<p>Three people were injured as a result of the tornadoes. Reports indicate that multiple tornadoes were seen&nbsp;in at least five US states, with the most destructive storm moving from rural areas into the suburbs northwest of Omaha, a city with a population of 485,000.</p>

<p>Additionally, there were 19 severe squalls and 45 hailstorms reported following a major weather event on Friday.</p>

<p>Social media posts showed destroyed homes and toppled trees in rural areas near Omaha due to storms. Roads were blocked by law enforcement. Many houses in Omaha, especially in the Elkhorn area, were damaged, according to Omaha police. Police and firefighters searched door-to-door to help those trapped. Omaha Fire Chief stated that teams focused on the worst-hit area&nbsp;and had a plan to search for anyone trapped.</p>

<p>“We watched it touch down like 200 yards over there, and then we took shelter,” said another eyewitness, Pat Woods, who lives in Elkhorn. “We could hear it coming through. When we came up, our fence was gone, and we looked to the northwest and the whole neighbourhood was gone.”</p>

Only two people with minor injuries were taken for treatment, according to Bonacci. A local TV clip showed a woman being carried out on a stretcher from a damaged home in Blair, a city north of Omaha.</p>

<p>After moving through the airport, the tornado crossed the Missouri River into Iowa, north of Council Bluffs.</p>

<p>Forecasters issued tornado warnings for parts of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas for Saturday, also cautioning about the possibility of large hail and strong winds.</p>

<p>A tornado reached near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Wednesday (July 12) as hundreds of flights were disrupted. Passengers were forced to take shelter.</p>

<p>The National Weather Service in Chicago confirmed the presence of a tornado on the ground around 7 pm local time.</p>

<p>“This tornado has been touching the ground intermittently so far and is moving east. There are additional circulations along the line south of O’Hare. Seek shelter if in the warned area,” it stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>By 8 pm, the weather service stated that the Chicago forecast area was “currently tornado warning free.” It added that the storm was travelling east toward southwest Michigan, and a tornado watch was into effect for regions of Michigan, Indiana and Ohio on Thursday.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Commercial flights grounded</strong></h2>

<p>The Federal Aviation Administration grounded all departures of commercial flights at Midway and O’Hare airports.</p>

<p>As per FlightAware, more than 300 flights in and out of O’Hare and also 32 in and out of Midway were cancelled, with hundreds of people sheltered at O’Hare.</p>

<p>The video from TV stations showed hundreds of people huddled in an O’Hare concourse.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kevin Bargnes, director of communications for O’Hare and Chicago Midway International Airport, told WGN-TV Wednesday night that no damage was reported at either airport.</p>

<p>The National Weather Service reported that roofs blew off and trees were uprooted in the Cook County town and the storm blew out car windows in La Grange. The service stated that roof and tree damage was reported due to several other twisters. The weather service was informed by an unidentified emergency manager that a roof was blown off in the community of Huntley in McHenry County.</p>

<p>In the past, the Chicago metropolitan area witnessed tornadoes and many have hit within the city limits, as per the weather service. Around 92 significant tornadoes were recorded by the weather service between 1855 and 2008 in the Chicago metro area.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The fire service added that with temperatures spiking, the city had opened a cooling centre for residents. Matador City has a population of about 600. It is the main city in Motley County in north Texas.</p>

<p>The United States National Weather Service confirmed the death toll and described the "significant damage" on the west side of Matador where several buildings were heavily damaged or destroyed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The NWS reported at least four tornadoes on Wednesday in Texas. Rain and strong winds also hit some cities in the state. &nbsp;A similar storm hit Perryton killing three people and injuring about 100 last week. Perryton is a town in the Texas Panhandle with a population of about 8,000 people. A storm-chaser drone video showed several buildings, including mobile homes, destroyed or damaged. Trees could be seen uprooted and vehicles overturned.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Storm chaser Brian Emfinger, who shot drone footage over Perryton, said he saw "significant damage", including in the industrial section of town.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Unfortunately northwest of there, there is just mobile home after mobile home after mobile home that is just completely destroyed. There is significant damage," Emfinger told Fox Weather's YouTube channel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Texas and parts of the southern United States have been facing storms and a severe heatwave in recent days, with temperatures topping 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 Celsius).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Several cities have made air-conditioned shelters available. These include Lubbock, and Houston among others.</p>

Tornado hits heat-stricken Texas, kills four

<p>A heartwarming video of a dog rescued by a&nbsp;news crew surfaced on the internet which has won millions of hearts worldwide.</p>

<p>The news crew of ABC spotted the dog trapped underneath the debris of a damaged home in tornado-ravaged Texas.</p>

<p>ABC News sound technician Jim Gower heard the pooch's cries and quickly called for the animal rescue to help. While he waited, he found a nearby shovel and started digging a hole for the animal so that it could escape.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The terrified pup hesitated to exit the hole at first, however, the crew persuaded the pooch out of the wreckage with the help of a Slim Jim meat stick before the animal control arrived.</p>

<p>This came as the crew was setting up the equipment to capture the devastation caused by an EF-1 tornado in Laguna Heights, east of Brownsville, which claimed the life of at least one person.</p>

<p>ABC congratulated their team while social media users thanked the crew members for helping a voiceless animal in need.</p>

<p>"Thank you for rescuing this 4-legged angel," one user commented on the YouTube video.</p>

<p>"Thank you to the beautiful humans who saved him," another added. "True meaning of no one left behind."</p>

<p>According to officials, at least one person lost life after a tornado tore through the unincorporated Gulf Coast community in Texas on Saturday, causing damage to numerous structures and taking down power lines.</p>

<p>As per the New York Times report, a severe thunderstorm spawned a tornado that hit Laguna Heights, near South Padre Island and surrounding communities, such as Port Isabel, around 4 am on Saturday.</p>

<p>Officials confirmed that multiple structures sustained "extensive damage".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Port Isabel Police Chief Robert Lopez said 10 people were injured, with two of them in critical condition, the others had minor cuts and bruises, as per NYT.</p>

<p>Angelica Soria, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Brownsville, Texas, said officials found out in an initial damage assessment that a tornado was on the ground for five minutes. The damage was consistent with a tornado with wind speeds of 86-110 mph.</p>

<p>“The survey team is still going to go through the damage assessment,” Soria said. “I know it wasn’t a very large swath, but I don’t have the exact mileage yet.”</p>

<p>At least 32 people lost their lives after southern and mid-western parts of the United States were torn by a number of tornadoes in recent days, leaving a trail of destruction and debris in its path, as per the officials.</p>

<p>At least eight states were struck by a monster storm over the weekend, leading to at least 50 preliminary reports of tornadoes. The affected states include Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Delaware and Alabama.</p>

<p>In the affected area, which has a population of 85 million people, at least 900,000 places had no power supply after the storms tore through the states on Friday evening.</p>

<p>On Sunday, United States President Joe Biden said that an expedited major disaster declaration has been approved to quickly provide federal assistance to Arkansas.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The president further stated that the federal organisations are closely working with as well as impacted states as the damage due to widespread storms remains under assessment.</p>

<p>Tennessee, which has been hardest hit by the storm, recorded nine deaths due to the weather, as per the Memphis-based news channel WREG. Trees were twisted, homes were flattened into a heap of wooden boards and walls of still-standing structures were ripped by a tornado.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The whole house, you can feel it shaking,” stated Janice Pieterick, whose glass windows and house doors blew out when the tornado swept through Lewis county of the state. “We just all hunkered down," she added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The deaths due to the storm also included at least 17 lives across &nbsp;Mississippi and Alabama in the south, Delaware in the mid-Atlantic, Arkansas, Indiana and Illinois in the midwest. &nbsp;Dozens were also left injured due to the storm.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In Sullivan, Indiana, the storms led to “severe damage” to several houses. Sullivan’s mayor Clint Lamb, on Saturday, wrote on Facebook: “We need all citizens to stay safe and stay put. Multiple houses have experienced severe damage. First responders need clear streets so they can tend to affected areas.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>A state of emergency has been declared by Indiana’s governor Eric Holcomb who has appealed for an “all hands on deck effort” in Sullivan.</p>

In the affected area, which has a population of 85 million people, at least 900,000 places had no power supply after the storms tore through the states on Friday evening. On Sunday, United States President Joe Biden said that an expedited major disaster declaration has been approved to quickly provide federal assistance to Arkansas. The president further stated that the federal organisations are closely working with as well as impacted states as the damage due to widespread storms remains under assessment. Sullivan’s mayor Clint Lamb, on Saturday, wrote on Facebook: “We need all citizens to stay safe and stay put. Multiple houses have experienced severe damage. <p>As the storms engulfed a region of the country where 85 million people live, many lost electricity. Four people died in Wynne, Arkansas, a small town, while three people died in Sullivan, Indiana.</p>

<p>Other fatalities were reported in Alabama, Illinois, Mississippi, and the area of Little Rock.</p>

<p>“I’m sad that my town has been hit so hard,”&nbsp;Heidi Jenkins, a salon owner told AP.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Our school is gone, my church is gone. I’m sad for all the people who lost their homes,” she said.</p>

<p>Recovery efforts were already under way, with workers using chain saws to help remove fallen trees and bulldozers to move debris from destroyed buildings. Power was restored by utility vehicles. The volunteer groups convened to make plans for the day.</p>

<p>One person was killed and 28 people were injured, five of them seriously, when a tornado in Belvidere, Illinois, destroyed the Apollo Theatre's roof as 260 people were watching a heavy metal concert indoors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gabrielle Lewellyn, who had just entered the theatre, told WTVO-TV that others hurried to lift the part of the ceiling that had collapsed and drag people out from under&nbsp;the debris.</p>

<p>“They dragged someone out from the rubble, and I sat with him and I held his hand and I was (telling him) ‘It’s going to be OK.’ I didn’t really know much else what to do,” Lewellyn told AP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr tweeted, "At this time, we know of 24 people who have been hospitalised at Little Rock hospitals and we are not aware of any fatalities in Little Rock at this time. Property damage is extensive and we are still responding."</p>

<p>He said a temporary emergency shelter is being set up for any displaced individuals. Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders declared a state of emergency. The National Guard has also been deployed because of the significant damage in the central part of the city.</p>

<p>The tornado in Little Rock&nbsp;tore through residential areas. It&nbsp;demolished many&nbsp;homes and apartment complexes and&nbsp;flipped&nbsp;vehicles. Considering the severity,&nbsp;search and rescue operations have been set off. According to reports, some of the individuals are critically&nbsp;injured.</p>

Extreme weather events continue to hit the United States. Different states in the country were hit by tornadoes while a third state had to deal with severe storms, at least three people have died in Arkansas as powerful tornado plowed through the state.

<p>As the thunder roared outside and the lights inside Chuck's Dairy Bar began to blink, owner Tracy Harden realized the tornado conditions forecasted for her small Mississippi town Friday night were far more severe than she realized.</p>

<p>"Cooler!" yelled out Harden, and she, her husband and their employees scrambled into a giant gray metal box -- normally used to keep the restaurant's food refrigerated, but which that night saved nine lives in the shattered small town of Rolling Fork.</p>

<p>The tornado cut a trail of havoc more than 100 miles (160 kilometres) long across the southern US state, leaving 25 people dead and devastating damage in its wake.</p>

<p>As evening approached, it had been a little windy and rainy, Harden recounted, surveying the land where her business used to sit.</p>

<p>But the weather warning sirens hadn't sounded, so "we really just didn't worry about this much at all," she told AFP.</p>

<p>Barbara Nell McReynolds-Pinkins -- the cook at Chuck's, affectionately known as Miss P -- had just finished preparing an order of hamburger steak with fries and a salad when everything seemed to change.</p>

<p>"It was so scary," the 52-year-old said, still trembling as she remembered the howling wind, flashes of lightening and pouring rain.</p>

<p>As the storm intensified, 48-year-old Harden said relatives began sending her messages, warning of an especially violent tornado headed her way.</p>

<p>"The lights flickered, and I screamed 'Cooler!'," Harden said. But before her husband was even able to reach the refrigerator's door handle, the whole place was plunged into darkness.</p>

<h2><strong>Ferocious wind</strong></h2>

<p>Harden's husband began to shove everyone inside the giant container.</p>

<p>"And I was calling everybody's name to make sure we had everyone as they were coming to me," Harden said, unable to contain her emotion as she remembered the scene.</p>

<p>The wind was so strong her husband almost lost his grip on the door, which they had to keep closed tight enough to protect them from the storm, but not so tight the group would get locked inside.</p>

<p>Then, "He said, 'I see the sky,'" Harden recalled. "That meant that our roof was gone."</p>

<p>For a long while -- Harden and McReynolds-Pinkins could not estimate how long -- the nine stayed huddled together inside the cooler, bumping up against the metal shelves stocked with milk and meat products.</p>

<p>The ferocious winds -- up to 200 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service -- buffeted and battered the cooler, the nine restaurant workers still inside.</p>

<p>"We're screaming and crying and praying, and then all of a sudden it just stops," Harden said.</p>

<p>But when her husband tried to open the door, it seemed stuck. They called 911 and started to scream, hoping someone would hear them.</p>

<p>That's when the customer who had ordered Miss P's steak came back.</p>

<h2><strong>'God saved us'</strong></h2>

<p>The customer, who had broken his arm as the tornado raged overhead, "somehow cleared the debris from at the door," Harden said. "He got it open, and he got us all out."</p>

<p>The group was rescued, but the world outside the cooler was destroyed.</p>

<p>Buildings were smashed, some totally flattened. Two motels next door, also owned by Harden and her husband, were gone.</p>

<p>"God saved us" through Tracy Harden, according to McReynolds-Pinkins.</p>

<p>"I've always heard if you're in a restaurant and there's a cooler, get in the cooler, and that just came to my mind," Harden said, tears streaming down her cheeks as she explained how she knew where to take shelter.</p>

<p>For Harden, it's still too soon to think about insurance or plans for rebuilding -- right now, that is "the least of our worries," she said, more focused on the human impact of this disaster.</p>

<p>But "we will be back," she promised, in the same spot as before.</p>

<p>And what of the now dented cooler?</p>

<p>"We're gonna bronze it. We're gonna make it beautiful!" she said, laughing.</p>

Governor Reeves said that many parts of the state are facing significant risks. Hundreds of citizens were displaced due to the tornadoes which tore through Alabama and Mississippi in the United States on Friday night.</p>

<p>The mayor of one of the worst-hit towns said that some of his personal friends were also killed in the natural disaster.</p>

<p>The tornado that came on Friday was the deadliest among all the tornadoes which have hit Mississippi in more than 10 years. Around 25 people lost their lives in the state while one person was confirmed dead in the neighbouring state of Alabama.</p>

<p>Trucks were overturned into houses, trees were uprooted and power lines were broken by the tornado which was classified as “violent”.</p>

A state of emergency was declared by United States President Joe Biden and federal resources were deployed to accelerate the work of rescue and response in some of the towns which were worst hit.</p>

<p>Crews have been working to remove the fallen trees which have pinned down the power lines because of which thousands have been living in darkness since Friday. A few stations have been established outside some buildings which are standing partially for the survivors to collect sandwiches and water.</p>

<p>However, as local communities are working towards providing a swift response, warnings have been issued for the severe storm ahead.</p>

<p>Addressing a press conference held in Rolling Fork, Governor Reeves said, "What we've seen, much like the storm that occurred Friday night, is in the 24-36 hours that are leading up to this afternoon, it appears that the risks seem to be getting worse and worse, not better.”</p>
