After waking up with a hangover and a $39,317 Uber bill on his debit card, a British ride-share consumer was shocked.

After working a shift at the Buxton Inn in Manchester, England, Oliver Kaplan, 22, booked a cab via the Uber app. He had arranged to meet friends at the nearby pub, Witchwood, which is only four miles away.

“I ordered an Uber like I do most nights on the way home from work and everything seemed normal,” Kaplan told South West News Service about his horrifying bill.

He claims the price quoted on the app was between $11 and $12, which he happily accepted.

“The driver arrived, I got in the Uber and he took me exactly where I was meant to be going,” Kaplan said. “It was a 15-minute journey — tops.”

Kaplan thought no more of the experience until he received a message from Uber the following morning.

“When I woke up hungover the next morning, the last thing I expected was a charge of over £35,000 [$39,317]!” he exclaimed.

The total amount billed to Kaplan’s card was a whopping £35,427 — or $39,317. Customer service said the amount couldn’t be taken "because I had insufficient funds,” Kaplan claimed, saying Uber employees were initially stumped by the sum.

Uber goof-up: UK man charged $39,000 for 15-minute cab ride after drunken night

The Conservative Party's leaders approval rating have now fallen for the newly-elected UK PM Liz Truss to minus 47. Truss now has the worst approval ratings for a Prime Minister in an opinion poll.

UK PM Liz Truss' rating stands at minus 47, only 16% voters approve of her job

It has been barely a few weeks since the Liz Truss government took charge in the UK but looks like the wheels are already coming off. Currently, in a major economic crisis, the UK will need to cut as many as 200,000 government jobs in the next two years to avoid saddling the exchequer with billions in debt, per a report by Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS). The think tank said that the government will have to find a way to pay nearly $5.6 billion of savings to the workforce this year, accounting for the public sector wages that are set to increase by five per cent. It added that over 100,00 job cuts will ensure that the wage bill remains unchanged, at least for this year. However, it added the caveat that if inflation continues to increase at the current pace, the UK government might have to go on another spree and slash the workforce by another 100,000. Notably, during the pandemic, the public sector workforce of the UK grew by a quarter of a million to 5.5 million. Thus, the government is already looking to tone down the bureaucracy and cut nearly a fifth of the headcount which could essentially save $3.8 billion. In response to UK home secretary Suella Braverman's assertion that the Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP) had not "worked very well," India pointed out that it had taken the initiative in all cases brought to it under the pact.

The Indian High Commission in the UK stated that India is waiting for "demonstrable progress" on some of the commitments made by the UK government under the MMP, which was signed last year, in response to a PTI inquiry about Braverman's interview in The Spectator that labelled Indians as the "largest group of people who overstay" their visas in the UK.

"As part of our wider discussions under Migration and Mobility, the Government of India is committed to working with the UK government to facilitate the return of Indian citizens who have overstayed their visa period here in the UK," the High Commission of India statement said on Thursday.

"As per the data shared with the home office, as of date, action has been initiated on all of the cases referred to the High Commission. Further, the UK has also undertaken to fulfil certain commitments as part of the Migration and Mobility Protocol, on which we await demonstrable progress," it said.

'Action taken in all cases': India responds to UK home secretary's claim on visa overstayers

As the energy crisis in Europe is escalating, the National Grid on Thursday (October 6) warned Britons that they might have to face power cuts of up to three hours this winter.

The company added that if energy prices escalate, there's a high chance of supply interruptions. Additionally, the company stated that as a base case, it expects to face no problems, but if power cuts happen, which will majorly happen at a time of high demand, customers will be informed at least a day prior.

However, these power cuts will rotate so that no specific areas in the country are affected.

The company claimed that Russia's invasion had created turmoil in the energy market. All gas supplies from Russia have been hit, leaving all countries to struggle for alternative supply options.

When asked Prime Minister Liz Truss, who during her campaign promised that there would be no blackouts, responded by saying that the UK is in a better position than any other country and has a good amount of energy supply. Truss further added that it can be better and that's what she is here for.

According to National Grid, while the UK is not overly reliant on Russian gas supplies, it, like any other mainland European country, could face shortfalls.

The UK is majorly dependent on gas supplies to produce electricity, with gas stations generating over 40 per cent of the country's electricity.

As per the grid's reports, there could be three situations. First, there'll be enough supply like precious winter; second, the energy crisis in Europe might make it difficult for the UK to import electricity; and third, the national grid might lead to shortages.

The United Kingdom Home Secretary, Suella Braverman expressed concerns over the free trade agreement (FTA) between India and Britain which she believes would go against Brexit objectives and encourage immigration to the country.

These remarks were made during an interview, on Thursday, with The Spectator magazine, where she also dubbed Indians as the “largest group of people who overstay” their visas in the UK. According to reports, she said that she will not back the trade deal which gives New Delhi greater visa concessions.

This comes amid the UK Prime Minister Liz Truss urging the British lawmaker and negotiators to adhere to the Diwali deadline for finalising the FTA. “I have concerns about having an open borders migration policy with India because I don't think that's what people voted for with Brexit,” said Braverman.

When asked about students and entrepreneurs she said there may be some flexibility, “But I do have some reservations. Look at migration in this country – the largest group of people who overstay are Indian migrants,” she told the British weekly magazine.

Braverman also referred to the Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP) which was signed between her predecessor Priti Patel former Home Secretary and the External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar in May last year and said, “We even reached an agreement with the Indian government last year to encourage and facilitate better cooperation in this regard. It has not necessarily worked very well.”

The MMP was a “landmark agreement” signed between the UK and the government of India which “will provide new opportunities to thousands of young people in the UK and India seeking to live, work and experience each other's cultures,” said the former Home Secretary at the time. She also indicated that it will become easier for the British government to remove those “with no right to be in the UK” and “crack down on those abusing our system.”

Braverman also reiterated how she had campaigned to leave the European Union (EU) partly because she wanted migration to reduce. She added, “That was in our 2019 manifesto. If you look at net migration figures, they have not fallen…we’re pretty much at the same level as pre-Brexit.”

In 2020, at least 20,706 Indians overstayed their visas, according to data from the UK home office which is a higher number of people, than any other country. Reportedly the Diwali deadline was set by former PM Boris Johnson and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when Truss was secretary of state for international trade.

ALSO READ: Suella Braverman blames 'uncontrolled migration' and 'failure to integrate' for Leicester violence Braverman also referred to the Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP) which was signed between her predecessor Priti Patel former Home Secretary and the External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar in May last year and said, “We even reached an agreement with the Indian government last year to encourage and facilitate better cooperation in this regard. It has not necessarily worked very well.” The MMP was a “landmark agreement” signed between the UK and the government of India which “will provide new opportunities to thousands of young people in the UK and India seeking to live, work and experience each other's cultures,” said the former Home Secretary at the time. She also indicated that it will become easier for the British government to remove those “with no right to be in the UK” and “crack down on those abusing our system.” Braverman also reiterated how she had campaigned to leave the European Union (EU) partly because she wanted migration to reduce. She added, “That was in our 2019 manifesto. If you look at net migration figures, they have not fallen…we’re pretty much at the same level as pre-Brexit.” ALSO WATCH: UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman objects to increasing visas for Indians In 2020, at least 20,706 Indians overstayed their visas, according to data from the UK home office which is a higher number of people, than any other country. Reportedly the Diwali deadline was set by former PM Boris Johnson and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when Truss was secretary of state for international trade. However, India’s Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, indicated back in September, that the Truss administration also wants to stick to the Diwali deadline. The two countries finished the 5th round of negotiations back in August. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

For the first time in its 106-year existence, the Royal College of Nursing is holding a vote among all of its members in the UK for going on strike.

The union wants its 300,000 members to strike over salary, and the vote's results are expected next month.

If strikes occur, non-urgent but not emergency services will be impacted, according to the RCN.

Nurses are being asked by the government to "carefully consider" the effect on patients.

No UK country has provided anything even remotely close to the five per cent increase the RCN has been requesting over the 12 per cent RPI inflation rate.

In Scotland, five per cent has been awarded, whereas NHS employees in England and Wales, including nurses, are receiving an average of 4.75 per cent more. A salary award for nurses has not yet been given in Northern Ireland.

In comparison to the 4.6 per cent average for the entire economy, the average wage fell by 6 per cent between 2011 and 2021, according to a study the RCN said it had commissioned.

UK PM Liz Truss addresses party after turmoil and tax U-turn

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss on Wednesday pledged to steer Britain through "stormy days", in a speech that was interrupted by Greenpeace protesters. This was Truss' first address at Conservative Party conference after she became PM.

"We gather at a vital time for the United Kingdom. These are stormy days," she said, referring to the COVID-19 pandemic, war in Ukraine and the death of Britain's longest reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth.

"In these tough times, we need to step up. I'm determined to get Britain moving, to get us through the tempest and to put us on a stronger footing."

Truss' first month in office has been chaotic, especially after her announcement of a new economic policy that created panic among investors. A U-turn on such a major policy in very first month in power sent Truss' approval ratings below those of Boris Johnson, the former UK PM who Truss succeeded. The Conservative conference was supposed to be Truss' crowning glory but situation turned it into a personal nightmare.

Four women from the United Kingdom-- Mairi Hilton, Lucy Bruzzone, Clare Ballantyne and Natalie Corbett-- have been picked to run the world’s remotest and coldest post office on the Goudier Island in Port Lockroy, Antarctica. This was in response to a job alert sent out by a British charity earlier this year.

The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust started looking for a team to handle their Port Lockroy base and spend five months in Antarctica. Reportedly, the chosen team would be responsible for counting penguins.

This would be the first time the site would be opened to the public since the Covid-19 pandemic, but sees at least 18,000 people a year, during Antarctic summer between November and March. The charity also indicated that they received about 100 applications each year.

This year, they reportedly received 6,000 applications out of which a team of four women were selected. This includes a newlywed who is looking forward to her “solo honeymoon” as she will be leaving her husband behind for this adventure.

The team will count penguins in almost continuous daylight, live in subzero temperatures, and sleep in bunk beds, without electricity or running water, but they are really looking forward to it, reported the Guardian.

Mairi Hilton from Scotland, spent four years pursuing her PhD in conservation biology in Australia and will reportedly be in charge of monitoring the island’s colony of 1,500 gentoo penguins. “This will be my first time in Antarctica and I’m very excited to set eyes on the white continent,” the 30-year-old said in an interview.

London resident Lucy Bruzzone said that this job has been her “lifelong dream”. The 40-year-old has some experience with the cold as she was the chief scientist on an Arctic expedition in Svalbard for three months. This time she has been hired as the base’s leader.

“I’m most looking forward to stepping onto Goudier Island and taking in the cacophony and pungent smell of the penguins, the backdrop of the glaciers and Fief mountains, and being able to call it home for the next few months,” said the 23-year-old, Clare Ballantyne. She has been handed the responsibility of managing the 80,000 cards mailed from the site to more than 100 countries each year. Ballantyne recently graduated from Oxford University with a master’s degree in earth science.

Natalie Corbett is a 31-year-old newlywed from Hampshire. She runs a pet accessories business and will be in charge of handling the gift shop on the island, said the Guardian. Additionally, Vicky Inglis from Aberdeenshire will also join the team for 10 weeks as a general assistant. She has also stayed at the oldest permanent British base on the Antarctic peninsula previously.

4 women beat 6,000 applicants for job to run world’s most remote post office in Antarctica

According to a study, more than a third of young people feel their lives are out of control due to the Covid pandemic, reported the Guardian. Additionally, the findings also indicated that more than 60% of young people between the ages of 16-25 years said that they are sacred for their generation’s future.

A report by the Prince’s Trust Class of Covid research released its findings to the local media ahead of a nationwide campaign set to be launched in the United Kingdom this week to highlight the pandemic’s long-term impact on the younger generation. The findings were based on the data collected from more than 2,000 young people across the UK.

“Young people today are facing unique challenges which threaten the futures and aspirations of an entire generation if we don’t act,” said the charity’s UK chief executive, Jonathan Townsend to the Guardian. According to him, for young people “their education, employment and key formative years have already suffered, leaving many feeling uncertain and scared about a future which appears to be spiralling out of their control.”

He added these fears are despite high vacancies as “young people remain worried about their future career prospects”. The study also shows that at least half of those surveyed indicated that living through the pandemic has made them more resilient. Meanwhile, more than half of them said they are more determined to pursue their goals than before, said the report.

According to Townsend, “young people have shown a unique resilience to overcome the challenges they faced and are more determined than ever to achieve their goals.” However, they need support to ensure their talent and aspirations do not go to waste, he added.

Another study that surveyed 16-19-year-olds also showed evidence of widespread “retarded development” among young people, due to missing major developmental milestones during the pandemic. The Savanta State of the Youth Nation report also showed how the pandemic has given rise to a new era of uncertainty and lack of confidence.

This particular study is by the UK’s largest youth research panel which has asked the same set of questions to 1,000 young people for the past 7 years. Therefore, they have drawn comparisons to understand the far-reaching consequences and the impact of the loss of confidence during the 2 years. They included milestones like first kiss, first romantic relationship, new jobs and workplace, and so on.

At least 60% of young people who were living alone during the pandemic said that they lack confidence in their decision-making. This is in comparison to the 40% before the pandemic. Similarly, those who lived with their parents experienced a slight dip in their confidence with 47% saying they could make up their minds when compared to the 52% prior to the pandemic.

The effect was also seen in young people who experienced disruptions in starting work or who had to work from home and reportedly said that they were confused about what to expect from their jobs. The study indicated before the pandemic at least 68% of young people felt work was what they expected, but this figure fell down to 49% after the pandemic.

The study indicated before the pandemic at least 68% of young people felt work was what they expected, but this figure fell down to 49% after the pandemic. WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Newly appointed Home Secretary Suella Braverman is expected to use the upcoming Conservative Party annual conference to bring in a legislation to ban the migrants crossing the English Channel from seeking asylum.

Reportedly, the new legislation is designed to create a blanket ban on anyone entering the UK illegally through boats across the channel.

"It’s right that we extend the hand of friendship to those in genuine need," said Braverman.

"Parts of the system aren't delivering. We need to end abuse of the rules and cut down on those numbers that aren’t meeting the needs of our economy," she added.

According to experts, Braverman's proposal is touch different from her predecessor Priti Patel's plan as the former is looking to impose a complete blanket ban on the migrants.

As reported by WION, the former interior minister in April this year had brought the 'Rwanda Asylum Policy' under which aliens arriving in the UK through 'illegal' means would be sent to the African country of Rwanda to seek asylum.

However, before Patel & co. could send the first deportation flight, it was grounded due to legal challenges. The incident happened in June and since then, not a single deportation has taken place as the case continues to linger in the UK courts.

The migrant crossover across the English Channel has been swelling up, breaking new records with alarming frequency.

Up until August over 22,557 migrants had crossed the channel. Comparatively, only 28,526 migrants crossed the Channel last year, while the number stood below 9,000 in 2020.

UK to ban migrants crossing the English Channel from seeking asylum

According to a report by BBC Panorama, the company that runs Britain’s biggest power station and burns millions of tonnes of imported wood pellets has been using some wood from Canada’s primary forests. This is after Drax takes billions of pounds of taxpayer money in green energy subsidies.

This use of wood pellets is classed as renewable energy and while burning wood is considered green, environmentalists argue otherwise. The company had earlier claimed that they only use sawdust and waste wood. However, the investigation unearthed evidence that Drax has been felling environmentally-important forests in Canada’s British Columbia. The team from BBC analysed satellite images, traced logging licences and used drone images to support its claims.

The Drax power station, in Yorkshire, was previously a coal-powered plant and is now responsible for producing 12% of all of the UK’s renewable electricity. They have reportedly received at least 6 billion pounds in green energy subsidies from the country’s taxpayers. Drax has also bought logging licences for two environmentally-important forests in Canada the BBC alleged.

Meanwhile, the provincial authorities in Canada have reportedly highlighted the importance of old-growth forests and asked the companies to avoid logging in the area. Drax’s own responsible sourcing policy echoes a similar note saying that they will avoid “damage or disturbance” of primary and old-growth forests, said the report.

The company has reportedly told Panorama that most of the trees in the region were dead and they were logged to reduce the risk of wildfires. However, the satellite images that analysed during the investigation shows otherwise, said the report. On other hand, Drax also told the BBC they have transferred the logging licences to other companies and did not cut the forest down themselves. However, the authorities in British Columbia told reporters that the logging licences still belong to Drax.

The company later admitted that they did use logs from the forest to make wood pellets, but only species of timber not required by the industry. Furthermore, Drax reportedly asserted that the forests that Panorama has referred to are not primary forests given that they are near the roads, but BBC argues that the United Nations’ definition of primary forests does not include a provision for their proximity to roads. One of the sites was six miles away from the nearest paved road, the report said.

According to a spokesperson from Drax at least 80% of their wood is in the form of Canadian pellets and is sawmill residue which would be eventually disposed of. They further asserted they have a stringent policy regarding sustainability standards of both their own pellet production as well as their suppliers which is verified by third-party certification schemes. These revelations come ahead of the UK government's new biomass strategy which is set to be published later this year and will determine policies surrounding natural fuels including wood.
