According to the Mail Plus, which broke the story first, the culture secretary was given the option of continuing in her position. According to a friend reported in the publication, "[Dorries] has decided that this is the best time to quit the cabinet."

She is anticipated to receive a peerage in Boris Johnson's resignation honours list, which will lead to a byelection in her Mid-Bedfordshire district.

Her resignation from the government is anticipated to allow the successful author, whose works have sold more than 2.5 million copies, to resume her literary career.

In one contentious tweet, Dorries compared Rishi Sunak's stabbing of Julius Caesar to Brutus because of the manner the latter had turned on Johnson during the leadership contest.

Nadine Dorries joins Priti Patel in quitting cabinet following the election of Truss as new PM

The EU has called on the new British prime minister, Liz Truss, to have a broader view of Britain's relationship with Europe while urging her to respect the Brexit agreement.

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, tweeted her congratulations and mentioned shared challenges like climate change and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. von der Leyen is anticipated to call Truss in the coming days.

She said: “I look forward to a constructive relationship, in full respect of our agreements.”

Maroš Šefčovič, the EU’s top official in charge of relations with the UK, said a positive relationship between the two was of great strategic importance. “I stand ready to work intensively and constructively with my new UK interlocutor to foster such a partnership, in full respect of our agreements,” The Guardian reported.

A few weeks after Truss told Tory members at a hustings event in August that she was unsure whether he was "friend or foe," the French president, Emmanuel Macron, praised Truss and said that "the British nation is our ally."

“Congratulations to Liz Truss on her election,” Macron tweeted. “The British people are our friends, the British nation is our ally. Behind the scenes, EU officials are not optimistic that their relationship will improve with Truss, the author of a measure that would nullify important provisions of the Northern Ireland protocol and possibly ignite a trade conflict.

The hope on this side is for things to get better and for there to be a more positive relationship, but no one is holding their breath, according to an EU ambassador.

They added: “Looking at where Liz Truss got her support I don’t really expect her to have that much room for manoeuvre. But I would gladly be proved wrong.”

EU urges Liz Truss to adhere to the Brexit deal

Liz Truss is set to take over as Britain's next Prime Minister today and the first task for the newly elected PM is to form her cabinet. As Truss is running against time to set out plans to deal with the cost of living crisis in the country, Truss' cabinet will consist of loyalist MPs.

United Kingdom: Liz Truss wins Tory leadership election, no cabinet role for Rishi Sunak?

Liz Truss beat Rishi Sunak in the Tory leadership race to become Britain's next Prime Minister. What are the challenges awaiting Truss? What lies ahead for Rishi Sunak? Palki Sharma tells you.

Gravitas: Liz Truss beats Rishi Sunak to become UK PM

Britain's new Conservative leader Liz Truss Monday vowed "bold" action to fix the country's worst economic crisis in decades, as she was confirmed as Prime Minister Boris Johnson's successor after a gruelling party contest. Molly Gambhir tells you more.

WION Fineprint | Truss named UK leader as embattled Tories urged to unite

Liz Truss will become the prime minister of the United Kingdom. While it would be tempting to draw implied parallels with the indomitable Margaret Thatcher, but the country that Ms Truss will lead is a vastly different one. The late Thatcher, for one, the daughter of a grocer, demonstrated in word and deed, that the UK was a land of opportunity- a theme that has, over time diminished for many in the country. Second, the context- that of political economy- is different. Thatcher’s incubus was the economic philosophy of ‘neo-liberalism’ wherein the late leader, among other things, aimed (successfully) to trim the state. But Thatcher’s era was also one where the UK was undergoing profound structural change(s) that did not seem apparent then.

One of these was immigration and immigrant flows into the country, the nature and form of which have changed the complexion of the country. One ‘after effect’ of this development is actually that a brown skinned Indian origin person (Rishi Sunak) could not only think of becoming PM of the UK but also pose a challenge to what was once a ‘white establishment’ governed country. But this fact obscures both a latent and overt trend - one that formed the foundational premise of Brexit- that of a country that is deeply polarized and somewhat at odds with itself. (This includes the yawning gap between Scottish nationalism and the Unionists plus the diminishing returns of the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland)

This is the broad context and set of conditions that Ms Truss will inherit. Overlaid by inflation of the nature of decadal highs that has made cost of living exorbitant for ‘ordinary’ Britons, the challenges could not be more fraught and complex for the new prime minister.

Can, the question is, Ms. Truss govern?

Of course, she can. Governing, in the pedestrian sense, is easy. But the UK needs more than governance. Shorn of accretions and rhetoric, Ms Truss needs to, or has to reclaim the country for Britons, in the broadest possible sense. (The term Britons is employed here to include all that form the country’s firmament). How can this be rendered possible? Ms Truss, for starters has to tread a delicate line: she has to foster a sense of belongingness in the country while at the same time disavowing narrow, exclusive nationalism. This is not easy but is doable -something that can be done by broadening the idea and concept of belongingness, fostering non exclusionary pride in the nation. But it would mean broadening the party tent, a possibility that would call for bold and beautiful leadership.

While it is an iffy proposition given the nature of the Conservative Party, other challenges would call for equally bold leadership. One of these is the UK’s standing in the world. It would appear that post-colonial Britain is an addled country. Its ‘island mentality’ has not gone away. Notwithstanding its past(right or wrong), the country is actually inward looking. In prosaic terms, it is neither here nor there. Its foreign and defense policy is latched to that of the United States under the rubric of the ‘special relationship’. The author does not suggest that the UK disavow the special relationship but it may be prudent for the country to have some ‘strategic autonomy’ under the broad umbrella of the relationship. Next, even though it is a ‘bridge too far’ but the UK must repair and calibrate its relationship with the European Union. The why of it is obvious but not so the how of it. This is another area where Ms Truss must demonstrate leadership.

At this point in time, the UK does not have soft power. (Obiter Dictum, Tony Blair’s ‘Cool Britannica’ branding was not only a vulgar and lame rendition of soft power but as shallow as Blair himself). The country needs to think deep and introspect about itself and its position within and without. The world has moved on and so must the UK. In terms of hard power, the UK is not a laggard but surely, its defense and security posture need a rethink and maybe even an overhaul. Here Ms Truss has experience but typically bureaucracies -be these the civil services or the defense establishments all over the world- are defined by inertia. Innovation even of the staid variety is resisted. Again, deft leadership is called for here.

All in all, the distilled essence of this essay is that the UK adrift as it is stands at a cross roads. The country needs able, bold and beautiful leadership; not mere governance or mere economic antidotes. Its challenges are too profound and fraught to be reduced to these. Ms Truss has not ably only won the race for prime minister-ship in the UK but demonstrated verve and staying power. This is just the beginning. A country awaiting reclamation becomes. Ms Truss for the sake of her country must rise to the occasion and redeem the United Kingdom.

After months of campaigning and hustings, the UK has a new Prime Minister and it is not former chancellor Rishi Sunak. The Tory leader was a clear favourite at the beginning of the election trail. However, somewhere along the way, Sunak lost the plot and surrendered the initiative to Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, who never let go of the momentum. What were the reasons that Sunak and his popularity amongst the conservatives dived so steeply? WION takes a look and explores. Tax laundering One of the biggest thorns in Sunak's election campaign has been unfortunately his wife Akshata Murthy, the daughter of Indian billionaire and Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy. According to a report by The Guardian, Rishi was forced to explain details about how he managed his family's fortune, which is said to total $840 million and has led to him being routinely referred to as the UK’s richest MP. The majority of Sunak's fortune were derived from his marriage to Akshata who owns a 0.93 per cent stake worth $794 million in Infosys. Live updates | Liz Truss becomes new UK PM after beating Rishi Sunak Reports of Akshata touted to be wealthier than British Queen Elizabeth II with assets worth $495 million, according to Sunday Times were not received well by the masses. Moreover, Akshata was able to save millions of pounds in tax on dividends, which were collected from her family's IT business. Last year, she earned a dividend payment worth 11.6 million pounds ($15.1 million) as she owns about 0.9 per cent of Indian IT giant Infosys. After the issue snowballed into a major controversy, Akshata agreed to pay more tax on foreign income. However, the damage had been done by then. However, his counterpart, Truss believes that tax cuts will lead to extra spending and tax revenues and rescue the economy. While Truss' populist measure of immediate tax cuts has not received the approval of the economists, it sure has increased her popularity amongst the conservative vote base. It was at this stage that Truss started to pull away from Sunak in the race. Sensing that the margin was widening, Sunak and his team took a volte-face and announced that if elected to power, he will reduce the basic rates of income tax by 20 per cent by 2029. Read more: Trailing in UK PM race, Rishi Sunak promises 'radical' 20% income tax cuts Sunak stated that his immediate target was tackling inflation. However, once that is achieved, his government will slash one pence off income tax in 2024, as announced in his tenure as the chancellor. Afterward, another three pence will be struck off the income tax, come 2029. Additionally, Sunak pledged to scrap VAT on energy bills having vociferously opposed it for months. The green card controversy While the Akshata Murthy tax laundering controversy had barely died down, Sunak was quickly left red-faced as reports emerged suggesting that Sunaks had retained their US green cards, even after returning to Britain. Top members of the Conservative Party dashed his hopes of becoming the PM by questioning his commitment to the UK. “He (Sunak) has shown colossal naivety and the way he has arranged his affairs does not suggest he is even committed to the UK, but that he is keeping open the option of a career in finance in the United States,” a senior Tory leader told The Observer. It was only after much public and media pressure that Sunak confirmed he gave up the "green card" for the United States after he became Britain's finance minister. Sunak's lavish lifestyle As reported by WION, in July, Sunak visited a building site in Teesside, Northern England where he was spotted wearing $595 Prada suede loafers. The Conservative party leader was visiting Teesside to gather the support of Mayor Ben Houchen. However, more than the visit, it was Sunak's "pricey" loafers that grabbed the eyeballs. In 2020, as the Chancellor of the country, he was spotted using a $220 mug in the traditional pre-Budget photograph. Sunak didn't learn his lessons and came under fire last month as well for spending over $4,80,000 (£400,000) on a pool at his North Yorkshire property as UK residents braced for another heatwave and a rise in the cost of living. "I have friends who are aristocrats, I have friends who are upper-class, I have friends who are, you know, working-class. Well, not working class," Sunak said in the BBC documentary titled 'Middle Classes- Their Rise & Sprawl'. And then I shock them at the end of chatting to them for half an hour and tell them I was at Winchester and one of my best friends is from Eton or whatever. And then they're like, 'Oh OK'." The video had brought a lot of flak for Sunak who was dubbed being as out of touch from reality. Since then, Sunak and his PR team had attempted to change the narrative by selling him as the 'underdog'. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

However, the increase in population and scarcity of resources mean that tremendous strain is being put on water supplies, required in large quantities for beef farming. Thus, the project, at least on paper attempts to reduce the reliance on such natural resources by stating that insect-eating requires less land and water than conventional livestock. African palm weevil, the litter beetle, termites and crickets are some of the edible insect species consumed here. On September 4, a renowned free climber was spotted climbing The Shard, one of the tallest buildings in the United Kingdom, in front of stunned onlookers.

Adam Lockwood, 21, is known for climbing many of the world's tallest structures, and this time he climbed The Shard without any safety precautions. He then took a selfie at the top of the skyscraper at around 5 in the morning. Lockwood then uploaded a picture on his Facebook page later. He donned a headcam while standing 1,000 feet above London, bare-shirted and barefoot.

For any of his climbs, Lockwood doesn’t use shackles. His grasp and upper body strength are absolutely essential for his survival in these adventures, Times Now reported.

Witnesses uploaded videos and pictures on social media before they left the place.

After 45 minutes, the police and other emergency services were alerted to the location after hearing reports of the climber on The Shard.

Following the incident, Lockwood was arrested along with two other individuals. On suspicion of trespassing and creating a public disturbance, the two other people were arrested. The matter is still being looked at.

Rail passengers were required to change trains at the nearby London Bridge station as a result of the unpleasant incident that led to the cordoning off of the area around the base of The Shard.

Lockwood has previously garnered media attention by climbing a number of tall structures. He once pretended to be suspended from Milan’s San Siro Stadium’s rafters. He also tried several pull-ups from a high beam.

Seventy years after he was hanged in a British prison, the family of a man who was wrongfully convicted of murder has received a police apology for the "awful anguish" the miscarriage of justice caused.

In September 1952, at the age of 28, Mahmood Mattan—a British Somali father of three—was hung after being found guilty of killing Lily Volpert in her Cardiff clothing business. To the very end, he insisted on his innocence.

However, his conviction was the first one from the Criminal Case Review Commission to be overturned in the court of appeals in 1998 as a result of his family's tenacious advocacy.

Jeremy Vaughan, chief constable of South Wales police, said: “This is a case very much of its time – racism, bias and prejudice would have been prevalent throughout society, including the criminal justice system.

“There is no doubt that Mahmood Mattan was the victim of a miscarriage of justice as a result of a flawed prosecution, of which policing was clearly a part.”

Detectives from Cardiff City Police, which is now a division of South Wales Police, looked into the March 1952 slaying of Volpert, age 41, whose throat had been sliced at the store near the docks, as per the Guardian.

The investigation "pre-dates the formation of South Wales police," according to Vaughan, but he continued, "It is right and proper that an apology be made on behalf of policing for what went so badly wrong in this case 70 years ago and for the terrible suffering of Mr Mattan's family and all those affected by this tragedy for many years."

“Even to this day, we are still working hard to ensure that racism and prejudice are eradicated from society and policing.”

Laura, Mattan's wife, and their three kids David, Omar, and Mervyn, also known as Eddie, fought for his exoneration for 46 years, but they have all since passed away.

The apology was "far too late for the persons directly affected as they are no longer with us and still, we are yet to hear the words I am/we am sorry," Tanya Mattan, a granddaughter of Mattan, told the BBC.

Within hours of Volpert's murder, Mattan, a former seaman who was originally from Hargeisa in what was then known as British Somaliland, was detained.

An all-white jury found him guilty after a three-day trial in Swansea on the charges.

This was true even though Mattan had a witness-supported alibi and there was no forensic proof.

Mattan had a limited command of English, and during the trial, his own defence attorney referred to him as a "semi-civilized primitive."

The Mattan family received compensation from the Home Office in 2001, but the police had not yet issued an apology.

UK police apologise for wrongfully convicting a man executed 70 years ago

The Conservative Party leadership election has concluded, and Liz Truss is largely anticipated to be declared the winner and follow Boris Johnson as the country's next prime minister.

The Conservative Party's online and postal voting for members ended at 5 p.m. (16:00 GMT) on Friday, capping a two-month campaign that saw the final two candidates participate in hustings and televised debates while touring the nation.

A day before the departing Johnson formally presents his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II, the outcome of the runoff between foreign secretary Truss and former finance minister Rishi Sunak will be made public at 12:30 p.m. on Monday.

Andrew Stephenson, head of the Conservative Party, congratulated both candidates for participating in the frequently "gruelling schedule in good spirits".

“I know our party is ready to unite around a new leader, and tackle the challenges we face as a country ahead,” he said as the ballot closed.

Early in August—a month after Johnson announced his resignation—the estimated 200,000 Conservative Party members began casting ballots. This was in response to a number of controversies and resignations from Johnson's cabinet.

In member polls, Truss, 47, has regularly received a resounding majority of the vote versus Sunak.

She has run a campaign to cut taxes and put economic growth first, at a time when the UK is experiencing inflation that it has not been seen in decades and is predicted to go into recession this year, as reported by Al Jazeera.

“I have a bold plan that will grow our economy and deliver higher wages, more security for families and world-class public services,” Truss said in a statement, as the curtain came down on the often bitter race with her 42-year-old rival Sunak.

“If I am elected prime minister, I will never let anyone talk us down and I will do everything in my power to make sure our great nation succeeds.”

Sunak has called Truss's plans "reckless," warning that they run the risk of driving up inflation and harming the nation's reputation in the eyes of foreign lenders and markets.

He has suggested that he is best qualified to lead the UK through its present economic difficulties because of his experience managing the nation's finances during the pandemic.

“We face huge challenges ahead, but also huge opportunities,” Sunak said on Friday.

“I know what it takes to get through challenging times. I did it as chancellor and I will do it again as prime minister.”

Who is the better politician?

After months of managing controversies poorly, Conservatives turned against their Brexit hero Johnson and chose Sunak over Truss as their more electable candidate to lead them until the next general election, which is scheduled for January 2025.

Nevertheless, the party's grassroots have backed Truss's right-wing agenda despite the fact that she was a former Liberal Democrat and supported remaining in the EU during the 2016 referendum in Britain.

“She’s a better politician,” John Curtice, professor of politics at the University of Strathclyde, told the AFP news agency after Truss stuck to a simple script over the long, hot summer of campaigning.

“Sunak has demonstrated some of the qualities you might hope to see in a good minister. But Miss Truss has demonstrated the qualities that you need in a politician,” Curtice added.

Regardless of the outcome, recent polls of the general electorate indicate that the Conservatives will find it more difficult to maintain their 12-year hold on office.
