ukrainian Freedom Cup` in Zagreb next month with teams from Serbia, Slovenia, Hungary and Czech Republic. If the ICC rejects its membership application the consequences for the game in Ukraine would be dire, Olivier said.

"It will be the end of cricket in Ukraine," he said. The Lord`s Taverners, a British charity, and the MCC Foundation, the charity arm of cricket`s lawmakers, have given support to the UCF but sponsorship funds have dried up.

ICC membership would make the UCF eligible for government funding and could attract new sponsors.
"It will be a snowball effect," said Olivier.

Cricket: Ukraine hopeful of ICC membership for game to survive in war-torn country

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has already been going on for more than 100 days and with both sides engaged in intense warfare, no end seems to be in sight. However, Ukraine’s defence minister Oleksiy Reznikov believes that it is “possible” that the war with Russia will be over by the end of 2022. During his address at an international security forum, Reznikov said that it is possible that the war can get over in less than a year considering the amount of support Ukraine receives from the rest of the world. He also sounded a dire warning for other countries if Russia is not stopped.

The United States and a number of western countries have been sending considerable number of arms and ammunitions to the Ukraine in order to help them combat the Russian invasion.

Germany will become the latest European power to send ‘heavy weapons and complex systems’ to Ukraine after the country’s lawmakers voted in favour of aiding Ukraine with ammunition.

The petition, which went on vote in the lower house of the German parliament – The Bundestag, was passed with 586 votes in favour, 100 against and seven individuals abstaining from the vote.

In addition to the supply of arms to Ukraine, it was also decided that Germany will be sending more troops in order to boost the NATO forces in eastern Europe. The petition also specified that armoured vehicles and anti-aircraft systems will comprise most of the arms sent to Ukraine.

While there was an overwhelming support in favour of sending the weapons to bolster the war effort in Ukraine, some were worried that the move make look like a declaration of war. The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) were completely opposed to the move and according to Deutsche Welle, their senior lawmaker said that it will end up prolonging the war in Ukraine.

The socialist Left Party of Germany also took a similar tone in the issue and warned the country’s chancellor Olaf Scholz that this move can increase the changes of a potential nuclear war.

Would you believe Sean Penn once considered joining Ukraine’s resistance against Russia.

At the inaugural edition of a magazine, Sean Penn said, “I was at the gas station in Brentwood the other day and I’m now thinking about taking up arms against Russia? What the fuck is going on?”

Sean Penn was in Ukraine filming a documentary when Russia invaded the country. He revealed he’d met the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Zoom two years ago, “early on in the pandemic.” “We first started discussing a potential documentary about his country that wasn’t focused particularly on the war,” the actor said.

“And since then there’s been a lot of exchanges between us. Then I went and met him face to face the day before the invasion. And I was with him during the invasion, on day one.”

“The only possible reason for me staying in Ukraine longer last time would’ve been for me to be holding a rifle, probably without body armour, because as a foreigner, you would want to give that body armour to one of the civilian fighters who doesn’t have it or to a fighter with more skills than I have, or to a younger man or woman who could fight for longer or whatever. So, where I am in life is short of doing that, but if you’ve been in Ukraine [fighting] has to cross your mind. And you kind of think what century is this?”

Ukraine certainly knows how to keep the morale high of the citizens even as it faces the mighty Russian army.

Ever since the Russian invasion began on February 24, several tales of bravery have emerged.

From confronting Russian soldiers to blocking the passage of a Russian convoy from entering the city, people have contributed in their own way as others fight as soldiers.

Hence, close on the heels of the 94th Academy Awards ceremony on Monday, Ukraine handed out its “Ministry of Defence of Ukraine Oscars 2022”, giving awards under various categories, while mocking the Russian military.

Seven videos selected by the defence ministry highlighted various aspects of the war. From drone footage, to displaced people of Ukraine singing in bomb shelters, the tweets have honoured the bravery shown by the people of the country.

The Best Picture Award has been given to the courage shown by the Ukrainian state border guards telling the Russian warship to “Go F*** Yourself" while defending Snake Island in response to demands to surrender.

Switzerland’s president Ignazio Cassis said that Russia’s invasion in Ukraine is driven by “devastating madness” and Switzerland is prepared to pay the cost for protecting freedom and democracy.

Although Switzerland generally refrains from taking sides in most global disputes, they have decided to impose the same sanctions on Russia as the European Union. However, Cassis made it clear that Switzerland’s neutrality was not at stake due to the decision and it was taken after proper deliberation.

However, he said that Switzerland could not simply stand by in the “confrontation between democracy and barbarism” and the country was prepared to take an economic hit as a result.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has warned that nine out of 10 Ukrainians could face extreme economic vulnerability if the Russian war goes on for another year.

The early projection released by the UNDP on Wednesday stated that the ongoing conflict can undo 18 years of socio-economic achievements, with almost one-third of the population living below the poverty line and a further 62 per cent at high risk of falling into poverty within the next 12 months.

“The war in Ukraine is causing unimaginable human suffering with a tragic loss of life and the displacement of millions of people. While the need for immediate humanitarian assistance to Ukrainians is of the utmost importance, the acute development impacts of a protracted war are now becoming more apparent,” said UNDP Administrator, Achim Steiner on the official website.

“An alarming economic decline, and the suffering and hardship it will bring to an already traumatised population must now come into sharper focus. There is still time to halt this grim trajectory.”

Before the launch of the Russian invasion, an estimated 2 per cent of Ukrainians lived under the poverty line, but the situation will get worse if the conflict goes on, according to Steiner.

"We estimate that up to 18 years of development gains of Ukraine could simply be wiped out in a matter of 12 to 18 months," Steiner said in an interview with Reuters.

Earlier, Ukraine’s government economic adviser Oleg Ustenko said that the Russian forces have destroyed $100bn worth of infrastructure, buildings, roads, bridges, hospitals, schools, and other physical assets.

It was further stated that 50 per cent of Ukrainian businesses had shut down completely.
