After Tesla chief Elon Musk said he is "working through a lot of challenges with the government" in India, India's minister Krishna Pal Gujjar told Parliament that it won't be granting subsidies or relaxation in taxes to the company since it has no plans to setup its manufacturing unit in the country.

"Why should we favour a company which creates jobs in China and mints profit from our markets? Our Prime Minister has a vision for all such foreign companies, if you want to sell your product in our country, then manufacture them here," India's minister of state for heavy industries Krishna Pal Gujjar told India's lower house of Parliament.

India has turned down Elon Musk's request for tax breaks on Tesla's electric cars as it states that the rules allow bringing in partially-built vehicles. Musk has been seeking tax breaks from the Indian government for a while now.

Vivek Johri, chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, in an interview, said, "We looked at whether the duties need to be re-jigged, but some domestic production is happening and some investments have come in with the current tariff structure."

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said that supply chain issues can slow rollout of new vehicles.

Biden's Twitter post came hours after he concluded his meeting with CEOs of General Motors and Ford at the White House, along with other business leaders to discuss his administration's “Build Back Better” legislation.

When asked why Tesla was not included in that event, White House press secretary Jen Psaki noted the three firms in attendance were “the three largest employers of the United Auto Workers” — an indication that Tesla was snubbed because its hourly employees aren’t unionized, reported the New York Post.

This is the second time that Musk was purposefully left out of the meeting.

Last year, Biden invited executives from these companies last year when signed an executive order with the goal of making all vehicles sold in the US electric by 2030.

Musk addressed Tesla’s exclusion from the electric vehicle summit at the Code Conference in California last September.

The billionaire noted that White House officials “didn’t mention Tesla once.”

He accused the Biden administration of being "a little biased" and "seems to be" controlled by unions.

'Biden is a damp sock puppet’: Musk reacts angrily after White House CEO summit snub

Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Thursday revealed the details of what the upcoming line-up of the company is going to look like in 2022.

"I would be shocked if we do not achieve full self-driving safer than human this year," Musk said, predicting full self-driving would become "the most important source of profitability for Tesla."

"It's nutty good from a financial standpoint," he said, saying robotaxis would boost the utility of a vehicle by five times, as owners can send their cars out to work when not needed.

His startup, Neuralink, is working on the implantation of computer chips inside the human brain. It aims to develop implants that can treat neural disorders, and that may one day be powerful enough to put humanity on a more even footing with possible future superintelligent computers.

The probe was initiated after Telsa announced the decision to allow games to be played by passengers on the front centre touchscreen while driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had opened a preliminary evaluation into 2017-2022 Tesla Model 3, S, X, and Y vehicles in December. The evaluation was done over the vehicle's "Passenger Play" feature. The auto safely regulator stated that the gaming feature "may distract the driver and increase the risk of a crash." The authority wants Tesla to furnish a chronology of events and studies supporting its risk assessment. So far, Tesla has not responded. On December 23, Tesla told NHTSA it would stop allowing video games to be played on vehicle screens while its cars are moving, the agency said. Gravitas: Elon Musk blames ‘government challenges’ for Tesla’s India delay

For much of last year, established automakers like General Motors and Ford Motor Co. operated in a different reality from Tesla, the electric car company.

GM and Ford closed one factory after another — sometimes for months on end — because of a shortage of computer chips, leaving dealer lots bare and sending car prices zooming. Yet Tesla racked up record sales quarter after quarter and ended the year having sold nearly twice as many vehicles as it did in 2020, unhindered by an industrywide crisis.

Tesla’s ability to conjure up critical components has a greater significance than one year’s car sales. It suggests that the company, and possibly other young electric car businesses, could threaten the dominance of giants like Volkswagen and GM sooner and more forcefully than most industry executives and policymakers realize. That would help the effort to reduce the emissions that are causing climate change by displacing more gasoline-powered cars sooner. But it could hurt the millions of workers, thousands of suppliers and numerous local and national governments that rely on traditional auto production for jobs, business and tax revenue.

Tesla and its enigmatic CEO, Elon Musk, have said little about how the carmaker ran circles around the rest of the auto industry. Now it’s becoming clear that the company simply had a superior command of technology and its own supply chain. Tesla appeared to better forecast demand than businesses that produce many more cars than it does. Other automakers were surprised by how quickly the car market recovered from a steep drop early in the pandemic and had simply not ordered enough chips and parts fast enough.

When Tesla couldn’t get the chips it had counted on, it took the ones that were available and rewrote the software that operated them to suit its needs. Larger auto companies couldn’t do that because they relied on outside suppliers for much of their software and computing expertise. In many cases, automakers also relied on these suppliers to deal with chip manufacturers. When the crisis hit, the automakers lacked bargaining clout.

Just a few years ago, analysts saw Musk’s insistence on having Tesla do more things on its own as one of the main reasons the company was struggling to increase production. Now, his strategy appears to have been vindicated.

Cars are becoming increasingly digital, defined by their software as much as their engines and transmissions. It’s a reality that some old-line car companies increasingly acknowledge. Many, including Ford and Mercedes-Benz, have said in recent months that they are hiring engineers and programmers to design their own chips and write their own software.

“Tesla, born in Silicon Valley, never outsourced their software. They write their own code,” said Morris Cohen, a professor emeritus at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania who specializes in manufacturing and logistics. “They rewrote the software so they could replace chips in short supply with chips not in short supply. The other carmakers were not able to do that.”

“Tesla controlled its destiny,” Cohen added.

Tesla sold 936,000 cars globally in 2021, an 87% increase for the year. Ford, GM and Stellantis, the company formed from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot, all sold fewer cars in 2021 than they did in 2020.

Measured by vehicles delivered globally, Tesla vaulted past Volvo and Subaru in 2021, and some analysts predicted that it could sell 2 million cars this year, as factories in Berlin and Austin, Texas, come online and a plant in Shanghai ramps up production. That would put Tesla in the same league as BMW and Mercedes — something few in the industry thought possible just a couple of years ago.

GM and Ford, of course, sell many more cars and trucks. Both companies said last week that they sold around 2 million vehicles last year just in the United States.

Tesla, which rarely answers questions from reporters, did not respond to a request for comment for this article. It has said little publicly about how it managed to soar in a down market.

“We have used alternative parts and programmed software to mitigate the challenges caused by these shortages,” the company said in its third-quarter earnings report.

The performance is a stark turnaround from 2018, when Tesla’s production and supply problems made it an industry laughingstock. Many of the manufacturing snafus stemmed from Musk’s insistence that the company make many parts itself.

Other car companies have realized that they need to do some of what Musk and Tesla have been doing all along and are in the process of taking control of their onboard computer systems.

Mercedes, for example, plans to use fewer specialized chips in coming models and more standardized semiconductors, and to write its own software, said Markus Schäfer, a member of the German carmaker’s management board who oversees procurement.

In the future, Mercedes will “make sure we have customized, standardized chips in the car,” Schäfer said in an interview Wednesday. “Not 1,000 different chips.”

Mercedes will also design its own vehicle hardware, he said. Without mentioning Tesla, Schäfer added, “Probably some others were earlier going down this road.”

Doing more on its own also helps explain why Tesla avoided shortages of batteries, which have limited companies like Ford and GM from selling lots of electric cars. In 2014, when most carmakers were still debating whether electric vehicles would ever amount to anything, Tesla broke ground on what it called a gigafactory outside Reno, Nevada, to produce batteries with its partner, Panasonic. Now, that factory helps ensure a reliable supply.

“It was a big risk,” said Ryan Melsert, a former Tesla executive who was involved in construction of the Nevada plant. “But because they have made decisions early on to bring things in-house, they have much more control over their own fate.”

As Cohen of Wharton pointed out, Tesla’s approach is in many ways a throwback to the early days of the automobile, when Ford owned its own steel plants and rubber plantations. In recent decades, the conventional auto wisdom had it that manufacturers should concentrate on design and final assembly and farm out the rest to suppliers. That strategy helped reduce how much money big players tied up in factories but left them vulnerable to supply chain turmoil.

It also helps that Tesla is a much smaller company than Volkswagen and Toyota, which in a good year produce more than 10 million vehicles each. “It’s just a smaller supply chain to begin with,” said Melsert, who is now CEO of American Battery Technology Co., a recycling and mining firm.

The Tesla lineup is also more modest and easier to supply. The Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV accounted for almost all of the company’s sales in 2021. Tesla also offers fewer options than many of the traditional carmakers, which simplifies manufacturing.

“It’s a more streamlined approach,” said Phil Amsrud, a senior principal analyst who specializes in automotive semiconductors at IHS Markit, a research firm. “They are not trying to manage all these different configurations.”

Tesla software, which can be updated remotely, is considered the most sophisticated in the auto business. Even so, the company’s cars likely use fewer chips, analysts said, because the company controls functions like battery cooling and autonomous driving from a smaller number of centralized, onboard computers.

“Tesla has fewer boxes,” Amsrud said. “The fewer the components you need right now, the better.”

Of course, Tesla could still run into problems as it tries to replicate the growth it achieved in 2021 — it is aiming to increase sales about 50% a year for the next several years. The company acknowledged in its third-quarter report that its creative maneuvering around supply chain chaos might not work so well as it increased production and needed more chips and other parts.

The electric vehicle market is also becoming much more competitive as the traditional carmakers belatedly respond with models that people want to buy rather than the small electric vehicles typically made to appease regulators. Ford said this past week that it would nearly double production of the Lightning, an electric version of its popular F-150 pickup truck, because of strong demand. Tesla’s pickup truck won’t go on sale for at least another year.

The outlook for the traditional carmakers is likely to improve this year as shortages of semiconductors and other components ease, and as manufacturers get better at coping.

Tesla vehicles still suffer from quality problems. The company told regulators in December that it planned to recall more than 475,000 cars for two separate defects. One could cause the rearview camera to fail, and the other could cause the front hood to open unexpectedly. And federal regulators are investigating the safety of Tesla’s Autopilot system, which can accelerate, brake and steer a car on its own.

“Tesla will continue to grow,” said Stephen Beck, managing partner at cg42, a management consulting firm in New York. “But they are facing more competition than they ever have, and the competition is getting stronger.”

The carmaker’s fundamental advantage, which allowed it to sail through the chip crisis, will remain, however. Tesla builds nothing but electric vehicles and is unencumbered by habits and procedures that have been rendered obsolete by new technology. “Tesla started from a clean sheet of paper,” Amsrud said.

For much of last year, established automakers like General Motors and Ford Motor Co. operated in a different reality from Tesla, the electric car company. GM and Ford closed one factory after another — sometimes for months on end — because of a shortage of computer chips, leaving dealer lots bare and sending car prices zooming.

Tesla is recalling almost half a million electric cars to address rear view camera & trunk issues

Tesla Inc is recalling more than 475,000 of its Model 3 and Model S electric cars to address rearview camera and trunk issues that increase the risk of crashing, the U.S. road safety regulator said on Thursday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been discussing another camera issue with the automaker, while probing the company's driver assistant system.

The model years affected in the recall range from 2014 to 2021, and the total number of recalled vehicles is almost equivalent to the half a million vehicles Tesla delivered last year.

Around 200,000 Tesla vehicles will be recalled in China, the country's market regulator said on Friday.

The U.S. electric vehicle manufacturer is recalling 356,309 2017-2020 Model 3 vehicles to address rearview camera issues and 119,009 Model S vehicles due to front hood problems, the federal regulator said.

Tesla could not be reached for comment.

For Model 3 sedans, "the rearview camera cable harness may be damaged by the opening and closing of the trunk lid, preventing the rearview camera image from displaying," the NHTSA said.

Tesla identified 2,301 warranty claims and 601 field reports regarding the issue for U.S. vehicles.

For Model S vehicles, latch problems may lead a front trunk to open "without warning and obstruct the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash," Tesla said.

Tesla said it was not aware of any crashes, injuries or deaths related to the issues cited in the recall of Model 3 and Model S cars, the NHTSA said.

Tesla shares fell as much as 3% in the morning but rebounded and were last trading slightly higher around $1,088.76. The world's most valuable automaker is expected to report record quarterly vehicles deliveries as early as Saturday.

China's market regulator said that Tesla will recall close to 200,000 vehicles in the country, including 19,697 imported model S, 35,836 imported model 3, and 144,208 China-made model 3.

Tesla is recalling these electric cars produced ranging from 2015 and 2020 due to possible security risks such as sudden opening of the trunk lid during movement, according to a post on the website of State Admistration for Market Regulation.

CAMERA ISSUE

This month, the NHTSA said it was talking with Tesla about sideview camera issues in some vehicles.

CNBC had reported that Tesla was replacing defective repeater cameras in the front fenders of some US-made vehicles without recalling the parts.

The NHTSA has been investigating 580,000 Tesla vehicles over the automaker's decision to allow games to be played on car screens while they are in motion.

Tesla has subsequently agreed to remove such gaming features while its cars are moving, according to the NHTSA.

Under pressure from NHTSA, Tesla in February agreed to recall 135,000 vehicles with touch-screen displays that could fail and raise the risk of a crash.

In August, the NHTSA opened a formal safety probe into Tesla Inc's driver assistance system Autopilot after a series of crashes involving Tesla models and emergency vehicles.

No more 'Passenger Play' for Tesla drivers as company stops video games in cars

The US has launched a formal investigation following reports that Tesla allowed games to be played on the front centre touchscreen while driving.

The probe is being led by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and covers about 580,000 electric cars and SUVs from model years 2017 through 2022.

In a document posted online Wednesday, the agency said the feature, called “Passenger Play,” may distract the driver and increase the risk of a crash.

NHTSA said it has “confirmed that this capability has been available since December 2020 in Tesla ‘Passenger Play’-equipped vehicles.”

Earlier, the game feature “was enabled only when the vehicle was in park mode.”

NHTSA said it will evaluate aspects of the feature, including the frequency and use scenarios of Tesla ‘Passenger Play’.

Earlier this month, the New York Times highlighted the game feature prompting NHTSA to say it was in discussions with Tesla about the feature.

The New York Times spoke to a Tesla Model 3 owner in December who said that he had discovered he was able to play games including solitaire on his car's touchscreen while driving.

The driver said he had also seen people on YouTube driving while playing games in Teslas.

“I'm astonished. To me, it just seems inherently dangerous,” he told The Times.

Tesla has so far not reacted to the development.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk believes this is the 'biggest threat' to modern civilisation

A woman in US gave birth in the front seat of her electric smart car while it was being driven on autopilot. The baby, born on September, is now being termed as the world’s ‘first Tesla baby’.

Philadelphia resident Yiran Sherry, 33, was with her husband, Keating, 34, and three-year-old son Rafa in the car when the courageous delivery took place, reports US-based newspaper the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The couple and their son were stuck in traffic when Sherry’s water broke. With slow traffic and increasing contractions, the couple decided that they could not wait until they reach the hospital.

Keating Sherry put the vehicle on autopilot mode after setting the navigation system to the hospital, which was 20 minutes away from their current location. He then attended to his wife.

“She was squeezing my hand to the point where I thought she was going to shatter it. I was (saying) ‘Yiran, OK, focus on your breathing.’ That was advice to myself, as well. My adrenaline was pumping,” Keating Sherry told the Inquirer.

In the poll, almost 58 percent of the 3.5 million votes cast were in favor of him proceeding with the sale.
