Researchers have found that TikTok’s algorithms are promoting videos about suicide and eating disorders to vulnerable teens within minutes after creating an account, as concerns over the impact of social media on mental health rise.

The report, published by the non-profit Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) on Wednesday, in its findings claimed that a new TikTok user was exposed to harmful content in less than three minutes after creating an account. While it takes about five more minutes to find content on eating disorders.

These tests were done across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia by creating eight accounts, where the minimum user age is 13.

These accounts liked content about body image and mental health, following which the app recommended videos about losing weight and self-harm, including ones featuring pictures of models and idealised body types, images of razor blades and discussions of suicide.

When the researchers created accounts with user names that suggested a particular vulnerability to eating disorders that included the words “lose weight” the accounts were fed even more harmful content.

“The results are every parent’s nightmare: young people’s feeds are bombarded with harmful, harrowing content that can have a significant cumulative impact on their understanding of the world around them, and their physical and mental health,” Imran Ahmed, CEO of the CCDH, said in the report.

“It’s like being stuck in a hall of distorted mirrors where you’re constantly being told you’re ugly, you’re not good enough, maybe you should kill yourself,” Ahmed added.

The report was strongly criticised by TikTok, whose spokesperson termed it an inaccurate depiction of the viewing experience on the platform.

“This activity and resulting experience does not reflect genuine behaviour or viewing experiences of real people,” the TikTok spokesperson told CNN.

“We regularly consult with health experts, remove violations of our policies, and provide access to supportive resources for anyone in need. We’re mindful that triggering content is unique to each individual and remain focused on fostering a safe and comfortable space for everyone, including people who choose to share their recovery journeys or educate others on these important topics.”

India accounts for nearly one lakh (0.1 million) deaths due to suicide every year, said a report by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Therefore, with the aim to reduce suicide mortality, the government, on Monday, announced the first of its kind, National Suicide Prevention Strategy (NSPS) in India. It maps New Delhi’s time-bound action plan to reduce suicide mortality by 10 per cent (approximately 10,000) by 2030.

India’s record number of suicides

In the last three years, the suicide mortality rate has increased from 10.2 to 11.3 per 100,000 population, said a report by the health ministry. Additionally, the country with the highest youth population also accounts for the most number of suicides recorded among people aged 15-29 years. Furthermore, around 71 per cent of males and 29 per cent of females account for the total number of deaths by suicide in India.

The report also said that the most common reason for committing suicide included family problems (34 per cent) and illnesses (18 per cent). It also noted the economic and professional status of an individual as a factor in the number of suicides as 63.3 per cent occurred among those who earn less than Rs. 1 lakh per annum ($0.1 million) in 2020.

This number nearly halved among those earning between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 5 lakh ($0.5 million) per annum in the same year. The document highlights that across the world at least one in three women who commit suicide are in India while men account for one in four along the same parameter. According to the report, over 60 per cent of suicides happen among people aged 18-45 years.

Last year, India’s rate of deaths by suicide reached a record high with 1,64,033 who took their lives due to various reasons, said a report by the country’s National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). This is a 7.2 per cent increase from the preceding year and implies that India saw over 400 deaths due to suicide every day in 2021.

What is the National Suicide Prevention Strategy (NSPS)?

The health ministry, citing the grim data, broadly seeks to establish effective surveillance mechanisms in the next three years to achieve a 10 per cent reduction in suicide mortality by 2030 through the NSPS.

Some of these mechanisms include establishing psychiatric outpatient departments through the District Mental Health Programme in all districts across the country by 2027 to provide suicide prevention services. Additionally, in line with this programme, the government will also incorporate courses related to mental well-being in educational institutes across India within the next eight years.

In a statement, India’s Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that preventing suicides is now a public health priority and impacts all sections of society. Therefore, it requires “concerted and collaborative efforts” from individuals as well as the community at large.

One of the priorities of this NSPS also includes reducing easy access to means of suicide, in line with which the government plans to phase out hazardous pesticides. The report also noted that the most common method of committing suicide is hanging and poisoning, followed by drowning and immolation. The government also plans to create guidelines for the media on responsible reporting about suicides.

“The most important is early identification of psychiatric illness and early treatment by 80-90%. Because the main problem with suicide is hidden psychiatric morbidity,” said Dr Rajesh Sagar, head of the psychiatric department at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and one of the authors of the report.

Furthermore, citing the report he said that in nearly every case of one suicide there have been at least 10-20 previous attempts to do so and it could be higher. He added, “Therefore, we have suggested several protective factors against suicide such as early primary treatment, psychological support, access to quality treatment, restrict access to means of suicides.”

According to Yale University's reinstatement policy, students who have either attempted suicide or are deemed suicidal, are not allowed on campus. To return, they must reapply, by writing a personal statement and sending in Letters of Recommendation.

Up until April 2022, they were required to take two courses at another four-year university to prove their academic worth.

A woman seeking asylum died by suicide in a New York City homeless shelter, Mayor Eric Adams said on Monday.

The declaration from the mayor comes as the city is having trouble finding housing for the large number of new immigrants.

“The thousands of asylum seekers we have seen arrive in our city came to this country seeking a better life. Sadly though, yesterday, an asylum seeker in one of our facilities took her own life,” Adams said in a statement. “Our hearts break for this young woman and any loved ones she may have, and we, as a city mourn her. This tragedy is a reminder that we have an obligation to do everything in our power to help those in need.”

As reported by the Politico, Adams commended the efforts made by the city to house the thousands of migrants who have arrived there in recent months and once more criticised Texas Governor Greg Abbott for bringing buses full of asylum seekers to the city. Adams stated on Sunday that the city is thinking about suing Texas for bringing migrants to New York without authorization.

“This wasn’t a failure,” he told reporters at an unrelated press conference in Brooklyn when asked if the death represents a failure by the city.

“A woman, I believe, was traumatized by this whole experience. This is not a failure of those men and women, those city employees who have stayed up late at night, been at the bus station feeding, navigating. No, it’s not a failure. City employees are not failures — they’re hardworking civil servants.”

He continued, however, by accusing Abbott of having a policy of forcibly loading certain illegal immigrants onto buses bound for New York after they had crossed the southern border.

“The failure was the governors that sent people on a multi-day bus ride without proper food, without medical care, without basic necessities, telling them they had to be treated in this inhumane way,” Adam’s said. “We didn’t fail in this city. This city is helping people. And again, my heart goes out to that family.”

After opening 23 emergency shelters, the city is in a rush for more room. It has broken its right to shelter law at least twice by failing to provide people with beds in a timely manner.

According to an interview he gave on Sunday, Adams is reportedly considering using cruise ships to shelter homeless asylum seekers.

WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Shedding light on the importance of mental health, a US-government-backed medical expert panel has recommended that adults under the age of 65 in the US get routinely screened for anxiety disorders.

Shedding light on the importance of mental health, a US-government-backed medical expert panel has recommended that adults under the age of 65 in the US get routinely screened for anxiety disorders. The recommendation has been given by an influential advisory group called US Preventive Services Task Force which has added that all adults should be checked for prevailing mental ailments such as depression. Reportedly, the guidance, currently in draft form will be finalised in the coming months after receiving comments from the public. Lori Pbert, a member of the panel and professor at the University of Massachusetts stated that the study could not have come at a more critical time. "When you go to your primary care provider, you get screened for many, many preventive conditions, blood pressure, heart rate, all kinds of things. Mental health conditions are just important as other physical conditions, and we really need to be treating mental health conditions with the same urgency that we do other conditions." Read more: Women's mental health deteriorated more in Covid pandemic: Study It is pertinent to note that the findings of the panel are from the pre-pandemic period. After the pandemic, mental health ailments have increased staggeringly across the planet. However, the study cited a report saying that the percentage of adults having symptoms of anxiety or depressive order had increased to 41.4 per cent from 36.4 per cent between August 20 to February 2021. “Covid has taken a tremendous toll on the mental health of Americans. This is a topic prioritised for its public health importance, but clearly, there’s an increased focus on mental health in this country over the past few years,” added Pbert. Earlier, the panel had recommended anxiety screening for children and teenagers aged between eight and 18. While the recommendations of the panel are not binding or mandatory, the influence it wields can certainly change the way doctors practice medicine in the US. Asn reported by WION, the World Health Organisation (WHO) in a report earlier this year said that cases of anxiety and depression have surged by over 25 per cent globally. Moreover, there was a 27.6 per cent increase in cases of major depressive disorder in the year 2020. Read more: Anxiety and depression cases surged by over 25% due to Covid: WHO "In terms of scale, this is a very large increase. It shows that Covid-19 has had a large impact on people's mental health and wellbeing." said an official at WHO's mental health and substance use department. While the screening recommendation is laudable, the reality is that there is a huge dearth of workforce to put emphasis on mental health well-being. Experts believe that until the number of mental health professionals is not increased, there will not be a major change on the ground. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Adults under 65 should get routinely screened for anxiety, recommends a US study panel

The problems related to mental health are gaining prominence all over the world. Amidst this, a government-backed expert panel have now suggested that adults in United States under the age of 65 must be screened for anxiety.

A new study has drawn links between long Covid and suicides. If you are stressed or anxious before catching the virus, you are more likely to suffer long-term symptoms. Molly Gambhir decodes this worrying link.

Gravitas: Long Covid linked to suicides?

After effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic are immense as some of those who were infected suffer from long Covid, which is a phenomenon of Covid-related ailments remaining in patients long after they recover.

As per the World Health Organization (WHO), long Covid is a complex medical condition that can be hard to diagnose as it has a range of more than 200 symptoms.

When long Covid is concerned, people have reported neurological symptoms, including difficulty thinking or concentrating. Headaches, sleep problems, dizziness, pins-and-needles feeling, loss of smell or taste and depression, etc some of the other reported symptoms.

Some of the symptoms can resemble other illnesses such as exhaustion, cognitive impairment, pain, fever and heart palpitations, etc.

A report by Reuters mentioned the case of Scott Taylor, who never got to move on from COVID-19. Taylor caught the disease in spring 2020.

As per the agency report, the 56-year-old still had not recovered about 18 months later when he killed himself at his home near Dallas, having lost his health, memory and money.

While telling the plight of millions of sufferers of long Covid, Taylor wrote in a final text to a friend, "No one cares. No one wants to take the time to listen."

"I can hardly do laundry without complete exhaustion, pain, fatigue, pain all up and down my spine. World spinning dizzily, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea. It seems I say stuff and have no idea of what I'm saying," Taylor added.

The case highlights the fact that suffering can drag a person to a place where he/she might even think about ending his/her life. Although, there is no authoritative data on the frequency of suicides among sufferers.

But several scientists from organisations including the US National Institutes of Health and Britain's data-collection agency are beginning to study a potential link between long Covid and suicides.

The experts are following evidence of increased cases of depression and suicidal thoughts among people with long Covid.

Leo Sher, a psychiatrist at Mount Sinai Health System in New York who studies mood disorders and suicidal behaviour, said, "I'm sure long COVID is associated with suicidal thoughts, with suicide attempts, with suicide plans and the risk of suicide death. We just don't have epidemiological data."

As per the Reuters report, Sher said pain disorders were a very strong predictor of suicide and inflammation in the brain also. Studies done so far, attempted to link such issues with long Covid. Sher said, "We should take this seriously."

An analysis for Reuters conducted by Seattle-based health data firm Truveta showed that patients with long Covid were nearly twice as likely to receive a first-time antidepressant prescription within 90 days of their initial Covid diagnosis compared with people diagnosed with Covid alone.

Delhi man leaves 77-page suicide note, details how he killed his mother

Gustavo Arnal, the chief financial officer of Bed Bath & Beyond has been identified as the guy who died after jumping to his death from a Manhattan high-rise apartment, the New York City Police Department stated.

The 52-year-old Arnal allegedly died after falling off the balcony of his apartment’s 18th level. The CFO was discovered unconscious and unresponsive outside the story tower.

During a conversation with CNN, a law enforcement source said that Arnal’s wife saw him jump.

The NYPD stated that the probe is still going on.

In response to Arnal’s death, a Bed Bath & Beyond representative expressed that the firm is "profoundly saddened by this shocking loss," CNN reported.

In a statement released on Sunday (September 4), the Board of Directors stated that Arnal joined Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. in May 2020 after working at companies like Avon and Procter & Gamble.

Arnal was regarded as a strong, competent staff builder and was well respected in the banking sector.

However, CNN previously reported that the firm is experiencing difficulty. To save itself and avoid bankruptcy, the firm announced that it would eliminate 150 locations, laying off about 20 per cent of its corporate staff. The company also stated that it will obtain over $500 million in financing to supplement its precarious financial situation.

A class action lawsuit accused Arnal, as a defendant, along with Ryan Cohen and other shareholders, of engaging in a pump and dump conspiracy to inflate the price of the company’s stock. The lawsuit alleged Arnal and others delayed disclosing the ownership and sales of their own shares.

A 30-year-old Indian Sikh woman killed herself at her house in Richmond, New York, following “years of domestic abuse” and exploitation by her husband and in-laws.

Hours before taking her life, Mandeep Kaur recorded a video of herself where she was heard detailing her ordeal. In the nearly five-minute-long clip, she said that her husband, Ranjodhbeer Singh Sandhu—who works as a truck driver—used to beat her up daily.

Her clip was shared on Instagram by The Kaur Movement, an organisation that works for sexual and domestic abuse victims, focusing on the Sikh community. The video quickly became viral on Twitter and Facebook where several enraged people commented on the stigmas in society.

“I tried my best, but I cannot take the daily beatings now. For eight years, I have been tolerating his bad behaviour, hoping that he will mend his ways one day,” the mother of two daughters — aged 6 and 4 — was heard saying in Punjabi as she wept.

"Daddy, I am going to die, please forgive me," she said. Mandeep Kaur died on August 4.

Mandeep’s father, Jaspal Singh, has filed a case against his daughter's in-laws, who live in India and Sandhu, who is in US, at Bijnor police station. He is currently seeking custody of his two granddaughters.

There are collosal problems in our family & social structure which we conveniently ignore or deny to accept. #DomesticViolence against women is one such serious problem. Suicide by Mandeep Kaur a NRI Punjabi woman is a wake up call to accept the problem and fix it accordingly. pic.twitter.com/F8WpkiLCZY — Gurshamshir Singh (@gurshamshir) August 5, 2022 × Mandeep and her husband are from northern state Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor region. She also claimed that her husband had many extramarital affairs over the years. “After seeing the torture inflicted on me, my father got him (Sandhu) booked in a case. Then he pleaded… and got off,” Mandeep said, adding that her husband once held her hostage for five days and beat her up. She further said that she didn’t want to leave her two daughters behind “but now I cannot tolerate this torture anymore and am taking this extreme step”. The Indian mission in New York has said that it is in touch with the authorities and assured to help the grieving family. We are deeply saddened by the death of Mandeep Kaur in Queens, New York under most tragic circumstances. We are in touch with the US authorities at Federal and local level as well as the community. We stand ready to render all assistance.@IndianEmbassyUS @MEAIndia — India in New York (@IndiainNewYork) August 6, 2022 × Meanwhile, many videos—CCTV footage from the couple’s home—of Sandhu torturing his wife were shared online. In one such purported video, he can be seen assaulting and strangulating Mandeep while their daughters are heard crying. In another such clip, Sandhu was seen abusing her wife over wanting a son, and not daughters. In a statement, UK-based NGO Sikh Women's Aid, which works against abuse within the Sikh and Punjabi communities, expressed grief, saying, “She describes a life of abuse, belittling and violence.”

A small ski area in Vermont has announced that it’s retiring its name, Suicide Six, this summer amid growing concerns about the insensitive nature of the historical name, as reported by AP.

The resort said on its website on Tuesday that it shares those concerns and “embraces the increasing awareness surrounding mental health.”

“The feelings that the word ‘suicide’ evokes can have a significant impact on many in our community,” the resort statement said, as reported by AP.

The resort’s website said the name originally came after the man who built one of the runs on Hill No. 6 joked that skiing the steep trail would be suicide.

“The Suicide Six Ski Area has an enduring legacy spanning nearly nine decades, and it is vital that the name better represents and celebrates what makes it a beloved and vibrant part of this community,” the website said.

A new name will be announced in the coming weeks for the ski area in South Pomfret, near Woodstock, which opened in 1936 and is home to the Fisk Trophy Race, a rite of passage for competitive skiers, according to the resort’s website.

Legalisation of marijuana increases consumption and resulting psychological problems and suicides: UN report

Nearing the one-month anniversary of Naomi Judd’s death, the country music legend’s daughter and her The Judds bandmate penned an emotional social media post. According to E! News, Wynonna took to her Instagram handle and wrote, "There is so much happening in the world right now. So before I sat down to write this, I thought, 'No... I just don’t know what to say.’ Then, I heard the words from my life coach asking me, ‘What do you know?’ And I began to cry. "

"I DO know, that the pain of losing Mom on to suicide is so great that I often feel like I`m not ever going to be able to fully accept and surrender to the truth that she left the way she did. This cannot be how The Judds story ends," she continued.

Wynonna said that as a new grandmother, she knew she wanted to "break the cycle of addiction and family dysfunction," and acknowledged that she "must continue to show up" for herself first and "do the personal healing work."

" "I DO know, that the pain of losing Mom on to suicide is so great that I often feel like I`m not ever going to be able to fully accept and surrender to the truth that she left the way she did. This cannot be how The Judds story ends," she continued. Wynonna said that as a new grandmother, she knew she wanted to "break the cycle of addiction and family dysfunction," and acknowledged that she "must continue to show up" for herself first and "do the personal healing work." A wealthy French family obsessed with conspiracy theories linked to Covid jumped to their deaths from their seventh-floor apartment in Montreux, Switzerland, according to police.

The bodies of Eric David, 40, Nasrine Feraoun, 41, her twin sister Narjisse, and their 8-year-old daughter were found at the bottom of a seven-story building just 45 minutes after police arrived at their door.

Police in Vaud said on Tuesday they were investigating the possibility of a 'collective suicide' based on evidence 'all the victims jumped from the balcony one after the other'.

Authorities do not believe anyone else was involved.

During an attempt to execute an arrest warrant on the father over home-schooling, all five members of the family jumped over 65ft to their deaths, police said.

The deaths occurred after two officers arrived at the apartment at 6.15 am to serve a warrant for the father on Thursday in relation to the home-schooling of one of the couple's children.

In response to their knock on the door, the officers heard a voice ask who they were, but once they replied, the apartment went silent. After failing to make contact, the officers left.

All five members of the family jumped from the balcony within five minutes of each other shortly before 7 am.

Police said a step ladder was found on the balcony, but there were no signs of struggle.

'Before or during the events, no witnesses, including the two police officers present on the spot from 6:15 am and the passers-by at the foot of the building, heard the slightest noise or cry coming from the apartment or the balcony,' police said.

'Technical investigations show no warning signs of such an act,' they added, noting however that 'since the start of the pandemic, the family was very interested in conspiracy and survivalist theories'.

Living in virtual self-sufficiency, the family had a well-organized stockpile of various foods that occupied most of the apartment.

Neither the mother nor the girl, who did not attend school, were registered with local authorities, and only the mother's twin sister worked outside the home.

'All these elements suggest... fear of the authorities interfering in their lives,' said the police.

Mass suicide: Obsessed with conspiracy-theories, family of five jumps off of 7 storey building

Former motor racing boss and privacy campaigner Max Mosley died of a gunshot wound in the bedroom of his London home last May after being told his cancer was terminal, an inquest heard on Tuesday.

His family had said at the time that the 81-year-old, youngest son of prominent 1930s British fascist Oswald Mosley, died after a long battle with cancer.

British media said the remote inquest at Westminster Coroner's Court revealed Mosley had been informed he had only weeks to live.

A neighbour and his housekeeper summoned the emergency services after finding a note on his bedroom door saying 'do not enter, call the police'.

The inquest heard Mosley told his long-time personal assistant Henry Alexander a day earlier that he intended to take his own life.

The BBC quoted coroner Fiona Wilcox saying she was 'satisfied' Mosley had intended to kill himself.

Mosley became president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), Formula One's governing body, in 1993. He stayed in office for 16 years.

The tabloid said it involved Nazi-style role-play, which Mosley denied and the newspaper failed to back up in court.
