Trump mulling Kharg Island takeover to force Iran to open Strait of Hormuz: Report

A new report warns that global oil prices could surge to $180 per barrel if disruptions in the Gulf persist amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict. The warning comes as supply risks intensify around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil chokepoint. In response, Saudi Arabia is ramping up exports through the Red Sea route, aiming to bypass vulnerable Gulf shipping lanes and stabilise supply.

Report: Saudi Flags $180 Oil if Disruption Extends; Saudi Boosts Exports Via Red Sea Route

Support is building for a potential coalition to secure the Strait of Hormuz, but key US allies are drawing a clear line. Countries like Italy, Germany and France have offered assistance, though military support may only come after a ceasefire is in place. The conditions highlight growing caution among Western nations as the Iran conflict threatens global energy routes.

US-Iran War: Germany, Italy And France Offer Help With Hormuz Only After Ceasefire

The Red Sea cannot fully replace the Strait of Hormuz as a global oil route due to severe capacity limits and security risks, serving only as a temporary partial workaround. While Saudi Arabia's Petroline can divert some exports to the Red Sea, its capacity is roughly 3–7 million barrels/day—far less than the 18–21 million barrels/day that routinely flow through the Strait of Hormuz.

Can Red Sea Replace Strait of Hormuz: Capacity vs Reality

A massive global energy shock is rippling across economies after Iran’s move to shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a route that carries nearly 20% of the world’s oil and LNG supply. With crude prices surging past 100 dollars a barrel, governments are now scrambling to rethink energy security, diversify supplies, and accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels.

Hormuz Crisis Triggers Global Energy Shock

India has escalated its energy security response amid the ongoing West Asia fallout.
In a significant move, the government has now classified energy data as a national security matter, mandating real-time disclosures across the oil and gas chain. This comes even as officials admit the war is impacting supplies, but insist there’s no price hike yet. So what’s really happening on the ground?

India Tightens Grip on Oil, Gas Data

Moody's Analytics warns that the conflict in Iran has increased the risk of a U.S. recession to nearly 50% due to soaring oil prices and a weakening labor market. The surge in energy costs, driven by potential disruptions to oil shipments via the Strait of Hormuz, is expected to trigger a significant drop in consumer spending, making a downturn increasingly difficult to avoid.

Iran War: Moody's Warns of US Recession Risks

In the ongoing Israel–Iran war, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Iran of trying to “blackmail the world” by threatening to shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor. His remarks came as tensions spike, with disruptions to oil and gas infrastructure across the region raising fears of broader economic fallout.

‘Not putting troops in Iran, want Japan to step up,’ says Trump; claims Iran leadership ‘gone’

New Delhi: The Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz have become increasingly dangerous for commercial shipping amid escalating regional tensions, according to a recent advisory from India’s Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR). The centre, which monitors maritime security across the Indian Ocean, described the situation as “volatile”. It highlighted a sharp rise in risks to vessels transiting the key chokepoint, through which around a fifth of the world’s oil passes. “Concurrently, GPS interference and spoofing incidents reported across key nodes such as Fujairah approaches are further degrading navigational reliability and situational awareness,” the advisory stated. Recent analysis by the Indian Maritime Centre shows a significant drop in traceable vessel movements, with more ships engaging in “dark transits”, turning off their Automatic Identification System (AIS), or manipulating signals to obscure their positions. This trend has intensified navigational hazards in already congested waters. The advisory also pointed to emerging dangers from debris. In several cases, vessels suffered minimal damage from falling objects, which experts believe originated from intercepted aerial threats rather than direct strikes. “This underscores a widening hazard envelope, where maritime traffic faces risk not only from direct targeting but also from fallout in active air defence zones,” it noted. The cumulative impact is severely affecting global trade. Confidence among shippers has plummeted, war risk premiums have surged, and supply chains for energy and goods are under strain. The IFC-IOR’s latest update reported 25 incidents in the region, with 21 vessels hit and seven lives lost. One Indian-flagged vessel has been targeted, though Indian authorities have stressed no casualties on Indian-flagged ships so far, with monitoring ongoing for Indian crew on foreign vessels. Shipping companies and ships’ masters have been urged to exercise “heightened caution”, maintain AIS discipline where safe, and follow Best Management Practices (BMP) and IFC-IOR advisories closely. The warnings come against a backdrop of widespread electronic interference, with reports of hundreds of vessels affected by GPS jamming and spoofing in recent days, further complicating safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. The Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) said 22 Indian-flagged vessels, carrying 611 Indian seafarers, are currently present west of Hormuz. More than 488 Indian seafarers have been safely repatriated, with 16 in the past 24 hours.

European nations and Japan condemn Iran for attacks, say ready for ‘efforts’ to ensure safe passage in Hormuz

Washington: In a high-stakes congressional face-off, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Wednesday (Mar 18) faced accusations of sanitising intelligence to protect President Donald Trump’s justification for war with Iran. During a congressional hearing, Gabbard admitted to omitting written testimony that described Iran’s nuclear program as "obliterated," a detail that directly contradicts Trump’s claims of an "imminent" nuclear threat. This comes as the Trump administration reels from the bombshell resignation of counterterrorism chief Joe Kent, who declared Iran posed "no imminent threat". The hearing has raised questions about whether the US was misled into a conflict that has now effectively shut down the vital Strait of Hormuz.
Was Trump Warned About the Strait of Hormuz Shutdown?
At the hearing, Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe were questioned whether intelligence officials had warned Trump that Iran could potentially attack the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most critical maritime oil chokepoint. Since the start of the US-Israel-Iran war, Iran has effectively closed the shipping channel through which over one-fifth of global oil and one-quarter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) pass through daily. In reply, Ratcliffe vaguely said that "The president gets briefings constantly about intelligence". He added that the Pentagon prepared for Iran to hit "US interests in energy sites across the region" and "took measures for force protection".Gabbard meanwhile, confirmed that the threat was flagged. She noted that the intelligence community had a "longstanding assessment" that Iran "would likely hold the Strait of Hormuz". Not our war: Here are countries that rejected Trump’s Hormuz naval support demand

Multiple NATO allies snubbed U.S. President Donald Trump's request for helping secure the Strait of Hormuz. He specifically targeted Japan, South Korea and Germany for not reciprocating even though U.S. hosts thousands of troops in these countries. However, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed that his country won't intervene unless the war ends.

Iran War: Trump Hosts Irish PM; Says Don't Need Help in Strait of Hormuz

The conflict in the West Asia has triggered an unprecedented disruption in global energy flows but Iran continues to export oil. Despite heavy attacks and near-paralysis of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, Tehran has managed to move millions of barrels of crude, largely to China. Washington says that they are allowing Iranian ships across Hormuz to maintain global oik flow. The Strait of Hormuz, which normally carries nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply, has seen tanker traffic collapse dramatically amid escalating conflict and repeated attacks on vessels.

US Says Allowing Iranian Ships Across Hormuz to Maintain Global Oil Supply

U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday (March 15, 2026) that NATO faces a "very bad" future if U.S. allies fail to help open the Strait of Hormuz, the critical oil transport conduit effectively shut by Iran in the West Asia war.

Iran War: NATO Allies Push Back as Trump Seeks Hormuz Support

The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz ever since the war broke out in West Asia has created a ‘stagflation risk’ for the global economy since the start of March, according to a report by Fidelity International. The report highlighted that the situation has now moved beyond mere market fears to actual supply constraints. "The Strait of Hormuz being effectively closed since the start of March means that the mechanism has shifted from headline fear to physical constraint," the report said, underscoring the seriousness of the disruption. The report added that the continuous disruption in the Strait is likely to create a supply-side shock, and make the nations with higher inflation and weaker economic growth globally.
Europe and Asia are likely to face a greater impact
It noted that such a situation will lead to higher headline inflation via higher energy/commodity prices as well as negative growth via real income compression, margin pressure and tighter financial conditions. It further highlighted that the impact would vary across regions, with import-dependent economies expected to suffer more because of unfavourable trade conditions. According to the report, Europe and Asia are also likely to face a greater impact, while the United States may remain relatively less affected, underscoring the risks for regions reliant on energy imports. The report also warned that the economic consequences could continue even after the conflict ends. It noted that the aftermath will not mean a complete return to normal, as oil prices are expected to retain a sustained premium in the near term, keeping pressure on global energy markets. This outlook is consistent with its broader view of growing global fragmentation, which it describes as a medium-term scenario of “strategic fragmentation." On the policy note, the report indicated that governments and central banks also face problems if risks continue. It expects "a swift policy response focused on affordability ahead of the mid-term elections," particularly in major economies. Also read: India stands firm as West Asia conflict fails to dent trade momentum: Piyush Goyal Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. Trump: Negative Response Will Be Bad for NATO's Future as Allies Refuse to Help Despite Threats

The United States is allowing Iranian oil tankers to continue passing through the Strait of Hormuz to maintain global oil supply, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday (March 16) in an interview with CNBC. “The Iranian ships have been getting out already, and we’ve let that happen to supply the rest of the world,” Bessent told CNBC’s Brian Sullivan. Tanker traffic through the key shipping route has dropped sharply as Iran continues to attack commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf. Despite tensions and the presence of the U.S. Navy in the region, Iran has continued to export millions of barrels of oil through the narrow passage. Iran currently exports around 1.5 million barrels per day. According to Bessent, the Trump administration expects tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz to increase before US and allied naval forces begin escorting commercial vessels. He added that tankers delivering oil to India have already moved through the Strait, and US officials believe some Chinese vessels are also leaving the Gulf. “We think that there will be a natural opening that the Iranians are letting out, and for now, we’re fine with that. We want the world to be well supplied,” Bessent said. Also Read: WATCH | Indian LPG tanker Shivalik arrives at Mundra Port after safe transit via Strait of Hormuz Bessent also expressed expectations that oil prices could drop significantly after the conflict ends. “The world will be safer, and we will be better supplied,” he said, adding that prices could fall “much lower” than $80 per barrel once the war is over. However, he noted that he does not know when the conflict will end. 'US allowing Iranian oil tankers through Strait of Hormuz to maintain global supply', says Scott Bessent

However, he noted that he does not know when the conflict will end. Bessent also dismissed speculation that the administration might step into oil futures markets. “We haven’t done that,” the Treasury secretary said. He added that it remains unclear what legal authority the US government would even have to intervene in such trading. https://www.wionews.com/videos/fuel-crisis-indian-lpg-tanker-arrives-after-safe-sail-through-hormuz-1773665081391/embed Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations, and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. There were 24 Indian-flagged vessels in the Persian Gulf, situated to the west of the Strait of Hormuz. Among these, two vessels, the Shivalik and the Nanda Devi, are Indian-flagged vessels, both LPG carriers. They safely transited the Strait of Hormuz late last night/early this morning and are now proceeding towards India. These vessels are carrying approximately 92,700 metric tons of LPG; their ports of arrival will be Mundra and Kandla, with expected arrival dates of March 16 and March 17, respectively. He noted that these discussions are "already yielding some results," suggesting that India finds it more effective to "reason and coordinate" with Tehran rather than disengage. “Certainly, from India's perspective, it is better that we reason and we coordinate and we get a solution than we don't. While this is a welcome development, there is continuing conversation because there is continued work on that,” Jaishankar said.
Watch the video here

The minister cited the passage of Shivalik and Nanda Devi as a practical example of the progress achieved through diplomatic engagement. The representative of Iran's Supreme Leader in India, Abdul Majid Hakeem Ilahi, reiterated Tehran’s position in an interview with news agency ANI. "Of course, of course. Yes," Ilahi said when asked whether Indian ships would be allowed to pass through the Strait. When asked to elaborate further, he added, “I heard that our embassy tried to provide an opportunity for some Indian ships to cross the Strait of Hormuz.” The development comes as India closely monitors maritime routes in the Persian Gulf region to safeguard its energy supplies and shipping interests. Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations, and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. Indian LPG tanker Shivalik arrived at Mundra after safely crossing the Strait of Hormuz, as India engages Iran to ensure energy supply routes remain open

U.S. President Donald Trump claimed Iran has been “essentially defeated” following intense strikes, even as Washington signals a possible diplomatic opening with Tehran. At the same time, the White House is urging several countries to help police the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz to ensure global oil shipments continue safely. The remarks come amid rising regional tensions and ongoing efforts to stabilise the Gulf.

US-Iran War: US President Trump Claims Talks Are Ongoing Despite Iran's Denial

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that North Atlantic Treaty Organization could face a “very bad future” if member nations fail to respond to rising security challenges around the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said countries benefiting from the vital shipping route should step forward and help secure it. The issue also came up during his discussion with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as tensions surrounding the Hormuz passage raise concerns over global energy supplies and regional stability.

The recent suspension of oil-loading operations at the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) Port of Fujairah following a drone attack and subsequent fire has sent ripples through an already volatile global energy market. As tensions escalate in the region and the nearby Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed, Fujairah’s role as an energy lifeline has never been more critical.
Why Fujairah matters globally
Fujairah is not just a regional port, it is a vital cog in the global energy machine. Last year, the port exported an average of more than 1.7 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil and refined fuels - a staggering 1.7 per cent of daily global demand. Also read: Who is making decisions in war-torn Iran after Ali Khamenei's assassination? The port is connected to the Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline (ADCOP), also known as the Habshan–Fujairah Pipeline. This 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd) pipeline enables the UAE to transport crude oil from its interior fields directly to the coast, bypassing the Strait of Hormuz entirely. Also read: ‘Don’t want to lose US backing because of Iran war,’ says Zelensky after Trump rejects his ‘help’ Any significant disruption at the Fujairah terminal limits the UAE's ability to export. As OPEC’s 3rd largest crude producer, the UAE may be forced to further curtail oil production if its only reliable export outlet is compromised.
Why it matters to crude and fuel markets
Beyond exports, Fujairah is one of the world’s most important "energy batteries." With a massive storage capacity of 18 million cubic metres, the port is a premier global hub for storing crude and refined products. It also facilitates complex "blending" operations, where different components are mixed to create specific grades of gasoline and bunker fuels that meet international standards. The facility hosts some of the world's most influential energy companies, including VTTI, Vitol, ADNOC, and Vopak. The temporary suspension of Fujairah’s oil-loading operations, caused by a drone attack, threatens a vital global energy lifeline. As a strategic bypass to the blocked Strait of Hormuz, any disruption here risks forcing production cuts.
