Climate change is wreaking havoc across the globe. The changes are evident, but there are the so-called “deniers”. On one hand, experts raise concerns and warnings over climate-related issues, but some people call it propaganda. The United Kingdom suffered due to an unprecedented heatwave. Research released on Friday (July 29) stated that this month’s record-shattering heatwave, a climate change caused by human activity, is at least 10 times more likely to occur in Britain. But a report by BBC highlight the unnecessary and unprecedented levels of social media trolling done to target weather forecasters. The report mentioned that when the entire country was baking, some people targeted the channel’s forecasters. They claimed that they received hundreds of abusive tweets or emails questioning their reports. ALSO READ | Despite gas crisis and inflation surge, Eurozone economy grows faster than expected As quoted by the website, BBC meteorologist Matt Taylor said he had “never experienced anything like it in nearly 25 years working in weather”. “It’s a more abusive tone than I’ve ever received. I switched off a bit from it all as it became too depressing to read some of the responses,“ BBC’s Matt Taylor was quoted as saying. The abuses also targeted Met Office and Royal Meteorological Society forecasters. Royal Meteorological Society chief executive Professor Liz Bentley said that the members faced “public ridicule, accusations of lying or suggestions of being blackmailed”. She said, “Anecdotally, abusive comments increase when the message about climate change is intrinsic to the story.” Alex Deakin, who is the lead meteorologist at Met Office, said, “It’s scary in some ways.” Deakin added: “I find it more frustrating and offensive for my colleagues — some of the great minds in climate science. Show a bit of respect and do a bit more research rather than just believe Bob down the pub or Tony on YouTube.” ALSO READ | Twitter-Elon Musk to head for trial over buyout deal worth $44 billion on October 17 Their report attached several screenshots of tweets after hiding the name and Twitter handle, to show the kind of language used by some users to address the forecasters. Tweets include messages like “it’s just summer” and saying that they are spreading “alarmism” and “hysteria”. The tweets asked to “stop scaremongering”. There are several other examples also with texts containing personal insults and messages for BBC Weather and its presenters. But the question is, why people are in denial? Eastern England recorded an all-time high temperature of 40.3 degrees Celsius and the hot spell sparked fires that destroyed dozens of homes in London. Overall, at least 34 locations in Britain registered record highs on July 20, when the heatwave peaked over western Europe. Tomasz Schafernaker, the BBC meteorologist, said: “What frustrates me most is when I’m accused of twisting the truth. As meteorologists, we report facts. There is no conspiracy.” Matt Taylor described his experience of covering the heatwave. He said it was “really emotional” and it felt “like a real turning point in public attitude and realisation to what has happened to our climate.” He added: “The weather is very emotive. It gets people so worked up. What’s good for some is bad for others and vice versa. Our climate has changed, so our reporting and response also has to change. All we’re trying to do is bring people the facts.” WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

Why are weather forecasters in the UK being trolled?

The ringleader of one of United Kingdom’s biggest money laundering operations has been sentenced to nearly a decade in jail. Abdullah Mohammed Ali Bin Beyat Alfalasi, the ringleader of the money laundering operation, will serve nine years and seven months in jail. He set up a network of couriers that sent about USD 127 million of street cash out of UK within two years. The cash was mainly sent to Middle East. Screws around Alfalasi were tightened after investigators caught hold of couriers in the money laundering network who were carrying the cash on flights in bags stuffed in suitcases.

The persons carrying the cash used tricks to fool sniffer dogs trained to locate hidden cash in baggage. The smugglers sprinkled coffee granules among the notes or sprayed air fresheners.

“There is no doubt that this was a considerable network under your charge, not your sole charge, you were a principal but it is clear that there were others involved,” said Judge Simon Davis while handing down the sentence. The judge was quoted by Bloomberg.

Middle East and, especially, United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been in focus due to smuggling of cash into the region. In March, global financial crimes watchdog placed UAE on gray list for failing to do enough to uncover illicit funds.

Alfalasi himself is an Emirati. He was arrested by police last year from a building in London’s upmarket Mayfair district. The building is owned by his wife.

Prosecutors said Alfalasi aided crime organisations in the UK and other European countries.

British news outlet The Guardian on Friday (July 29) lost the legal challenge mounted against a previous decision banning the media from court case about Prince Philip's will. In September 2021, a High Court judge had ruled that will of Prince Philip, the late husband of UK Queen Elizabeth, should remain sealed for 90 years to protect privacy of the queen. Media organisations were not allowed to attend the hearing which was held in private.

The Guardian then launched legal action against the attorney general and the queen's private lawyers. It argued that media should have had access.

The appeal was dismissed. Senior judges Geoffrey Vos and Victoria Sharp ruled that access to media would have caused a publicity storm.

"The hearing was at a hugely sensitive time for the sovereign and her family, and those interests would not have been protected if there had been protracted hearings reported in the press," the judges found.

Guardian lawyer Caoilfhionn Gallagher had argued that "an entirely private hearing such as this is the most serious interference with open justice".

However, the judges held circumstances of the case to be 'exceptional'. They also observed that UK probate rules "allow wills and their values to be concealed from the public gaze in some cases".

"It is true that the law applies equally to the royal family, but that does not mean that the law produces the same outcomes in all situations."

Air pollution is certainly not a good thing. Now, a finding by a UK government committee says that air pollution may raise the risk of Dementia, said The Guardian. The Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants advises British government on matters related to air pollution.

The 291-page report says that air pollution may raise the risk of 'cognitive decline' and of 'developing dementia' in older people.

As per experts, this may be due to air pollutants entering in body's circulatory system. This in turn may affect blood flow to the brain.

The authors said: "The epidemiological evidence reviewed fairly consistently reports associations between chronic exposure to air pollution and reduced global cognition and impairment in visuospatial abilities as well as cognitive decline and increased risk of dementia.

"Results are heterogeneous as regards to other cognitive domains such as executive function, attention, memory, language and mild cognitive impairment. The identified neuroimaging studies consistently report associations between exposure to air pollution and white matter atrophy."

As to the exact pollutant having such effect in humans, the reports says that various studies have various opinions.

According to numbers available with UK's National Health Service (NHS), about 850,000 people in the UK suffer with dementia.

According to government research, air pollution may make dementia more likely to occur. The Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants examined nearly 70 research that examined the long-term effects of exposure to pollutants on the brain before publishing its conclusions. The 291-page analysis comes to the conclusion that air pollution "likely" raises the risk of dementia development and rapid cognitive decline in older persons. According to experts, this is caused by contaminants that enter the bloodstream and alter blood flow to the brain.

As reported by The Guardian, the authors said, “The epidemiological evidence reviewed fairly consistently reports associations between chronic exposure to air pollution and reduced global cognition and impairment in visuospatial abilities as well as cognitive decline and increased risk of dementia. Results are heterogeneous as regards to other cognitive domains such as executive function, attention, memory, language and mild cognitive impairment."

It also notes that research on the pollutant that is most linked to these impacts is conflicting. The committee claimed it had offered suggestions for additional study to strengthen the case. According to the NHS, there are around 850,000 dementia patients in the UK. More conclusive evidence demonstrates that being exposed to air pollution raises the risk of heart disease. According to the British Heart Foundation, breathing in emissions can harm blood vessels by hardening and narrowing them, which increases the risk of clots, irregular heartbeats, and heart attacks.

It is possible to end the rapid outbreak of Monkeypox, a World Health Organisation official said on Tuesday. However, a few days ago, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the epidemic is at the highest degree of alert for a global health emergency and in fact, the world organisation later declared monkeypox as a global emergency. Rosmand Lewis, WHO technical lead on Monkeypox told the reporters, “We do at this moment still believe that this outbreak of monkeypox can be stopped with the right strategies in the right groups but time is going by and we all need to pull together to make that happen,” Reuters reported.

The virus was first discovered in monkeys and is spread primarily through close contact with an infected person.
A public health emergency of international concern as defined by the WHO is intended to prompt a coordinated global response and may make money available for cooperation on the sharing of vaccinations and treatments.

‘We do at this moment still believe that this outbreak of monkeypox can be stopped’: WHO official

Britain said Monday it had reluctantly agreed to host next year's Eurovision song contest, after organisers said there was no prospect of the pop extravaganza going ahead in war-torn Ukraine.

The BBC will now produce the world's biggest live music event, taking in performers from across Europe and Central Asia as well as Israel and Australia, in a UK city yet to be determined.

Ukraine won this year's contest, held in Italy, ahead of Britain's entry in second place. For the past month, it had insisted it could host next year's despite the Russian invasion.

But after the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) ruled that out on security grounds, the government in Kyiv acquiesced to a UK-hosted event with a strongly Ukrainian flavour.

Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko said that after "several rounds" of discussion, the EBU had given assurances of an "extremely high integration of Ukrainian context and presenters".

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that in phone talks last week with President Volodymyr Zelensky, they "agreed that wherever Eurovision 2023 is held, it must celebrate the country and people of Ukraine".

"As we are now hosts, the UK will honour that pledge directly -– and put on a fantastic contest on behalf of our Ukrainian friends," Johnson tweeted.

Johnson's spokesman added it had been the soon-to-depart prime minister's "strong wish" for Ukraine to host the 2023 edition, and found it "deeply regrettable" that was no longer possible.

UK to host 2023 Eurovision as Ukraine bows out

Labour leader Keir Starmer says his party will fight the 2025 election over the issue of economic growth. Starmer will make a speech at Liverpool to announce upcoming 2025 poll focus.

UK: Labour leader Keir Starmer to make a speech at Liverpool

It's mind blowing to see the brazen attitude the UK government (Tories) has taken despite the party gate, energy crisis, Rishi Sunak’s wife’s non-dom status and many scandals that have hit Boris Johnson and his merry band of criminals. They are unstoppable, and rightly so, because they have a solid majority in parliament and a mandate from English voters to do whatever they want to make Britain great again.

So! What’s the big fuss about this new draconian refugee and asylum policy introduced by Priti Patel? Well! Quite a few legal, moral, and ethical issues to start with, as the Tories have been keen since they were voted in 2010 to copy the Australian model of immigration and dealing with asylum seekers and refugees fleeing war torn areas.

The country of choice has a very recent history of genocide, and the current President, Paul Kagame, ex-military, has been in power since 2000 and is well known for his iron grip on the country. Kagame previously commanded the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), a Ugandan-based Tutsi militia. Human Rights Watch has claimed that since Kagame took office, people have been prosecuted for doubting the official government’s explanation of the genocide.

The rights body lists a long series of murders, disappearances, politically motivated arrests, and illegal arrests of critics, opposition members, and journalists. So much for the UK government’s record for dealing with tough regimes and dictators around the world when it suits them.

The initial costs of the Rwanda scheme are £120 million for up to five years. This excludes all other support costs which the British taxpayers have to bear, and also, we have to keep in mind the UK government's obscene levels of always going over-budget by millions. Does anyone remember the original cost of rolling out Universal Credit? It was £40 million over four years! It is now over £300 million and counting. Taking responsibility is not the strongest point of this Tory government. My question is, will all refugees and those seeking asylum be sent to Rwanda once they arrive in the UK? The answer is no for now, as only Ukrainians fleeing war are being offered full support and direct access to some benefits and other privileges that other refugees and asylum seekers can only dream about. The Tories once again show utter contempt for equality, immigration, human rights and other laws, both locally and internationally.

Finally, who gets the initial £120 million contract to move refugees to Rwanda? The usual suspect is Infosys, the company that was founded by Rishi Sunak’s father-in-law! Rishi Sunak’s wife, reportedly owns a 0.91% stake in the business, which has secured £50 million in UK public sector contracts since 2015. Rishi Sunak was a shareholder in this company but transferred his shares over to his wife before he became an MP in 2015. Akshata Murty’s stake in Infosys is believed to be worth £500 million, meaning she’s likely to be richer than the Queen. Rishi Sunak has not mentioned this stake or most of his wife’s other assets in his register of financial interests—a parliamentary information resource intended to ensure open democracy. Double standards, nepotism, and corruption are what the Tories do best.

Gardener Tray Veronica was stunned with a particular plant at a parish council display in Dorset, United Kingdom. She has a lot of experience identifying plants and she believed that six of the plants displayed at the parish were actually cannabis plants. This led to the parish coming up with an official statement and the plants were promptly removed. "I can identify most plants, so my head did a 360 when I spotted them in the council planter,” Veronica told BBC.

The village arranged a floral display in the parish and that was the first time that the plants were noticed by the West Parley Parish Council. According to the statement, they thought that one "may have been tampered with and amongst the flowers was a plant not part of this year's schedule".

"On the advice of the police, the plant was located, removed and has been secured by the parish council. An inspection has taken place of the parish's other planters, and this has not raised any further concerns," Councillor Andrew Parry, chairman of the council told BBC.

The incident has sparked a lot of rumours all over social media. The pictures of the plants were posted on the Facebook page of the parish and that resulted in a number of people trolling them for what seemed like cannabis plants in the mix.

However, there were people who defended the parish for the oversight and stated that "the seeds are common in bird seed mixes and some find their way into flowerbeds and easily self-seed."

On Sunday, both the candidates running to succeed Boris Johnson as prime minister of Great Britain pledged to stopping illegal immigration a top priority. They also supported the government’s plan to transfer migrants to Rwanda. After a backlash against Johnson’s scandal-plagued administration pushed the prime minister to announce his resignation, former finance minister Rishi Sunak and foreign secretary Liz Truss are vying to become Britain’s next leader.

The timing of any tax reduction has been a point of contention between the two contenders as Britain deals with rising prices, sluggish growth, and an increasing number of strikes. After Truss led polls of the Conservative Party members who will choose their new leader and the British prime minister, with the decision expected on September 5, Sunak on Saturday referred to himself as "the underdog." Both candidates outlined their plans on Sunday to continue the government's policy of deporting illegal immigrants to Rwanda, despite the European Court of Human Rights’ last month’s decision to stop the first deportation flight.

Truss, who is seen to be the favourite to win the leadership race, stated that she would seek out additional “third country processing partnerships like Rwanda,” which would boost the British Bill of Rights and enhance the border force by 20%. In prior leadership ballots, Sunak, who received support from the majority of Conservative lawmakers, declared that he would consider illegal immigration as “one of five major emergency responses” he would address in his first 100 days as prime minister.
