Britain's prime ministerial candidate Rishi Sunak said he wants to change the UK-India relationship to make it a more two-way exchange that opens up easy access to UK students and companies in India.

During a campaign hustings event hosted by the Conservative Friends of India (CFIN) diaspora organisation in north London on Monday evening, the former Chancellor greeted the largely British Indian gathering with a mix of traditional greetings such as "namaste, salaam, khem cho, and kidda."

He even broke into Hindi: "Aap sab mere parivar ho (you all are my family)."

"We know the UK-India relationship is important. We represent the living bridge between our two countries," he said, in response to a question about bilateral ties from CFIN co-chair Reena Ranger.

"We are all very aware of the opportunity for the UK to sell things and do things in India, but actually we need to look at that relationship differently because there is an enormous amount that we here in the UK can learn from India," he said.

"I want to make sure that it's easy for our students to also travel to India and learn, that it's also easy for our companies and Indian companies to work together because it's not just a one-way relationship, it's a two-way relationship, and that's the type of change I want to bring to that relationship," he said.

On China, the former minister reiterated his stand about the need to be "very robust" in defending the UK against its aggressiveness.

"China and the Chinese Communist Party represent the biggest threat to our economic and thereby national security that this country has faced in a long time and we need to be alive to that," he said.

"Be in no doubt, as your Prime Minister I will do whatever it takes to keep you, your families and our country safe because that's the first duty of a Conservative Prime Minister," he added.

After a grand entry at the Dhamecha Lohana Centre in Harrow to dhol beats and loud cheers, the former minister spoke briefly and then spent hours interacting with hundreds of Tory members who queued up to shake hands with him.

He was showered with blessings by the elderly in the crowd, patted on the back by others and eight-year-old Tanish Sahu got a special picture as Sunak carried him in his arms.

Amita Mishra, the Trustee of Shree Jagannatha Society UK, handed over a set of gold-plated deities all the way from India.

"We are working on creating a Jagannath Temple in London and this gift is a special blessing all the way from India," said Mishra, who was accompanied by a pandit who performed a victory shloka from the" Bhagavad Gita' as the deities were handed over to Sunak on stage.

In complete contrast, a British Sikh Tory member in the crowd waited hours to get a special bottle of Jack Daniels whisky signed by Sunak, despite both him and the former Chancellor being teetotalers.

"I don't drink but this is a special gift I received on my birthday and now with this signature it has become historic," he said.

In this gathering, his self-proclaimed underdog status as the candidate trailing in all the polls seemed irrelevant as he glided through the crowds rockstar-like and responded to comments of 'see you at No. 10 Downing Street' with an emphatic: "That's the plan, I'm giving it everything I got."

The majority in the room admitted they had already cast their online ballots in favour of Sunak and had come along to this latest hustings just to hear him out one more time.

One sceptical British Indian investment banker said he was still undecided as he did not entirely favour Sunak's handling of the Bounce Back Loan scheme introduced in the wake of the COVID-19 lockdowns, which have been "abused" by many.

But even he admitted that his vote might go to Sunak in the end as he wasn't entirely convinced by leadership rival Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.

But what a majority seemed convinced about was that Sunak's Indian origin and ethnic minority background had no part to play in the contest to succeed Boris Johnson as Conservative Party leader and the British Prime Minister.

"This country is not racist. For Rishi to reach this stage, it proves that merit is valued," said Lord Dolar Popat, a veteran Tory peer.

The entire continent of Europe is up in arms once again. Russia and its state-owned energy giant Gazprom has announced that the all-important Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline will remain shut down for three days for 'routine maintenance', starting August 31. "On August 31, 2022, the only gas compressor unit that is currently in operation, Trent 60 will be shut down for a three-day servicing and preventive maintenance period," said Gazprom in an official statement. In the immediate aftermath of the announcement, natural gas prices in Europe skyrocketed as countries looked to build reserves, fearing the temporary halt may very well extend beyond three days. Moreover, the Dutch TTF hub, a European benchmark for natural gas trading saw a hike of 19 per cent to reach $292.9 per megawatt hour. Investment bank Citi has warned that the energy bills, exacerbated by the frequent shutdowns and low supply will drive UK inflation to over 18 per cent early next year. An average UK household is expected to shell out as much as $5,000, come the winters. Despite being against Russia since its invasion of Ukraine, the European countries have remained toothless against Moscow which has used its position of dominance to circumvent the sanctions. Furthermore, as reported extensively by WION, this is not the first time that Russia has attempted to leverage its position to bring the European countries on their knees. Gazprom has stated that the pipeline will resume in line with current volumes of 33 million cubic meters a day, which is only about 20 per cent of the total capacity of the pipeline. British Airways on Monday announced that it will cut back on the number of flights scheduled at London’s busiest airport, Heathrow, over the winter as the aviation industry continues to experience staffing challenges in the face of a surge in demand for travel worldwide.

Heathrow, adding to its statement given in March, saying a cut of 10,000 flights, added that it will extend its passenger cap in October. The airline announced, "We're now adjusting our winter short-haul schedule until the end of March, reducing our schedule by around 5,000 round-trips," AFP reported.

The airline also announced changes to its short-haul schedule for the next two months.

The largest airport in Europe introduced its daily departure of 100,000 passengers in July, which is about 4,000 passengers per day, a little less than the planned flights. The cap was introduced to lessen the recent commotion brought on by a post-pandemic surge of passengers and staffing issues.

Airlines this summer scheduled tens of thousands of flights throughout Europe to benefit from the loosening of Covid restrictions. However, after making dramatic personnel reductions after the removal of restrictions, the aviation industry faced a heavy staffing issue.

In numerous airports throughout Europe, the staffing resulted in lengthy lines to check in, security check, and retrieve bags. Many flights were cancelled due to staff shortages.

Between May and October, British Airways temporarily halted ticket sales for its flights out of Heathrow and reduced travel capacity by 13 per cent.

British Airways intends to run 290 roundtrips every day this winter.

British Airways on Monday announced that it will cut back on the number of flights scheduled at London’s busiest airport, Heathrow, over the winter as the aviation industry continues to experience staffing challenges in the face of a surge in demand for travel worldwide. The airline announced, "We're now adjusting our winter short-haul schedule until the end of March, reducing our schedule by around 5,000 round-trips," AFP reported. The airline also announced changes to its short-haul schedule for the next two months.
