Jatin Mehta, a diamond and jewellery tycoon, is reportedly taking his fight to a London court in the UK to undo a worldwide freeze on his assets after bank fraud allegations. According to sources, Mehta has been accused of swindling at least 15 money lenders in India out of more than $1 billion which led to a freezing order earlier this year in May.

In a court filing last week Mehta’s lawyers alleged that the Indian unit of Standard Chartered and liquidation firm Grant Thornton have indulged in a “sleight of hand” to get the order from courts earlier this year and it is completely unjustified. The lead lawyer, Andrew Hunter, argued that Mehta is “as much the victim of what occurred as the consortium of banks,” said a report by Bloomberg.

In 2013, the diamond tycoon was accused of falsely defaulting more than $1 billion in loans to two companies, Winsome Diamonds and Jewellery Ltd. and Forever Precious Diamonds & Jewellery Ltd. also owned by him which left 15 banks unpaid, said the report citing the court filings by lawyers for Grant Thornton.

Furthermore, Mehta allegedly also laundered the cash through several firms across the world which was then used to fund the expansion of his laboratory-grown diamond business. According to court filings, Grant Thornton is also acting as a liquidator for the companies which Mehta allegedly used to launder the money and will return any amount recovered to the Indian lenders.

On the other hand, Mehta has denied all allegations against him and said that his success in pioneering the business of lab-grown diamonds had threatened the already established diamond industry. The lab-grown diamonds in this case refer to a larger diamond developed from pieces of other diamonds after being exposed to extreme heat and pressure.

Furthermore, his lawyers have argued that the industry backed by Standard Chartered and the bank and Grant Thornton have launched this attack on him as a part of a “scheme” to unfairly sue him in the UK which would benefit them, the report indicated.

However, the lawyer for Grant Thornton has reportedly accused Mehta of making up issues where there are not any. Meanwhile, the spokespeople for both companies have declined to comment on the story. The court is set to give its ruling in the coming weeks, said the report.

Mehta’s case was one of the most high-profile bank fraud cases in India’s diamond industry. A day after it was revealed that former British pilots were being poached by the Chinese military to train its troops, Australia has said it will also investigate such reports. Australia's Defence Minister Richard Marles said he had ordered the department to investigate claims that ex-Australian military pilots were recruited by the flight school, based in South Africa to work in China. "I would be deeply shocked and disturbed to hear that there were personnel who were being lured by a pay check from a foreign state above serving their own country. I have asked the department to investigate these claims and come back to my office with clear advice on this matter," said Marles. After the pandemic struck, the movement was stopped as air travel became next to possible. However, since then, China has quietly ramped up its hiring process yet again. Yesterday, the British Ministery of Defence shot a warning saying pilots who were involved with China risked facing prosecution under the Official Secrets Act, and a national security bill would provide other paths to prosecution. Scientists at the University College London, UK and Austria’s Innsbruck University have developed a more accurate predictive test that can detect the changes in cells which can lead to cervical cancer. This test also has future implications for detecting other common cancers like breast, womb, and ovarian cancer, as it can pick up DNA markers of these types of cancers.

According to the results published in the journal Genome Medicine, for those without cell changes but had human papilloma virus (HPV), the test detected at least 55% of those would show cell changes within the span of four years. HPV is also one of the leading causes of most cervical cancer cases, said the report by the Guardian.

Furthermore, the scientists behind the test had previously also indicated that by using the cervical cells from a routine smear test they were able to detect ovarian and breast cancer or at least predict the likelihood of developing. However, now researchers have said that this test performs better than current methods for identifying women with advanced cell changes who need treatment.

Recent research studied DNA methylation – an extra layer of information on top of the DNA – which indicates which bits of the DNA to read, the report indicated. This information, scientists believe, can help detect cancer and possibly also predict the risk of someone developing it in the future. However, factors like being overweight, smoking, pollution and poor diet can also alter these markers and change how the cells behave.

The data for this study included 1,254 cervical screening samples from women, ranging from low to high risk. This also accounted for samples from women with HPV but no cervical cell changes and samples from women who went on to develop high-risk cell changes within four years.

“Vaccination against the virus that causes cervical cancer is now widely implemented and is leading to changes in the amount and types of the virus circulating in the community,” said ULC professor from the department of women's cancer, Martin Widschwendter. He added, that this in turn also calls for a change in approach for testing and building new “risk-predictive screening programmes around existing, effective cervical sample collection offers real potential for cancer prevention in the future.”

On Tuesday, at least 1,000 drivers from the US-based GXO Logistics in the United Kingdom threatened to stage a five-day protest at the end of this month after a dispute over pay and job cuts, said Unite union. This may affect at least 40% of all deliveries to pubs and venues in the country.

According to reports, the strike will begin from October 31 and go on till November 4 affecting beer supplies to venues and pubs, ahead of the cricket World Cup, by major breweries including Heineken, Stonegate, Admiral Taverns and Shepherd Neame. The workers are also set to begin a continuous overtime ban starting October 24.

Sources suggest that the company delivers to over 4,000 pubs in London and south-east England. Additionally, they also have a network of 22 depots from Inverness to Southampton which is also reportedly the rolling strike action will take place. Beer shortage looms over pubs in UK as delivery drivers threaten to strike over pay disputes

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss is fighting for her political survival, with Conservative MPs threatening to oust her and even allies warning she has just days to turn around her premiership.

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss fights for her political survival

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss on Monday (October 17) apologised in no uncertain terms for her economic reforms that triggered turmoil in UK. However, she vowed to remain prime minister in spite of humiliating climbdowns which have seen her struggling for political survival.

"I do want to accept responsibility and say sorry for the mistakes that have been made... we went too far and too fast," she told the BBC.

However, she said that she was "completely committed to delivering for this country" despite questions over who was now in control of government policy.
Her government on Monday axed almost all of its debt-fuelled tax cuts unveiled last month to avert fresh market chaos.

The shock move by new finance minister Jeremy Hunt who succeeded sacked Kwasi Kwarteng, has left Truss in precarious position politically and voices from Truss' own Conservative Party said that Hunt was a "de facto prime minister"

Hunt estimated the tax changes would raise about £32 billion ($36 billion) per year, after economists estimated the government faced a £60-billion black hole. He also warned of tough spending cuts.

"The prime minister and I agreed yesterday to reverse almost all the tax measures announced in the growth plan three weeks ago," Hunt told parliament, flanked by a grim-faced Truss.

He also announced the formation of an economic advisory council, featuring four experts outside of government.

The shock move by new finance minister Jeremy Hunt who succeeded sacked Kwasi Kwarteng, has left Truss in precarious position politically and voices from Truss' own Conservative Party said that Hunt was a "de facto prime minister" Hunt estimated the tax changes would raise about £32 billion ($36 billion) per year, after economists estimated the government faced a £60-billion black hole. Less than 40 days after taking office, British Prime Minister Liz Truss sacked her finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng and dismissed some of her contentious economic reforms in an effort to stay in power.

An embittered Truss admitted on Friday that her government's plans for unfunded tax cuts had progressed "further and faster" than investors had anticipated, despite the turbulence in the financial markets.

Here is everything that has happened since Truss became the United Kingdom’s prime minister:

Truss becomes PM

Former foreign secretary Liz Truss was elected leader of the ruling Conservative Party on September 5 at a time when the UK is experiencing a cost of living crisis, industrial unrest, and a recession.

Truss, who had long been considered the favourite to succeed Boris Johnson, was elected as the fourth prime minister of the Conservative Party since the 2015 election.

Truss, 47, pledged to move swiftly to address the UK's cost-of-living crisis, announcing that she would develop a strategy to deal with growing energy costs and ensure future fuel supply within a week.

Truss made it clear throughout her run for the presidency that she would defy economic convention by repealing tax increases and eliminating other levies that some analysts said would contribute to higher inflation.

Truss appoints cabinet

Truss appointed a new cabinet on September 7 at the formal request of Queen Elizabeth II, just hours after taking office.

15 new people were appointed on key government roles as a result of the substantial reorganisation, while 16 members of the old cabinet continued to serve in the new one.

As chancellor of the exchequer, Kwasi Kwarteng was one of the most senior members. He took over from Nadhim Zahawi, who was hired in July.

Prior to becoming the first Black Conservative Party cabinet minister in January 2021, Kwarteng held the position of business secretary.

UK's Queen Elizabeth II dies

The monarch, 96, passed away on 8 September. The queen's funeral was held on19 September after a 10-day period of national mourning.

Kwarteng introduces mini-budget

The British government introduced a new mini-budget on September 23 in the parliament with the goal of reducing household taxes and energy costs while promoting economic growth.

Kwarteng's comprehensive new budget would entail reductions to national insurance, stamp duty, and the top tax rate, marking the largest tax decrease budget since 1972.

According to Kwarteng, the budget would address three important issues: the assurance of the energy price, equal assistance for all businesses, and a financing plan for the energy markets.

A proposal was made to lower the highest rate from 45 to 40 per cent and lower the lowest rate from 20 to 19 per cent.

Chaos in UK's financial markets

The UK's recession-threatened economy was intended to be helped by Kwarteng's tax cuts and energy price freeze, but merchants warned of soaring debt to pay for the incentives, which appeared to have the opposite effect.

Following the budget, the market was rocked by the massive unfunded tax cuts, which caused UK government bond yields to skyrocket and caused the pound to drop to a record low of $1.0350 on September 26.

Bank of England intervenes

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced on September 27 that it was "closely monitoring" developments and encouraged the London administration to reverse course in an extremely unprecedented intervention.

After the IMF criticised the UK budget, claiming it "would likely raise inequality" and worsen inflation, the Bank of England (BoE) intervened the next day to restore market confidence in the UK.

The BoE declared that it was temporarily purchasing long-term UK government bonds worth 65 billion pounds ($73 billion) "to restore orderly market conditions."

Truss supports economic plan

On September 29, Truss defended her economic strategy and dismissed the disapproval of the financial markets, asserting that she is prepared to make "tough decisions" in order to stimulate economic growth.

Truss stated that the UK was experiencing "very, very challenging economic conditions" in her first public remarks following the commotion caused by the mini-budget.

However, she claimed that Russia's all-out invasion of Ukraine was the cause of the difficulties, which were widespread.

Truss pulls the plug on the economic plan; sacks Kwarteng

The government made a humiliating U-turn and abandoned its ambitions to lower the highest income tax rate in the nation.

Truss was still under pressure to abandon more of the disastrous mini-budget, so on October 14, she replaced Kwarteng as chancellor with Jeremy Hunt and scrapped the company tax cut proposal, abandoning a crucial element of the economic strategy that had caused market chaos.
