New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan expressed gratitude to participants for their bravery as several shared painful details of their pasts in front of reporters during the jury screening process.

He also admired others for their integrity in saying that Trump’s rhetoric would make it hard for them to judge Trump fairly.

Assistant District Attorney Joshua Steinglass informed potential jurors that the prosecution intended to reveal not only bank fraud but also a conspiracy to engage in election fraud and mislead the American voters.

Trump evaded campaign finance regulations by channeling a $130,000 payment to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels through Michael Cohen, his attorney and confidant, subsequently falsely claiming that the funds allocated for reimbursing Cohen were for legal services.

Cohen has admitted&nbsp;he&nbsp;lied to Congress as well as federal tax and election officials.

On Friday (April 19), before leaving court the jurors were asked not to read, listen to or watch anything about the case, or discuss it with anyone.&nbsp;

Two men pleaded guilty on Wednesday to insider trading in securities in the company that ultimately took former U.S. President Donald Trump's media business public.

Michael Shvartsman, 53, head of Miami-based venture capital firm Rocket One Capital, and his brother Gerald Shvartsman, 46, each pleaded guilty to one count of securities fraud before U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman in Manhattan.

Rocket One's chief investment officer, Bruce Garelick, is scheduled to face trial on related charges on April 29.

Prosecutors charged the trio last year with illegally trading on inside information about Trump Media &amp; Technology Group's (TMTG) plan to go public through a merger with a blank-check company. TMTG operates Truth Social, Trump's main social media platform.

Prosecutors said the trio signed confidentiality agreements in June 2021 when they were approached to become early investors in Digital World Acquisition, the blank-check company. The agreements required them to keep information they learned confidential and not trade the company's securities in the open market, prosecutors said.

After hearing the company was in merger talks with TMTG, prosecutors said the trio tipped others and bought Digital World securities, selling them after the deal was announced on Oct. 20, 2021, to make a total of $22 million in illegal profit.

Michael and Gerald Shvartsman said in court that they knew what they were doing was wrong when they traded on nonpublic information.

The Republican presidential candidate's attorneys argued that the judgment's sum was excessive and asked a mid-level state appeals court to postpone its execution in a court filing on Monday.

They stated that obtaining a total appeal bail would "effectively" require "cash reserves approaching $1 billion" and that doing so was "impossible."

They added that so far the defendants had approached 30 surety companies through four separate brokers in order to obtain a bond.

"Enforcing an impossible bond requirement as a condition of appeal would inflict manifest irreparable injury on Defendants," Trump's lawyers wrote.

The lawyers urged that instead, Trump be allowed to post a $100 million bond while he appeals the judgment.&nbsp;

If Trump loses his appeal and it turns out that he cannot afford the money, a bonding company would be responsible for any payout.

Trump's attorneys included a declaration from Gary Giulietti, an executive of the insurance brokerage firm the Lockton Companies, which Trump has hired in order to help him obtain a bond.

Giulietti in his statement wrote that a bond for the entire $464 million "is not possible under the circumstances presented." He also pointed out that many sureties would not issue bonds above $100 million and would only accept cash or securities as collateral, and not real estate.

NATO Chief confirms Europe meeting spending targets amid Trump's criticism

The special counsel prosecuting Donald Trump on federal charges involving the former president's efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss urged the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday to reject Trump's bid to further delay trial proceedings as he presses his claim of immunity.

"The nation has a compelling interest in seeing the charges brought to trial," Special Counsel Jack Smith said in his filing to the justices, adding that "the public interest in a prompt trial is at its zenith where, as here, a former president is charged with conspiring to subvert the electoral process so that he could remain in office."

Smith's filing responded to a request by Trump's lawyers on Monday to put on hold a decision by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejecting the claim of presidential immunity from prosecution.

If the justices do not immediately reject Trump's request, Smith asked that they take up the case and hear it on a fast-track basis.

Smith said Trump's criminal charges reflect an alleged effort to "perpetuate himself in power and prevent the lawful winner of the 2020 presidential election from taking office. The charged crimes strike at the heart of our democracy."

"A president's alleged criminal scheme to overturn an election and thwart the peaceful transfer of power to his successor should be the last place to recognize a novel form of absolute immunity from federal criminal law," Smith added.

Trump's lawyers asked the justices to halt the trial proceedings pending their bid for the full slate of judges on the D.C. Circuit to reconsider the case, and, if necessary, an appeal to the Supreme Court. Smith told the justices that granting such a request would serve only to unnecessarily postpone Trump's trial.

Trump is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden, who defeated him in 2020, in the Nov. 5 U.S. election. If the Supreme Court grants Trump's requests or otherwise does not act quickly to resolve the case, the trial could be pushed to late in the campaign or after the election.

Trump, who served in the White House from 2017 to 2021 and has become the first former president to be criminally prosecuted, has made sweeping claims of immunity both while in office and since leaving the White House.

The Supreme Court in December declined Smith's request to decide the immunity claim even before the D.C. Circuit ruled - a bid by the special counsel to speed up the process of resolving the matter. The justices opted instead to let the lower appeals court rule first, as is customary.

Smith was appointed by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in 2022 to investigate Trump's actions in the aftermath of the 2020 election and his retention of classified documents after leaving the White House in 2021. Smith brought charges against Trump concerning both issues.

A March 4 trial date for Trump in federal court in Washington on four criminal counts pursued by Smith in the election subversion case was postponed, with no new date yet set. Trump has pleaded not guilty and has sought to portray the case as politically motivated.

Illinois board allows Trump to remain on state's Presidential primary ballot

Former US president Donald Trump on Friday (January 12) was ordered to pay about USD 400,000 in legal costs to The New York Times following the dismissal of a lawsuit he filed against them. The former president accused three journalists of engaging in an "insidious plot" to obtain his tax documents for an investigative report published in 2018.

Trump had gone to court against The New York Times in September 2021. The 2018 investigative report went on to win the Pulitzer Prize.

The case against New York Times was dismissed in May 2023. The judge in the commercial division of the New York state Supreme Court ordered Trump pay the defendants the legal costs. The decision was issued on Friday.

"It's very unfair when a political opponent is prosecuted by the (Justice Department)" of President Joe Biden, his likely 2024 election rival, Trump said.

"They feel this is the way they're going to try and win. And that's not the way it goes. It will be bedlam in the country."&nbsp;

On Tuesday, Trump appeared&nbsp;in a court in Washington DC to bat for immunity from prosecution over charges that accuse him of conspiracy to overturn US Presidential Election 2020 results. The court where the 77-year-old former president arrived is just a few blocks away from US Capitol building, which was stormed by his supporters in Janauary 2021. The last attack on the US Capitol building took place when America was still a British colony.

The trial over the election charges is set to begin on March 4. Trump's legal team has appealed quashing the charges claiming that he has "absolute immunity" and can't be prosecuted for his actions while he was in the White House.

By January 6, 2021, although it was clear that Trump had lost the election, he technically still was US president since current President Joe Biden had not formally taken charge.

This is not the first time an immunity claim has been made. Just last month, US District Judge Tanya Chutkan rejected immunity saying that even a former president can't have a "lifelong 'get-out-of-jail-free' pass." Chutkan will preside over the election-related trial against Trump.

Speaking at a campaign event in Iowa on Saturday (Jan 6), Trump called those jailed over charges relating to the attack "hostages" and alleged the government had mistreated them.

<h2>Illinois loyalty oath</h2>

In the US state of Illinois, there's a ballot tradition, whereby candidates pledge against advocating the overthrow of the government.

The loyalty oath is a time-honoured part of the election process in the state. However, it was missing from Trump's package of ballot-access paperwork&nbsp;the Republican submitted on Thursday (Jan 4), reports WBEZ/Chicago Sun-Times.

Condemning Trump, Biden's campaign spokesperson Michael Tyler in a statement on Saturday said: "For the entirety of our nation's history, presidents have put their hand on the Bible and sworn to protect and uphold the Constitution of the United States—and Donald Trump can't bring himself to sign a piece of paper saying he won't attempt a coup to overthrow our government."

"We know he's deadly serious because three years ago today he tried and failed to do exactly that."

As per the Guardian, Trump signed this voluntary oath in his previous presidential runs — 2016 and 2020.

"This is the same man who thinks American troops who died protecting the ideals outlined in the Constitution are suckers and losers – yet calls the convicted felons who violently assaulted and killed police officers on January 6th 'hostages'. Responding to Tyler's statement, Trump's spokesperson Steven Cheung said: "President Trump will once again take the oath of office on January 20th, 2025, and will swear 'to faithfully execute the office of President of the United States and will to the best of my ability preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.'"
