Decades high inflation and soaring cost of inflation, United Kingdom has been reeling with strikes across various industries demanding higher pay following the rail strikes.

Millions in Britain are braving for a much colder winter as sky-high energy prices are set to make it unaffordable for the majority to heat their homes. To provide an alternative, Britain's libraries and museums have stepped up, dubbing themselves as 'warm havens'. Reportedly, these public buildings will form a part of a network across the country, providing warm shelters to people to avoid the frigid cool temperatures outside. The main attempt of such 'warm havens' will be to help reduce excess winter deaths. In Pics | As it happened: Heatwave 2022 — 'Monster wildfire' in France, drought in England, China's Yangtze river shrinks “We are acutely aware of the huge impact that the energy crisis will have on many living within the local community. We will be promoting our libraries as designated ‘warm spaces’ for those who can’t afford to heat their homes.” said a library owner who had already spent $33,000 on new seats and furniture, anticipating the increase in visitors. While the onus is being put on the public buildings to fill the void, their own energy bills are touching record highs. Hence the ministers across the UK are being urged to release immediate funding, directed towards the public buildings. It is pertinent to note that while UK-based energy companies such as Centrica and Shell are having bumper profitable quarters, an average UK household is expected to shell as much as $5,000, come the winters. UK natural gas prices have risen nearly 96 per cent in the year to July, while electricity prices are up 54 per cent. However, compared to other European countries, the energy bill prices in the UK have soared the most. Up until last year, Russia supplied the European Union, which the UK was part of once, with 40 per cent of its gas needs. However, that figure has dropped drastically this year as Russia continues to use its position of leverage to hurt Europe for supporting Ukraine. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Over 1,900 workers of Britain’s busiest container port will begin their eight-day strike on Sunday (August 21), their union and shipping companies have warned that the strike could have a negative impact on the supply and trade chain of the country.

The workers at Felixstowe, in east Britain, said that the reason behind their strike is their pay and are the latest workers to conduct a strike, as the unions call for higher wages for members facing a problem of the cost of living.

The Hutchison port further stated that it was aiming to minimise inconvenience during the walkouts, which will span until August 29, and that it will soon have a backup plan in place.

As double-digit inflation eats away at salaries, the rail and bus employees' strike on Friday brought London's transportation system to a complete halt. This is only the latest in a summer-long series of labour market battles.

According to Transport for London (TfL), scores of bus routes in the west of the city were interrupted, and all London underground and overground train lines were suspended in whole or in part. On Thursday and again on Saturday, hundreds of employees of the UK's national train system will walk out.

As reported by CNN, this year has already seen a number of disruptions to commuters around the nation as a result of rail strikes called by unions who want their members' wages and working conditions to more accurately reflect the skyrocketing cost of living brought on by energy price inflation.

The increase in energy costs brought on by Russia's invasion of Ukraine struck consumers directly through their home bills and indirectly through rising food prices, resulting in inflation in July reaching 10.1%, the highest level since February 1982, according to data.

This has caused a deadlock between businesses, who claim that declining demand and rising prices limit their negotiating power. Unions claim that their members cannot afford to live, and the government is concerned that significant pay rises could lead to inflation.

"We don't want to find ourselves in a situation like the 1970s, where inflation rises, salaries rise, and so on. You'll never escape this, "Grant Shapps, the secretary of transport, told the BBC.

According to the RMT, TfL's failure to provide assurances over jobs and pensions was the cause of the subterranean strike. The union charged Shapps of conducting an ideological conflict against rail workers in a letter to him.

Following the expiration of an emergency state funding agreement, TfL is currently engaged in protracted discussions with the government, which have been made necessary in part by a post-pandemic decline in passenger volume.

Workers in other British businesses are likewise preparing for future strikes or moving toward industrial action. These professionals include those who work in ports, legal firms, classrooms, hospitals, and fire departments, as well as personnel from the waste management, airport, and postal industries.

Jaswant Singh Chail, 20, who is facing treason charges in Britain, spent months plotting the attack and attempting to gain access to the royal family, the Westminster Magistrates' Court in London was told.

Before entering the grounds of the castle to the west of London, where the 96-year-old monarch primarily stays, Chail, a man from Southampton in southern England, shot a video, prosecutors said.

"I am sorry for what I have done and what I will do. I am going to attempt to assassinate Elizabeth, queen of the royal family," he said in the video, in which he was seen holding a crossbow and wearing a face covering.

"This is revenge for those who died in the 1919 massacre," Chail said, referring to an incident when British troops shot dead nearly 400 Sikhs in their holy city of Amritsar in northwestern India.

The queen, Prince Charles, and other members of her immediate family were present at the castle on the day of the intrusion.

According to the prosecution, Chail entered the property at 8:10 a.m. and was seen by a security guard in a location where the intruder would have access to the castle's private apartments.

According to the prosecution, the confiscated crossbow was a "Supersonic X-bow," whose launched bolt might result in serious or death injury.

A gas mask, rope, and electrical equipment were discovered during searches of Chail's residence, and it was discovered that he had previously applied to the Ministry of Defence and the Grenadier Guards in an effort to get in touch with the royal family.

Chail is accused of uttering death threats, having a dangerous weapon, and violating Section 2 of the Treason Act of 1842, which outlines the penalties for possessing a weapon with the aim "to hurt or frighten Her Majesty."

Thousands of train workers in Britain began a fresh round of strikes Thursday, paralysing rail service across the country in an ongoing dispute over pay and work conditions.

UK: Rail workers' union stage fresh strikes over pay and working conditions

According to official data released on Wednesday, food price increases caused British inflation to rocket to a record 40-year high in July, aggravating the nation's cost of living crisis as it faced the possibility of entering a recession. According to the Office for National Statistics, the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) increased to 10.1% last month from 9.4% in June, which was a four-decade high.

The Bank of England issued a warning earlier this month predicting that UK inflation would reach its highest level since 1980 this year, slightly above 13%. Additionally, it predicted that the nation would experience a recession near the year's conclusion that the BoE anticipates will extend until late 2023. The second quarter of the British economy decreased, according to official data released last week.

While the administration of outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson has promised to assist in lowering fuel prices for millions of Britons this next winter, consumer advocacy organisations are calling for significantly more governmental assistance. It comes as salary values are declining at a historic rate in Britain, which is experiencing a crisis related to the cost of living.

Johnson's replacement, who will take office after him next month and compete with former finance minister Rishi Sunak and foreign secretary Liz Truss, will inherit the ailing economy. Since the end of last year, the Bank of England has increased its benchmark interest rate many times in an effort to reduce inflation.

The most recent increase was by 0.5 percentage points, which is the largest increase since 1995 and brings borrowing costs to 1.75 per cent, increasing mortgage payments for homeowners while encouraging saving. The BoE's recent actions reflect the US Federal Reserve's and the European Central Bank's aggressive monetary policy as the world races to quell the raging inflation that has been stoked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

UK cost-of-living crisis deepens as inflation hits new 40-year high

The decades-high income crushing inflation has sparked strikes across numerous industries in the United Kingdom. As the latest round of strike action by tens of thousands of workers gets underway, rail, tube, and bus commuters face disruptions to services over the course of three days from Thursday.

Due to an ongoing disagreement about pay, jobs, and working conditions, a number of railway companies and bus services will be impacted by the strike. However, according to the union and bus operator Arriva North West, strikes by workers in Manchester, Lancashire, and Cheshire will be put on hold till the time GMB members vote on the proposed new pay offer. Employees of 14 train operators began their strike on Thursday.

Additionally, Sunday morning train services are expected to be impacted by the strikes of rail workers and bus services.

Mick Lynch, general secretary of RMT, stated that his union members are more committed to saving their pensions along with pay raises, job security, and favourable working conditions. Lynch stated that if the strike is not called off, Network Rail will impose forced layoffs and a 50 per cent reduction in maintenance work.

On Thursday and Saturday, there will be a significant reduction in rail service, with nearly a fifth operating, and half of the lines will be closed.

As a result of strike by thousands of workers, causing travel chaos, the RMT general issued a warning that the rail dispute might continue for an "indefinite" period. Lynch joined a picket line outside Euston station and urged the government to halt its refusal to participate in any discussion over salary, working conditions, and employment. Due to RMT and TSSA union members, only one in five trains will operate nationwide.

Mach Lynch cautioned that a wave of strikes might bring the UK to a standstill, hitting every sector of the economy.

Also read | PM hopeful Liz Truss calls UK employees 'lazy' in a controversial leaked audio. The outgoing UK Prime Minister is getting ready to leave Downing Street as he and his family are seen enjoying the sun during their second trip abroad in as many weeks. Just a week after returning from their spa vacation in Slovenia, Mr Johnson, 58, was seen flaunting his physique with wide arms while his wife Carrie and his young family relaxed in a quiet area on the Greek island of Evia.

Locals were shocked by the Johnsons' selection of a sunbathing location when they saw the prime minister reading a book in the sweltering 93°F heat while his son, Wilf, paddled in the surrounding water. Even residents who have lived here for years are unaware of the beach, and Boris' group was the only ones there, a resident informed the Sun.

Senior Tories have previously stated that the Prime Minister is "still working," despite being photographed soaking up the late-August sun in the popular tourist destination and relaxing at The Aegean in Karistos just the day before. He was also seen carrying his son Wilf's backpack when he arrived at the Athens airport over the weekend.

Following the issue over Northern Ireland, the UK has opened a dispute with the EU, accusing it of violating the terms of the Brexit accord by excluding it from scientific research initiatives. The trade and cooperation agreement had been a "clear breach," according to Liz Truss, the foreign secretary and front-runner for the Tory leadership. Her government had written to Brussels to request official dispute negotiations.

The UK government asserted that the EU was seriously harming research and development in both the UK and EU member states by barring Britain from participating in programmes like the Earth observation programme Copernicus, the nuclear research programme Euratom, the space surveillance and tracking programme, and the Horizon programme for science research.

“The EU is in clear breach of our agreement, repeatedly seeking to politicise vital scientific cooperation by refusing to finalise access to these important programmes,” she said, as reported by The Guardian. “We cannot allow this to continue. That is why the UK has launched formal consultations and will do everything necessary to protect the scientific community.”

Due to the ongoing Brexit dispute over the Northern Ireland protocol, 115 funding from the Horizon programme for British academic academics and scientists was cancelled in July.

After the then-Brexit minister, David Frost, successfully negotiated associate membership of the £80 billion Horizon Europe initiative, grants for British applicants were accepted; however, the majority of those grants are now being revoked. For the UK to take part in the scheme, a membership fee of £15 billion over seven years was required.

The beginning of negotiations through a partnership council is the first stage of a dispute procedure. If this is unsuccessful, the matter can be sent to an arbitration tribunal, which, if either party is found to have violated the agreement, might impose sanctions for non-compliance.

Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader candidate, Rishi Sunak came under fire for spending over $4,80,000 (£400,000) on a pool at his North Yorkshire property as UK residents braced for another heatwave and a rise in the cost of living.

Social media users shared images of the million dollar property that revealed a mini recreational facility under development.

The approval for the construction of a new stone building on a paddock with a gym, a 12-by-5-meter swimming pool, storage rooms, four showers, and other amenities was given to Rishi Sunak and his family in August.

According to the Independent, Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty spend their weekends at the Grade II-listed 19th-century former vicarage in his Richmond constituency in North Yorkshire. The new structure will be 81 metres away from the main home and include a ballet bar for his girls, a hot tub, and a seating space in addition to the tennis fields and swimming pools.

The story may influence Tory voters because they may believe Sunak and his family have not been impacted by the squeeze on living standards. During the election, foreign secretary and rival Liz Truss might use it against him.

Last week, the former chancellor of the exchequer pledged to assist retirees and reduce VAT on energy bills, but it is likely that he will be required to spend an estimated 10 million USD a year to heat the new pool.
