Tensions between Iran and the United States have intensified following remarks by President Donald Trump. Iran’s IRGC chief declared that the country will not back down from war, while the US deployed a second THAAD battery in Israel to counter regional threats. Iran’s foreign minister also dismissed the possibility of direct talks with Washington, calling them "meaningless."

US President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs have triggered a global backlash, with countries like China imposing steep retaliatory duties and filing complaints with the WTO. European leaders call for tariff reductions, while Tesla's Elon Musk supports zero-tariff trade with Europe. Meanwhile, trade disruptions force automakers like Jaguar to halt US exports, shaking global markets.

US President Donald Trump's net worth has doubled in the last one year, securing the 700th spot on the 2025 Forbes Billionaires List with a net worth of $5.1 billion.
As he grappled with several legal battles and a $454 million fraud judgment, Trump's future finances seemed grim around twelve months ago.
However, he managed to double his wealth in the past year from $2.3 billion to $5.1 billion, according to Forbes.

Trump learned the trick that delays can be as valuable as victories and admitted that he could not afford to pay off the $454 million in cash.
The US president's legal team suggested an appeals court waive or reduce the bond amount. However, courts don't always grant such grace, but they did in this case.
The court dropped the requirement to $175 million and staved off an asset seizure.

How did they land up in jail?

The British couple had been running projects in Afghanistan schools for 18 years and decided to stay in the country after the Taliban seized power in 2021.
At the start of February, they were detained when they travelled to their home in Bamiyan province in a small plane rented by their Chinese-American friend, Faye Hall.
Hall was also detained, but she was released last weekend after the Trump administration lifted bounties worth $10m from the heads of senior Taliban figures.
When Reynolds was detained, he said that he was initially told the plane lacked proper landing permission and they would be released.
Instead, their phones were confiscated and they were transferred to the interior ministry in Kabul, where the couple were separated and then locked up in Pul-e-Charki prison.
Reynolds further complained that the Taliban told him that they had confiscated 59 books from their home that was "against Islam". He was asked why they had them. "I asked, ‘Can you tell me any part of those books which is against Islam?’ ” he said. “No one has been able to, so I think it’s an outrage.
“These things are an utter disgrace and shame. The Taliban have made a mistake and need to face up to it," he added.

BIG WARNING for Canadians travelling to US: Border officers might check your electronics; experts suggest using burner phones

Trump's controversial new tariffs take effect from midnight, marking a fresh chapter in the ongoing trade tensions. While Trump promises "historic results," global leaders are reacting with caution. Earlier this week, Dmitriev met with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. On April 2 and 3, he also met with US officials in Washington on behalf of Putin.

Dmitriev got his degree from the US universities and has served in the American business world.
Born in Kyiv in 1975 in Soviet Ukraine, Dmitriev's education and professional debut makes him a perfect person for an up-and-coming member of Russia's technocratic elite.
He was one of the first Soviet exchange students who travelled to the US, where he studied at Fооthill College in California, at the age of 14.

During Dmitriev's tenure, the RDIF oversaw $40 billion in investment across 100 deals, building relationships with funds from France, Italy, Japan, China, and the Gulf states.
"Recently designated Russian President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle of cronies have long relied on RDIF and Dmitriev to raise funds abroad, including in the United States," the US Treasury Department said.
It added, "While officially a sovereign wealth fund, RDIF is widely considered a slush fund for President Vladimir Putin and is emblematic of Russia's broader kleptocracy."

The 17% rate Trump set for Israel was based on the significant U.S. bilateral trade deficit.
While Trump called these tariffs “reciprocal,” he admitted they’re only about half of what other countries charge the US.
"We will charge them approximately half of what they are and have been charging us," he said.
“I could have done that, yes, but it would have been tough for a lot of countries. We didn’t want to do that,” he added.

Moreover, Trump and Netanyahu are also expected to discuss the Iran nuclear crisis and the war in Gaza.
Trump suggested Netanyahu come to the White House, without setting a clear date. Several hours later, Trump told reporters on Air Force One that Netanyahu would be visiting Washington soon, "maybe even next week."
