Liz Truss tried to bolster her chances of becoming the next prime minister of Britain on Thursday by expressing backing for yet another national big ship as the nation recovered from the state of emergency temperatures and amid an increasing cost of living calamity. Nobody, not even the Queen, could have genuinely anticipated seeing another royal yacht in their lifetime. However, here we are 25 years later. The Royal Yacht Britannia is currently anchored next to the blue parking lot of the Ocean Terminal shopping centre in Leith, close to Edinburgh, and all of its clocks display the same time: 3:01 pm. On December 11, 1997, at that time, the Queen stepped off the ship for the final time. She was notably seen crying as the Royal Navy band played a farewell to the soon-to-be-mothballed vessel.

Why do some individuals get so aroused at the sight of a large British ship? Since 2016, when the newspaper and its then-columnist helped secure Brexit, The Daily Telegraph has been pushing for one. A new "national flagship" would be constructed, according to Johnson's announcement from last May, "representing the UK's increasing standing as a great, independent maritime trading nation." However, the Ministry of Defence is reluctant to foot the bill due to a £16 billion equipment budget backlog. Britannia was frequently used by the royal family and in approximately 1,000 state visits, but it was becoming more expensive to maintain, so Tony Blair decided not to recommission it in 1997. He later claimed that he regretted that choice.

But today, it's unclear who actually wants a yacht. Not the general public; according to YouGov, only 29% of people supported it in 2017. Not the royal family, who deemed it "not something we have asked for" and voiced their displeasure over plans to name a new ship after the Duke of Edinburgh. Truss is aware, however, that talking about a yacht while claiming she wants to fund it privately "allows her to pledge support for the idea without it ever happening," as Sunder Katwala, director of the think tank British Future, put it, six weeks before Conservative members choose Britain's next prime minister.

Snake bites are nasty, and though like other animals, snakes are vilified way more than their actual threat to humankind, snake venom running through veins literally dissolving our tissues and organs is not something anyone looks forward to while going camping.

In UK, it has been found that there is an increase in number of snakebites from foreign or 'exotic' snakes.

Why?

Because their is increase in the number of people keeping these species as pets.

A study has logged 321 exotic snake bites on 300 individuals between 2009 and 2020. These cases involved 568 different species. This comes to 30 snake bites a year. If you think the number is low then compare this with record from 2004 and 2010. An average of 22 snake bites per year.

The study has been published in the journal Clinical Toxicology. The data from the study has been taken from snake bite enquiries made to National Poisons Information Service (NPIS).

"Most of these bites occur to fingers, hands and wrists following deliberate handling interaction by people who keep snakes as part of their occupation or hobby," says David Warrell, a professor of tropical medicine at the University of Oxford in the UK. He was quoted by EurekaAlert.

"While ownership of many poisonous species requires a special licence in the UK, it is recognized that some individuals may keep these snakes illegally – meaning the true numbers of exotic snake bite injuries may be underestimated."

Foreign snakes are biting more people in the UK

The agreement to reopen Ukraine's Black Sea ports will free up millions of tonnes of grain that have been trapped in Ukrainian ports since Russia invaded on February 24. This will alleviate concerns about a possible worldwide food catastrophe that Russia's invasion has sparked. In another, the Omicron BA.5 sub-variant, which contains 5.1 million inhabitants, is what's causing the present wave in New Zealand. In the last seven days, there have been 64,780 active cases, while authorities claim that many illnesses go undetected. New Zealand's quick response to the pandemic and its geographic isolation kept it mostly free of the virus until the end of last year, and it was once seen as a model for preventing Covid infection.

As the nation fights a new wave of the Omicron strain that is disproportionately hurting the senior population, New Zealanders are dying from COVID-19 at historic rates. According to Health Ministry data, the virus claimed 151 lives in the seven days leading up to July 16 compared to 115 during the worst week of the last wave in March. According to a statement released by the government on Friday, 26 persons with Covid died in the past 24 hours, all of whom were above 60.

On June 24th, 2022, American women not only lost their right to a safe abortion, many say they lost the autonomy they had on their own bodies. Since then, unfortunately, many disheartening news stories have come to light, like that of a 10 years old rape victim having to travel 385 kilometres (200+ miles) for an abortion. However, many organisations have also stepped forward to help out women in whatever way they can.

One of the biggest fallouts of the overturning of Roe v. Wade was women using the internet to access information about abortion. And let’s be honest, internet is a maze of content, much of which may be false or doctored.

“Hasta la vista, baby!” That’s how Boris Johnson concluded his final major speech in parliament as UK prime minister on Wednesday (July 20), to a standing ovation from his lately mutinous MPs. However, several analysts interpreted his parting remarks referencing Arnold Schwarzenegger’s famous line from ‘Terminator’ movies as a hint that he would return. “I’ll be back,” is another line of the Terminator character which Johnson repeated. Johnson left his final session of prime minister’s questions, defended his three turbulent years in office — from Brexit and Covid vaccinations to Ukraine — and hailed the contenders vying to follow him, all the while fending off opposition charges, AFP reported.

As per Johnson’s press secretary, the prime minister isn’t considering his comeback. She further added that it was his way of saying goodbye.

Johnson’s Downing Street team is currently waging an “anyone but Rishi” campaign, accusing the former finance minister Rishi Sunak of planning the cabinet coup that led to Johnson’s ouster after a slew of scandals. Those include the ‘Partygate,’ which refers to events held by Johnson at his residence in violation of Covid guidelines when rest of UK was under lockdown imposed by his own government. The prime minister, while laughing, responded that he’s not following the Tory election that closely.

Johnson reflected on the Conservative’s resounding victory in the 2019 election on a platform to ‘get Brexit done’ and described his tenure in power as “the greatest privilege" of his life.

After leaving the parliament, Johnson advised the candidates they should “stay close to the Americans, stick up for the Ukrainians, stick up for freedom and democracy everywhere,” AFP reported.

Those include the ‘Partygate,’ which refers to events held by Johnson at his residence in violation of Covid guidelines when rest of UK was under lockdown imposed by his own government. The prime minister, while laughing, responded that he’s not following the Tory election that closely. Watch | UK Conservative Election | Poll: Rishi Sunak losing leadership race in final round Johnson reflected on the Conservative’s resounding victory in the 2019 election on a platform to ‘get Brexit done’ and described his tenure in power as “the greatest privilege" of his life. Colonialism “established a model through which the air and lands of the global south have been … used as places to dump waste the global north does not want,” says the report.

A similar argument is quite often raised by developing countries around the world on global forums. The world is now focused on Rishi Sunak, a 42-year-old man of Indian descent who is currently a leading candidate for the position of UK prime minister. His ancestry, political ascent, and fortune have piqued interest among Indians as well as British people.Rishi Sunak has gained further attention as a result of claims that Boris Johnson's downfall was caused by his departure as British Chancellor of the Exchequer.

After his Conservative Party colleagues strongly supported him with 137 votes in the final round on Wednesday, he is now the closest anybody of Indian heritage has ever come to taking office as British Prime Minister. The former Chancellor is not guaranteed a similarly smooth ride because he must compete with a considerably more difficult electorate of the Tory membership base that has recently shown favouritism for his competitor, Liz Truss, in polls.

There is still time for the MPs' favourite to attempt to duplicate that outcome at the conclusion of postal voting on September 5, though, as another head-to-head televised debate between the final two candidates is set on the BBC for Monday and a series of hustings will be held around the UK.
