The Toronto International Film Festival said Thursday it was pausing all upcoming screenings of the controversial documentary Russians at War&nbsp;after receiving "significant threats."

"We have been made aware of significant threats to festival operations and public safety," festival organizers said in a statement, pointing to reports it received "indicating potential activity in the coming days that pose significant risk."

"This is an unprecedented move for TIFF," read the statement, adding: "Given the severity of these concerns, we cannot proceed as planned."

Anastasia Trofimova first presented at the Venice Film Festival Russians at War,&nbsp;in which she embedded with a Russian battalion as it advanced across eastern Ukraine after Moscow launched its invasion in February 2022.

It was to have its North American premiere in Toronto on Friday, followed by additional screenings on Saturday and Sunday.

Both in Venice and Toronto it has sparked outrage across Ukrainian cultural and political circles against what many consider a pro-Kremlin film that seeks to whitewash and justify Moscow's assault.

Canada's deputy prime minister, Chrystia Freeland, deplored its screening in Toronto, saying "there can be no moral equivalency in our understanding of this conflict."

Canadian public broadcaster TVO, which had helped fund the documentary, pulled its support for the film and said it would not be airing it.

Bell Canada is ending its long-standing partnership with the Toronto International Film Festival. The telecommunications company&nbsp;has been sponsoring the film festival since 1995.&nbsp;

The partnership will end with the 48th season of the Toronto International Film Festival. In a statement to Variety, the company said, ''Bell has had a terrific partnership with TIFF for the past 28 years."

"We’re proud of our partnership to help make TIFF a leading global destination for film and to support Canadian content and talent on the world stage."

The 28 years of financial ties came to an end at a time when the industry was struggling to recover from the pandemic lockdown. And this year, the festival is going to be impacted by the ongoing Hollywood strikes. In the wake of the ongoing actors' and writers'&nbsp;strike, members are not allowed to take part in any promotional event for any film. Following the same, many big stars are going to skip the film festival.&nbsp;Despite the strike, the TIFF CEO assured earlier this year that the festival is in great shape.&nbsp;

Toronto Film Festival lead sponsor Bell cut ties with the event after 28 years

The Toronto film festival began in somber mood Thursday&nbsp;as theaters dimmed their lights for the passing of Queen Elizabeth II before a Netflix drama about Syrian refugees launched North America's largest movie gathering.&nbsp;

The Princess of Wales and Royal Alexandra theaters -- both festival venues named for members of Britain's royal family -- switched off their marquee signs as news spread of the death of the Commonwealth monarch.

"As we gather to celebrate the power of film to move us and to illuminate our world, I want to acknowledge the passing today of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," said festival head Cameron Bailey.

"Our thoughts go out to everyone here and around the world mourning her loss."

"Ninety-six is a fantastic age, but I just think it's sad," said actor Matthias Schweighofer, on the red carpet for his opening night film "The Swimmers."

The drama tells the true story of Syrian sisters Yusra and Sara Mardini, who nearly drowned in the Mediterranean in 2015 as they tugged a rubber boat packed with refugees to a Greek island.&nbsp;

Their heroics drew international attention, and a year later, Yusra won her heat in the Rio Olympics as part of the Games' first ever refugee team.

As well as showing the Mardinis' harrowing journey, 'The Swimmers' aims to put a relatable face on refugees. It portrays the sisters' carefree lives before war arrived, and their bitter bemusement at finding European tourists frolicking in the same sea they had barely survived crossing hours earlier.

"We really hope that it will change the mind of a lot of people, because a lot of people have a wrong image of refugees," Nathalie Issa, who plays Yusra, told AFP.

"I know how badly (people in the West) are seeing the refugees, I know how Arabs are seen, I know how they portray them in films," added Manal Issa, playing Sara.

New Zealander Taika Waititi`s 'Jojo Rabbit' on Sunday won the audience award given at the end of the Toronto International Film Festival, which has in many past years been a bellwether for Academy Award winners. 
 
'Jojo Rabbit' is a comic satire about a 10-year-old German boy Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) during the World War Two, who finds out his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic and turns for help to his imaginary friend Adolph Hitler (Waititi). 
 
Last week, Waititi was awarded the Toronto International Film Festival`s new Ebert Director Award, with the festival`s co-head Cameron Bailey hailing his "razor-sharp humour, faultless style and boundless generosity."

'Jojo Rabbit' wins audience award at Toronto film festival; next stop, Oscars?

Global icon Priyanka Chopra recently revealed that she moved her husband Nick Jonas to tears shortly before they tied the knot last year.

While attending the Toronto International Film Festival, the 37-year-old star shared that her acting chops made Nick cry, reported People.

The actor revealed that she was shooting for her upcoming Bollywood movie 'The Sky Is Pink' four days before their wedding and that things got emotional one day when the singer visited the sets of the film.

"It's so funny because I was filming this until at least four days before my wedding," Priyanka told People, adding that her fellow producers, as well as director Shonali Bose, were "so accommodating" that they created a "wedding approvals room" for the couple while they were on location in Delhi.

On the last day of shooting before their wedding, Shonali shared that they had invited Nick to set for a champagne and cake celebration.

"But he came a little early and we were out in the dark and she was doing a very, very intense scene and I heard a sniff and I suddenly turned and there was Nick standing next to me and he was just crying to see her be emotional. It was just the sweetest thing," Shonali said.

"She goes, you made your husband cry, this is a great scene. It was really cute," Priyanka added.

Priyanka, who is also co-producing the movie, shared that she has a special relationship with the film, which tells the true story of a couple, played in the movie by her and Farhan Akhtar, who lose their daughter to pulmonary fibrosis, a serious immune disease.

"It's extremely special. Everyone has lost someone in their lives," the 'Quantico' star said.

Priyanka, who lost her father due to cancer six years ago, added that the film looks at how people can choose "to celebrate their lives instead of mourning their deaths."

"I didn't accept my father's death. I went to work four days later, I didn't think about it talk about it," she said.

"When Shonali came to me with this movie, as an actor this is personal. I just knew what she would feel. Even though I'm not a mother and haven't had a child, I just sort of knew," Priyanka added.

'The Sky Is Pink' marks the Bollywood comeback of Priyanka after a hiatus of almost three years.

The film is based on the life of Aisha Chaudhary, who became a motivational speaker after being diagnosed with an immune deficiency order at the age of 13. It also sheds light on the love story of her parents.

It is co-produced by Priyanka, Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur, and will hit the big screens on October 11.

Priyanka last appeared in Hollywood film 'Isn't It Romantic', starring Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth, and Adam DeVine.

'Marriage Story,'&nbsp;the new critically adored divorce drama starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, is a cautionary tale of the sudden violence with which a relationship can be ripped apart, the actor told AFP Sunday.

The movie received rave reviews last week at its world premiere in Venice -- the same week that director Martin Scorsese chose to praise Driver, 35, as "one of the best, if not the best, actors of his generation."

Driver -- best known to wider audiences as the villainous Kylo Ren in 'Star Wars'&nbsp;-- has been widely tipped for Oscar glory for his portrayal of a narcissistic New York theatre director in his latest film.

Speaking exclusively to AFP on the red carpet at Toronto's film festival, Driver said the movie explores how a seemingly stable love can "transition," as his character's wife moves to Los Angeles to pursue the acting career she has long put on hold, taking their child with her.

"If you know someone where you're in the room together and it's second nature, and suddenly that's not there anymore, it can be a violent thing -- internally I mean, not physically violent," said Driver.

"Where you lose love and you don't know how to articulate it."

The former US Marine-turned-TV star ('Girls') has enjoyed a phenomenal rise in recent years, working with directors such as Steven Spielberg ('Lincoln'), the Coen brothers ('Inside Llewyn Davis') and Scorsese ('Silence').

Driver -- whose own parents split when he was a child -- said everyone in the cast of Marriage Story&nbsp;had their own relationship with divorce to draw on, "whether you've been divorced or you're a child of divorce."&nbsp;

'Marriage Story'&nbsp;is his fourth collaboration with arthouse favourite Noah Baumbach, who wrote and directed the movie.

Baumbach came to prominence with 2005's "The Squid and the Whale," the semi-autobiographical tale of two boys dealing with their parents' separation.

He proposed Marriage Story&nbsp;to Johansson during her own divorce from French businessman Romain Dauriac.

"We all take stuff that's personal to us," Baumbach told AFP, adding: "You see the actors doing that -- they're clearly revealing very personal emotional material."

The movie has been praised by Variety as an "exquisite combination of love and heartbreak," and by the Guardian as an "agonized, jagged remake of 'Kramer vs Kramer'."

It will be available on Netflix from December 6, after a month-long US theatrical run that ensures it will be eligible for Academy Award nominations.

The Toronto International Film Festival opened on a decidedly Canadian note on Thursday with a documentary about influential rockers The Band kicking off 10 days of movies vying for attention in the upcoming Hollywood awards season. 
 
'Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band,'&nbsp;tells the story of the Canadian songwriter and guitarist from his early years backing Ronnie Hawkins with future members of The Band and their mid-1960s stint backing Bob Dylan as the folk legend made his controversial transition to electrified rock. 
 
The film follows The Band from the first songs Robertson wrote for Hawkins at 15, through alcoholism, heroin addiction and conflicts en route to becoming one of the most influential bands in rock music history, and its eventual breakup. 
 
"We were of a generation where music was the voice of that generation," Robertson told reporters in Toronto on Thursday. "Everybody gathered around that voice. And so you felt a responsibility to talk about something, to tell a story about something that had a deeper meaning to it." 
 
The first Canadian documentary to open the Toronto festival in its 44-year history, the movie was inspired by Robertson`s 2016 memoir, 'Testimony,'&nbsp;and directed by Toronto-born Daniel Roher. 
 
"What I learned and spent a lot of time focusing on while I was making this film is just this idea that life is what you make of it," Roher said on the red carpet on Thursday. 
 
"You don`t go out and discover who you are, you sort of invent who you are and that`s what Robbie Robertson`s life experience really speaks to."

The documentary is one of 245 films being shown at Toronto, many of whom are already generating Oscar buzz, including the 'The Goldfinch,'&nbsp;'Judy'&nbsp;and 'A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.'

Priyanka Chopra faced a backlash after she said&nbsp;Sikkim is&nbsp;&quot;troubled by insurgency&quot;.

Priyanka was talking to ET Canada about her new film Pahuna: The Little Visitors, which she said is the first movie to come out of the region.

People were quick to point out that Sikkim is&nbsp;actually not troubled by insurgency -- it has no insurgent groups -- and that there have been a number of films from the region.&nbsp;

Priyanka is in Canada for the Toronto International Film Festival.&nbsp;

Her exact words were: &quot;This is a Sikkimese film. It is a small state in the North East of India, who never had a film industry or anyone who made films from there. And this is the first film ever that&#39;s come out of that region because it&#39;s very troubled with insurgency.&quot;
