Called the ‘The NyQuil chicken or “Sleepy Chicken” challenge, people fry two chicken breasts using NyQuil—a cold and flu medicine. &nbsp;

The video went viral in January this year, and according to US Today, as of Tuesday, over 1.3 million videos have been posted on TikTok with the&nbsp;#sleepychicken tag.&nbsp;

"The challenge sounds silly and unappetizing — and it is. But it could also be very unsafe. Boiling a medication can make it much more concentrated and change its properties in other ways," the FDA said.&nbsp;

“Even if you don’t eat the chicken, inhaling the medication’s vapours while cooking could cause high levels of the drugs to enter your body. It could also hurt your lungs," it added.&nbsp;

The agency cautioned that the process of cooking with this type of medicine-laced concoction can be dangerous, even if it is done for entertainment purposes.&nbsp;

"Put simply: Someone could take a dangerously high amount of the cough and cold medicine without even realizing it," the agency said.&nbsp;

Notably, this is not the first weird or potentially life-threatening TikTok challenge that has become viral in recent years.&nbsp;

In 2020, another&nbsp;TikTok challenge dared people to take large doses of allergy medicine diphenhydramine — one of the brands is Benadryl — to get high and induce hallucinations.&nbsp;

There was also this challenge that encouraged people to lick surfaces during the pandemic, and the Blackout challenge where people choke themselves until they become unconscious. It had resulted in multiple deaths.&nbsp;

She later learned that her son lost his life while trying the “blackout challenge”, a viral trend that is believed to have caused the brain injury which led to the death of 12-year-old Archie Battersbee last month.

Under this challenge, kids film themselves holding their breath until they fall unconscious due to lack of oxygen before sharing the videos on social media.

TikTok has been facing the ire following several deaths, with some parents even suing the video-sharing app over claims that the platform’s algorithm promotes “blackout challenge” videos.

After learning that her son had died due to the dreaded challenge, Keating told Scotland’s Daily Record&nbsp;that one of her son’s friends informed her of Leon taking the challenge on Facetime.

“One of Leon’s friends told me he had been doing the challenge on Facetime with them after seeing it on TikTok,” she told the paper.

“My Leon thought he would be the one to try it first. Him and his friends probably thought it was a laugh and a joke. I went on TikTok and wrote out words similar to blackout challenge. The amount of video results that came up on it is ridiculous,” she added.

Leon’s death came just weeks after Archie Battersbee was taken off life support on August 16. The 12-year-old was also a victim of the “blackout challenge”.

Responding to the deaths, TikTok recently urged users to flag&nbsp;the challenge by clicking the symbol that says “Report.”

However, the app is reportedly still loaded with footage depicting the potentially fatal challenge, according to the New York Post.

Any link that is opened in the in-app browser will be vulnerable to a data breach as the applications are capable of storing the information typed in by the user. As a result, both TikTok and Meta applications can easily store credit card information, shipping address and other related details.

TikTok has come under a lot of fire lately due to data breach concerns as Federal Communications Commission commissioner Brendan Carr called on Apple and Google to remove it from app stores.

“TikTok collects everything from search and browsing histories to keystroke patterns and biometric identifiers, including faceprints… and voiceprints,” Carr wrote in an open letter according to New York Post.

Carr called it a “sophisticated surveillance tool that harvests extensive amounts of personal and sensitive data” and warned that this can turn into a serious threat to the national security.

In the research paper, Krause explained that TikTok “subscribes to every keystroke (text inputs) happening on third party websites rendered inside the TikTok app.” On the other hand, Instagram is able to access user information by “injecting a JavaScript code into every website shown”.

TikTok accused Krause of making incorrect statements about the company. “The researcher specifically says the JavaScript code does not mean our app is doing anything malicious, and admits they have no way to know what kind of data our in-app browser collects,” the spokesperson said.

“The account was an attempt to engage with younger audiences, who are not always active on our existing social media platforms, regarding the work of parliament. However, in light of your feedback and concerns expressed to us, we have decided that the account should be closed with immediate effect.”

Tory leaders Tom Tugendhat and Iain Duncan Smith were the ones who first raised the issue by writing a letter demanding the account be taken down. Soon, other Tory leaders became signatories to the letter. It is pertinent to note that both the conservative leaders have been banned from entering China for their vehement criticism of China's treatment of Uyghur Muslims.&nbsp;

Speakers close UK parliament's TikTok account after Tory leaders protested app's Chinese links

ByteDance-owned TikTok is now facing a backlash in New Zealand. Reportedly, the Kiwi lawmakers have been warned by House speaker Trevor Mallard to not use the TikTok app on their parliamentary phones and devices as it poses a security risk.

Local media reports stated that the incident took place last week. Ahmed’s family had called the Alpharetta police after he was found missing from his home. They asked for a welfare check at Khan’s apartment, where they thought he might be.&nbsp;

The police then arrived at 200 block of E. Ohio street, where thery found a woman and a man with gunshot wounds to their heads inside a residence, Chicago police told ABC News in a statement

Khan was pronounced dead on the spot, whereas Ahmed was taken to Northwestern Hospital where he was declared dead as well. Police said they have recovered a weapon from the scene.

Facebook’s parent company Meta Platforms reports revenue drop for the first time ever

Amid backlash over Instagram’s decision to make a series of changes to its app so that it looks more like its rival TikTok, the social network site’s CEO defended the move saying that the platform will continue to focus more on “reels” without compromising support for the photo features.

On Friday, Meta-owned made sweeping changes to its app that would let people make TikTok-style “reels” videos, and heavy promotion of the TikTok-style “remix” feature, and algorithm changes that are more heavily tilted towards suggested videos.

But the users were not pleased with the app’s apparent attempt to mimic TikTok. Even a petition was launched under the name of “Make Instagram Instagram Again.”

Addressing the concerns regarding the user interface changes, Instagram head Adam Mosseri posted a video on Tuesday morning, saying that he had heard concerns about a number of changes on the app, including the platform "shifting to video" over photos.

"We're going to continue to support photos. It's part of our heritage," he said.

According to the Supreme People's court order, Tang Lu was executed on Saturday after being given the death penalty for the intentional homicide in October 2021 that had drawn national outrage.

The Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture Intermediate People's Court said in a short statement that the crime was extremely cruel, and Lu deserved the most severe punishment, reports Mirror newspaper.

Lu and his wife Lamu were separated in June 2020 after eleven years together. Both worked as influencers on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok.

According to a previous statement from the court, Lu was not willing to get a divorce and repeatedly tried to restore the marriage, but Lamu rejected the idea.

In September 2020, a dejected Lu went to his ex-wife’s house, doused her with petrol and set her on fire while she was livestreaming on Douyin. The 30-year-old woman, who was known online as Lhamo, died of injuries a few weeks later.

Lamu had around 75,000 followers on Douyin where she used to share her life, showing off the Sichuan countryside. She was ethnically Tibetan and often wore traditional Tibetan clothing in the videos.

Lamu’s case drew national headlines a day after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s speech at a UN conference where he talked about the protection of women’s rights and interests saying that it “must become a national commitment”.

Her case then stirred heated discussions over domestic violence.

Hashtags including #LhamoAct, calling for laws allowing victims of abuse an automatic divorce, spread across the internet.

The social media star’s sister had told the Paper, an official media outlet based in Shanghai, that her sister faced domestic abuse for years and that is why she decided to divorce him.

The woman, who has been identified by her surname Zhang, shared a video on TikTok&nbsp;on July 13. “I am officially a grandmother now. I was born in the 1980s and have not had the time to be filial to my parents or to perform my motherly duties, and I am now a grandmother," she said, South China Morning Post reports.

“I should be with my seven-year-old son right now helping him get to sleep, but instead I’m taking care of my newborn grandson.”

The video went viral and garnered more than 240 million views on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like platform. It also triggered a massive debate online in China about whether getting married and having children at a young age should be encouraged.

They were a fair number of supporters and detractors who reacted to the video.

While some supported the young grandmother saying that the family completed their “life tasks” early.

“She is truly a life winner who completed her life tasks ahead of schedule, and she still looks young for a grandmother,” one person was quoted as saying.

While others highlighted the demerits of early marriage saying that it could cause harm to families and society.

“Teenage parents can hardly bear the responsibility of raising a child,” one person said. “It is easy to predict that the family will be unable to obtain a proper education, trapping them in a cycle of poverty.”

After her video drew the attention of everyone, Zhang responded on Toutiao, a Chinese news and information content platform on July 20, saying, “It’s not something to be proud of.”

“I dropped out of school and left home at a young age to work in big cities, and I married my husband (father of both sons) at 19,” Zhang wrote. “I had planned to send my son to get a good education, but he ignored our advice and chose another path in life.”

Zhang, however, claims that she is not the only one in her hometown, Nanyang, who has grandkids at such an early age.

“People who dropped out of school early commonly marry young, but they may not post videos to tell their stories,” Zhang was quoted as saying.

Currently, the minimum age for marriage is 22 for men and 20 for women.

Reportedly, the disruption in the supply chain, labour shortage and record inflation has forced advertisers to pull the plug on their advertising budgets. This has directly affected Snap Inc's revenue according to the company officials.&nbsp;

Now only prosecutors can file lawsuits against social media companies and they will be liable for damages of up to $250,000 per violation for using features they know can cause children to become addicted.

CalMatters reported that the legislation, which was introduced by Republican Assembly member Jordan Cunningham, was amended last month.

According to Cunningham, the change has been made to avoid opening ''the floodgates to frivolous claims.''

If the companies conduct quarterly audits of their features and remove any harmful products within 30 days of learning they cause children to become addicted, the bill would exempt social media companies from these lawsuits.

Saying the legislation would give social media companies an incentive to police themselves to avoid penalties, Cunningham highlighted that most other products are covered under consumer protection laws that allow people to sue companies for selling products they know to be dangerous.
