The monkeypox outbreak in the country is plateauing, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), and its rate of spread has reduced. Although the most current data indicates the outbreak's spread has slowed, Dr Meera Chand, director of clinical and emerging infections at UKHSA, warned against complacency.

As of August 4, there were 2,859 confirmed and highly probable instances of monkeypox in the UK, with over 99% of the cases affecting men, according to a statement from the nation's health authority. In addition, the UKHSA's recent investigation revealed that "monkeypox continues to be transmitted primarily in interconnected sexual networks of gay, bisexual, or other men who have sex with men."

In June, British authorities advised that gay and bisexual males who were more likely to contract monkeypox should be provided with a vaccine since the viral disease had begun to spread, primarily in Europe. On Tuesday, the United States supported injecting a smaller amount of the vaccine in between layers of the skin in order to deliver up to five consecutive doses rather than a single dose. The vaccine was made to be administered beneath the skin, into a layer of fat.

The so-called "dose-sparing" strategy has been tested with other vaccines, such as those for polio and yellow fever, but there isn't enough data to say whether it will be effective for monkeypox. The smallpox vaccine is being given to people who are more likely to come into touch with monkeypox, according to Dr Chand.

Monkeypox was classified as a "public health emergency of international concern" earlier this month by the World Health Organization, the organization's highest degree of notice. On Thursday, the United States also declared monkeypox a public health emergency, following the WHO's lead.

According to a health official in New York State, there may be hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of undiagnosed polio cases present. This comes after news broke last month that the virus had paralysed an unvaccinated man in Rockland County, New York. Genetic analysis has connected his case to the polio virus in London and Jerusalem. It has been advised that developed nations have increased immunisation rates. Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert, the health commissioner expressed her concern that polio might be spreading unknowingly. The majority of the cases are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, and hence are frequently overlooked. She further stated that it’s a serious issue for the world and not just limited to New York.

The US man had "vaccine-derived" polio, which occurs when a country uses a weakened version of the virus for immunisation. A more recent version of the vaccine, which does not include any live viruses, is used in the US and other developed nations. Currently, only 60 per cent are vaccinated in Rockland County. It also faced a measles outbreak in 2018. Field teams are sent to encourage vaccinations, especially amongst children, BBC reported.

Although there have been no confirmed cases in patients, the volume of polio samples found in sewage surveillance suggests that the virus has been spreading from person to person. The virus enters a body through the mouth or nose. The virus may spread to the central nervous system and can damage or kill the cells that control nerves.

US doctor warns of undiagnosed polio cases, UK to provide booster for kids under 10

Nearly 700 children have been strip-searched by London’s Metropolitan Police over a period of two years, most of them black boys, a new report has revealed.

According to the figures released by the Children’s Commissioner, kids aged from 10 to 17 underwent the ‘intrusive and traumatising’ strip searches between 2018 and 2020, in which almost three out of five (58 per cent) were black, and more than 95 per cent were boys.

The revelation comes close to the heels of the Child Q scandal in which a teenage black girl on her period was told to strip naked for a drug search by police without another adult present. No drugs were found.

Expressing concern over the ethnic imbalance, Children’s Commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza, who published the report on Monday, said the Child Q incident was not isolated and represented a ‘systemic problem’ within the Met.

“I am not reassured that what happened to Child Q was an isolated issue, but instead believe it may be a particularly concerning example of a more systemic problem around child protection within the Metropolitan Police,” she was quoted as saying.

“I remain unconvinced that the Metropolitan Police is consistently considering children’s welfare and wellbeing,’ she added.

De Souza questioned the necessity of this “intrusive and traumatising” practice after data revealed that in 53 per cent of cases no further action was taken.

“This low level of successful searches arguably indicates that this intrusive practice may well not be justified or necessary in all cases,” she was quoted as saying by The Guardian.

She also raised concerns about “a lack of appropriate oversight” on police practising strip searches after the data revealed that in one in five cases there was no way of knowing where it even took place.

Meanwhile, four Metropolitan Police officers are being questioned for gross misconduct by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in connection with the Child Q incident.

They have apologised and said it “should never have happened”.

This is not the first time Met has been accused of exhibiting racial bias. According to a 1999 report, the Met was found to be “institutionally racist”.

COVID-19: WHO’s recent report states new cases fell by 9% globally, deaths remain steady

Bank of England (BoE) on Thursday (August 4) unveiled the biggest interest rate rise in 27 years and also warned that Britain will sink into a lengthy recession later this year as inflation rockets even higher. Amid a cost-of-living crisis, borrowing is becoming more expensive.

Notably, this is the sixth consecutive hike by BoE's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) since December. Today, MPC voted 8-1 to lift its key rate by 0.50 percentage points from 1.25 per cent to 1.75 per cent.

The hike means there will be an immediate increase in mortgage bills for millions of homeowners on the tracker. Or even the variable mortgages that are in line with the BoE rate.

The BoE said that the "inflationary pressures in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe have intensified significantly" since May.

The bank added, "That largely reflects a near-doubling in wholesale gas prices since May, owing to Russia's restriction of gas supplies to Europe and the risk of further curbs. As this feeds through to retail energy prices, it will exacerbate the fall in real incomes for UK households and further increase UK CPI inflation in the near term."

Now, the BoE has anticipated that the UK economy would enter a period of recession at a time when the nation is facing a cost-of-living crisis. The bank said that the recession will last until late 2023. It was predicted that UK inflation will peak this year at just over 13 per cent. In June, UK inflation had already jumped to a four-decade high of 9.4 per cent.

The BoE added: "The latest rise in gas prices has led to another significant deterioration in the outlook for (economic) activity in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe. The United Kingdom is now projected to enter recession from the fourth quarter of this year."

Bank of England unveils biggest interest rate hike in 27 years, warns of lengthy recession

A 19-year-old UK woman, who was on a month-long cross-country road trip in the US along with a friend, has miraculously survived a bison attack. Mia, her friend and her friend's dog were hiking along a Custer State Park trail in South Dakota when they found themselves right in front of a bison.

"They came over a hill and saw down in the dip, quite a way ahead of them, they saw a big, male bison," Mia's father Matthew Dean was reported as saying by People.

While the natural thing to do at such a juncture would be to turn back, Mia and her friend decided otherwise since they had hiked for around two hours and Mia was extremely dehydrated.

They tried to sneak past the animal, but as luck would have it, the bison looked up and ran down the hill at them. It stopped in front of her for a few seconds before piercing its horn through Mia's thigh. The beast tossed her up around 10-15 feet in the air. Mia sustained a completely severed femoral artery, along with damage to the tibial and peroneal nerves.

"We are beyond fortunate that our daughter is still breathing, as she should have bled out in 2-8 minutes after the severed artery and the ambulance didn’t arrive for 20 minutes. It is a miracle that she is alive today," they wrote on the GoFundMe page created to gather funds for further treatment.

Nancy Pelosi, the US House Speaker, arrived in Taiwan amid an escalating crisis between the US and China. The Communist nation started conducting military drills close to the island nation. As tensions in the area rose before Pelosi’s visit, Chinese jets invaded Taiwan’s air defence zones. In other news, the race to become the UK’s next Prime Minister had to be postponed, which put a snag in the campaign. The decision was made as a result of information from the GCHQ space agency that cyber hackers were attempting to influence the results of the vote, as per a report by the Telegraph. Finally, the alleged lover of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the billionaire who owns the second-largest estate in London were blacklisted by the US as a part of the recent sanctions related to the Ukraine invasion.

A day after New Zealand House speaker warned the lawmakers to not use the Chinese app TikTok, the speakers of the House of Commons and House of Lords in the UK have also shut down the UK parliament's TikTok account.

Reportedly, Sir Lindsay Hoyle and Lord McFall, the respective speakers of the Commons and Lords were not consulted when the accounts was set up on the short-video sharing platform.

The two speakers released a joint statement and informed that the account had been closed with immediate effect.

“The account was an attempt to engage with younger audiences, who are not always active on our existing social media platforms, regarding the work of parliament. However, in light of your feedback and concerns expressed to us, we have decided that the account should be closed with immediate effect.”

Tory leaders Tom Tugendhat and Iain Duncan Smith were the ones who first raised the issue by writing a letter demanding the account be taken down. Soon, other Tory leaders became signatories to the letter. It is pertinent to note that both the conservative leaders have been banned from entering China for their vehement criticism of China's treatment of Uyghur Muslims.

After the UK parliament closed its account, TikTok expressed disappointment at the decision. A company spokesperson remarked:

Penny Mordaunt has announced her support for her former Tory leadership rival Liz Truss in the race to replace Boris Johnson. Mordaunt was eliminated from the Tory leadership contest in the fifth round.

Ex-rival Penny Mordaunt throws support behind Liz Truss in Tory leadership race

WION Dispatch: Penny Mordaunt backs Liz Truss to be the next UK Prime Minister

UK Foreign Minister Liz Truss, the current favorite to replace Boris Johnson and become next prime minister backtracked on a significant poll promise just a day after announcing it. This is being viewed as her first big misstep. She is currently facing ex-finance minister Rishi Sunak as she aims for the country’s top post.

Truss had set out plans to save billions of pounds in government spending. But leaders from Conservative party and opposition said that for this plan to become reality, salaries of public sector workers would have to be cut. These workers include nurses and teachers, outside of the wealthy southeast of England.

On Monday, as an apparent solution to this, Truss proposed introducing regional pay boards rather than having a national pay agreement, tailoring pay to the cost of living where people actually work.

However, on Tuesday (August 2), a spokesperson for Truss said: “Our hard-working frontline staff are the bedrock of society and there will be no proposal taken forward on regional pay boards for civil servants or public sector workers.”

Truss currently the favorite to win the PM race, was previously trailing Sunak. Even now, her lead over Sunak is slim.

A survey of 807 Conservative Party members by Italian data company Techne carried out July 19-27 found Truss was backed by 48%, compared with 43% for former finance minister Sunak.

This is suggestive of a much closer race.

Truss is already facing backlash on her public sector pay plan from within Conservative Party. But she enjoys confidence from her colleagues.

“This was a completely avoidable error, but I don’t think in the end it will stop her being prime minister,” said a Conservative lawmaker who supports Truss. The unnamed lawmaker was quoted by Reuters.

Sunak supporter Ben Houchen, the Conservative mayor of Tees Valley, said he was “speechless” at the proposal.

“There is simply no way you can do this without a massive pay cut for 5.5m people, including nurses, police officers and our armed forces outside London,” he had said.

UK: Liz Truss makes U-turn on pledge, first major campaign misstep

As per the weather services of France and England, July was the driest on record, which exacerbated the shortage of water that has led to the restrictions. Water firms are finding it difficult to adapt to the dry circumstances. The third heatwave is expected to hit this summer on Monday in the southeast before moving to Paris.

Just 9.7 millimetres of rain fell in France this month, which is suffering from a severe drought that has crippled farmers and forced broad restrictions on the use of water, as per Meteo France. According to the EPA, that was 84 per cent below the average levels seen for July between 1991 and 2022, making it the second-driest month since March 1961.

The average amount of rain in England as a whole was 23.1 millimetres, which is the seventh-lowest monthly total since the year 1953. The record-breaking high temperatures, which peaked at 40 degrees Celsius in the country, coincided with the minimal rainfall in both countries. The majority of England has entered a state of prolonged dry weather.

Most climate experts agree that the earth is warming as a result of carbon emissions from people burning fossil fuels, potentially increasing the severity of droughts, heatwaves, and other weather events.

Due to dry grasslands, farmers in France are having trouble feeding the animals, and irrigation has been prohibited due to lack of water. Commercial boats on the eastern river Rhine, which forms the boundary between France and Germany, are forced to operate at a third of their carrying capacity in order to avoid hitting the bottom due to extremely low water levels.

France and England experienced driest July on record exacerbating water shortage

Trains in southeast England were stopped due to a huge tortoise on the railway track. The rail officials notified the passengers and trains between Norwich and Stansted airport were delayed for over an hour. Greater Anglia Rail tweeted 'animals on the railway,' referring to the tortoise that was blocking the line.

Just after the announcement, Diane Akers, a traveller on a train to Norwich, tweeted a picture of the tortoise standing on the track and informed the company that the tortoise is alive but hurt. She said that the top of the tortoise’s shell appeared to be badly gashed. The traveller tweeted that she couldn’t believe seeing the tortoise.

@greateranglia There is a giant tortoise on the line past Eccles Road going away from Norwich it’s still alive but injured pic.twitter.com/jxX14Nx60P — Diane Akers (@di_akers_) August 1, 2022 × Also read | Preserved for centuries: Tortoise and her egg found in new Pompeii excavations The tortoise was hurt and was transferred to be attended to by a specialised team for treatment, as per Georgie, a customer service representative for the rail company. The representative updated the passengers, saying, "We have been informed that he will make a full recovery." Another passenger named Lydia Jane White also tweeted, "Train delayed because of a giant tortoise, too heavy to lift, stuck on the train tracks after having escaped from a local wildlife centre"—not something I thought I’d ever hear from a train driver! Huge tortoise on railway track blocks trains in UK

The United Kingdom has proposed the return of Elgin marbles of Athens, Greece after almost 200 years. In this process, UK is also expected to initiate the return of a host of Indian artifacts which were captured from India during the colonial times.

Is UK finally returning the Kohinoor back to India?

By the end of the decade, a national hosepipe ban and mandatory water measuring should be adopted throughout the United Kingdom, a message advisers have provided to the government as they prepare for a drought that threatens to cause significant disruption. In future, people will have to stand in lines to buy emergency bottled water from the back of lorries. The National Infrastructure Committee (NIC) forewarned the government four years ago that significant new investments in the country’s water supply infrastructure would be necessary by the 2030s. However, water companies made several changes, but every day, around 3 billion litres of water are still lost, The Guardian reported.

According to the chair of the committee, Sir John Armitt, in conversation with the Observer, plugging these leaks will cost somewhere around £20 billion. He continued by saying that if investments are not made now, it will cost more than twice as much to deliver bottled water to UK homes by a lorry when droughts hit the country more frequently.

Water measuring is considered the best way to reduce water use in the UK which has the highest water consumption in Europe. However, roughly around half of the households in England and Wales are expected to have water meters installed, and it was found that users with metered connections use 33 litres a day less than the 141 litres per day national average.

The Rivers Trust, one of the key organisations at the emergency National Drought Group meeting the government called last week as dry conditions expanded throughout England, supported the NIC’s appeal. Critics claim that despite numerous warnings, the government appears to have done nothing.

As per the Met Office, July was the driest month on record since 1911, with barely 24 per cent of the usual amount of rain for the month. The south and east are particularly hard hit, with July’s rainfall being just 14 per of the normal July from 2010 to 2020.

The demand for mandatory water metering was denied by the Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs.

UK must act now or face long queues for bottled water, warn experts

Couples in love and looking to get married can soon walk the aisle in their kitchen, lawn, park, beach, theme park or a cruise ship in the United Kingdom. Reportedly, the law commission, ushering in a plethora of reforms is set to loosen the wedding rules which earlier mandated the couples to only get married at a prescribed place of worship or registrar's office, in case of a civil marriage.

The proposal, if passed will allow the couples to get married, perhaps on a beach, in a park or if one is more adventurous, on a cruise ship, in the coastal waters, without the location needing a license. The proposed legislation also opens avenues for gay couples to get married, say, on military sites.

Additionally, the reforms would also extend the perimeter for the people acting as wedding officiants. Both religious and non-religious organisations could nominate an officiant. Independent officiants above 18 would have to apply to be individually registered and show they are 'fit and proper' individuals for the role

With sky-high inflation troubling most of the planet, the current outdated wedding laws were not allowing couples to tie the knot. Thus, the reforms are designed to offer couples a much more elaborate array of choices on where they'd like to get married.

It will likewise reduce the financial burden and help them plan weddings in a way that doesn't burn a hole in their pocket. Moreover, the backlog of weddings caused due to the Covid restrictions in the past two years can also be cleared after the passing of the law.
