Media reports citing local officials have said that the locomotive and some cars of the train were derailed after a similar incident occurred, on Monday, near Unecha where the locomotive and seven freight wagons were derailed.&nbsp;

The incident, on Tuesday, occurred in the western Bryansk region, which borders both Ukraine and Belarus where Russian officials have reported multiple attacks by pro-Ukrainian sabotage groups since Moscow invaded Kyiv over a year ago.&nbsp;

In a statement, the Bryansk region governor Alexander Bogomaz said, “An unidentified explosive device went off near the Snezhestkaya railway station,” as quoted by the news agency AFP. He added, “A locomotive and several wagons of the train derailed,” adding that there were no casualties. He also did not indicate who was responsible for the incident.&nbsp;

Russian Railways also released a statement without mentioning an explosive device, and said that the train had derailed due to “the intervention of unauthorised persons in the work of rail transport”.&nbsp;

The state operator also confirmed that the incident took place at 7:47 pm (local time) between Snezhetskaya, just to the southeast of Bryansk, and the nearby village of Belye Berega where the rail traffic has&nbsp;been suspended. The railway authorities also said the train’s front locomotive and “around 20 wagons” were derailed.&nbsp; 
 
Meanwhile, the Russian news agency TASS&nbsp;citing officials reported&nbsp;that&nbsp;firefighters were working at the scene and two recovery trains had been dispatched to the area. The local prosecutors have also launched an investigation into the incident, said news agency.&nbsp;

What happened on Monday?

This comes a day after Bogomaz took to Telegram and wrote, “An unidentified explosive device went off, as a result of which a locomotive of a freight train derailed,” adding that there were “no casualties”. Images and videos from the site shared on social media platforms showed plumes of dark grey smoke rising into the air and several tank carriages also seen lying on their side.&nbsp;

The incident occurred at 10:17 am (Moscow time) between regional hub Bryansk and the town of Unecha and the train was reportedly carrying oil products and timber. Notably, the governor of the northern Leningrad region, Alexander Drozdenko, on Monday had said that local power lines were blown up by an “explosive device.”

‘Explosive device’ causes another freight train derailment in Russian region near Ukraine

A bull calf that got hit by a semi-high speed Vande Bharat Express train was catapulted into the air and knocked down an 82-year-old man on Wednesday (April 19) near the Alwar railway station in Rajasthan, killing him instantly. The calf also died on the spot.&nbsp;

The series of incidents, according to India Today, began when a calf got on the tracks and obstructed the Delhi-Jaipur-Ajmer Vande Bharat Express train. Following the train's collision with the calf, a man urinating&nbsp;by the track was struck and killed, and the calf was also killed.&nbsp;As per reports, the incident occurred in the Alwar District of Rajasthan in the jurisdiction of Aravali Vihar Police Station.

Shiv Dayal Sharma, who died, was a former railway worker in the electric department who was standing around 30 metres from the point of impact, as reported by The Hindu.

According to official statistics provided by the Indian Railways, more than 90,000&nbsp;cattle have been ran over by trains since 2019. There were 27,057 cases in 2019–20, while there were 19,960 instances in 2020–21. The number of cases rose to 28,727 in 2021–2022 in this category. There were 26,180 incidents in 2022–2023 as of January 23, 2023.

Indian Railways is currently considering fencing the rail lines along the 622-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad length in order to avoid such incidents. According to Ashwini Vaishnav, the union minister for railways, the around $245.26 crore project got underway in January of this year.

Two incidents of cattle hits were reported in October 2022, one at one at Atul railway station and another&nbsp;at Anand railway station, both in the Indian state of Gujarat. The train's nose had then sustained significant damage in the Atul accident.

“In the current incident the train got a few scratches and continued its run without stopping,” public relations officer of North-Western Railway told The Hindu.

In addition, Vaishnaw has recommended building a 1,000 km long boundary wall since some North Central Railway sections in Uttar Pradesh are susceptible to cattle hits.

On April 25, at around 10:30 am, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi&nbsp;will flag off Kerala's first Vande Bharat Express between Thiruvananthapuram and Kasargod at Thiruvananthapuram Central Station, as reported by the Mint.

The train will cover 11 Districts namely Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargod.

The ministry, in its statement, said that there were "two dead in the train accident at Qalyub, while the injured are in stable condition."

The train accident took place in Qalyub, which is located north of Cairo in the Nile Delta.

The national rail authority of Egypt said that the accident happened when a passenger train while entering Qalyub station, ran through a stop signal.

The officials said that an investigation into the cause of the accident is being carried out. Around 20 ambulances were sent to the accident site and the injured passengers were admitted to nearby hospitals, said health authorities.

A perimeter was formed by the police to hold back the people who had perched on the nearby walls. Later, a crane was brought to lift a derailed car which looked partially crumpled.

The rail accidents in Egypt have been blamed on poor maintenance and infrastructure.

Transport Minister Kamel el-Wazir, in April 2021, fired the head of the rail authority after an uproar over the dilapidated train lines' mismanagement.

"This is a terrible tragedy that is hard to comprehend,"&nbsp;said Deputy Health Minister Mina Gaga. "I feel so sorry for the parents of these kids."

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be visiting the site later in the day.

Greek Railroad Workers Union President Yannis Nitsas said eight rail employees were among the dead, including the two drivers of the freight train and two of the passenger train.

Konstantinos Agorastos, governor of Thessaly region, told SKAI TV that a passenger train travelling from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki and a cargo train from Thessaloniki to Larissa collided outside the city of Larissa in central Greece.&nbsp;

"The collision was very strong," Agorastos said.&nbsp;

"This is a terrible night," Agorastos added. "It's hard to describe the scene."

Medical officials in Larrisa said at least 25 of those wounded are in serious condition.&nbsp;"The evacuation of passengers is under way in very difficult conditions given the severity of the collision of the two trains," fire brigade spokesperson Vassilis Varthakogiannis earlier said.

The governor said 250 passengers were evacuated safely by rescue officials to Thessaloniki on buses.

SKAI TV showed footage of derailed carriages, badly damaged with broken windows and thick plumes of smoke, with debris strewn across the road.&nbsp;

Rescue workers were seen carrying torches in carriages looking for trapped passengers.

A young man who was evacuated to a nearby bridge told SKAI TV that there was panic in the carriage as people were screaming.&nbsp;

Senior officials said the army has also&nbsp;been contacted for assistance in rescue operations.&nbsp;

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that the country's worst-ever rail disaster, in which 43 people died, was a result of "tragic human error".

The prime minister gave the statement after he visited the accident site where a freight train and a passenger train had a head-on collision on Tuesday night.

"Everything shows that the drama was, sadly, mainly due to a tragic human error," said PM Mitsotakis, in a televised address. He called the collision of trains “a horrific rail accident without precedent in our country,” and pledged to carry out a full, independent investigation.

PM Mitsotakis said that the government must provide aid to the injured and help in identifying the dead. “I can guarantee one thing: We will find out the causes of this tragedy, and we will do all that’s in our power so that something like this never happens again,” said Mitsotakis.

"Justice will do its job. People will be held accountable, while the state will be on the side of the people,” he added.

Transport minister resigns, stationmaster arrested

The stationmaster at the last stop of the train in Larissa was arrested by authorities and charged with manslaughter. The officials did not release the name of the man or the exact reason for his arrest, however, the stationmaster is being held responsible for rail traffic on the tracks in that particular stretch.

On Thursday, the stationmaster will appear before a prosecutor and explain how the passenger train received permission to run on the line on which a freight train was running from the other side.

However, the stationmaster has denied any wrongdoing and is blaming the tragic accident on a possible technical failure.

Meanwhile, Greek Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis submitted his resignation. Announcing his decision of stepping down from his position, the transport minister said, "When something so tragic happens, it is impossible to continue and pretend it didn't happen."

Protests and strikes

On Wednesday evening, people protested at the Thessaloniki train station and outside the offices of the railway's Italian operating company, Hellenic Train, in Athens where rocks were thrown by people at the police and building.

A silent vigil was held by demonstrators in Larissa and white roses were brought to make the word Tempe, which is the name of the valley where the accident took place.

A 24-hour strike was announced by the union representing train workers for Thursday, while left-wing groups' members protested in Athens. A 24-hour strike was also called by Athens metro workers who claimed that they faced similar problems as railway employees.

Rescue efforts continue

Cranes and other heavy machinery were used by emergency workers to move large pieces of the collided trains to take out more bodies and body parts.

“It’s unlikely there will be survivors, but hope dies last,” said rescuer Nikos Zygouris.

Larissa’s chief coroner, Roubini Leondari said that she has been handed over 43 bodies for examination and they would need DNA identification as most of them were largely disfigured. “Most (of the bodies) are young people. They are in very bad condition,” she said.

The rescuers present at the accident site said that they have not dealt with a disaster of this magnitude before. Many charred bodies could not be recognised and few passengers were identified through their body parts.

"I've never seen anything like this in my entire life," said a rescue worker. Many people are still missing, which includes two Cyprus nationals.

The police said that they have collected 17 biological samples from remains which will be matched with 23 relatives.

National police said every passenger was accounted for, adding that the accident happened shortly after 8:00 am (0600 GMT) at Milavce.

Earlier, rescuers said 31 people whose lives were not in danger were being treated and seven others were in a critical state.&nbsp;

According to footage shown on&nbsp;Czech&nbsp;public television, one part of the German train was completely mangled, though both vehicles remained upright.&nbsp;

"The situation is serious," Havlicek said as he headed to the scene of the accident.

Czech&nbsp;Prime Minister Andrej Babis tweeted his "sincere condolences to the families of the dead. It is important to save other lives. Then everything must be investigated."

At least three persons died and more than 50 were wounded&nbsp;when a fast train from Munich collided with a passenger train in the Czech Republic.

Some passengers were taken to hospital by helicopter after eight individuals were badly hurt.&nbsp;

Czech Railways said a local passenger train and an international high-speed train that was heading from Munich to the western Czech city of Plzen and the Czech capital of Prague were involved in the collision.

The victims included the drivers of both engines and a female passenger, authorities said.

Authorities gave different death tolls in the days after the crash — partly because so many body parts had to be identified — but earlier this week they settled on 49 and said all victims had now been accounted for.

One French national and two Americans were among those killed.

The driver of the maintenance truck has been held in custody.

Prosecutors are working to determine whether the driver failed to secure the parking brake or if the truck suffered a mechanical failure.

Three coaches were sent crashing off the tracks at Mondobhag station in the town of Kasba when a Dhaka-bound train and a locomotive bound for Chittagong collided.

"At least 16 people have been killed. And another 58 were injured. We have sent the injured to different hospitals in the region," local police chief Anisur Rahman told AFP.

Cranes and other lifting gear were brought in to rescue trapped passengers, many of whom were asleep when the early morning crash took place.

"There was a loud noise, then I saw the train was completely ripped apart," one injured passenger told Somoy TV.

"All the people around me were crying. There was blood everywhere. Some people had broken hands and legs," another told the broadcaster.&nbsp;

"My son was with me. I still don't know what happened to him," the man added.

Hayat Ud Doula Khan, a government official in the district, said the Dhaka-bound Turna Nishitha train, hit the Chittagong-bound Udayan Express at about 3:00 am as the Udayan was about to go through Mondobhog station.

Khan told AFP that the Turna Nishitha should have waited outside the station to let the other train pass and that an investigation had been started. A&nbsp;Bangladesh&nbsp;railway official told reporters faulty signals could be to blame.

"Three coaches were badly mangled and the victims are from these coaches," Khan said, adding that train services out of Dhaka had been halted because of the accident.

Bangladesh: 16 dead after train collision

Five persons sustained injuries after three coaches of Lingampalli-Falaknuma train and four coaches of Kurnool City-Secunderabad Hundry Express derailed, following a collision, reported news agency ANI.

The two trains collided at the Kacheguda Railway Station in Hyderabad on Monday morning.

The incident happened in Liaquatpur, near Rahim Yar Khan of Punjab province when the train was en route for Lahore from Karachi, Geo TV reported.

The train caught fire following a gas cylinder explosion.

"Two cooking stoves blew up. They were cooking, they had (cooking) oil which added fuel to fire," Geo News quoted Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed as saying.

Rasheed also said that rescue operation was underway along with the efforts to restore the railway line. "The track will be functional in two hours", he added.

The district rescue service officer Baqir Hussain confirmed the death toll and added that the dead bodies would be identified through DNA tests.
