Indian woman dies by suicide over body-shaming, bullying and harassment at workplace

In South Korea, a politician has linked the rise in male suicides to the increase in the number of working women.

Councillor Kim Ki-duck argues that the increasing participation of women in the workforce has made it more challenging for men to secure jobs and find marriage partners. He claims that the shift towards a "female-dominant society" might "partly be responsible for an increase in male suicide attempts".

As per the BBC, Kim based his assertions on data from Seoul's Han River, which indicates that suicide attempts along the river had increased from 430 in 2018 to 1,035 in 2023 — with the proportion of men rising from 67 per cent to 77 per cent.

He argues that the way to overcome "the female-domination phenomenon" was to improve people's awareness of gender equality so that "men and women can enjoy equal opportunities".

In a comment to BBC, he later defended his claims and said he had "not intended to be critical of the female-dominated society".

Kim faces backlash

The politician is facing backlash for his claims. Experts in suicide prevention have criticised his conclusions as unfounded and potentially harmful.

Song In Han, a mental health professor at Seoul’s Yonsei University, highlighted the global trend of higher male suicide rates and said, "It is dangerous and unwise to make claims like this without sufficient evidence."

Song In San noted that there was a need for scientific study to understand the reasons behind the surge in male suicide attempts in Seoul, and said it was "very regrettable" that the councillor had made it about gender conflict.

According to some witnesses, the robot was seen mysteriously "circling in one spot as if something was there" before it occurred, however, the exact cause is being investigated, said a city council official.

"Pieces have been collected and will be analysed by the company," said the official, further stating that the robot had "helped with daily document deliveries, city promotion, and delivered information" to local residents.

"It was officially a part of the city hall, one of us," added another official, further stating, "It worked diligently."

The local media questioned the robot's suicide, as headlines read, "Why did the diligent civil officer do it?" or questioned "Was work too hard" for the robot?

One of the netizens said on a social media platform, "If the workload had been too much, would he have spun around for a long time and then rushed down the stairs?" Meanwhile, another said: "I pray that scrap metal rests in peace."

In India's West Bengal, a woman has reportedly committed suicide after being harassed and beaten up by members of the village panchayat (elected local governing body). News agency PTI citing police on Tuesday (July 2) reported that the woman from Jalpaiguri district was allegedly flogged in the Bogravita panchayat over a supposed extramarital relationship on June 29.

The incident happened just a day after a similar public flogging incident in the neighbouring Uttar Dinajpur district, where a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) party functionary was accused of punishing a woman and a man for alleged extramarital relations.

Public humiliation and suicide

Police, as per reports, have arrested four people, including two women, based on complaints from the deceased woman's husband and brother over the flogging incident.

The deceased woman's husband, as per an Indian Express report, said that his wife ingested a poisonous substance following the public humiliation and assault by other women from their village, which took place in front of the panchayat.

He stated, "My wife ended her life by drinking some poisonous substance after some women from the village beat her up in front of the panchayat. I complained to the police that my wife died because of these women, as she could not bear the humiliation of being summoned to the kangaroo court and being beaten up publicly."

Reportedly, rumours of an extramarital affair had surfaced when the woman went missing 10 days prior to the incident. Her husband had also filed a missing person report at New Jalpaiguri police station.

She returned home last Saturday, after which the panchayat head, Malati Roy, and her husband, Shankar Roy, purportedly summoned her. Her husband claimed that upon their arrival at the panchayat, they were both assaulted by Roy's supporters.

"Once she came back, my wife was summoned by the panchayat head and TMC leader Malati Roy and her husband Shankar Roy. When we went there, their supporters started assaulting me and my wife," he said.

I reached there when the meeting was going on and the woman said she was going to the washroom. After a while, we came to know that she drank acid."

Political uproar in West Bengal

The incident has sparked political reactions, with BJP MLA Shikha Chatterjee criticising the ruling TMC government and demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Slamming Banerjee, she said: "Most of the women are oppressed during her rule. The CM should resign immediately. It is a heinous crime to summon someone to a kangaroo court and beat them up."

Earlier, TMC spokesperson Jayprakash Majumder had described such incidents as "social problems," and said "They should not be politicised. All political parties should come forward to bring such incidents to an end."

India: Third-year student at IIT Kharagpur, Devika Pillai, dies by suicide

French artist Ben, best known for his ironic painted slogans, died at age 88 by killing himself at his home in Nice, France just hours after his wife’s death, his family said on Wednesday (June 5).

His wife, Annie, suffered a stroke on Monday evening and died on Wednesday, the couple’s two children, Eva and Francois, said in a statement.

“Unwilling and unable to live without her, Ben killed himself a few hours later at their home” in the French Mediterranean city of Nice, they said.

Ben Vautier, widely known by the artistic moniker Ben, was found with a gunshot wound. The Nice prosecutor’s office would open an investigation into his death, reported ArtNews.

Born in Naples in 1935, the artist moved to Nice aged 14 and spent the rest of his life there.

"On our children's pencil cases, on so many everyday objects and even in our imaginations, Ben had left his mark, made of freedom and poetry, of apparent lightness and overwhelming depth," French President Emmanuel Macron said in a statement.

‘Goldsmith of Language’

Associated with the Fluxus movement of the 1960s, Ben sought to disrupt what counted as art, with a style of street-based, provocative irony that proved highly influential.

He would often say, “Everything is art.” He would sign anything he wanted, claiming it as his creation: the bodies of passers-by on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, or even other artists’ work.

“My art will be an art of appropriation. I seek to sign everything that has not been signed. I believe that art is in the intention and that it is enough to sign,” he once said, with a smile as always.

He became best known for his humorous slogans, usually painted in white on a black background, in a childlike handwriting: “What is the use of art?”, “Is the new always new?”, “What are you doing here?”
Vautier’s work earned him a place in the world’s most prominent museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou and the Stedelijk Museum.

His work was also replicated widely, so much so that his slogans became a staple on socks, tote bags, pencil cases and notebooks.

He was also known for his thought-provoking performances: standing in the window of a gallery and shouting until losing his voice, swimming across the Port of Nice, organising plays that never happened and piano recitals where the pianist would run away.

"The world of culture has lost a legend," Culture Minister Rachida Dati commented, dubbing Vautier a "goldsmith of language".

In 2021, a tragedy unfolded when a 43-year-old British woman, Chloe Macdermott, took her own life after making a suicide pact with two individuals she met on an online forum. Now, the coroner investigating the case has called on tech giants Google and Amazon to take action.

The coroner, Paul Rogers, ruled her death as suicide and issued a prevention of future deaths report to tech giants Google and Amazon.

Power to prevent tragedies

In the conclusion of the suicide report, coroner Rogers said that he believed Google and Amazon have the power to prevent tragedies like this.

The report has also been sent to the home, health, and culture secretaries and the national lead for suicide prevention at the National Police Chiefs' Council, reports The Guardian.

He said that it was a matter of concern that the forum used by Macdermott, and other forums like it" encourage suicide, assist it by provision of information about suicide methods, counsel suicide by providing information about it and thereby potentially facilitate the commission of a criminal offence in the United Kingdom".

The forum "permits material to be exchanged and viewed within its open chatrooms whereby suicide is encouraged, assisted, counselled and procured through the provision and exchange of information and methods," he added.

"No age or other restrictions are in place to prevent access to children, vulnerable teenagers and vulnerable adults. No prominent signposting is in place to organisations from whom help is available to prevent suicide. Posts are made by users containing details of methods of suicide without any effective administration to remove such harmful content," the coroner further

The organisations now have 56 days to respond with an outline of how they will attempt to prevent future deaths and a timetable for doing so. Furthermore, if no action is taken, they must explain the reasoning behind that.

What happened to Chloe Macdermott?

On May 23, 2021, Chloe Macdermott who had been struggling with mental health issues for a few years, made a suicide pact with two people she had met online.

While searching for ways to end her life, the 43-year-old stumbled upon an online forum where she planned suicide. Using the poison bought on Amazon, she killed herself.

Last year, a staggering number of people — more than ever — died by suicide in the United States. As per provisional data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), figures dating back to at least 1941 revealed that in 2022, the highest-ever number of people killed themselves in the US.

Disturbing trend

In 2022, there was a disturbing trend of suicides. At least 49,449 lives were lost due to intentional self-harm. This means there were more than 14 suicidal deaths for every 100,000 people.

This is a three per cent increase of the 2021 numbers — 48,183 suicides.

Compared to women (5.9 per cent), men were four times more likely to kill themselves at 23.1 per cent. However, for women, suicide rates, especially for those aged 25 and older, saw an increase. Overall, the rate of suicides in women increased by four per cent, while for men the increase was half at two per cent.

The data found that there was a significant increase in suicides by people over 35 years of age. The rate was highest for people aged 75 and older.

Overall, the 49,449 suicides were "the highest number ever recorded in the United States," as per the CDC.

However, the organisation adds, "The 2022 final number of suicides is likely to be higher as additional death certificates with pending causes of death may be determined to be suicides."

Suicides and the US

As per the report, in the US, suicides have risen "almost steadily" during the 21st century. Both males and females, across nearly every age and race and Hispanic-origin group, experienced the increase.

Owing to the disturbing trend, the US Surgeon General, in 2021, issued a call to action on a national strategy for suicide prevention as well as an advisory for youth mental health.

CNN citing a separate analysis of provisional CDC data by the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions reports that in the year 2022, suicides by firearms reached a record high.

As per the analysis, "the nation's overall gun suicide rate increased 1.6 per cent, reaching an all-time high".

"Gun suicides continued to reach all-time highs, increasing 1.6% from a previous record in 2021; 26,993 people died by gun suicide in 2022. While the increase in gun homicides has gained public awareness, less attention has been paid to the growing epidemic of gun suicides – which historically make up the majority of gun deaths. The gun suicide rate has steadily increased, nearly uninterrupted, since 2006. In 2021, it reached the highest levels since the CDC began recording such data in 1968; and this past year, in 2022, it surpassed that record. "

Self-respect and the sense of having equal rights are key factors in determining how individuals deal with depressive symptoms and ward off suicidal thoughts.

According to the findings published in Health Psychology Open, high self-respect acted as a protector against depression and negative thoughts.

“Self-respect, defined as a person’s belief of possessing the same rights as others, has been suggested as a hitherto often neglected form of self-regard and has been shown as predictor of assertiveness in Western countries,” explained study author Daniela Renger, a university lecturer and research group leader at Kiel University.

“We were interested in finding out whether low self-respect is associated with mental health outcomes such as depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation (potentially via deficits in assertiveness) and whether this pattern can be found in Western and non-Western countries,” he added.

Methodology

To conduct the research, the experts carried out a series of three separate studies.

The combined analysis of the data confirmed a negative correlation between higher self-respect and depressive symptoms, as well as suicidal ideation. Although these connections generally held true, there was some variability among individuals and cultures, suggesting that these associations might be influenced by diverse factors across contexts.

The results imply that interventions and therapy could benefit from emphasising self-respect as a crucial aspect of an individual's self-evaluation.

Addressing the connection between perceptions of unequal rights and entitlements with depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts may prove to be a valuable strategy. Furthermore, cultivating self-respect might enhance assertiveness, positively impacting mental health.

“The more people believe in their basic equal rights compared with others (i.e., the higher their self-respect), the fewer depressive symptoms and the fewer suicidal thoughts they show,” Renger was quoted as saying by PsyPost.

High self-respect acts as protector against depression, suicidal thoughts: Study

Executives from the renowned Japanese all-female theatre company, Takarazuka Revue, have expressed responsibility for the death of a 25-year-old actress, believed to be a result of overwork. The news was reported by the BBC. The actress, who remained unnamed at the request of her family due to the stigma associated with suicide in Japan, was found dead in her condominium on September 30 in what the police suspect was a suicide.

Takarazuka Revue, founded in 1913, has achieved cult status in Japan for its interpretations of romantic musicals, often featuring female performers in male roles. The company is highly sought after, with fierce competition among aspiring young singers and dancers for a spot in its ranks.

Chairman Kenshi Koba, acknowledging the tragic incident, expressed regret for the "loss of life" during a press conference. He also announced his resignation. However, the company did not announce a compensation package for the deceased actress's family, citing a lack of opportunity to address the matter.

The family is currently suing the company for compensation, alleging that the actress faced excessive working hours and bullying by senior members, compromising her mental and physical health. The family's lawyer stated that she was under an outsourcing contract, with her overtime reportedly exceeding 277 hours a month. Takarazuka Revue disputes this figure, putting it at 118 hours a month.

An independent team, primarily consisting of lawyers, was commissioned by the company to investigate the circumstances surrounding the actress's death. While the investigation did not confirm instances of bullying or harassment, it acknowledged the undeniable psychological burden resulting from long hours and pressure from senior members.

In response to the tragedy, Takarazuka Revue executives pledged to implement new measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. One notable change is the reduction of weekly performances from nine to eight. The executives, however, claimed they were not aware of the struggles faced by young artists within the troupe, stating they had received no complaints and were unaware of any staff shortages.
