At least 1,314 transformers are out of order in Himachal Pradesh, the State Emergency Operation Centre stated. Furthermore, heavy showers and snowfall in Spiti also interrupted mobile networks.</p>

<p>A batch of Russians are to arrive as first tourists in North Korea for the first time since it implemented some of the harshest COVID-19 border lockdowns in early 2020, reports said on Friday (Jan 12).</p>

<p>Entry to North Korea has been severely restricted ever since the Kim Jong Un government closed borders at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. A recent defector testimony disclosed that North Korea had executed citizens for violating&nbsp;quarantine rules imposed during the pandemic, as reported by Nknews.</p>

<p>Tourists are returning after North Korea announced last year that it would begin permitting the entry of citizens who had been barred from the country for almost four years due to pandemic border controls.</p>

<p>Concerns are flagged by Human Rights Watch which stated in its World Report 2024 that the North Korean government continued to exploit the Covid&nbsp; pandemic to enforce “shoot on sight” orders on its northern border, restricting movement, maintaining trade restrictions, and reinforcing ideological control.</p>

<p>As outlined in an online itinerary, the tourists are scheduled to depart on February&nbsp;9 and will include stops in Pyongyang and a ski resort.</p>

<p>Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) President, Jyoti Mayal told WION that there has been a surge in travel inquiries for Lakshadweep while there are none for Maldives right now. Mayal also noted that Maldives' Tour Operators and Travel Associations, in a letter to the organisation, have distanced themselves from the remarks by the sitting minister of Maldives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mayal spoke to WION in detail and addressed concerns within the Maldives travel industry while also spotlighting opportunities in domestic tourism. Notably, Mariyam Shiuna, a sitting Maldives minister, made some derogatory comments about India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he visited Lakshadweep.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Maldives Tour Operators and Travel Associations are reaching out to TAAI because we have a MoU with the Associations and the Ministry of Tourism there for working together. They are saying that this was not the opinion of everyone and this is an individual opinion."</p>

<p>Highlighting the impact of political statements, Mayal stated, "When something like this happens, when some politician speaks, it is always the common man that gets affected. Everyone wants good business. Who does not want business from other countries so that they can prosper?"&nbsp;</p>

<p>"When we go ahead and go very vocal about it that we will not support Maldives, which is also very rightly so, because the views have come from a sitting minister. So obviously we will react and the common man bears the brunt and not the ministers."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>India's domestic tourism market emerging&nbsp;</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Mayal said that India does not solely rely on Maldives for tourism.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She pointed out that India has been actively promoting domestic destinations, particularly in the post-COVID era, with emerging markets and improved infrastructure.</p>

We have last-mile connectivity, good hotels coming up, Bed and Breakfast coming up, and trains and flights have come in."</p>

<p>"The only thing where we are lacking right now is inbound tourism, but even those numbers will come up once the government realises what they have to put into it," she added while indicating a positive outlook for the tourism sector within India.</p>

<h2><strong>Lakshadweep as a travel destination&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>While Mayal spoke on the growing interest in Lakshadweep she also mentioned the existing connectivity challenges.</p>

<p>"One has to understand that the connectivity is not so great right now. With one flight.. and you need permits to visit the islands. One does not need a permit to visit Andaman and Nicobar island but Lakhshwadeep has always been a protected area. For instance, Taj is opening two resorts there. So all the hotel chains are going to look into it. Airlines are looking at it now. If the PM wants us to do this, who is going to stop us?"</p>

<p>However, with the Prime Minister's visit to the region, she is anticipating that there will now be increased investment and development.</p>

<p>"If Lakshadweep&nbsp;is what they want to bring as an emerging, beautiful, and high-end destination, it is the right time to do it. We have anyway missed out on a lot of opportunities when our infrastructure was not good. But as it is getting better and better, there is an opportunity on how we can promote our own country," she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mayal said that the peak season for Maldives tourism is from September to April.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She noted that while sentiments were hurt due to the derogatory comments, immediate cancellations were unlikely due to substantial cancellation charges and difficulties in obtaining refunds, just as was the case during the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>

<p>"During Covid, people were struggling to get refunds so people are not going to waste their money now," she added.&nbsp;</p>

Inquiries for Lakshadweep surging, none for Maldives: TAAI President Jyoti Mayal to WION

<p>Indian Army on Wednesday (Dec 13) rescued more than 800 tourists who were stranded in high altitude regions in the eastern part of Sikkim state, media reports said citing officials. The tourists found themselves stuck in the mountainous areas due to heavy snowfall and the bad weather.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Among those stuck in the region included elderly people, women as well as children. Indian Army's Trishakti Corps carried out the successful rescue mission. The mission which started on December 13,&nbsp;continued till late evening.</p>

<p>As part of the rescue mission, stranded tourists were taken to safer areas in the state. To help the people in the shivering temperatures, shelter and warm clothing were also provided by the Indian Army.</p>

<p>As per officials cited by the media, medical aid and hot meal arrangements were also made.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The quick reaction by the troops provided relief and comfort to the stranded tourists under inclement weather conditions. The stranded Tourists expressed their deep gratitude for the immediate relief provided by the army,” an army release reportedly stated.&nbsp;</p>

Indian Army's Trishakti Corps carried out the successful rescue mission. The mission which started on December 13, continued till late evening. As part of the rescue mission, stranded tourists were taken to safer areas in the state. To help the people in the shivering temperatures, shelter and warm clothing were also provided by the Indian Army. As per officials cited by the media, medical aid and hot meal arrangements were also made. The stranded Tourists expressed their deep gratitude for the immediate relief provided by the army,” an army release reportedly stated. <p>This comes as Israel is in the midst of facing a surprise attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel is in a state of war which has since prompted Western countries to ramp up security for its Jewish residents amid rise in tensions.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What happened in Egypt?</strong></h2>

<p>The policeman fired “at random” using “his personal weapon” at an Israeli tour group visiting Pompey’s Pillar site in Alexandria, the state-affiliated private television Extra News said, quoting a security source, as per AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The suspected assailant who had also injured one other person has since reportedly been detained. The security forces quickly cordoned off the site of the attack, as per local media reports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Israeli foreign ministry also&nbsp;confirmed two Israelis and an Egyptian tour guide were killed by a local and said it is looking into the reports about the incident. "In addition, there is a wounded Israeli in moderate condition," it added, in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Two Egyptian security sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that the suspected gunman was a police officer.&nbsp;</p>

Venice to start charging entry fees from visitors in 2024

<p>Around 2,500 tourists were evacuated from Corfu, a popular Greek island, after wildfires spread, said a spokesman for the fire department on Monday (July 24).</p>

<p>Yannis Artopios said that fires have been raging in the north of the island as 2,466 people were evacuated overnight between Sunday and Monday, but no hotels or houses suffered destruction so far.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Corfu has been the latest island of Greece to have issued an evacuation order, as the country fights wildfires.</p>

<p>In the photos shared on social media, flames are seen engulfing Corfu. Fire also broke out in the northern part of the island, which is seen as a destination popular with British tourists.</p>

<p>This comes after around 19,000 people were also evacuated from the island of Rhodes, which was also engulfed by fire. A lot of people were forced to flee their hotels as the wildfires continued to spread from the centre of the Greek island.</p>

<p>For days now, Greece has been battling with searing heat as temperatures exceed 40C across the nation, and fires continue to blaze for nearly a week in some areas.</p>

<p>On Monday, a planned national holiday was cancelled "in view of the extraordinary conditions prevailing in the country due to the fires", said the Greek presidency.</p>

<p>Greece's Emergency Communications Service on Sunday evening had issued evacuation orders for various areas of Corfu.</p>

<p>People living in the areas of Santa, Megoula, Porta, Palia, Perithia and Sinies on Corfu island were asked to evacuate. A government official said that the boats in the area were dispatched to evacuate residents by sea.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Corfu and Rhodes, which have been battling wildfires, are popular tourist destinations which are thronged by hundreds of thousands of Brits every year.</p>

<p>"We are in the seventh day of the fire and it hasn't been controlled," said Rhodes Deputy Mayor Konstantinos Taraslias, while speaking to state broadcaster ERT. Tourists were forced to spend their nights on the floors of the airport, waiting for repatriation flights.</p>

Ivan+Haley 23: Outrage after tourist captured carving name of girlfriend into Rome’s Colosseum

<p lang="en-US">Around 200 tourists, who had thronged to the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh for their summer vacations, lived a nightmare when they were stranded in at least a 15 km-long traffic jam with no availability of hotel rooms for 20 hours because of the blockade on the national highway&nbsp;which connects Mandi and Kullu in the state.<br />

Since last evening, the highway was blocked because of landslides and flash floods which were triggered by heavy rainfall in the hilly state. According to news agency PTI, officials said that explosives were used to blast heavy boulders which had blocked the road.<br />

However, after 20 hours, the tourists got some respite as the Mandi-Kullu highway was finally opened for traffic movement. However, in those 20 hours, the commuters had a harrowing time.</p>

"Multiple landslides took place between Mandi and Sundarnagar. At 10 pm, the police stopped us and asked us to go back. The traffic jam here is at least 15 km long," said Hasan, while speaking to NDTV.<br />

"No tourist here was prepared for this. There are families, kids. Some have booked whole buses. Some are waiting at dhabas, no one could find a hotel room. They are worried for their children," he stated.<br />
<br />
Hasan emphasised that tourist resorts and power projects are present in these areas.&nbsp;However, no alternative roads are available which connect them. "A highway is shut from 5 pm yesterday, but the road hasn't been cleared even now," he stated.</p>

<p>Heavy rainfall&nbsp;in North Sikkim led to landslides and flash floods, resulting in the stranding of thousands of tourists. The Indian Army, along with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), undertook an operation and rescued over 3,500 stranded individuals on Saturday, as per media reports. Troops from the Striking Lion Division, Trishakti Corps, Indian Army, and the BRO worked tirelessly in adverse weather conditions to create a temporary crossing over the area affected by flash floods.</p>

The stranded individuals were provided help&nbsp;to cross the river and were offered&nbsp;essentials such as hot meals, tents, and medical support. A total of 36 foreign tourists found themselves stranded at hotels in the picturesque areas of Lachen and Lachung. These areas serve as gateways to several scenic destinations.</p>

<p>The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Northeast India, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim over the next five days. This prediction poses additional challenges for the ongoing rescue operations and reinforces the need for swift action to ensure the safety of the stranded individuals.</p>

<h2><strong>Ongoing restoration efforts and support</strong></h2>

<p>The focus now is on restoring road connectivity in the affected areas, while the evacuation of tourists continues. Tents and medical aid posts have been set up to cater to the needs of the stranded individuals. The Indian Army remains committed to providing necessary assistance until the route is cleared for their onward journey.</p>

<p>A newborn elk calf was put in the car by visitors on Memorial Day weekend and brought to the West Yellowstone Police Department. Later, the calf ran into the forest. Its condition is not known, said the park.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On May 28, two adult black bears, who were dark chocolate brown in colour, lost their lives after they were struck in separate vehicle collisions in the park, stated Yellowstone.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, an adult male black bear was hit by a vehicle near milepost 14 on US Highway 191 in Yellowstone's northwestern section.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Another adult male black bear was hit and killed by a vehicle at milepost 29 on US Highway 191 later in the evening, said the park.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One bison and one elk were also separately hit in the last few days, Yellowstone said.</p>

<p>The Catholic News Agency reported that the authorities have canonised 100 incorruptible bodies after their bodies defied the natural process of decaying. However, experts claimed that it is not very uncommon for dead bodies to remain well-preserved, especially in the initial years after death.<br />

Speaking to CNN, Western Carolina University Associate Professor and Director of Forensic Anthropology Nicholas V Passalacqua said, “It’s hard to say how common this is, because bodies are rarely exhumed after burial. But there are many famous cases of well-preserved human remains. Not just things like Egyptian mummies which were intentionally preserved, but also things like the Bog Bodies of Europe which were very well preserved for thousands of years because they were in environments with low oxygen that restricted bacterial grown and access of the remains to scavengers.”</p>

Till May 29, the body will be laid out in the sisters’ chapel when the sisters plan a rosary procession. After the procession, the body of Sister Wilhelmina will be encased in glass near the altar of St. Joseph in the chapel.</p>
