Among their friends, these people&nbsp;are often, and jokingly, given names that generally refer to their head be figuratively hotter that others. But what if we told you, that human brain may be hotter than previously thought? And this is irrespective of if a person is 'hotheaded' by nature or not. Brain freeze? Read on to know more.

The average temperature of a healthy human body is around 37 degrees Celsius. It was previously assumed that temperature of the brain would be similar to that of the body. But this study says otherwise.

Scientists from Cambridge University have found that average temperature of a healthy human brain is 38.5 degrees Celsius. Some of the inner regions of the brain were even measured to be at 40 degrees Celsius.

For their study, the scientists recruited 40 volunteers between the ages 20-40 years. Their brain temperatures were acquired by scans taken in morning, afternoon and late evening.

Things such as lifestyle, genetic differences were factored in. The volunteers were also given activity trackers to be worn on their wrists.

It was found that in healthy participants, the average temperature of the brain was 38.5 degrees Celsius. This was more than two degrees hotter than the temperature measured under the tongue. The study also found that the brain temperature varied through the day depending on

Your brain is 'hotter' than previously thought, says this study

A study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal on Saturday has suggested that the symptoms of monkeypox cases in the UK are different than the previous virus outbreak reported in the rest of the world.

The peer-reviewed study came to the conclusion after analysing 54 patients who attended sexual health clinics in London and were diagnosed with monkeypox during a 12-day period in May 2022.

The findings suggested that these patients had a higher prevalence of skin lesions in the genital and anal area, suggesting transmission during close skin-to-skin contact, such as sexual activity. And lower prevalence of tiredness and fever than in cases from previously studied outbreaks of monkeypox.

Based on this study’s findings, the authors called for a review of the definition of the current ‘probable cases’ of monkeypox to help identify the cases.

“Currently, the UK and several other countries are seeing a rapid increase in monkeypox cases among individuals attending sexual health clinics, with no apparent links to countries where the disease is endemic. Monkeypox is a novel diagnosis within the sexual health setting and our study, the first to publish on cases from this UK outbreak, will support future case finding and clinical care.” says Dr Nicolo Girometti, from the Chelsea &amp; Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.&nbsp;

The 54 patients observed in this study represent 60 per cent of the cases reported in the UK during the 12-day study period during May 2022, the Lancet study said.

All except two of the patients in the cohort were not aware of having been in contact with a known case and none reported travel to sub-Saharan Africa, however many had recently visited other European countries.

The researchers have called for additional resources to support services in managing this condition.

Monkeypox symptoms observed in UK different from pervious outbreaks: Lancet study

In order to help its viral takeover, coronavirus fattens up the body cells of the victim. Some fat cells increase around 64 times their normal levels, said a new study. The COVID-19 virus undergoes a massive takeover of the fat processing system of the body. It creates cellular storehouses of fat, which gives it strength to hijack the molecular machinery of the body and cause disease, said scientists. The experts tried to use weight-loss drugs and other fat-targeting compounds to keep a check on the virus in the cell culture. Within 48 hours, the virus stopped replication as it was cut off from its fatty fuel, the study found. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The effect of SARS-CoV-2 was studied by these experts on over 400 lipids in two different human cell lines. A massive shift in the lipid levels was witnessed by the scientists. Some fats increased around 64 times. Around 80% of fats were changed by the virus in one cell line. In the other, around 50% were altered.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Covid virus fattens body cells to initiate its takeover, says study

Viruses can remain alive in fresh water for around three days by hitchhiking on plastics, said researchers. The viruses, which cause diarrhoea or stomach upsets, were found to be able to survive in water by attaching with microplastics, the experts said. The viruses like rotavirus remain infectious and pose a health risk. Researchers from University of Stirling made the observations. “We found that viruses can attach to microplastics and that allows them to survive in the water for three days, possibly longer,” said Prof Richard Quilliam, lead researcher of the project, Stirling University, said. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The standard laboratory methods were used to know whether the viruses found on microplastics in water are infectious. “We weren’t sure how well viruses could survive by ‘hitchhiking’ on plastics in the environment, but they do survive and they do remain infectious,” Quilliam said. &nbsp;

The research, which has been published in the journal ‘Environmental Pollution’, is a part of a £1.85m project funded by the Natural Environment Research Council. The study said that microplastics-enabled pathogens transfer in the environment. &nbsp;

“Being infectious in the environment for three days, that’s long enough to get from the wastewater treatment works to the public beach,” Quilliam said. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“Even if a wastewater treatment plant is doing everything it can to clean sewage waste, the water discharged still has microplastics in it, which are then transported down the river, into the estuary and wind up on the beach,” Quilliam added. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“Sometimes they wash up on the beach as lentil-sized, brightly coloured pellets called nurdles that children might pick up and put in their mouths. It doesn’t take many virus particles to make you sick,” Quilliam said. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“Viruses can also bind to natural surfaces in the environment, but plastic pollution lasts a lot longer than those materials,” said Quilliam.

Viruses can stay alive in fresh water for three days by attaching to microplastics, says study

Two years back the pandemic put an end to life as we knew it, millions all over the world were stuck at home, with not much to do. At a time like that most of us turned to the solace of social media, movies,&nbsp;and television. But how much time did we really spend glued to our screens?&nbsp;

As per a Guardian report, a&nbsp;global review of research on this shows that among children screen time during the COVID-19 pandemic increased on average by 80 plus minutes a day. The biggest daily increase was witnessed among the age group of six and ten. However, a "significant" increase was seen among all age groups including adults.

The biggest increases were seen in elementary school students, who added 83 minutes each day. Adults came next, taking 58 minutes, followed by teenagers (ages 11 to 17), taking 55 minutes. The least amount of time spent watching screens—35 minutes—was increased in children under five, yet even this small rise is nevertheless substantial.

89 studies from nations like the UK, US, Australia, France, Chile, and Israel were examined by researchers. With a total sample size of more than 200,000 persons, the investigation specifically examined increases in screen usage before and during the pandemic.

Researchers found a link between screen time and children's poor diets, poor eye health, declining mental health, including anxiety, and behavioural issues like aggression, irritability, and an increase in temper tantrum frequency. This included time spent watching television or using a computer.

The study also found associations between increased screen usage and unfavourable&nbsp;outcomes in adults. These included negative effects on weight gain, fatigue, and physical inactivity as well as negative impacts on diet, weight, eye health, and mental health, including loneliness, depression, and anxiety.

During the Covid pandemic, children spent more time on computers and phones: Study

Pointing out the gaping gender dsicrimination with regards to giving credit to scientific publications, a new study has claimed that women in the scientific field are less likely to get authorship credit for their work than their male counterparts.

The study, published in Nature, said this discrepancy is ubiquitous in all fields, especially female-dominated fields such as health, as well as in male-dominated fields, such as engineering. It said that the gap was particularly evident during the earliest stages of women’s careers.

The researchers further revealed that the gender discrimination was pretty much skewed in patent-related projects where 60 per cent of men are credited even while sharing the work with women counterparts.

The findings were based on an analysis conducted on administrative data on research projects at 52 US colleges and universities between 2013 and 2016.

They matched information about 128,859 scientists to 39,426 journal articles and 7,675 patents, looking at which people who worked on individual projects received credit and which did not.

They said that only 15 out of 100 female graduate students were ever named as authors on documents, compared to 21 out of 100 male graduate students.

“We have known for a long time that women publish and patent at a lower rate than men. But because previous data never showed who participated in the research, no-one knew why,” said study co-author Julia Lane from NYU.

“There were anecdotes – like that of Rosalind Franklin,&nbsp;who was denied authorship&nbsp;in a famous&nbsp;Nature&nbsp;article by James Watson and Francis Crick despite correctly demonstrating the double helix structure of DNA – but there was no evidence,” explained Dr Lane.

About 43 per cent of women surveyed in the study said they had been excluded from a scientific paper to which they had contributed compared to 38 per cent of men.

“Being a woman [means] that quite often you contribute in one way or another to science but unless you shout or make a strong point, our contributions are often underestimated,” one survey respondent reportedly said.

Women less likely to get authorship on scientific publications than men, finds study

A study from The University of Western Australia has revealed a previously unknown process that plants can make their own “secret decisions” on how much carbon can be released back into the atmosphere.

The study published in Nature Plants&nbsp;suggests that the discovery has "profound implications" for the use of plants as carbon stores. It means that plants of the future could be designed to meet the world's food needs while also aiding the environment.

"We found that plants control their respiration in a way we did not expect, they control how much of the carbon from photosynthesis they keep to build biomass by using a metabolic channel," University of Western Australia plant biochemist&nbsp;Harvey Millar&nbsp;and author of the study told ScienceAlert.

"This happens right as the step before they decide to burn a compound called pyruvate to make and release CO2&nbsp;back to the atmosphere."

The process was discovered while working on a classic plant model organism called thale cress (Arabidopsis&nbsp;thaliana).

The researchers, led by University of Western Australia plant molecular scientist Xuyen Le, labelled pyruvate with C13 (a carbon isotope) to track where it was being shifted during the citric acid cycle, and found that pyruvate from different sources was being used differently.

This means that plant can actually track the source of the pyruvate and act accordingly, choosing to either release it, or hold on to it for other purposes.

"We found that a transporter on mitochondria directs pyruvate to respiration to release CO2,&nbsp;but pyruvate made in other ways is kept by plant cells to build biomass – if the transporter is blocked, plants then use pyruvate from other pathways for respiration,"&nbsp;Le said told Science Alert.

"Imported pyruvate was the preferred source for citrate production."

The study suggests that this ability to make decisions breaks the normal rules of biochemistry, where typically, every reaction is a competition, and the processes don't control where the product goes.

"Metabolic channelling breaks these rules by revealing reactions that don't behave like this, but are set decisions in metabolic processes that are shielded from other reactions," says Millar.

"We found that a transporter on mitochondria directs pyruvate to respiration to release CO2, but pyruvate made in other ways is kept by plant cells to build biomass – if the transporter is blocked, plants then use pyruvate from other pathways for respiration," Le said told Science Alert. "Imported pyruvate was the preferred source for citrate production." The study suggests that this ability to make decisions breaks the normal rules of biochemistry, where typically, every reaction is a competition, and the processes don't control where the product goes. "Metabolic channelling breaks these rules by revealing reactions that don't behave like this, but are set decisions in metabolic processes that are shielded from other reactions," says Millar. Plants can break biochemistry rules and make 'secret decisions' about our future: Study

A study published in a scientific journal has rung alarm bells for Indian megacity Mumbai. The study says that the coastal city is sinking into the sea. And though the rate of 2 mm per year may seem small, the report has recommended that urgent remedial measures should be taken in order to avoid increased flooding in future.

The study has been published in Geophysical Research Letters journal. It said that sinking of Mumbai city was due to a phenomenon called land subsidence. The study, carried out by researchers at University of Rhode Island is titled Subsidence in Coastal Cities Throughout the World Observed by InSAR. It studied land subsidence in 99 countries in the world.

It found that Tianjin in China was the fastest sinking city in the world. The city is sinking at the rate of 5 cm per year.

Land subsidence is downward, vertical movement of the earth. Land subsidence is permanent and irreversible. This is why it is critical to prevent it rather than try for measures afterwards.

The study has found that Tianjin is the fastest sinking city in the world. These are the cities that find place on the list next.

Semarang (3.96cm per year) and Jakarta (3.44cm per year) in Indonesia, Shanghai (2.94cm year) in China, and Ho Chi Minh (2.81mm per year) and Hanoi (2.44cm per year) in Vietnam.

Mumbai is sinking in the sea, says a study

According to new research, children who learn to play well with others at a young age have better mental health as they grow older.

The findings of the research were published in the journal `Child Psychiatry and Human Development`.

The findings provide the first clear evidence that `peer play ability`, the capacity to play successfully with other children, has a protective effect on mental health.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge analysed data from almost 1,700 children, collected when they were aged three and seven. Those with better peer play ability at age three consistently showed fewer signs of poor mental health four years later. They tended to have lower hyperactivity, parents and teachers reported fewer conduct and emotional problems, and they were less likely to get into fights or disagreements with other children.

Importantly, this connection generally held true even when the researchers focused on subgroups of children who were particularly at risk of mental health problems. It also applied when they considered other risk factors for mental health - such as poverty levels, or cases in which the mother had experienced serious psychological distress during or immediately after pregnancy.

The findings suggest that giving young children who might be vulnerable to mental health issues access to well-supported opportunities to play with peers - for example, at playgroups run by early years specialists - could be a way to significantly benefit their long-term mental health.

Dr Jenny Gibson, from the Play in Education, Development and Learning (PEDAL) Centre at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge, said: "We think this connection exists because through playing with others, children acquire the skills to build strong friendships as they get older and start school. Even if they are at risk of poor mental health, those friendship networks will often get them through."

Vicky Yiran Zhao, a PhD Student in PEDAL and the first author of the study added: "What matters is the quality, rather than the quantity, of peer play. Games with peers that encourage children to collaborate, for example, or activities that promote sharing, will have positive knock-on benefits."

The researchers used data from 1,676 children in the Growing up in Australia study, which is tracking the development of children born in Australia between March 2003 and February 2004. It includes a record, provided by parents and carers, of how well the children played in different situations at age three. These covered different types of peer play, including simple games; imaginative pretend play; goal-directed activities (such as building a tower from blocks); and collaborative games like hide-and-seek.

These four peer play indicators were used to create a measure of `peer play ability` - the underlying ability of a child to engage with peers in a playful way. The researchers calculated the strength of the relationship between that measure and reported symptoms of possible mental health problems - hyperactivity, conduct, emotional and peer problems - at age seven.

The study then analysed two subgroups of children within the overall cohort. These were children with high `reactivity` (children who were very easily upset and difficult to soothe in infancy), and those with low `persistence` (children who struggled to persevere when encountering a challenging task). Both these traits are linked to poor mental health outcomes.

Across the entire dataset, children with a higher peer play ability score at age three consistently showed fewer signs of mental health difficulties at age seven. For every unit increase in peer play ability at age three, children`s measured score for hyperactivity problems at age seven fell by 8.4 per cent, conduct problems by 8 per cent, emotional problems by 9.8 per cent&nbsp;and peer problems by 14 per cent. This applied regardless of potential confounding factors such as poverty levels and maternal distress, and whether or not they had plentiful opportunities to play with siblings and parents.

The effect was evident even among the at-risk groups. In particular, among the 270 children in the `low persistence` category, those who were better at playing with peers at age three consistently had lower hyperactivity, and fewer emotional and peer problems, at age seven. This may be because peer play often forces children to problem-solve and confront unexpected challenges, and therefore directly addresses low persistence.

The benefits of peer play were weaker for the high reactivity sub-group, possibly because such children are often anxious and withdrawn, and less inclined to play with others. Even among this group, however, better peer play at age three was linked to lower hyperactivity at age seven.

The consistent link between peer play and mental health probably exists because playing with others supports the development of emotional self-control and socio-cognitive skills, such as the ability to understand and respond to other people`s feelings. These are fundamental to building stable, reciprocal friendships. There is already good evidence that the better a person`s social connections, the better their mental health tends to be. For children, more social connections also create a virtuous cycle, as they usually lead to more opportunities for peer play.

The researchers suggest that assessing children`s access to peer play at an early age could be used to screen for those potentially at risk of future mental health problems. They also argue that giving the families of at-risk children access to environments which promote high-quality peer play, such as playgroups or small-group care with professional childminders, could be an easily deliverable and low-cost way to reduce the chances of mental health problems later.

"The standard offer at the moment is to put the parents on a parenting course," Gibson said. "We could be focusing much more on giving children better opportunities to meet and play with their peers. There are already fantastic initiatives up and down the country, run by professionals who provide exactly that service to a very high standard. Our findings show how crucial their work is, especially given that the other risk factors jeopardising children`s mental health could often be down to circumstances beyond their parents` control."

Research reveals playing with pre-school friends reduces risk of developing mental health problems

With the rise in the number of heart ailments in the recent future, the need to keep the heart healthy seems to have come to the fore. Along with this, several studies have also come up suggesting ways to diagnose risks to the heart. In one such study, the researchers have found that even a simple non-invasive eye examination can predict the risk of heart attack, media reports said.&nbsp;To identify risk of an attack, the information about the pattern of blood vessels in the retina along with traditional clinical factors can be helpful, the researchers found. It has been found to be better in comparison with the established models, which include only demographic data. &nbsp;

The researchers have used data from UK Biobank to calculate a measure called fractal dimension. The biobank has medical and lifestyle records of over 500,000 people. Even an eye test may be able to predict risk of heart attack, says study

With the number of cases of heart ailments witnessing an unprecedented rise, a study has shed some light on the reason behind the worrying trend. The people leading sedentary lifestyles have a high risk of experiencing a stroke in comparison to people who regularly carry out light- to moderate-intensity exercises, the study said. The study was published in the online database ‘JAMA Network Open’ last week. In it, around 7,600 people, who had an average age of around 63, were provided accelerometers and sensitive motion detectors to record physical activity, media reports said. &nbsp;

The people, who indulge in light to moderate exercises for just around 25 minutes a day have less chances of suffering a stroke than those leading a sedentary lifestyle, the researchers of San Diego State University (SDSU) found. &nbsp;

The lead researcher of the study, Steven Hooker, who is also the dean of SDSU’s College of Health and Human Services, said, “Light-intensity physical activity can include vacuuming, sweeping the floor, washing the car, leisure strolling, stretching, or playing catch.” &nbsp;&nbsp;

The people remaining inactive regularly for around 13 hours a day have 44% more risk of experiencing a stroke, the study found. “We observed that both physical activity and being sedentary independently impacted stroke risk. Our research demonstrates that strategies for stroke prevention should focus on both. For overall heart and brain health, move more within your capacity, and sit less,” Hooker said. &nbsp;

Ditch sedentary lifestyle! Sit less, move more to reduce risk of stroke, says study. Read details here

Scientists claimed to have discovered the exact reason how dogs became man’s best friend—the answer lies in the genes.

It has historically been argued that the domestication of dogs was an evolutionary process that started with the wolves about 33,000 years ago somewhere in Southeast Asia.

But a study suggests that dogs have a special gene that lowers their stress, making them more relaxed around people. The research says that this enabled a special relationship to develop between a man and a dog.

The Japanese researchers said that dogs carry two mutations of a gene known as MC2R (melanocortin 2 receptor), Newsweek reported.

This gene produces the hormone cortisol, nature's built-in alarm system which is released during fear or anxiety.

Co-author of the&nbsp;study, Professor Miho Nagasawa of Azabu University, was quoted as saying, "These findings imply MC2R played a role in the domestication of dogs, perhaps by promoting lower levels of stress around humans."

Nagasawa and colleagues investigated the interactions of 624 domestic dogs using two tasks.

In the first, the dog had to decide which bowl had food hidden under it based on cues, such as gazing, pointing and tapping. This experiment tested the animal’s understanding of human gestures and communication.

While the second looked at the social attachment to humans.

The dogs were given a problem-solving test, which involved them attempting to open a container in order to access food. The main of the study was to measure how often and long the dog spent looking at the researchers.

The dogs were separated into two groups depending on their breed – the ancient group (consisting of breeds considered genetically closer to wolves such as the Akita and Siberian Husky) and the general group (all other breeds which are more genetically distant from wolves).

The study found out that the dogs in the ancient group looked at the researchers less often than other dogs during the problem-solving task, suggesting that they were less attached to humans.

The researchers found there were no significant differences between the breeds in the first task.

They then looked for differences in genes associated with human-related cognitive abilities between the groups.

According to the findings, two changes to the melanocortin 2 receptor (MC2R) gene were associated with both correctly interpreting gestures in the first task and gazing at the scientists more often in the problem-solving task.

The Japanese researchers said that dogs carry two mutations of a gene known as MC2R (melanocortin 2 receptor), Newsweek reported. This gene produces the hormone cortisol, nature's built-in alarm system which is released during fear or anxiety. Co-author of the study, Professor Miho Nagasawa of Azabu University, was quoted as saying, "These findings imply MC2R played a role in the domestication of dogs, perhaps by promoting lower levels of stress around humans." Nagasawa and colleagues investigated the interactions of 624 domestic dogs using two tasks. In the first, the dog had to decide which bowl had food hidden under it based on cues, such as gazing, pointing and tapping. This experiment tested the animal’s understanding of human gestures and communication. While the second looked at the social attachment to humans. The dogs were given a problem-solving test, which involved them attempting to open a container in order to access food. The main of the study was to measure how often and long the dog spent looking at the researchers. The dogs were separated into two groups depending on their breed – the ancient group (consisting of breeds considered genetically closer to wolves such as the Akita and Siberian Husky) and the general group (all other breeds which are more genetically distant from wolves). The study found out that the dogs in the ancient group looked at the researchers less often than other dogs during the problem-solving task, suggesting that they were less attached to humans. The researchers found there were no significant differences between the breeds in the first task. Also read | Now, India can safeguard animals against Covid with its own jab, Anocovax. Read details here They then looked for differences in genes associated with human-related cognitive abilities between the groups. According to the findings, two changes to the melanocortin 2 receptor (MC2R) gene were associated with both correctly interpreting gestures in the first task and gazing at the scientists more often in the problem-solving task. If research is to be believed, rice seems to have led to the 'downfall' of chickens. Well, not literally. But the study has found that the chickens used to live high up in trees and were tempted to come down due to rice farming. This new study, which has been conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford, the University of Exeter and Cardiff University, has been published in the journal ‘Antiquity’. According to them, the birds seem to be a relatively new addition to farms.&nbsp;This research also says that humans seem to have not come into close contact with chickens till 1500 BC. &nbsp;

A diabetes drug seems to help people with obesity in losing weight significantly, said researchers. The effect can be seen with a weekly dose of the drug. The experts have hailed the drug as a game-changer. In a 72-week trial, participants lost around 20% of their body weight. The report has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In the research, the team of international researchers said that they had split 2,539 overweight or obese participants into four groups.&nbsp;One group was given a placebo injection once a week for 72 weeks, while the other three were provided either 5mg, 10mg or 15mg of a new drug called tirzepatide. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Every participant was asked to take low-calorie meals and ensure around 150 minutes of physical activity a week. On average, the participants had a body weight of 104.8kg and 94.5% were obese. The majority of the people were white and female. No one had diabetes. &nbsp;

Diabetes drug helps people with obesity to lose weight significantly, says study

Alps are the new victim of climate change. The snow-white mountains seem to be turning green, media reports said citing a study. The change is visible from space. Now, green plants can be seen in the mountain range. The research, which has been published in ‘Science’, used satellite data to come up with the findings. Since 1984, the vegetated areas above the treeline seems to have increased by 77% in the Alps, the study said. The rise in the plant biomass is described by the researchers as an “absolutely massive” change. &nbsp;

The growing season is prolonging due to rising temperatures and increased rainfall. It is helping plants in colonising new areas and becoming taller.&nbsp;“The scale of the change has turned out to be absolutely massive in the Alps,” said Prof Sabine Rumpf from the University of Basel. He is also the lead author of the research. &nbsp;

The loss of less than 10% snow cover above treeline is significant, the scientists said. Mountain areas seem to be heating up around twice as fast as the average globally.&nbsp;More plants at high altitudes may threaten Alpine plants as they are adapted to harsh conditions but are not competitive, as per Rumpf. “The unique biodiversity of the Alps is therefore under considerable pressure,” said Rumpf. &nbsp;

“Previous analyses of satellite data hadn’t identified any such trend. This may be because the resolution of the satellite images was insufficient or because the periods considered were too short,” said Prof Antoine Guisan of the University of Lausanne. &nbsp;

The subjects of gun ownership and gun violence have always been quite polarising in the United States and a new set of data shows quite an alarming problem when it comes to stolen guns.

A new data analysis, conducted by the nonprofit Everytown for Gun Safety, stated that more guns are being stoles from vehicles in the United States. This has given rise to the number of illegal firearms around the country and as shootings rise, this makes it difficult to trace the weapons.

According to the data, 180 cities around the country saw a rise in guns stolen from vehicles between 2019 and 2022. It also pointed out that vehicles are the major source of stolen guns at the moment.

In 2020 alone, around 77,000 guns were reported stolen in the 271 cities included in the study and almost half of them were taken from the vehicles of the gun owners. This is a relatively new trend in the US where burglaries were the main source of stolen guns for a very long stretch of time.

The data showed that the trend is more or less consistent in a number of states in the country and according to police records, a number of these stolen guns have turned up at various crime scenes.

The study did not offer any specific reason behind this trend but according to NBC News, the COVID-19 pandemic may have contributed to the rise of guns stolen from vehicles as most people were indoors and the cars were left unattended for a long time making it easier for the guns to be stolen.

Study finds Omicron variant of Covid is as severe as Delta variant

The Omicron variant of COVID-19 is intrinsically as severe as previous variants, unlike assumptions made in previous studies that it was more transmissible but less severe, a large study in the United States has found.

"We found that the risks of hospitalisation and mortality were nearly identical between periods," said four scientists who conducted the study based on records of 130,000 COVID-19 patients, referring to times in the past two years when different variants were dominant across the world.

The study, which is undergoing peer review at Nature Portfolio and was posted on Research Square on May 2, was adjusted for confounders including demographics, vaccination status, and the Charlson comorbidity index that predicts the risk of death within a year of hospitalisation for patients with specific comorbid conditions.

The studies that assumed the Omicron variant was less severe were conducted in various places including South Africa, Scotland, England, and Canada, said the scientists from Massachusetts General Hospital, Minerva University and Harvard Medical School.

They said their study could have several limitations, including the possibility that it underestimated the number of vaccinated patients in more recent COVID waves, and the total number of infections, because it excluded patients who performed at-home rapid tests.

A spike in infection rates was witnessed among people, who had Omicron, but weren’t vaccinated, in comparison to their vaccinated counterparts, scientists found while examining the Omicron’s BA.4 and BA.5 sublineages. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The blood samples of 39 people, including 15 who were vaccinated, were also taken by scientists. &nbsp;

In a preprint over the weekend, the scientists wrote, "The vaccinated group showed about a 5-fold higher neutralisation capacity ... and should be better protected." &nbsp;&nbsp;

New Omicron variants can cause a fresh wave of the Covid pandemic, a study has said. The new variants have been able to bypass natural immunity from prior COVID-19 infections, the study conducted in South Africa added. As new cases of coronavirus are still rising, it seems that it is not over yet. Also Read: Dangerous superbugs may get transmitted from pigs to humans, say scientists A spike in infection rates was witnessed among people, who had Omicron, but weren’t vaccinated, in comparison to their vaccinated counterparts, scientists found while examining the Omicron’s BA.4 and BA.5 sublineages. The blood samples of 39 people, including 15 who were vaccinated, were also taken by scientists. In a preprint over the weekend, the scientists wrote, "The vaccinated group showed about a 5-fold higher neutralisation capacity ... and should be better protected." The origin of the world and its subsequent development has been a keen source of interest for scientists. They have conducted huge number of tests in order to determine the source of life on the planet and it seems that a latest study can hold important answer to the age-old questions.

A study conducted by Yasuhiro Oba of Hokkaido University’s Institute of Low Temperature Science in Japan and astrobiologist Danny Glavin of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland hints at the fact that ingredients needed for the advent of life on earth may have arrived from outer space.

The study, which was published in the journal Nature Communications, included the examination of meteorites which were found in the United States, Australia and Canada. It was found the meteorites contained three out of five chemical components needed in the formation of DNA. The other two components were also detected after the researchers adjusted the system of analysis.

The meteorites examined in the study were from three different sources – one from the US state of Kentucky in 1950, one from the Tagish Lake in Canada in 2000 and the third one from Victoria in Australia in 1969. All of them were carbonaceous chondrites – a carbon-rich rocky material.

According to Yasuhiro Oba, the method used in the experiment did not include strong acids in order to extract the components from the meteorites. As a result, the study further bolsters the theory that meteorites played a major role in the development of the first living organisms in the world.

Study shows key ingredients needed for life on earth may have arrived from outer space

The pandemic took so much from everyone's loved ones: time, mental health, physical health, and just as we began to believe that living with the coronavirus was possible, here's another bad news.

People hospitalised during the pandemic for Covid and other reasons have a higher prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections than people hospitalised before the pandemic says a study.

Court stays execution of Texas woman who claims confession was coerced</a>

Antibiotic-resistant infections claimed the lives of an estimated 1.2 million people worldwide in 2019, with the number anticipated to increase by more than tenfold by 2050.

The study, which was presented at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) in Portugal this year, looked at how the pandemic affected antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in 271 hospitals across the United States.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) secondary infections have been linked to the pandemic in the past. It is thought to be&nbsp;a result of increased antibiotic use to treat COVID-19 patients and interruptions to infection prevention and control measures in overburdened health systems.

During the pre-pandemic period, 1,789,458 patients were admitted to the hospital, and 3,729,208 were hospitalised during the pandemic.

In the pre-pandemic period, there were 63,263 people admitted to the hospital with at least one AMR infection, and during the pandemic, this number more than doubled,&nbsp;increasing&nbsp;to a whopping&nbsp;129,410.

AMR was shown to be more prevalent during the pandemic, with rates of 4.92 per 100 admissions during the epidemic and 4.11 per 100 admissions before the pandemic, according to the study.

Do fungi communicate with each other like humans? Well, anyone would say no. But a new study suggests that they may be great communicators. &nbsp;

The secret of their communication seems to have been spilled by the mathematical analysis of the electrical signals' the fungi send to one another. The patterns are structurally similar to human speech, said the study. &nbsp;

Earlier, research had shown fungi conduct electrical impulses like nerve cells transmit information in humans. To understand if this electrical activity has anything in common with human language, Prof Andrew Adamatzky, who is working at University of the West of England’s unconventional computing laboratory in Bristol, analysed the patterns of electrical spikes, which were generated by four species of fungi like split gill, enoki, ghost and caterpillar fungi. &nbsp;

“We do not know if there is a direct relationship between spiking patterns in fungi and human speech. Possibly not. On the other hand, there are many similarities in information processing in living substrates of different classes, families and species. I was just curious to compare,” Adamatzky told the Guardian. &nbsp;

Coronavirus has been tormenting the whole world for last two years. The number of cases is still rising in some countries. Ever wondered how does it actually infects humans? Well, now we have an answer to this riddle. &nbsp;

A tiny virus-laden droplet can infect someone with COVID-19, said a study. &nbsp;

The findings of the research, where volunteers were deliberately infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has been published in the journal ‘Nature Medicine’ on Thursday. This is the world's first human challenge study.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Challenge studies involve intentionally giving someone a virus to study its effects on the human body. It is risky but hugely valuable to understand the course of an infection. &nbsp;&nbsp;

"Really, there's no other type of study where you can do that, because normally, patients only come to your attention if they have developed symptoms, and so you miss all of those preceding days when the infection is brewing," said Dr Christopher Chiu, an infectious disease physician and immunologist at Imperial College London and the lead author of the study. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The study, which began in March 2021, had volunteers aged between 18 and 30. The volunteers were infected with the originally detected strain of the virus. &nbsp;

They were monitored medically for 24 hours a day. They also stayed at London's Royal Free Hospital for two weeks.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A total of 18 participants became infected. Two never developed symptoms. Around 83% study participants, who got infected, lost sense of smell. &nbsp;

Non-traditional shifts can delay the onset of natural menopause, revealed a new study. &nbsp;
