India: Woman blamed for baby falling from 4th floor, dies by suicide in Coimbatore, says police

8 month old baby fell from 4th floor to a tin roof of 2nd floor

A 33-year-old woman from Chennai, whose infant child recently survived a fall from their fourth-floor balcony, tragically died by suicide during a visit to her family home in Coimbatore, police reported on Monday (May 20).

According to a police officer at Coimbatore’s Karamadai police station, her family told investigators that the woman had been miserable after the incident.

Last month, video made rounds on social media as one of the neighbour had put out a video clip that showed how residents risked their lives to rescue the eight-month-old girl who slipped from her mother’s arms and landed on a shed on the second floor.

Most people praised the neighbours who risked their lives to save the infant, while many criticised the mother, accusing her of being careless.

The police informed that the woman had been feeling depressed following the criticism and came to her parents house in Coimbatore with her husband and two children.

The police officer said she died by suicide on Saturday (May 18) in her parent’s house in Coimbatore. “Her father informed us that they found her dead in the house when they returned,” he said.

Police has registered a case under section 174 Code of Criminal Procedure to investigate the unnatural death. Her body has been sent to the Mettupalayam Government Hospital for post-mortem.

The woman and her husband were working in Chennai.
