As per AFP, evacuation advisories are not mandatory. Authorities made an effort to emphasise how concerned they were about the weather throughout the weekend since in the past they have had trouble persuading people to seek shelter ahead of big storms.

"Please stay away from dangerous places, and please evacuate if you feel even the slightest hint of danger," Prime Minister Fumio Kishida tweeted after convening a government meeting on the storm.

"It will be dangerous to evacuate at night. Please move to safety while it's still light outside."

Bullet train operations and flights have been halted in the region, along with regional railway lines.

According to the government's Fire and Disaster Management Agency, 2.9 million homes in Kyushu have received evacuation aid thus far.

Typhoon Jebi caused Kansai airport in Osaka to close in 2018, killing 14 people. Floods and landslides during this year claimed the lives of over 200 people in the west region of the country during the country's rainy season.

Around 20 typhoons hit Japan annually, and the country is perpetually in typhoon season.

Scientists predict that climate change will become more intense and frequent with the increasing severity of storms, heat waves, and flash floods.

In advance of a large and powerful typhoon that is forecast to make landfall on Sunday and produce up to half a metre (20 inches) of rain, the Japan Meteorological Agency recommended inhabitants to leave areas of the southern island of Kyushu on Saturday.&nbsp;

The United States&nbsp;Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center has designated Nanmadol as a super typhoon, and it has the potential to be the most deadly tropical storm to hit Japan in decades.

On Saturday afternoon, Nanmadol, the 14th typhoon of the season, was moving northwest at a speed of 20 kilometres (12 miles) per hour as it passed through southern Japan's Minami-Daito Island. According to the JMA, the storm's centre is experiencing winds of 198 km/h (123 mph), with gusts as high as 270 kph.&nbsp;

The storm, which is comparable in strength to an Atlantic Ocean class 5 hurricane, is expected to turn eastward and pass over Tokyo on Tuesday before dissipating into the sea by Wednesday.

As the storm neared, domestic stations displayed pictures of severe gusts and rain pelting Japan's southern island chain of Okinawa.

Some of the islands are remote with only several hundred residents, but the region as a whole has around 1.4 million people, and the Okinawa mainland hosts most of the US military bases in Japan.&nbsp;

The weather agency expects the storm will strengthen to its top category "violent" from Wednesday evening, with gusts up to 270 kilometres per hour.

The intense winds from Wednesday may cause "some houses to collapse", the Okinawa unit of the national weather agency said. 
Heavy rain and high waves will also hit the region.

"Please exercise serious caution for violent wind. Take precautionary steps such as moving to strong buildings before strong winds begin," the agency said.

Japan is currently in typhoon season and is hit by around 20 such storms a year, routinely seeing heavy rains that cause landslides or flash floods.

Powerful typhoon nears southern Japan islands

Several cities in southern China raised their cyclone warning signals on Wednesday, bracing for Tropical Storm Ma-on, which is expected to make landfall along the coast of Guangdong province on Thursday.

At 12:40 PM (0440 GMT), the Hong Kong Observatory issued a strong wind advisory, with speeds up to 62 kph expected. The storm, about 440 km southeast of Hong Kong, will lash the city with heavy rains later Wednesday and into Thursday morning.

Hong Kong issued its third-highest typhoon warning on Wednesday evening as the storm trundled closer to the city, with authorities warning people to stay indoors.

Very hot weather has hung over the city for the past couple of days and temperatures reached as high as 34 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, with Ma-on, which translates to saddle, expected to be closest to the city on Thursday morning.

Hong Kong's financial markets will not open on Thursday if the typhoon signal remains at 8 or higher at 9 AM (0100 GMT). 
 
The Maritime Bureau of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge issued a typhoon-level II emergency response, closing it to shipping.

The ninth cyclone of the season, Ma-on is expected to generate waves of five to eight metres across the northern part of the South China Sea, according to local media. Storm surges are expected to affect several cities in Guangdong province, including Shenzhen, Chaozhou, Huizhou and Yangjiang.

The Shenzhen Meteorological Station upgraded the city's blue typhoon warning signal to yellow, and Zhongshan issued a yellow signal, suspending schools and child care classes throughout the city.

Shenzhen airport said it will suspend operations from 3:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Thursday, according to a statement from its official Weibo account, and the city's railway department suspended some train services between Wednesday and Friday, the local Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

China has a four-tier, colour-coded weather-warning system, with red representing the most severe warning, followed by orange, yellow and blue.

Ma-on is expected to gradually weaken after landfall, forecasters predicted. The winds and rain could bring much-needed relief to southern areas assaulted by days of scorching heat, which has pressured China's national electricity grid, damaged crops and caused wildfires.&nbsp;

Though it will not directly impact Taiwan, the outer edges of Ma-on also brought heavy rain to southern and eastern parts of the island, with flights to the outlying Green Island and Orchid Island cancelled on Wednesday.

As per the authorities, an industrial support ship operating in the South China sea sank in a storm with a possible loss of more dozen crew members.

An engineering vessel that was 160 nautical miles southwest of Hong Kong "suffered substantial damage and broke into two pieces" and the 30-member crew abandoned the ship leaving more than two dozen crew members unaccounted for after their ship broke into two during a typhoon in the South China Sea on Saturday, with rescuers scrambling to find them, according to the Hong Kong Government Flying Service, as reported by AFP.

Three people had been rescued as of 3:00 pm local time (0700 GMT) and were taken to hospital for treatment, authorities said. Dramatic footage provided by Hong Kong authorities showed a person being airlifted onto a helicopter while waves crashed over the deck of the semi-submerged ship below. The three survivors said other crew members may have been swept away by waves before the first helicopter arrived, according to a government statement.

Typhoon Chaba earlier formed in the central part of the South China Sea and on Saturday afternoon made landfall in Guangdong province in southern China. Rescuers in Hong Kong were notified of the incident at 7:25 am local time (2325 GMT on Friday) and found the ship near Chaba's centre, where harsh weather conditions and nearby wind farms made the operation "more difficult and dangerous".

The ship's location recorded wind speeds of 144 kilometres per hour and waves that were 10 metres high, authorities said. The Government Flying Service dispatched two sorties of fixed-wing aircraft and four helicopter sorties, with mainland Chinese authorities also dispatching a rescue boat. Rescuers said they would increase the search area "due to the large number of people missing" and extend the operation into the night if conditions allowed.

Xinhua said that nearly 315,000 of more than 570,000 displaced people are temporarily housed in 1,179 evacuation centres.

More than 500,000 houses were destroyed. Agricultural infrastructure of more than USD 440 million has been damaged so far.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire told an online briefing that the typhoon damaged 141 health facilities, including hospitals, in five areas hit hard by the storm.

The Department of Health (DOH) has monitored food and water-borne diseases like diarrhoea and acute gastroenteritis in typhoon-hit areas.

Some patients were taken to hospitals.

Vergeire urged the evacuees to follow ways to avoid infections amid the Covid-19 pandemic, adding that it is imperative to watch for evacuees with coronavirus symptoms, and make separate rooms for the vulnerable such as the elderly.

She said that the typhoon has also affected 62 testing laboratories for Covid-19 and wasted thousands of doses of vaccines due to power outages.

The government continues to bring aid to the affected areas, including food, drinking water, while restoring damaged roads, telecommunications and houses.
