Indian TV channels and newspapers are gushing this week over Apple Inc's CEO Tim Cook's high-profile visit, marked by the inauguration (finally) of company-owned stores in Delhi and Mumbai in a country where its products, notably the iPhone, have been selling for billions of dollars through resellers.&nbsp;

My memories went back about 25 years ago, when I wrote a story on the visit of Bill Gates, then CEO of software giant Microsoft. The first line of my story was: Is he coming here to buy, or is he coming here to sell?&nbsp;

It is time now for me to dust up that line again, this time for Cook, whose visit was preceded by a full-length Bollywood movie, Fursat, shot on an iPhone 14 Pro. This has definitely been a visit whose design matched the famous products made by Apple. A vada-pav (potato dumpling sandwich famous at&nbsp;Mumbai's street stalls) outing with the somewhat ageing movie star Madhuri Dixit, a badminton star in attendance, a cult evening out with a classical music-fused concert on an iPad....you get the picture.&nbsp;

Look beyond the glitz now to ask why there should be so much excitement about somebody who is coming to sell products. I know that consumerism is a religion for Apple fans. The giant is said to command a 60% market share in the higher end of India's smartphone market though the overall market share for the country in its global scheme of things is just about 2%. But, as Cook himself spoke of exciting years ahead for India, his eye was on the main chance: wooing an emerging market of youth-rich 1.4 billion people with increasing purchasing power.&nbsp;

That is a small number for Apple now, but the growth rate indicates that juicy times lie ahead for Tim Cook's army. Twentysomething Indians buying $1,000 iPhones is now quite common in urban India, and one marketing wizard expects an "Indianisation of Apple" that might mean gold-coloured iPhones for a jewellery-loving tribe. 
 
India has come a long way from 1990 when I covered the entry of PepsiCo, which was obliged to buy tomatoes from Punjab farmers and earn foreign exchange in return for selling sugared water to Indians. "Sugared water" is incidentally what Apple founder Steve Jobs called cola when he wooed Pepsi's John Sculley to join his computer company to drive marketing in Apple's history-making epoch.&nbsp;

While Gates came calling a few years later, I was not sure if Microsoft was focused on selling its then monopolistic Windows software to Indians or had something that would actually benefit India's economy by way of exports. Things have changed now. Microsoft has software development facilities in India that contribute significantly to its progress and that of India.

As for Apple, the real focus of policy-makers and serious-minded Indians is whether it can help India become a powerhouse as part of a so-called "China plus one" strategy to diversify its manufacturing. In fact, Apple is now said to produce about 7 per cent of its iPhones in India through partnerships with companies like Foxconn and Pegatron, up from only one per cent two years ago. Most of that is by way of assembling components.

Last financial year, Apple is reported to have exported $5 billion worth of iPhones from India (out of a total $7 billion in Indian revenues) up four times on the year. It is now expected to make 25 per cent of its iPhones in India over the next two years. Foxconn has been in the news for planning to invest $700 million to build a 100,000-job factory in southern Karnataka, which is only a small beginning in an anticipated manufacturing boost.&nbsp;

That is indeed good news for those who want to see India as a stronger economy from a producer's point of view that creates jobs and wealth, and not just as a consumer market.&nbsp;

Cook also said during his visit that it has a strong developer community in India to build software around its iOS platform and an estimated 1 million jobs have been created in India, thanks to Apple's app design centre in Bangalore launched in 2017.&nbsp;

Does that make India significant enough in a manner that India gains from Apple as much if not more than Apple gains from Indian consumers? Perhaps, if Bollywood, Kollywood, and the other woods of Indian cinema turn iPhones into global content export engines the way Indian software companies turned personal computers into forex-earning ninjas to morph India's sagging economy.&nbsp;

To be fair to Apple, it is also a quiet importer of software services from India. Among its vendors are Wipro, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra and a lesser-known company, Exilant (since acquired by Quest Global). These companies have been providing confidentially to Apple a range of services in application development, data warehousing, business intelligence, product lifecycle management, channel sales and customer care.&nbsp;

No one talks about it, but things leak out of former or anonymous employees on sites such as salary tracker Glassdoor. One geek says of working on Apple projects: "Work was really great, you get a lot to learn in very short time. A lot of responsibilities and stringent timelines, definitely make you a good developer if you are willing to put in the effort...Real fun-loving team that will make you enjoy your office experience."&nbsp;

On balance, I find Apple's engagement encouraging for India's economy but it is difficult to get all the required numbers. I would not jump to conclusions on how much Apple will help in making Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dreams of India becoming a global manufacturing hub. A lot depends on cost efficiency, infrastructure and tax incentives that Apple or its partners perceive.&nbsp;

When it comes to the crunch, Apple is a hard-bargaining company that seeks value for money in its investments, which is what has made its cash and similar reserves swell to $51 billion and assets to cross $346 billion.

Apple’s much-awaited iPhone 14 series was launched officially on Wednesday, with minor, yet most recognisable, tweaks to the Pro and Pro Max versions.

As rumoured widely before the official launch, Apple has ditched its mini version and started with the regular iPhone 14.

Apples has launched the phone in four models— the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

While iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro have smaller screens (6.1 inches and 6.7 inches), the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max are the ones which have bigger screens.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has called the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max the “most innovative pro lineup yet.”

There is a massive hardware difference between the Pro and non-pro versions of the iPhone.

While iPhone 14 and 14 Pro come with last year's Apple A15 Bionic SoCs, the Pro models are powered by the latest Apple Bionic A16 SoC.

The latest smartphones come with e-sim activation without Wi-Fi in the US. For the first time, the iPhone models in the US will not have a SIM tray.

But, among the most notable feature in all the models of iPhone is the satellite emergency communication technology that can be used to send SOS message over satellite.

The feature will start in US and Canada, and it will be free with iPhone 14 for two years.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus prices and specifications

Pricing for the iPhone 14 starts at $799 for 128GB version, just like iPhone 13, and will be available on September 16.

The iPhone 14 Plus, which also comes with 128GB base storage, starts at $899 and is available on October 7. Pre-orders for both models will open on September 9 in US.

In India, the iPhone 14 price in India is set at Rs. 79,900, while the iPhone 14 Plus will be starting at Rs. 89,900.

iPhone 14 features a flat-edge aerospace-grade aluminium frame, with Ceramic Shield material on the front, and IP68 dust and water resistance rating — just like the previous generation.

The phone sports a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR&nbsp;OLED display which is said to be better in terms of brightness and colour reproduction as compared to last year's handset. Apple said it offers 1200nits peak brightness and support for Dolby Vision.

The features of iPhone 14 Plus are similar to the iPhone 14 except the bigger screen size and battery backup.

The handset has 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display and Apple claims that the Plus version has “the best battery life ever in an iPhone”.&nbsp;

Just like the iPhone 13 series, Apple continues to offer the Face ID technology as the only biometric security option to unlock the phone.

For cameras, both devices feature an updated 12-megapixel main lens, with a faster aperture that should lead to better motion capture.

A new video stabilization mode dubbed "action mode," is designed to keep your content smooth even when recording video while moving around.

Both handsets have a 12-megapixel sensor in the front camera which can produce crisp images in low light.

Prices and features of iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max

The iPhone 14 Pro will start at $999, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at $1,099. Both will be available for pre-order on September 9 and available in stores on September 16.

In India, the price of iPhone 14 Pro is set at Rs. 1,29,900, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max will cost Rs. 1,39,900.

It will come out in four colour options—Deep Purple, Gold, Silver, and&nbsp;Space Black colour options.

With regards to hardware, Pro models surgical-grade stainless steel which is said to be abrasion and corrosion-resistant. &nbsp;Both handsets come with Ceramic Shield front cover touted to be tougher than any smartphone glass.

The iPhone 14 Pro comes with a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR Always-On OLED display with Apple's ProMotion refresh rate feature.

Moreover, the Pro models can scale as low as 1Hz in order to provide a combination of smoother motion and power-efficient system.

But the most poignant difference between the pro and non-pro models is the hole-punch in the screen.

Apple has introduced a pill-shaped hole-punch cutout in place of the famous trend-setting notch.

The third is a 12-megapixel&nbsp;sensor with f/2.2 aperture ultra-wide angle lens that has 120-degree field-of-view.

The quad-pixel sensor combines four pixels into one pixel for maximum light intake. It also enables a 2x Telephoto option and the new machine learning model allows the iPhone 14 Pro to shoot ProRAW.&nbsp;

Both handsets also have Photonic Engine which is said to offer a better low-light performance — up to 2x on the main camera, up to 3x on the ultra wide camera, up to 2x on the telephoto camera, and up to 2x on the TrueDepth front camera that has&nbsp;12-megapixel sensor and f/1.9 aperture lens.

Report says Apple's quest to produce a viable self-driving car stuck in low gear

Nearly 15 years after the iPhone sparked the smartphone revolution, Apple is assembling the pieces for what it hopes will become its next business-altering device: a headset that blends the digital world with the real one.

The planned headset will thrust Apple into an emerging competition to define the future of mixed reality. Microsoft, Google and Facebook’s parent company, Meta, are in various stages of developing software and hardware to create environments where 3D digital images and the physical world coexist.

Last year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg dropped Facebook as his company’s name and committed it to building a concept known as the metaverse, where the online, virtual and real worlds coalesce in a new universe. Apple starts connecting the dots for its next big thing

Apple is internally testing new models of the MacBook series with next-generation M2 chips as per a report published in Bloomberg.

The company's developer logs show that the US tech giant is using third-party apps for its testing.

For about 40 students who hailed from very diverse backgrounds, belonged to different parts of Tamil Nadu, in Southern India, it was their first-ever photography workshop.

Conducted amid the pandemic, the training in mobile photography was imparted both in online and offline mode, depending on where the students were from. 'Composition, framing, lighting, exposure' were some of the finer aspects of photography that the school students, aged between 13 and 19 had learnt. At the end of their training, their work was even framed and exhibited at the iconic Egmore museum in Chennai.

The frames on display showed pets, birds, architectural landmarks, portraits, patterns and what not! But the feelings of the first-time exhibitors were even more vivid.

"This is the first time I've attended a Photography session and I'm so excited that our work is being displayed at the museum" said S. Asreen Banu, a student from Chennai. For Aishwarya, a speech-impaired student from Chennai, photography is more than a mere hobby, it’s a means of expressing herself.

"I'm very happy that my parents and other visitors will be able to see the pictures that we have clicked" she said.

"We are a non-profit foundation that has been teaching photography since 2018. We work a lot with iPhones and we lent these phones to the students for this project (to ensure everyone had access to the same gear). They were asked to click everything that was a quintessential representation of Tamil Nadu, so that we could exhibit the best work in as large as 4feet by 8 feet prints" Varun Gupta, CO-Founder, Chennai Photo Biennale Foundation told WION.

How a group of student photographers from India caught Apple CEO Tim Cook's attention

Apple has obtained a temporary restraining order against a 45-year-old woman claiming to be wife of company CEO Tim Cook. Apple says that the woman has been stalking and harassing Cook since 2020. The company&nbsp;applied for the restraining order on Thursday last week and got it on Friday.

As per Apple's application, the woman has been claiming to be Cook's wife and even claiming that he had twin children with him. The company further said that between October 2020 and November 2020, she mailed Cook 200 times. The tone gradually became 'threatening'. In some of these mails, the woman reportedly sent pics of a handgun and ammunition she claimed she purchased.

The stalking behaviour continued in the next year. In 2021, the woman drove to Cook's home in Paulo Alto in California and asked to speak with him. Local police responded to this. They did not find any weapon with the woman.

Apple says that the woman opened fraudulent corporations listing Tim Cook as director and even entered Cook's home address as contact address for the company.

A hearing in this entire matter has been scheduled on March 29. The restraining order expires on this day.

This is not the first time Apple has applied for a restraining order. The company was granted it in early 2020 against another person who the company said stalked Tim Cook.

An Apple-branded set of four wheels to “improve mobility” for the Mac Pro, the company’s most expensive desktop computer, is priced at $699, for instance.

But the Polishing Cloth stands out because it is far more expensive than widely available alternatives. MagicFiber, a popular brand of microfiber cloth that uses ultrafine fibers to clean glass without scratching the surface, offers a pack of six for $9 on Amazon.

“You have to give them credit for the chutzpah to charge $19,” Walter Gonzalez, president and founder of Goja, the parent company of MagicFiber, said of Apple.

Even so, the price has not stopped Apple fans from rushing to be early adopters.

Albert Lee, 47, a director at a consulting firm in New York, said he bought the cloth at an Apple Store on Tuesday. He was picking up a new MacBook Pro, a high-end laptop computer, when the Polishing Cloth caught his eye. He bought four and then posted a picture of his bounty on Twitter.

“It’s just a point of sheer excess,” Lee acknowledged, calling the splurge an impulse buy of “the most elite cloth.” He added: “I just spent $4,000 on a laptop. What’s another $19?”

On Twitter, the cloth has been fodder for jokes and even a parody account since Apple quietly put it on sale on Oct. 18. Later that week, when Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, posted a tweet promoting a new retail store in Turkey, Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, needled him by replying, “Come see the Apple Cloth” with a trademark logo.

(Musk’s company is also not shy about testing the strength of its brand and the fealty of its customers. Tesla’s website offers a company-branded “handblown” decanter for $150 and a $60 umbrella with an “ergonomically designed handle.”)

Patrick Tomasso, 32, a Toronto-based YouTube creator of tech and photography-related videos, said he also thought that Apple charging 25 Canadian dollars for the cloth was “ridiculous” since many tech products include a free microfiber cloth.

But when he noticed that it was not shipping until next year, he said he got a “bit of FOMO” — fear of missing out — and quickly snapped up two sheets from a nearby Apple store. As a spoof, Tomasso then made an “unboxing video” of himself opening the “most revolutionary Apple product.”

In the video, he noticed that the Polishing Cloth’s color looked different in person — more gray, less white — and that there was a big crease in the middle that might need to be ironed.

His assessment? It’s a nice cloth worth maybe $5.

Apple's most back-ordered new product is not what you expect

Let’s talk about buying an iPhone for $1,000. Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, once compared this eye-popping price tag to buying a cup of coffee a day over a year. No big deal, right?

But financial advisers see this differently. By some estimates, an investment of $1,000 in a retirement account today would balloon to about $17,000 in 30 years.

In other words, $700 to $1,000 — the price range of modern smartphones — is a big purchase. Fewer than half of American adults have enough savings set aside to cover three months of emergency expenses, according to the Pew Research Center. Yet 1 in 5 people surveyed by financial website WalletHub thought a new phone was worth going into debt for.

Tech companies fairly argue that our smartphones are our most powerful tools for work and play and thus worth every penny. But they also play numbers games to downplay the costs of a new phone. Samsung, for example, has said the price of its new Galaxy phone is $200 — but that’s only if you trade in a year-old phone for credit toward the new one. The true price is $800.

So it’s worth looking at phone upgrades in a different light to weigh their financial impact. That can help us make well-considered decisions so that the move isn’t automatic.

The irony of Cook’s coffee analogy isn’t lost on Suze Orman, the financial adviser who once famously equated people’s coffee habits to “peeing $1 million down the drain.” The seemingly small amount of money that people mindlessly spend on java — and now phone upgrades — could be a path to poverty, she said.

“Do you need a new one every single year?” asked Orman, who hosts the “Women and Money” podcast. “Absolutely not. It’s just a ridiculous waste of money.”

Apple and Samsung didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

So what’s the true cost of a phone upgrade? Let’s look at the math.

Flipsy, a company that buys and sells used phones, published an analysis this year arguing that it’s smart to buy a new iPhone every year. Here was its breakdown:

— The iPhone 12 cost $799 last year. It’s now worth $460 if you trade it in to defray the cost of a new phone. The newest iPhones, the iPhone 13, also cost $799. So if you traded in your iPhone 12, the iPhone 13 would cost $339. At this rate, if you bought an iPhone every year for four years, including the original $799, the net total would be $1,816.

— If you waited three years for the iPhone 15, your iPhone 12’s trade-in value would diminish to about $200. Trade it in and the cost of the iPhone 13 would be $599. Add in the original $799 and your net cost over four years would be $1,398.

In summary, upgrading annually over three years costs $418 more, or roughly $12 a month, compared with upgrading every three years, Flipsy said.

Framed this way, it may sound like a bargain to get a new phone every year as opposed to every few years. But plugging these numbers into a financial calculator tells a different story.

If you put $12 a month into a retirement account, like a Roth IRA that has an average annual rate of return of 10%, that amount would turn into $25,161 over 30 years, according to Orman’s savings calculator.

Orman compared the trade-in dilemma to buying cars. Car manufacturers could argue that the diminishing trade-in value of your car should compel you to buy a new one regularly — but don’t fall for it.

“I love my car, and I don’t care that the value goes down,” she said. “Think of the 11 years I have saved money not having car payments, or trading it in and spending more money to get another car.”

So what about those cups of coffee? On average, we pay $3 a cup, so $1,000 could buy roughly 333 cups. But naturally, making your own coffee is much cheaper.

I plugged some numbers into a coffee calculator designed by Bone Fide Wealth, a financial planning service. A $16 bag of beans from Peet’s Coffee at Costco could brew about 41 cups of coffee for 39 cents each. So a $1,000 iPhone is worth about 2,500 cups of coffee. Not as compelling.

Doug Boneparth, the president of Bone Fide Wealth, made a counterpoint. South&nbsp;Korean MPs on Tuesday passed a law banning Apple and Google from forcing app developers to use the tech giants' payment systems, effectively declaring their lucrative App Store and Play Store monopolies illegal.

The bill was approved by 180 votes to nil in the National Assembly, making&nbsp;South&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;the first major economy to pass legislation on the issue, in a move that could set a precedent for other jurisdictions around the world.

In the United States, three senators this month introduced a bill to loosen the tech firms' grip on their stores, while in Europe lawmakers are debating legislation that could force Apple to bring in alternatives to the App Store.

The&nbsp;South&nbsp;Korean measure comes as Apple and Google face global criticism for charging up to 30 percent commission on app sales and requiring their own payment systems be used that collect a share of the transactions.

The Korean law,&nbsp;locally dubbed the "Anti-Google&nbsp;Law,"&nbsp;will offer users a choice of app payment providers, allowing them to bypass charges set by the store owner.

"This law will certainly set a precedent for other countries, as well as app developers and content creators worldwide," Kang Ki-hwan at the&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;Mobile Internet Business Association told AFP.

It is expected to come into force in September, according to reports.

Later this year Google plans to enforce globally a requirement for developers to use its payment system,&nbsp;with its 30 percent commission above a certain threshold,&nbsp;for in-app purchases.

In&nbsp;South&nbsp;Korea, it is also planning to charge commission on all content payments from October, ending an exemption where commissions were only payable for online games.

'Fair compensation'&nbsp;

That announcement prompted an angry response from&nbsp;South&nbsp;Korean artists and creators, with web fiction writers and webtoon artists accusing Google of "power abuse" and campaigning fiercely for the new law.

"Without this law, our working environment,&nbsp;where creators are guaranteed of full rewards for their efforts,&nbsp;would've been destroyed," Seo Bum-gang, a webtoon artist who heads the&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;Webtoon Industry Association, told AFP.

"We need this law to protect the diversity of our industry, where artists and creators of all economic backgrounds can share their content without having to worry about the commission fees."

Apple&nbsp;and&nbsp;Google&nbsp;have maintained that commissions charged are standard in the industry and fair compensation for building safe marketplaces where developers can reach people around the world.

Ahead of the debate, Apple told AFP that it would put digital purchasers at risk of fraud, undermine their privacy protection and render parental controls less effective.

"We believe user trust in App Store purchases will decrease as a result of this proposal --leading to fewer opportunities for the over 482,000 registered developers in&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;who have earned more than 8.55 trillion won to date with Apple," it said in a statement.

South Korea bans Apple and Google payment monopolies in world first

Apple chief executive Tim Cook has received a bonus of some $750 million, reflecting his performance at the US technology giant in his 10 years at the helm, a regulatory filing showed.

The Thursday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission showed Cook's bonus was granted in some five million Apple shares, which were subsequently cashed out.

A team at&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;devoted to reviewing whether apps submitted to its App Store conform to its policies has approved a modified version of Parler, which had become popular with conservatives before it was booted off online marketplaces.

The news came from a copy of a letter from&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;posted on Twitter by US Representative Ken Buck of Colorado.

"Parler has proposed updates to its app and the app's content moderation practices," read the letter signed by&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;senior director of government affairs in the Americas Timothy Powderly.

"Its proposed updated app will be approved for reinstallment in the App Store."

Powderly noted in the letter that&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;stood by its independent decision to remove Parler from the App Store in the aftermath of the January 6 attack on the US Capitol by supporters of former president Donald Trump.

Buck said in his tweet that Parler's return to the App Store is "a huge win for free speech."
