According to a new Pew Research Center survey, sentiments toward President Xi Jinping around the world have deteriorated over the past several years and have "become dramatically more negative" since the Chinese leader assumed office in 2013.

Prior to the Chinese Communist Party (CPC 20th)'s national congress next month, a data report illustrating global public opinion of China and Xi, released on Wednesday, focuses on five issues: China's military might and influence, its human rights practises, the nation's economy, Covid-19, and the Chinese people.

Attitudes were "already quite negative" in the spring of 2014, nearly a year after Xi Jinping assumed power, with people in the majority of the locations surveyed by Pew feeling more negatively than favourably.

“Views about the Chinese President turned more negative between 2019 and 2020. By 2022, majorities in all but two advanced economies surveyed had little to no confidence in his approach to world affairs,” Pew said.

The opinion about China in the US and other advanced economies has “turned precipitously more negative” since Xi’s rise to power in 2013, it said. “In the US, the sense that China has handled Covid-19 poorly and is at fault for the virus’s spread certainly is related to negative opinions of the superpower, but is not the only factor driving attitudes,” it added.

Views about China have changed over time due to a variety of causes, according to a study based on surveys conducted by the Pew Research Center during a 20-year period.

Prior to the pandemic, negative attitudes toward China were already on the rise in the US and other nations, including some of China's neighbours like South Korea, Japan, and Australia.

Concerns about Beijing's policies on human rights, its military might, and economic aspects like trade have led to negative perceptions of China around the world.

Since 2002, the Pew Research Center has surveyed people in more than 60 nations to determine how people worldwide feel about China. The analysis focuses mainly on data from advanced economies polled between 2020 and 2022 because the centre was unable to survey the majority of emerging economies during the Covid-19 pandemic.

One of the analysis's main conclusions is that there is a "widespread and long-held sense that China's power and influence on the global stage is growing," that there are still many people worried about China's military, and that the perception that China does not respect human rights is at or near historic highs in many of the places studied in 2021.

As of 2022, a median of 66% of people in 19 nations believe that China's influence has lately increased, with percentages of at least 71% in Australia, Italy, Israel, Greece, and the Netherlands. There is a perception that China is a "growing threat" in addition to its expanding influence.

However, opinions on how the Chinese economy ties to other nations' economies vary. The US, Australia, South Korea, Japan, and other advanced economies were particularly concerned about China's potential for increased economic competition. However, not everyone has always believed that China's economic expansion is negative for their nations. In 2019, almost half of people in North America and around half or more of people in Australia, Japan, and South Korea stated that China's expanding economy was beneficial for their respective nations.

Pew Research: Global opinion of China ‘more negative’ since President Xi Jinping took office

Researchers from Stanford University, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, have put out a study which suggests that feeling unhappy, lonely or depressed could speed up your ageing process.

Study: Unhappiness can age you faster than smoking

Study: Unhappiness can age you faster

One of the largest studies of its kind published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine has shown that regular exercise with weights can lower the risk of premature death.

The research found that those who did 'regular' weightlifting had a 14 per cent lower risk while those who met the aerobic activity levels had a 32 per cent lower risk of premature death.

The study also added that adults who reported meeting the aerobic activity guidelines and weightlifting at least one or two times every week were found to have a 41 per cent to 47 per cent lower risk of premature death.

To arrive at the numbers, US’s National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland examined the research data from almost 100,000 US adults that took part in the study, spread across more than nine years.

Reportedly, the study took participants who had an average age of 71 and asked them about the kind of exercise regimen they partake in. While 23 per cent reported having been involved in weightlifting, 16 per cent said they used weights at least one time to six times a week.

Over the next 9.6 years of the study, more than 28,447 deaths were reported with the researchers observing that participants who did weightlifting had a 9 per cent lower “all-cause mortality risk”

The researchers stated that using weights in a workout can make a body leaner as total lean mass is independently associated with a lower risk of premature death.

Weight exercise can lower risk of premature death: Study

Ever since the world got hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, all of us have faced a number of challenges that we weren't expecting to tackle in the pre-COVID era. The challenging times tested us in ways more than one. Many lost their jobs, got relocated, and lost a fortune due to the pandemic's impact. To sum it up, we can say that it was a stressful time for all of us. Now, in one of the largest studies on women’s well-being, it has been found that levels of stress, anxiety, worry, sadness and anger among women worldwide were at a 10-year high in 2021 post-pandemic.

According to Hologic Global Women’s Health Index, which conducts an annual survey to provide timely, globally comprehensive data from women's perspectives on their health and wellbeing, worry, stress and anger levels among women rose by 3%, while sadness rose by 6% in 2021 as compared to 2020. The stats are all record highs since the Hologic Global Women’s Health Index began tracking emotional health almost a decade ago.

The survey that was conducted among 66,000 women from 122 countries also reported that 43% of respondents said they experienced some form of worry in 2021, 41% reported feeling stressed, 32% reported feeling sad, and 26% reported feeling angry.

“The lack of progress and, in some cases, backward momentum justify an even louder wake-up call for world leaders to do more for women, whose well-being underpins the health of families, communities, societies and economies,” said Hologic president and CEO Steve MacMillan.

The gender gap in emotional health between men and women has also widened within a year, as 39% of men report feeling worried, 39% stressed, 26% sad, and 21% angry.

“A lot of that has to do with traditional roles in terms of caregiving and responsibility for making sure that children are fed and tending to illnesses – even in high-resourced countries,” said Dr Elizabeth Fitelson, director of the women’s program at Columbia University’s psychiatry department. “Many of these burdens still disproportionately fall on women in addition to needing to work and having multiple roles.”

The topography of Mars has been a subject of interest for researchers over the years and they have now found a new process to understand how the surface of the planet has changed over time due to the impact of space rocks. According to a new line of studies, the scientists are using shock waves created on impact to find the exact position and depth of the craters on the surface of Mars.

“This is the first time we have felt and heard an impact on another planet,” said Raphael Garcia, a planetary seismologist at the Higher Institute of Aeronautics and Space at the University of Toulouse.

The data used in this method was taken from NASA’s InSight lander which provided an insight into seismic activities on Mars between May 2020 and September 2021. It took into account small space rocks as well as meteoroids which came in contact with the surface of the red planet.

The study, which was published in Nature Geoscience, succeeded in mapping the surface of Mars up to a certain extent and also helped in understanding the crust of the planet. In an atmosphere where impact craters are extremely common, the study showed the impact they had on changing the landscape of Mars and over time, how it has slowly impacted the composition of the surface.

“If people want to know if a surface is older or younger, it is critical to know the impact rate, but we are not there yet,” said Garcia when asked about the exact accuracy of the study.

Research on over 1 million people from eight countries discovered that moderate use of black, green, or Oolong tea is linked to a lower risk of getting type 2 diabetes. The findings, being presented at this year's European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting in Stockholm, Sweden (19-23 Sept), suggest that drinking at least four cups of tea a day is associated with a 17 per cent lower risk of T2D over an average period of 10 years.

"Our results are exciting because they suggest that people can do something as simple as drinking four cups of tea a day to potentially lessen their risk of developing type 2 diabetes", says lead author Xiaying Li from Wuhan University of Science and Technology in China.

While it's long been known that regularly drinking tea may be beneficial for health because of the various antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic compounds tea contains, less clear has been the relationship between tea drinking and the risk of T2D. So far, published cohort studies and meta-analyses have reported inconsistent findings.

To address this uncertainty, researchers conducted a cohort study and a dose-response meta-analysis to better define the relationship between tea consumption and future T2DM risk.

First, they studied 5,199 adults (2583 men, 2616 women) with no history of T2D (average age 42) from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), who were recruited in 1997 and followed until 2009. The CHNS is a multicentre prospective study looking at the economics, sociological issues and health of residents from nine provinces.

At the outset, participants filled in food and drink frequency questionnaires and provided information on lifestyle factors such as regular exercise, smoking and alcohol consumption. Overall, 2,379 (46%) participants reported drinking tea, and by the end of the study, 522 (10%) participants had developed T2D.

After adjusting for factors that are known to be linked with increased risk of T2D, like age, sex, and physical inactivity, researchers found that tea drinkers had a similar risk of developing T2D compared to non-drinkers. And the results did not change significantly when analysed by age and sex, or when participants who developed diabetes during the first 3 years of follow-up were excluded.

In the next step of the study, the researchers did a systematic review of all cohort studies investigating tea drinking and the risk of T2D in adults (aged 18 or older) up to September 2021. Overall, 19 cohort studies involving 1,076,311 participants from eight countries [1] were included in the dose-response meta-analysis.

They explored the potential impact of different types of tea (green tea, oolong tea, and black tea), frequency of tea drinking (less than 1 cup/day, 1-3 cups/day, and 4 or more cups/day), sex (male and female), and the location of the study (Europe and America, or Asia), on the risk of T2D.

Overall, the meta-analysis found a linear association between tea drinking and T2D risk, with each cup of tea consumed per day reducing the risk of developing T2D by around 1%. When compared with adults who didn`t drink tea, those who drank 1-3 cups daily lowered their risk of T2D by 4%, while those who consumed at least 4 cups every day reduced their risk by 17%.

The associations were observed regardless of the type of tea participants drank, whether they were male or female, or where they lived, suggesting that it may be the amount of tea consumed, rather than any other factor, that plays a major role.

"While more research needs to be done to determine the exact dosage and mechanisms behind these observations, our findings suggest that drinking tea is beneficial in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, but only at high doses (at least 4 cups a day)", says Li.

She adds, "It is possible that particular components in tea, such as polyphenols, may reduce blood glucose levels, but a sufficient amount of these bioactive compounds may be needed to be effective. It may also explain why we did not find an association between tea drinking and type 2 diabetes in our cohort study because we did not look at higher tea consumption."

Oolong tea is a traditional Chinese tea that's made from the same plant used to make green and black teas. The difference is how the tea is processed--green tea is not allowed to oxidise much, black tea is allowed to oxidise until it turns black, and oolong tea is partially oxidised.

Despite the important findings, the authors note that the study is observational and cannot prove that drinking tea reduced the risk of T2D, but suggests that it is likely to contribute. And the researchers point to several caveats, including that they relied on subjective assessments of the quantities of tea consumed and they cannot rule out the possibility that residual confounding by other lifestyle and physiological factors may have affected the results.

Drinking tea may reduce risk of type 2 diabetes: Study

A newly published research has revealed how air pollution can cause lung cancer in individuals who have never smoked in their lives. The findings of the research could help the medical industry in preventing and treating tumours by rewriting our understanding of them.

Reportedly, the scientists found that fine particulates in polluted air activated the dormant, pre-existing cancer genes in the lungs of an individual which were inflamed due to inhaling the polluted air.

The research helps in the understanding of medical experts as to why so many non-smokers tend to develop lung cancer or tumours.

The researchers of the study remarked that although smoking remains the primary cause of lung cancer, the fact that air pollution activates dormant cancer genes should be a 'wake-up' call for everyone.

"Globally, more people are exposed to unsafe levels of air pollution than to toxic chemicals in cigarette smoke, and these new data link the importance of addressing climate health to improving human health," said Professor Charles Swanton of the Francis Crick Institute. We've all had our parents tell us that these devices will be the death of us. Now, new research has provided proof that electronic devices like smartphones, computers, and tablets and the excessive blue light they emit can significantly speed up our ageing process.

PTI quotes Jadwiga Giebultowicz, the senior author of the study and a professor at Oregon State University, as saying "Excessive exposure to blue light from everyday devices, such as TVs, laptops, and phones, may have detrimental effects on a wide range of cells in our body, from skin and fat cells, to sensory neurons."

The research, which was published in the journal Frontiers in Aging, suggests that limiting excessive blue light exposure could be an effective anti-ageing tactic.

Oxford University recently released an intriguing research which might force most of us to reach down and pinch our waists while reading the article. Reportedly, the research states that every extra inch on a person's waistline can increase the risk of heart failure by 10 per cent. The study, which took 13 years and over 430,000 British subjects to complete was presented at the European Society of Cardiology congress in Barcelona. Reportedly, the participants had an average age of 56 and 8,669 suffered first-time heart failure events, with many proving fatal as well. The study effectively meant that a person having a waistline of 41-inch might be 40 per cent more likely to contract heart-related illness when compared to a person having a 37-inch waist. Read more: New study shows artificial sweeteners may increase sugar levels, affect gut health Moreover, according to the researchers, people with bigger waistlines were more likely to develop heart conditions than those weighing heavier. Dr Ayodipupo Oguntade, the lead researcher of the study confirmed that 'trunk fat' was a major indicator of a person developing heart conditions. "The amount of fat people carry around their trunk is more important in tracking body fatness and cardiovascular risk." said Dr Oguntade. He further added that a person with a bigger waistline was 3.21 times more likely to suffer heart failure compared to a person having a high Body Mass Index. The person in the latter category had 2.65 times the risk of suffering heart failure. Marijuana use on the rise among young Americans: Study

Dogs are an instant source of serotonin and oxytocin for many. The way they jump across the room and rush to their owners, wagging their cute little tails is something that seals an eternal bond between humans and their most faithful pet. Now, a study has revealed that during this reuniting moment, dogs tend to get more teary-eyed than usual.

Reportedly, the study published by Japanese scientists in the journal Current Biology states that dogs tear up with joy and happiness whenever they are reunited with their owners after a prolonged period of absence.

"We found that dogs shed tears associated with positive emotions. We also made the discovery of oxytocin as a possible mechanism underlying it," said one of the authors related to the study.

The team of scientists used a test called the Schirmer Tear Test to gauge its hypothesis on 20 dogs. In the test, a paper strip is placed inside the eyelid of the furry pets for a minute before and after they were reunited with their owners.

To make the results more comprehensive and true, the scientists used a normal meeting of the dog and its owner as the baseline. Afterwards, both readings were compared, allowing the scientists to make an informed inference.

The study clearly showed that the dogs produced more tears within the first five minutes of the reunification. Reportedly, the baseline readings were around the 22mm mark, which increased by 10 per cent after the meeting.

According to the researchers, they even compared the data when the dogs were reunited with someone they were familiar with. However, the tears only increased when reunited with the owner.

Takefumi Kikusui, co-author of the study and a professor at the Laboratory of Human-Animal Interaction first got the idea of conducting such research when he saw his poodle swell up with tears while tending to her.

"That gave me the idea that oxytocin could increase the tears,” remarked Kikusui.

Dogs get more teary-eyed after being reunited with their owners: Study

Although urinary tract infections are common, treating them is getting harder as the bacteria that cause them develop antibiotic resistance. Researchers identified a new chemical that inhibits drug-resistant bacteria through lab tests and in mice with pneumonia and urinary tract infections. According to the researchers, this compound, called fabimycin, may one day be used to treat serious infections in people.

The journal ACS Central Science published the study's findings.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, gram-negative bacteria are a group of germs that cause illnesses like pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and bloodstream infections in millions of people worldwide.

These bacteria have powerful defensive mechanisms, including hard cell walls that keep the majority of drugs out and pumps that effectively remove those antibiotics that do get inside, making them particularly challenging to treat. The bacteria can also change through mutation in order to resist numerous medications. Additionally, the treatments that do work are not very precise, eliminating a variety of microorganisms, even helpful bacteria.

Paul Hergenrother and his team set out to create a medication that might overcome gram-negative bacteria's defences and treat illnesses while leaving other beneficial germs unharmed.

Starting with an antibiotic that was effective against gram-positive bacteria, the team made a number of structural changes that they thought would enable it to be effective against gram-negative infections.

While remaining largely inactive against some gram-positive pathogens and some normally benign bacteria found in or on the human body, one of the modified chemicals, fabimycin, was shown to be effective against over 300 drug-resistant clinical isolates.

The novel compound also performed as well as or better than existing antibiotics at comparable doses in reducing the quantity of drug-resistant bacteria in mice with pneumonia or urinary tract infections to pre-infection levels or lower. The findings, according to the researchers, suggest that fabimycin may one day prove to be a potent cure for difficult-to-treat illnesses.

Study reveals new molecule that inhibits drug-resistant bacteria

A new study has revealed that even low levels of pollution can be extremely harmful and, in the long run, cause considerable health damage. The research, which was carried out in Canada, found that around 8000 people in the country die every year because of air pollution. It came as a surprise as Canada has generally accounted for extremely low levels of pollution in the past few decades.

The study took into account more than 7 million Canadian citizens between the years 1981 and 2016 along with the air pollution data in the same period of time. The aim was to find out whether the low air pollution levels caused less damage, but the death toll hinted at a different reality.

Low levels of pollution also cause major health damage, study finds

A recent study conducted by Stockholm University scientists revealed that drinking rainwater is highly harmful due to levels of toxic compounds also known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl) surpassing the guidelines. The chemicals are forever chemicals. This is because they disintegrate extremely slowly. The study was published in Environmental Science and Technology.

PFAS were first discovered in shampoos and cosmetics but have now spread to the entire environment, including air and water.

In conversation with AFP, Ian Cousins said, "There is nowhere on Earth where the rain would be safe to drink, according to the measurements that we have taken." He further said, "even in Antarctica or the Tibetan plateau, the levels in the rainwater are above the drinking water guidelines that the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) proposed," as his team compiled data since 2010.

Studies have shown that exposure to PFAS can also affect fertility, retard infant development, increase the risk of obesity, and even raise cholesterol levels.

Cousins asserted that PFAS are extremely tenacious and pervasive and that they will never be eradicated from the planet. He said, "We have crossed a planetary boundary," he said, referring to a central paradigm for evaluating Earth's capacity to absorb the impact of human activity. He noticed that the ambient levels of PFAS in the environment have remained constant while in people they have dropped drastically over the previous 20 years.

Cousins advised that we have to learn to accept it and live with it as it is not going anywhere. He said, "What's changed is the guidelines. They've gone down millions of times since the early 2000s because we've learned more about the toxicity of these substances, " AFP reported.

New study reveals drinking rain water is unsafe

A new study, published in Nature Communications, states that life on earth was only possible due to the “rejuvenation” of the planet’s core. The study also says that around 565 million years ago, the magnetic field of earth was down to almost ten percent of its strength right now and the planet was on its way to have the same fate as Mars where life has not been found till now. The magnetic field was bolstered by the phenomenon known as the Cambrian explosion or the “biological big bang”.

“The inner core is tremendously important. Right before the inner core started to grow, the magnetic field was at the point of collapse, but as soon as the inner core started to grow, the field was regenerated,” John Tarduno, corresponding author of the paper, said in a press statement.

The study takes into account rocks near the centre of the earth which were experimented on with the help of carbon dioxide laser and a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. The goal was to find out the changes in the earth’s core over time.

According to the study, the rocks on the outer core of the earth’s surface showed that electric currents generated by the magma present result in the magnetic field gaining strength.

“Because we constrained the inner core’s age more accurately, we could explore the fact that the present-day inner core is actually composed of two parts. Plate tectonic movements on Earth’s surface indirectly affected the inner core, and the history of these movements is imprinted deep within Earth in the inner core’s structure,” added Tarduno, in the press statement.

Climate change is now believed to be the cause of the record-shattering UK heat wave that struck the country last week. Study says that burning of fossil fuels and gas emissions are altering the severity of the extreme heat events.

Gamers rejoice! Because a study has concluded that gaming does not have effect on people's well-being. The study has been carried out by Oxford University. Actual gameplay was tracked rather than just a survey of experience of gamers. Data shared by seven game publishers was used in the study. Gameplay habits of 40,000 gamers were tracked with their consent.

Andy Przybylski, one of the researchers, said that the large scale of the study provided a strong evidence that gaming did not have any effect on wellbeing of gamers.

“With 40,000 observations across six weeks, we really gave increases and decreases in video game play a fair chance to predict emotional states in life satisfaction, and we didn’t find evidence for that – we found evidence that that’s not true in a practically significant way,” said Przybylski who was quoted by The Guardian.

Players were asked whether they were playing for healthy reasons, such as socialising with friends and having fun or negative ones such as feeling of compulsion to satisfy goals in the game. It was found that even those who wanted to play due to negative reasons tended to report an overall satisfaction.

Gaming doesn't have effect on wellbeing, says Oxford University study

A new study had some good news for people with a hereditary risk of cancer as it showed that a number of food items can diminish the danger considerably. The trial, which was conducted on 1000 people with a genetic condition known as Lynch Syndrome, showed that food items like cereals, oats and even green bananas can help him due to the presence of resistant starch.

The study was done over six years and except for cancers in the bowel, most other kinds of cancers were affected by a regular dose of resistant fibers. According to PA Media, the researchers are hopeful that the results will continue for around 10 years even after a person stops taking the fibers in their diets.

The study, which was published in Cancer Prevention Research, was conducted by researchers at the Universities of Newcastle and Leeds. John Mathers, professor of human nutrition at Newcastle University, led the study and he was quite hopeful about the results that it produced.

“We found that resistant starch reduces a range of cancers by over 60%. The effect was most obvious in the upper part of the gut. This is important as cancers of the upper GI tract are difficult to diagnose and often are not caught early on,”, he explained according to the PA Media report.

“Resistant starch can be taken as a powder supplement and is found naturally in peas, beans, oats and other starchy foods. The dose used in the trial is equivalent to eating a daily banana; before they become too ripe and soft, the starch in bananas resists breakdown and reaches the bowel where it can change the type of bacteria that live there,” he said while explaining their findings.

Planning to take that sweet after-lunch nap or a quick power nap before going to the gym? You might want to wait, as a new study published in Hypertension, a journal of the American Heart Association has revealed that people who often take a nap have higher chances of developing blood pressure and having a stroke.

Reportedly, the study used data from over 360,000 participants and reached the conclusion. Blood, urine, and saliva samples in addition to information about the lifestyles of the participants were collected for the study.

Accordingly, individuals who took a frequent nap had a 12 per cent higher chance of developing blood pressure issues while it also increased the risk of stroke by 24 per cent. The study also noted that for individuals younger than 60, napping frequently increased the chance of developing high blood pressure by at least 20 per cent, when compared to non-napping people.

Poor night's sleep means frequent afternoon naps

Explaining the rationale behind the decision, experts remarked that taking more naps was intricately connected to not getting a proper night's sleep.

“Poor sleep at night is associated with poorer health, and naps are not enough to make up for that. This study echoes other findings that generally show that taking more naps seems to reflect an increased risk for problems with heart health and other issues.” said one of the experts.

The study leaned towards the side of sleep behaviour experts who argue that napping is a warning of an underlying sleep disorder in some individuals.

However, it is also pertinent to note that the majority of the people who took part in the study and took frequent naps smoked cigarettes, drank daily, snored, had insomnia and reported being an evening person.

Dogs never cease to surprise us. They seem to read our emotions and be empathetic. Thousands of years with humankind may have made them our best friends, but we have just begun to understand them. A research has now said that dogs may be able to 'see' through their powerful sense of smell.

That dogs sense of smell is much superior to humans is a known fact. Their nose has more than 220 million odour-detecting cels, more than four times than those in humans. This is pretty much known.

But the new research suggests that smell may form much greater part in dog's perception of its surroundings than thought before.

The researchers scanned brains of 23 domestic dogs with the help of a special MRI. They found that connections between regions of the brain that processed smell and vision were especially strong.

"We've never seen this connection between the nose and the occipital lobe, functionally the visual cortex in dogs, in any species," Cornell University neuroimaging researcher Pip Johnson explains. He was quoted by Cornell Chronicle

"It was really consistent. And size-wise, these tracts were really dramatic compared to what is described in the human olfactory system, more like what you'd see in our visual systems."

What this means is that dogs form spatial awareness, a mental picture of surrounding more using their sense of smell like we do using vision.

This perhaps explains why even blind dogs can play a game of fetch.

The research has been published in The Journal of Neuroscience.

Dogs may be 'seeing' through smells, says a study

We all know that greenhouse gases that cause climate change are released while burning coal or gasoline. But did you know that these gases play a positive role too? They actually help our planet remain cool by lifting pollution particles like aerosols that cool the globe by reflecting sunlight and reducing some of the heat. However, now that more and more people have accepted the reality of climate change, and air pollution is decreasing, Earth is in fact getting hotter. The detrimental effects this cleaner is having on the environment and how it will affect us going forward have been highlighted by a recent study.

Science.org reports that during the study, researchers have discovered that the impact of global air pollution on climate has decreased by up to 30 per cent from 2000 levels based on a variety of satellite studies.

Despite the fact that airborne fine particles, or aerosols, are believed to cause deaths of several million people each year, and that their reduction is good news for public health; it is bad news for global warming.

According to Johannes Quaas, a climate scientist at Leipzig University and the study's primary author, cleaner air has actually increased the amount of warming caused by carbon dioxide emissions over the same period of time by somewhere between 15 per cent and 50 per cent.

And, as air pollution continues to be reduced, he predicts, "there will be a lot more of this."

“Air pollution kills people. We need clean air. There is no question about that.” Instead, he believes, efforts to minimise greenhouse gases must be increased.

Therefore, he suggests that the answer may be to turn to aerosols once more, but this time through solar geoengineering.

He claims that in order to prevent catastrophic effects, it will be essential to adopt interim corrective measures, which very certainly include the planned temporary use of aerosols. What a paradox! Improved air quality is now accelerating global warming

The threat of extinction is something that has bothered humans from time immemorial and scientists are continuously conducting research in order to understand the current situation of the planet. However, a new study believes that the threat of global extinction is way worse than previously thought by the experts. The new survey, which was published in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, it involved a survey involving around 3300 scientists.

The participants were asked to focus on the species known to them and the conclusion showed that when it comes to global biodiversity loss, the knowledge gap is still quite huge.

“While considering the types of species and ecosystems they know best, experts estimated that about 30% of species have been globally threatened or driven extinct since the year 1500,” the study’s co-author Forest Isbell of the University of Minnesota in a press release.

“Experts also acknowledged substantial uncertainty around their estimates, with perhaps as few as 16% or as many as 50% of species threatened or driven extinct over this time,” she added.

Co-author Akira Mori of the University of Tokyo in Japan said that the studies conducted in 2019 showed that only 12.5 per cent of species were extinct but the numbers seem to be off.

Mori also explained that “human land-use changes and overexploitation” were the top factors behind loss of land species while “overexploitation and climate change” ruined marine life.

“Because biodiversity is highly regional in nature, our study’s attempt to bring together the perspectives of regional experts from around the world is unprecedented. From the standpoint of social and cultural diversity and inclusiveness, I believe we have presented some suggestions for future international policy discussions, even if they are not necessarily complete,” Mori said according to The Hill.

Threat of global extinction much higher than previously thought, study says

According to a recent report, more than a million meat chickens in the UK pass away every week before they are ready for slaughter. About 64 million chickens in the UK die before their turn to get slaughtered each year, according to a study of official data by the animal protection organisation Open Cages. The dead birds can be burned or processed into products like protein meals that can be used.

Better welfare standards, according to activists for animal rights, might considerably lower the mortality rates. In order to phase out fast-growing breeds and lower stocking density, they are pushing merchants to endorse the Better Chicken Commitment. The modern chicken is genetically developed to grow so swiftly that it can strain its body and increase the danger of cardiac arrest, according to welfare experts.

Fast-growing chickens that reach their kill weight in just 35 days may experience higher rates of mortality, lameness, and muscle disease than slower-growing varieties, according to research. Heart failure or sudden death syndrome is one of the most frequent causes of mortality in flocks.

The Better Chicken Commitment has been endorsed by all of the major retailers in France, although the largest supermarkets in Britain have not yet done so. Up to this point, it has received support from Marks & Spencer, Waitrose, Pret, KFC, and the Compass Group, a provider of culinary services. Sainsbury's stated in April that by March 2023, its fresh chicken would have been bred with 20% greater space than the UK standard.

Researchers at the Milner Centre for Evolution at the University of Bath recently in a study said “selfish chromosomes” are to be blamed for early death of majority of human embryos. Before even a mother realises, she is pregnant, over half of fertilised eggs experience a very early death. The research published in the journal PLoS Biology, explains why fish embryos usually do not have an impact on the treatment of infertility while human embryos don’t survive. And if by chance, those who survive are aborted after few weeks, reported by ANI.

Professor Laurence Hurst, Director of the Milner Centre for Evolution’s looked into why, despite thousands of years of evolution, it’s difficult for human to have a baby. As the embryos contain incorrect number of chromosomes many deaths are caused directly because of this. The fertilised eggs should have 46 chromosomes, 23 each from mother and father.

Professor Hurst said, “Very many embryos have the wrong number of chromosomes, often 45 or 47, and nearly all of these die in the womb. Even in cases like Down syndrome with three copies of chromosome 21, about 80 per cent sadly will not make it to term." The professor explains, “This first step of making eggs is odd. One chromosome of a pair will go to the egg the other will be destroyed. But if a chromosome `knows` it is going to be destroyed it has nothing to lose, so to speak. Remarkable recent molecular evidence has found that when some chromosomes detect that they are about to be destroyed during this first step, they change what they do to prevent being destroyed, potentially causing chromosome loss or gain, and the death of the embryo." If the death of an embryo would benefit the other children of that mother, as the selfish chromosomes will frequently be in the siblings and will get extra nourishment.

The researcher further added that amphibians and fish don’t have this problem. He said, “In over 2000 fish embryos not one was found with chromosomal errors from mum.” Birds likewise have a very low rate- roughly 1/25th of what all mammals experience and the probable reason Hurst pointed is nestling competition that occurs only when they have hatched.

Humans also only have one child at a time and the death of an early embryo allows the mother to quickly begin another pregnancy- having no idea her egg has been fertilised.
