<p>A batch of Russians are to arrive as first tourists in North Korea for the first time since it implemented some of the harshest COVID-19 border lockdowns in early 2020, reports said on Friday (Jan 12).</p>

<p>Entry to North Korea has been severely restricted ever since the Kim Jong Un government closed borders at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. A recent defector testimony disclosed that North Korea had executed citizens for violating&nbsp;quarantine rules imposed during the pandemic, as reported by Nknews.</p>

<p>Tourists are returning after North Korea announced last year that it would begin permitting the entry of citizens who had been barred from the country for almost four years due to pandemic border controls.</p>

<p>Concerns are flagged by Human Rights Watch which stated in its World Report 2024 that the North Korean government continued to exploit the Covid&nbsp; pandemic to enforce “shoot on sight” orders on its northern border, restricting movement, maintaining trade restrictions, and reinforcing ideological control.</p>

<p>This reportedly followed discussions between the governor of Russia's far eastern region of Primorsky Krai and officials in Pyongyang in December.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As outlined in an online itinerary, the tourists are scheduled to depart on February&nbsp;9 and will include stops in Pyongyang and a ski resort.</p>

<p>Media reports earlier pointed out that satellite image analysis before and in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic along the China and Russia border revealed the extent of the restrictive measures implemented by Kim Jong Un regime.</p>

<p>"But given that no tourists have been for four-plus years, any tourism trip can be viewed as a positive step forward."</p>

<p>Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) President, Jyoti Mayal told WION that there has been a surge in travel inquiries for Lakshadweep while there are none for Maldives right now. Mayal also noted that Maldives' Tour Operators and Travel Associations, in a letter to the organisation, have distanced themselves from the remarks by the sitting minister of Maldives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mayal spoke to WION in detail and addressed concerns within the Maldives travel industry while also spotlighting opportunities in domestic tourism. Notably, Mariyam Shiuna, a sitting Maldives minister, made some derogatory comments about India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he visited Lakshadweep.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Maldives Tour Operators and Travel Associations are reaching out to TAAI because we have a MoU with the Associations and the Ministry of Tourism there for working together. They are saying that this was not the opinion of everyone and this is an individual opinion."</p>

<p>With many Indian tourists calling for a boycott of Maldives as a travel destination, Mayal said that it is the common man of Maldives who is paying the price of the row that erupted&nbsp;after derogatory remarks made by a sitting minister.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Highlighting the impact of political statements, Mayal stated, "When something like this happens, when some politician speaks, it is always the common man that gets affected. Everyone wants good business. Who does not want business from other countries so that they can prosper?"&nbsp;</p>

<p>"When we go ahead and go very vocal about it that we will not support Maldives, which is also very rightly so, because the views have come from a sitting minister. So obviously we will react and the common man bears the brunt and not the ministers."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>India's domestic tourism market emerging&nbsp;</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Mayal said that India does not solely rely on Maldives for tourism.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She pointed out that India has been actively promoting domestic destinations, particularly in the post-COVID era, with emerging markets and improved infrastructure.</p>

<p>"The only thing where we are lacking right now is inbound tourism, but even those numbers will come up once the government realises what they have to put into it," she added while indicating a positive outlook for the tourism sector within India.</p>

<h2><strong>Lakshadweep as a travel destination&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>While Mayal spoke on the growing interest in Lakshadweep she also mentioned the existing connectivity challenges.</p>

<p>"One has to understand that the connectivity is not so great right now. With one flight.. and you need permits to visit the islands. One does not need a permit to visit Andaman and Nicobar island but Lakhshwadeep has always been a protected area. For instance, Taj is opening two resorts there. So all the hotel chains are going to look into it. Airlines are looking at it now. If the PM wants us to do this, who is going to stop us?"</p>

<p>However, with the Prime Minister's visit to the region, she is anticipating that there will now be increased investment and development.</p>

<p>"If Lakshadweep&nbsp;is what they want to bring as an emerging, beautiful, and high-end destination, it is the right time to do it. We have anyway missed out on a lot of opportunities when our infrastructure was not good. But as it is getting better and better, there is an opportunity on how we can promote our own country," she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mayal said that the peak season for Maldives tourism is from September to April.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She noted that while sentiments were hurt due to the derogatory comments, immediate cancellations were unlikely due to substantial cancellation charges and difficulties in obtaining refunds, just as was the case during the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>

<p>"During Covid, people were struggling to get refunds so people are not going to waste their money now," she added.&nbsp;</p>

Inquiries for Lakshadweep surging, none for Maldives: TAAI President Jyoti Mayal to WION

<p>Indian Army on Wednesday (Dec 13) rescued more than 800 tourists who were stranded in high altitude regions in the eastern part of Sikkim state, media reports said citing officials. The tourists found themselves stuck in the mountainous areas due to heavy snowfall and the bad weather.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Among those stuck in the region included elderly people, women as well as children. Indian Army's Trishakti Corps carried out the successful rescue mission. The mission which started on December 13,&nbsp;continued till late evening.</p>

<p>As part of the rescue mission, stranded tourists were taken to safer areas in the state. To help the people in the shivering temperatures, shelter and warm clothing were also provided by the Indian Army.</p>

<p>As per officials cited by the media, medical aid and hot meal arrangements were also made.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The quick reaction by the troops provided relief and comfort to the stranded tourists under inclement weather conditions. The stranded Tourists expressed their deep gratitude for the immediate relief provided by the army,” an army release reportedly stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), the count of foreign visitors, both for leisure and business purposes, reached 2.18 million last month, a slight uptick from August's 2.16 million.</p>

<p>This surge in numbers is equal to a noteworthy 96.1 per cent recovery compared to the levels observed in 2019 — before the onset of the global COVID-19 travel restrictions — reports the news agency.</p>

<p>The rapid resurgence in arrivals peaked at 2.32 million in July, fuelled by increased international flight capacities. The yen's depreciation, to a nearly 33-year low, has also added to making Japan an increasingly attractive and cost-effective destination.</p>

<p>Talking to Reuters, John Hardisty, a 48-year-old engineer from Hawaii, noted the stark contrast in expenses between the United States and Japan.</p>

<p>Economist Masato Koike from Sompo Institute Plus credits this to the ramifications of the treated water issue from Japan's Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. Koike says, "The trend towards recovery is likely to remain unchanged."</p>

<p>While the recent data reflects promising growth, with over 17 million visitors arriving in Japan during the first nine months of 2023, it is still significantly lagging from the peak of approximately 32 million visitors recorded in 2019.</p>

<p>This comes after around 19,000 people were also evacuated from the island of Rhodes, which was also engulfed by fire. A lot of people were forced to flee their hotels as the wildfires continued to spread from the centre of the Greek island.</p>

<p>For days now, Greece has been battling with searing heat as temperatures exceed 40C across the nation, and fires continue to blaze for nearly a week in some areas.</p>

<p>On Monday, a planned national holiday was cancelled "in view of the extraordinary conditions prevailing in the country due to the fires", said the Greek presidency.</p>

<p>Greece's Emergency Communications Service on Sunday evening had issued evacuation orders for various areas of Corfu.</p>

<p>People living in the areas of Santa, Megoula, Porta, Palia, Perithia and Sinies on Corfu island were asked to evacuate. A government official said that the boats in the area were dispatched to evacuate residents by sea.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Corfu and Rhodes, which have been battling wildfires, are popular tourist destinations which are thronged by hundreds of thousands of Brits every year.</p>

<p>"We are in the seventh day of the fire and it hasn't been controlled," said Rhodes Deputy Mayor Konstantinos Taraslias, while speaking to state broadcaster ERT. Tourists were forced to spend their nights on the floors of the airport, waiting for repatriation flights.</p>

"No tourist here was prepared for this. There are families, kids. Some have booked whole buses. Some are waiting at dhabas, no one could find a hotel room. They are worried for their children," he stated.<br />

Hasan emphasised that tourist resorts and power projects are present in these areas.&nbsp;However, no alternative roads are available which connect them. "A highway is shut from 5 pm yesterday, but the road hasn't been cleared even now," he stated.</p>

<p>Last week, a plea was issued by the park asking the tourists to drive carefully and abide by the safety regulations after several reports emerged of fatal collisions between animals and vehicles.</p>

<p>“In recent days, some actions by visitors have led to the endangerment of people and wildlife and resulted in the death of wildlife,” stated the park&nbsp;in its press release.</p>

<p>“The park calls on visitors to protect wildlife by understanding how their actions can negatively impact wildlife," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A newborn elk calf was put in the car by visitors on Memorial Day weekend and brought to the West Yellowstone Police Department. Later, the calf ran into the forest. Its condition is not known, said the park.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On May 28, two adult black bears, who were dark chocolate brown in colour, lost their lives after they were struck in separate vehicle collisions in the park, stated Yellowstone.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, an adult male black bear was hit by a vehicle near milepost 14 on US Highway 191 in Yellowstone's northwestern section.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Another adult male black bear was hit and killed by a vehicle at milepost 29 on US Highway 191 later in the evening, said the park.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One bison and one elk were also separately hit in the last few days, Yellowstone said.</p>

<p>"Last year, two visitors were gored by bison after getting too close to the animals," the park informed.</p>

<p>The park stated they would be “significantly increasing speed enforcement” on US Highway 191 where the speed limit is 55 mph. On most of the park roads, the limit has been kept at 45 mph or less, Yellowstone stated. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The park further appealed to drivers to carefully drive at night, stating that light is absorbed by the animal fur, &nbsp;which makes them harder to detect.</p>

<p>“Approaching wild animals can drastically affect their well-being and, in some cases, their survival. When an animal is near a campsite, trail, boardwalk, parking lot, on a road, or in a developed area, leave it alone and give it space,” stated the park, in the release.</p>

Not just things like Egyptian mummies which were intentionally preserved, but also things like the Bog Bodies of Europe which were very well preserved for thousands of years because they were in environments with low oxygen that restricted bacterial grown and access of the remains to scavengers.”</p>

Italy's beautiful town imposes hefty fine on tourists for taking selfies

<p>With effect from 30 May 2023, the United States increased some nonimmigrant visa (NIV) application processing costs, making student and tourist visas more expensive, as per US State Department.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The application fee has gone up from $160 to $185 for visitor visas for business or tourism (B1/B2s), as well as other non-petition-based NIVs including student and exchange visitor visas.</p>

<p>For several petition-based nonimmigrant worker visas, H, L, O, P, Q, and R categories, the application fee has increased from $190 to $205.</p>

<p>H, L, O, P, Q, and R visas are for temporary workers, those who wish to visit the United States for employment that will last a set amount of time. There are several categories exist within them based on the nature of employment.</p>

<p>Any fee payment&nbsp;for a visa interview made on or after 1 October 2022 is valid for 365 days from the day the fee payment invoice was issued.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The validity of fees paid by applicants prior to October 1, 2022 will last through 30 September, 2023.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per State Department, visa fees are determined based on the findings of an annual review of service costs. The majority of non-petition-based NIV costs last underwent an upgrade in 2012, while certain additional NIV fees underwent an update in 2014.</p>

<p>"Visas for work and tourism are essential to President Biden’s foreign policy, and we recognize the critical role international travel plays in the U.S. economy," the US State Department said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

For several petition-based nonimmigrant worker visas, H, L, O, P, Q, and R categories, the application fee has increased from $190 to $205. H, L, O, P, Q, and R visas are for temporary workers, those who wish to visit the United States for employment that will last a set amount of time. There are several categories exist within them based on the nature of employment. All other consular fees remain unchanged. <p>The Indonesian island of Bali has witnessed an uptick in the number of Russian and Ukrainian tourists since the beginning of what Moscow has described as its “special military operation” in Kyiv. The reports of bad behaviour and criminal activities allegedly committed by Russian and Ukrainian tourists include overstaying their visas, working illegally as hairdressers, unauthorised tour guides and taxi drivers, reported CNN.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The incidents have reportedly prompted Bali Governor Wayan Koster to propose that a visa-on-arrival policy for visitors from the two aforementioned countries be terminated. “I have written a letter to the ministries (Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry and Law and Human Rights Ministry) requesting that the visa facility be revoked for Russians and Ukrainians”, said Koster, as per local media reports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the Indonesian government, nearly 60,000 Russians visited Bali in 2022 after it lifted its Covid-related restrictions while 22,500 people from Russia have arrived on the island since the beginning of this year alone. On the other hand, over 7,000 Ukrainians arrived in 2022 while some 2,500 came to Bali in the first month of this year, reported CNN.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Indonesia allows citizens of&nbsp;certain countries including Russia and Ukraine to apply for a visa on arrival&nbsp;in the country, while others have to apply before departure. Meanwhile, the country’s Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno said that the number of tourists from Russia and Ukraine “who have...caused problems is not yet significant”. He added,&nbsp;that any plans to change visa rules must be “carefully reviewed” and will be discussed with all the stakeholders.</p>

<p>While the reports of misbehaving tourists are not necessarily new in Bali, it seems as though Balinese authorities wish to make an example out of the tourists from the two countries, as per CNN. “Why these two countries? Because they are at war so they flock here,” Koster had said in a news conference previously.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a report by Bloomberg, Indonesia has deported some 47 people from the popular tourist destination amid a crackdown on foreigners for misusing their visas to work, out of which 13 were Russians.&nbsp;Reports also suggest that the Bali government is planning to ban tourists from renting motorcycles following a series of road accidents. Notably, in January, a Ukrainian and Russian visitor died in a vehicle collision.</p>

<p>According to local media reports, Koster has announced a province-wide crackdown on misbehaving foreigners which includes driving without a licence, not wearing a helmet, or driving dangerously. Furthermore, the Bali police, last week also launched a five-day special operation where over 475 police personnel will closely monitor foreigners in Bali. The officials have also reportedly assured that well-behaved visitors to Bali have nothing to worry about.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's a beautiful sight, but sad at the same time, because it's caused by drought. We hope it will be short-lived," said Alberto Pampuri, a tourist who cycled to the island along with his wife and two friends.</p>

<p>The "Floating Piers" installation which was created by artist Christo in 2016 was recalled by the unusual phenomenon when people place yellow floating footbridges across nearby Lake Iseo.</p>

<p>"But they were artificial bridges, whereas this is a natural work of art," Agata Carteri, a 48-year-old teacher, said. Warm temperatures, no spell of rain in six weeks and declining snow in the surrounding mountains have resulted in the decline in water levels of Garda, which is the largest lake in Italy, to its lowest level in winter in the span of 30 years.</p>

<p>Over the last few decades, the waterline has receded to 60-70cm, which is below the average. Five years ago, Matteo Fiori had waded his way to San Biagio island, which is also called the Island of Rabbits, while keeping his rucksack on his head to keep it dry.</p>

<p>"The water came up to my chest, it was an adventure," said the social worker, while surveying the newly-emerged causeway.</p>
