Incoming UK PM Rishi Sunak talks of 'profound' economic challenges in first speech

Rishi Sunak seems all set to become the next British prime minister with the former finance minister gaining the support of several top leaders in the Conservative Party. Sunak’s bid was further strengthened on Sunday as former PM Boris Johnson ruled himself out of the leadership race.

Since Liz Truss resigned from the post following a torrid tenure, Johnson was being considered to be a tough opposition for Sunak in the race. However, the former Prime Minister decided to never launch his campaign stating that it was “simply not the right thing to do” and “not the right time”.

While 60 Conservative Party leaders publicly stated their support for Johnson to return to office, he claimed that he had the backing of 102 – enough to secure the mandate in the race.

“There is a very good chance that I would be successful in the election with Conservative party members, and that I could indeed be back in Downing Street on Friday.”

“But in the course of the last days I have sadly come to the conclusion that this would simply not be the right thing to do. You can’t govern effectively unless you have a united party in parliament.

“And though I have reached out to both Rishi and Penny – because I hoped that we could come together in the national interest – we have sadly not been able to work out a way of doing this.

“Therefore, I am afraid the best thing is that I do not allow my nomination to go forward and commit my support to whoever succeeds. I believe I have much to offer, but I am afraid that this is simply not the right time,” Johnson said in his official statement on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Sunak continued to bolster his support base with Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman, current finance minister Jeremy Hunt and the home secretary Grant Shapps all announced their support for the Indian-origin politician. He was even supported by long-time critic Nadhim Zahawi.

With 100 votes needed to secure a victory, Sunak currently has around 165 supporters.

At present, Penny Mordaunt remains the only competition for Sunak in the leadership race, but the Leader of the House of Commons has only 30 leaders backing her in the competition.

Who is Rishi Sunak? The Indian-origin British MP who is set to become the next PM of UK

After a vacation in the Caribbean, former prime minister Boris Johnson flew back to the UK on Saturday with the intention of making a bold political comeback, while Conservative competitor Rishi Sunak passed the electoral threshold to run for the position of UK prime minister.

Allies told British media that Johnson was "up for it" and that he had cut short a luxurious vacation in the Dominican Republic to enter the contest to succeed departing leader Liz Truss, which appeared to be between three candidates.

The divisive 58-year-old architect of Brexit only stepped down from office in early September, two months after declaring it in the wake of a Tory uprising over a number of scandals.

Opposition politicians and even some members of his own split ruling party have already criticised his apparent attempt to run for office again just a few weeks later. They are calling for stability and togetherness.

"It is simply not right to risk repeating the chaos (and) confusion of the last year," said David Frost, a right-wing formerly loyal minister appointed to the House of Lords by Johnson.

"We must move on," he urged the Tories, adding they "must get behind a capable leader who can deliver a Conservative programme" who he identified as ex-finance minister Sunak.

Frost's remarks are reminiscent to those made by Johnson's deputy prime minister, Dominic Raab, who told Sky News that an upcoming parliamentary investigation into the "Partygate" affair that hounded his former boss would prove to be too distracting.

Sunak's parliamentary friends disclosed late Friday that he has obtained the 100 Conservative MP nominations required to run for office.

Despite rumours that Sunak was about to declare his candidacy, Johnson has also yet to confirm his candidacy.

(With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Johnson back in UK as Sunak qualifies for PM race

The resignation of British Prime Minister, Liz Truss, has triggered yet another Tory leadership race and there is only one question on everybody's mind- who will be UK's next Prime Minister and who is going to succeed Liz Truss.

UK: Rishi Sunak, Boris Johnson yet to declare candidature for PM post

Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson, two competitors within the Conservative party, met in person late on Saturday as they prepared to compete for control of their splintered ruling party, as per reports. The two formerly led Britain's government.

According to the BBC and other news sources, former prime minister Johnson met with ex-finance minister Sunak to discuss the election after returning from a Caribbean vacation earlier in the day with the intention of making a daring political comeback barely weeks after leaving office.

Both have not yet made it known that they intend to run to succeed departing leader Liz Truss, who announced Thursday that she will step down after serving for only 44 turbulent days.

It is believed to be their first in-person talks in months following a dramatic falling out after Sunak's resignation in July, which contributed to the government uprising that finally led to Johnson's removal.

There aren't many facts available concerning the "secret summit" that The Sun and the Sunday Times claimed was going on at almost 10:00 p.m. (2100 GMT). To prevent a Tory "civil war," they were reportedly going to talk about "agreeing to a joint ticket."

That improbable scenario is taking place as Sunak, a 42-year-old Conservative MP, quickly surpasses the party's minimum need of 100 nominations to run for the position of UK leader.

128 Tory legislators have publicly endorsed him, compared to 53 for Johnson and 23 for cabinet member Penny Mordaunt, who was the first to officially announce on Friday.

Despite pals stating he was "up for it," Johnson cut short a luxurious vacation to the Dominican Republic to take part in the apparent three-way fight.

Two months after announcing his departure due to a cabinet uprising over a number of scandals, the contentious 58-year-old architect of Brexit only handed over control in the first few days of September.
